Influence Of Cortisol On The Attachment And Metamorphosis Of Larval Utterbackia Imbecillis On Bluegill Sunfish (Lepomis Macrochirus), Benjamin Dubansky, Brian Whitaker, Fernando Galvez
Faculty Publications
The larvae of unionid freshwater mussels (i.e., glochidia) undergo a parasitic stage requiring their attachment to the external epithelia of fish hosts, where they metamorphose into free-living juveniles. We describe the physiological effects in bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) of infection with glochidia from the paper pondshell (Utterbackia imbecillis). Glochidia accumulation on bluegill increased dramatically at concentrations of 2000 glochidia liter-1 and above, reaching a maximum attachment density of about 30 glochidia g-1 fish at 4000 glochidia liter-1. Plasma cortisol was the most sensitive indicator of biological effect to glochidial exposure, increasing significantly in hosts exposed to 2000 glochidia liter-1 or …

Population Viability Analysis Of Swift Fox (Vulpes Velox) At The Badlands National Park, Indrani Sasmal
Population Viability Analysis Of Swift Fox (Vulpes Velox) At The Badlands National Park, Indrani Sasmal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The swift fox (Vulpes velox) was historically distributed in southwestern South Dakota including the region surrounding Badlands National Park (BNP). The species declined during the mid-1900s due to habitat fragmentation, non-target poisoning, and harvest. A remnant population occurred on USDA Forest Service lands in Fall River County, South Dakota. Following the successful reintroduction of the species in Canada (1983), a reintroduction program was initiated in BNP in the year 2003. Free-ranging swift fox from Colorado and Wyoming were translocated to BNP from 2003 to 2006. Despite these releases and observations of free-ranging swift fox occurring throughout western South Dakota, it …

Outlook For Development Of High-Throughput Cryopreservation For Small-Bodied Biomedical Model Fishes, Terrence R. Tiersch, Huiping Yang, E. Hu

With the development of genomic research technologies, comparative genome studies among vertebrate species are becoming commonplace for human biomedical research. Fish offer unlimited versatility for biomedical research. Extensive studies are done using these fish models, yielding tens of thousands of specific strains and lines, and the number is increasing every day. Thus, high-throughput sperm cryopreservation is urgently needed to preserve these genetic resources. Although high-throughput processing has been widely applied for sperm cryopreservation in livestock for decades, application in biomedical model fishes is still in the concept-development stage because of the limited sample volumes and the biological characteristics of fish …

Flow cytometry (FCM) and computer-assisted sperm motion analysis (CASA) methods were developed and validated for use with endangered razorback suckers Xyrauchen texanus collected (nZ64) during the 2006 spawning season. Sperm motility could be activated within osmolality ranges noted during milt collections (here 167-343 mOsm/kg). We hypothesized that sperm quality of milt collected into isoosmotic (302 mOsm/kg) or hyperosmotic (500 mOsm/kg) Hanks' balanced salt solution would not differ. Pre-freeze viabilities were similar between osmolalities (79%G6 (S.E.M.) and 76%G7); however, post-thaw values were greater in hyperosmotic buffer (27%G3 and 12%G2; PZ0.0065), as was mitochondrial membrane potential (33%G4 and 13%G2; PZ0.0048). Visual estimates …

Smoking Behavior And Alcohol Consumption In Individuals With Panic Attacks, Amanda R. Mathew, Peter J. Norton, Michael J. Zvolensky, Julia D. Buckner, Jasper A.J. Smits
Faculty Publications
Individuals with anxiety often report greater smoking and drinking behaviors relative to those without a history of anxiety. In particular, smoking and alcohol use have been directly implicated among individuals experiencing panic attacks, diagnosed with panic disorder, or high on panic-relevant risk factors such as anxiety sensitivity. Less is known, however, about specific features of panic that may differentiate among those who do or do not use cigarettes or alcohol. The purpose of the current study was to replicate previous research findings of an association between panic symptomatology, cigarette smoking, and alcohol consumption, as well as extend findings by examining …
Habitat Use Does Not Reflect Habitat Quality For Henslow's Sparrows (Ammodramus Henslowii) Wintering In Fire-Managed Longleaf Pine Savannas, Erik I. Johnson, Jennifer K. Dimiceli, Philip C. Stouffer, Matthew E. Brooks
Habitat Use Does Not Reflect Habitat Quality For Henslow's Sparrows (Ammodramus Henslowii) Wintering In Fire-Managed Longleaf Pine Savannas, Erik I. Johnson, Jennifer K. Dimiceli, Philip C. Stouffer, Matthew E. Brooks

Interpreting habitat quality requires an understanding of the consequences of habitat use because bird density alone may not reflect habitat quality. Although habitat use can be readily quantified, subsequent effects remain elusive for most species, especially for migrants on the wintering grounds. Wintering Henslow's Sparrow (Ammodramus henslowii) densities in Longleaf Pine (Pinus palustris) savannas are fire-dependent, with highest bird densities in the first winter after a fire, but reduced density in subsequent winters without fire. We determined habitat characteristics associated with variation in bird density in the first and second winters following fire and then followed birds' diet, condition, and …

