The Influence Of Hiv Stigma And Disclosure On Psychosocial Behavior, James Minson Jan 2011

The Influence Of Hiv Stigma And Disclosure On Psychosocial Behavior, James Minson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) remains a serious public health issue, and many social factors are involved in virus transmission and treatment. The current conceptualization of how HIV status disclosure and perceived stigma of HIV diagnosis interact is undeveloped. This study was based on social cognitive theory and tested hypothesized positive relations between HIV serostatus disclosure, social support, and self-efficacy. In addition, self-rated HIV stigma was examined as a potential mediating variable. Participants were 109 HIV positive, mostly White gay men recruited via an online bulletin board. They completed the medical outcomes study social support survey, the general self-efficacy scale, the …

An Analysis Of The Capacity Of Coastal Management Practitioners To Develop Coastal Ecosystem‐Based Management Plans, Tiffany Catherine Smythe Jan 2011

An Analysis Of The Capacity Of Coastal Management Practitioners To Develop Coastal Ecosystem‐Based Management Plans, Tiffany Catherine Smythe

Open Access Dissertations

Ecosystem‐based management (EBM) is an integrated, collaborative resource management strategy that is widely touted as the preferred approach to coastal and environmental management. Yet coastal management decisions largely occur through a fragmented system of governance, whereby coastal management practitioners act somewhat autonomously to make land‐ and water‐use decisions that can have tremendous impacts on entire ecosystems. There are relatively few examples of coastal ecosystem‐based management in practice; one possible reason is that a truly EBM approach, considering both the social and ecological aspects of an ecosystem, places extreme demands on coastal management practitioners. To effectively develop coastal EBM plans, practitioners …

New Macrocyclic Glycopeptide Antibiotic For Chiral Hplc Stationary Phases And Ionic Liquids In Analytical Chemistry, Xiaotong Zhang Jan 2011

New Macrocyclic Glycopeptide Antibiotic For Chiral Hplc Stationary Phases And Ionic Liquids In Analytical Chemistry, Xiaotong Zhang

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

The main focus of this dissertation is on the development of new chiral stationary phases for HPLC and GC and the application of ionic liquids in analytical chemistry. They will be discussed separately in two parts. Enantiomeric separations continue to be of great interest to the pharmaceutical industry. It is because drug molecules of opposite chirality often possess distinctive effects in biological environments. Direct chromatography is one of the major techniques used to address the challenge of enantiomeric analysis. Macrocyclic glycopeptides are a very useful class of chiral selectors for HPLC stationary phases because of their broad enantioselectivity. A study …

Slowing Dna Translocation In A Biological Protein Α-Hemolysin Ion Channel, R. Samanthi S. De Zoysa

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

During the past decade, nanopore DNA sequencing has emerged as a revolutionary prospect towards a "$1000 genome" goal set by U.S. National Institute of Health. In the nanopore approach, electrophoretic movement of polynucleotide molecules through a nanopore would provide transient current blockades that are unique to each molecule. Since kilobase length DNA can be read directly without amplification or use of costly reagents such as enzymes and fluorescent tags, the nanopore approach can significantly reduce the sequencing cost. However, due to the rapid DNA translocation velocity through the nanopore, accurate detection of single nucleotide bases via the electrophoretically driven approach …

Addressing Prey Selection And Predator Fitness: Ingestion By, And Growth Of Ochromonas Danica On Multiple Bacterial Prey, Briony L. Foster Jan 2011

Addressing Prey Selection And Predator Fitness: Ingestion By, And Growth Of Ochromonas Danica On Multiple Bacterial Prey, Briony L. Foster

Biology Theses - Archive

Nanoflagellates provide an important link in aquatic food webs by consuming bacterial biomass and subsequently providing nutrients to higher trophic levels by becoming prey themselves and regenerating nutrients consumed in excess of metabolic needs. Nanoflagellate predation has typically been addressed by examining one or two aspects of a seemingly complex prey identification process, and rarely has the subsequent fitness of the predator been quantified. In this work we examine how bacterial prey size, growth state, growth rate, nutritional composition, and phylogenetic class effect ingestion rate by, and growth rate of, the mixotrophic flagellate Ochromonas danica. A phylogenetically diverse group of …

Molecular Systematics Of The Coffee Snakes, Genus Ninia (Colubridae: Dipsadinae), Matthew John Ingrasci Jan 2011

Molecular Systematics Of The Coffee Snakes, Genus Ninia (Colubridae: Dipsadinae), Matthew John Ingrasci