The phylogeny of spiderhunters (Nectariniidae: Arachnothera) was reconstructed by comparing mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences of all currently recognized species and with broad geographic sampling of two particularly variable species complexes, the Little Spiderhunter (Arachnothera longirostra) and the streaky spiderhunters (A. modesta and A. affinis). It appears to be a relatively old group, whose diversification was not caused by recent sea-level changes. However, the modern, highly sympatric distribution of the large species in the Sunda lowlands was probably a result of dispersal via recent land bridges. Within the highly variable A. longirostra group, there are substantially diverged taxa in the …

Abstract The raft behavior of the invasive red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), has been documented for over a century. However, no rigorous tests have been performed elucidating the structure, limits, and important characteristics of this behavior. Rafting makes S. invicta competitive in both native and foreign environments. Further understanding of this behavior will provide critical advancement to the comprehension of this ant's global invasion ecology. Though speculations exist, no one has looked at the movements of individuals within the raft formation, the longevity of rafts, raft success rate, or the importance of different life stages and …

Initiatives In Context: Agricultural Productivity, Water, And The Paradox Of Ethiopia, Annie M. Cafer
Nebraska Anthropologist
This paper will look at Ethiopian policies and their effect, in most cases negative, on water issues, irrigation, and agricultural productivity in the country. Additionally, this paper will address how water issues, irrigation, and agricultural productivity affect the health of Ethiopians and the resulting food and seed aid required to help many individuals and communities survive. This paper is designed to illuminate the paradoxes Ethiopian officials, local communities, and development agencies work to solve. Many initiatives will be discussed, some in detail others more generally, and the details that render them successfitl or failures will be addressed
Male-Male Competition, Synchronous Estrus, And Reproductive Skew In Multimale-Multifemale Primate Groups, Michelle Night Pipe
Male-Male Competition, Synchronous Estrus, And Reproductive Skew In Multimale-Multifemale Primate Groups, Michelle Night Pipe
Nebraska Anthropologist
In recent years, paternity assessments utilizing DNA testing of primate populations have yielded valuable iriformation regarding reproductive skew, male-male competition and synchronous estrus. In this paper, genetic data and demographic factors of multimale multifemale primate groups including West African chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus), bonobos (Pan paniscus), savannah baboons (Papio cynocephalus), mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei), and mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx) are examined and compared The revealed patterns of paternity in multi-male groups are shown to support the priority-ol-access model. The role of malemale competition in attracting females to the group is considered, as is the function of synchronous estrus in constraining …
A Reexamination Of The Nature Of Male Parental Investment, Nathan R. Sell
A Reexamination Of The Nature Of Male Parental Investment, Nathan R. Sell
Nebraska Anthropologist
The role of male parental investment has recently been the subject of much research and debate in anthropology. By understanding the role of male parental care, its evolutionary development, function to the individual, and implications to the larger society, anthropologists can make better sense of observed cultural phenomena. This paper reviews the anthropological literature published on the different facets of male parental investment, and provide an overview of major trends in the research. The role of mating and parenting effort, cross-species comparisons of male parental care, and possible hormonal causations for male parental care are addressed As a proxy for …
General Strain Theory, Race, And Delinquency, Jennifer Peck
General Strain Theory, Race, And Delinquency, Jennifer Peck
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The present study drew on Agnew's General Strain Theory (GST) to examine the relationship between strain, race, and delinquent behavior. To address this possible association, five hypotheses were tested to examine if different types of strain and stress exposure influence delinquent coping and if these relationships are conditioned by race and ethnicity. Using data from the Add Health Study, White, African American, and Hispanic adolescents, the present study attempts to generalize GST to different racial and ethnic groups.
Results from OLS and negative binomial regression analyses indicate that some support was found for GST, in that indicators of strain to …

Movement Patterns, Survival, And Sightability Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) In Eastern South Dakota, Kevin A. Robling
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Limited information is available on white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) movements, survival, density, and resource selection in the Prairie Pothole Region of South Dakota where semi-permanent wetland densities are relatively high. Primary objectives of this study were to develop a sightability model for aerial surveying and document seasonal movement patterns and survival rates for white-tailed deer in this region. Secondary objectives were to calculate seasonal home ranges, daily and seasonal movements relative to management unit boundaries, determine cause specific mortality, and evaluate summer and winter resource use and selection. From February 2009 – February 2010, 43 adult female white-tailed deer along …

The Energy-Water Nexus In Texas, Amy Hardberger, Ashlynn Stillwell, Carey King, Michael Webber, Ian Duncan
Faculty Articles
As we confront the challenges posed by climate change, decisions on supplying energy and water to the world’s growing population should no longer be made in isolation. The challenges facing Texas and the rest of the globe require that we recognize the deep inter‐connections and trade‐offs involved in deciding how to meet power and water needs in an increasingly resource‐constrained world.
This report is the first in a series designed to explore aspects of the energy‐water nexus in Texas. It examines the water requirements for various types of electricity generating facilities, both for typical systems nationwide and here in Texas. …