Biology Theses - Archive

Although previous studies have addressed issues relating to the systematics and taxonomy in the snake genus Ninia, the evolutionary history of the group remains largely unknown. Preliminary morphological studies have been unable to resolve many of the relationships within the genus and have not thoroughly tested the relationship between Ninia and other dipsadine snakes. To address these gaps in our knowledge of Ninia, I used molecular techniques to infer phylogenetic relationships. I obtained tissue samples for all species of Ninia and sequenced two mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and one nuclear DNA (nucDNA) locus. In total, this dataset included 2453 base pairs …

A Nerche Annual Report: Profiles Of Public Engagement: Findings From The Ernest A. Lynton Award For The Scholarship Of Engagement For Early Career Faculty, John Saltmarsh, Elaine C. Ward, Patti H. Clayton

New England Resource Center for Higher Education Publications

Community-campus engagement has evolved significantly over the past quarter century, shaped by a number of factors. One has been the effort to reclaim the civic mission of American higher education. Frank Newman, while at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in the early 1980s, asserted that "the most critical demand is to restore to higher education its original purpose of preparing graduates for a life of involved and committed citizenship,” and concluded that “the advancement of civic learning, therefore, must become higher education's most central goal" (1985, xiv). Another factor has been the increased understanding that colleges and …

Natural Resource “Conflicts” In The U.S. Southwest, William Snape Jan 2011

Natural Resource “Conflicts” In The U.S. Southwest, William Snape

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

INTRODUCTION: Environmental laws and the ecosystems they support are under attack. Intermittently since the Reagan administration and increasingly since the 2008 economic collapse, certain politicians and their industry sponsors have inundated the media with angry rhetoric, blaming historic job losses on "overregulation."' Environmental laws are a frequent target of these politicians who often benefit from contributions supplied by the fossil fuel and mining industries. Ignoring the successes of these laws- cleaner air, cleaner water, and recovering imperiled wild species and habitat-they claim that environmental regulations are "job killers." Reflecting the success of these claims, the recent House Fiscal Year 2012 …

A Framework For Monitoring Local And Regional Food Systems, Heather Victoria Davis Jan 2011

A Framework For Monitoring Local And Regional Food Systems, Heather Victoria Davis

Capstone Collection

The US food system has been experiencing gradual, yet significant, changes in recent years - with many people recognizing that conventional approaches are not only unsustainable, but also detrimental. As an alternative paradigm, the development of local food systems has been flourishing because of the benefits they bring to us: more local control over our food; supporting the local economy and entrepreneurs; healthier food options; fewer “food miles” and the related benefits of lowered use of petroleum; stronger community bonds; job creation for our rural communities; more gentle on the environment; and a more secure food system overall. Monitoring the …

In the United States, the top 20% of the population owns 85% of the wealth. This leaves only 15% of the wealth for the rest of the population. This clear disparity of wealth, in combination with the common practice of racial segregation (created by 300 years of inequality) has direct correlations to violence in United States cities. Boston is one of these cities. Impoverished minority neighborhoods are struggling because they exist in a society that is essentially ignoring them. There are fewer opportunities in poor minority neighborhoods, particularly for young people. As a result, a cycle of violence has continued …

The Campaign For Bias-Free Policing In Vermont: One State’S Resistance To The Localization Of Federal Immigration Agency, Amanda L. Park

Capstone Collection

There are roughly 1,500 immigrants from Mexico and Central America currently working on farms in Vermont, helping to sustain approximately half of all milk produced in the state. But the lack of adequate visa-to-work options leaves these individuals without proper documentation to be in the US. As such, they are vulnerable to exploitation by their employers, susceptible to harassment from the communities in which they live, and under constant threat of deportation by federal immigration agents. Now, the US Department of Homeland Security—in charge of domestic defense and immigration—is attempting to use local and state law enforcement officers in the …

Soil Management Implications Of Producing Biofuel Feedstock, Jane M. F. Johnson, David W. Archer, Douglas L. Karlen, Sharon L. Weyers, Wally W. Wilhelm Jan 2011

Soil Management Implications Of Producing Biofuel Feedstock, Jane M. F. Johnson, David W. Archer, Douglas L. Karlen, Sharon L. Weyers, Wally W. Wilhelm

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The use of plant biomass for energy has existed since humans mastered the use of fire, although utilization beyond the open fire has evolved. The concept of using recent biomass as a major energy feedstock is being revisited, driven by high consumer demand (growing population), declining domestic oil supplies, increasing cost of fossil fuels, and a desire to curb the emission of greenhouse gases (Johnson et al., 2007b). In general terms, agriculture and forestry are the economic sectors commercially producing a wide array of bioenergy feedstocks (e.g., grains, herbaceous annuals, herbaceous perennials, and woody perennials). For this review, biomass feedstock …
