Base Excision Repair, Folate Deficiency And Cancer, Archana Unnikrishnan
Base Excision Repair, Folate Deficiency And Cancer, Archana Unnikrishnan
Wayne State University Dissertations
Folate, an essential water soluble vitamin has been implicated in the etiology of many types of cancer especially colorectal cancer. Folate deficiency has been reported to incapacitate DNA repair pathways and thereby affect the genomic stability. Our lab has reported previously and here again through this research that folate deficiency affects the DNA damage inducibility of base excision repair pathway. Our study shows the differential effect folate deficiency has on the expression of the genes involved in this pathway. Further, our study shows the increase in preneoplastic lesions in the colon of mice exposed to folate deficiency in response to …

Examination Of Dispositions And Practices In Diversity: The Impact Of A Teacher Education Course Promoting Culturally And Responsive Pedagogy, Deuslene Leite Bastos
Wayne State University Dissertations
Assimilation ideology guiding teachers and policy makers to mainstream immigrant children into the American schools has prevailed in spite of pluralists' efforts for reform schools to provide more opportunities for culturally and linguistically diverse students. Research shows a need to change assimilation driven policies and practices which are harmful to students into a reconstructivist ideology that has shown to be more conducive for the application of culturally responsive teaching. Teacher education courses aimed to prepare teacher candidates for diverse classrooms have shown limitations due to abundant focus on theory or lack of elements in course work that are known to …

Synthesis, Redox Properties, And Langmuir Monolayer Formation Of Selected 3d- And 4d- Metalloamphiphiles, Sree Ramadevi Shanmugam
Wayne State University Dissertations
Transition metals containing amphiphilic compounds integrate various geometric, electronic, magnetic, and electrochemical properties together with the film forming properties. These compounds thereby find potential towards the fabrication of responsive films. This dissertation confers the synthesis and analysis of film forming properties of various redox-active metalloamphiphiles. Two new azido and thiocyanto bridged copper-based amphiphiles were synthesized and characterized by IR, UV-visible, and EPR spectroscopies, mass spectrometry, cyclic voltammetry, and elemental analysis. The redox studies show that both these complexes exhibit redox reversibility with only the azido bridged complex showing good redox cycling of about 50 times with minimal decomposition of less …

Mathematics Faculty Publications
We investigate global dynamics of the following systems of difference equations
[Mathematical equations cannot be displayed here, refer to PDF]
where the parameters α 1, β 1, A 1, γ 2, A 2, B 2 are positive numbers, and the initial conditions x 0 and y 0 are arbitrary nonnegative numbers. We show that this system has rich dynamics which depends on the region of parametric space. We show that the basins of attractions of different locally asymptotically stable equilibrium points or non-hyperbolic equilibrium points are separated by the global stable manifolds of either saddle …

Autonomy And Care In Medicine, Hille Haker
Autonomy And Care In Medicine, Hille Haker
Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This paper argues that the core principle of bioethics, autonomy, is rooted both in the 20th century history of the development of new medical technologies as in political liberalism transferred to medical practices, rendering the medical decision-making of patients a centerpiece of medical interventions. The paper shows how the ambiguity in the interpretation of autonomy reflects the ambivalence of bioethics towards making normative claims on the moral agents insofar as these go beyond the respect for a patient’s autonomy. In the second part, the paper analyzes the alternative approach of care ethics, which intends to emphasize both the vulnerability and …

Moral Analysis Of A Procedure At Phoenix Hospital, M. Therese Lysaught
Moral Analysis Of A Procedure At Phoenix Hospital, M. Therese Lysaught
Institute of Pastoral Studies: Faculty Publications and Other Works
A Catholic hospital in Phoenix “acted in accord with the Ethical and Religious Directives, Catholic moral tradition and universally valid moral precepts” in carrying out a controversial procedure on an ill pregnant woman that resulted in the death of the unborn child, theologian M. Therese Lysaught said in a moral analysis of the situation. Phoenix Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted determined that the November 2009 procedure constituted a direct abortion, and he subsequently stripped St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center of its Catholic status. (See Origins, Vol. 40, No. 31, for more documentation on the case.) In discussions leading up to …

Pay Attention! Can The Type Of Interaction Between Handler And Dog Preceding An Agility Run Affect A Dog’S Attention During A Run?, Jillian Faustino
Pay Attention! Can The Type Of Interaction Between Handler And Dog Preceding An Agility Run Affect A Dog’S Attention During A Run?, Jillian Faustino
Undergraduate Review
There has been an increase of interest in investigating human-dog interactions in recent years. One area of interest for dog owners and animal behaviorists is how interactions and play between humans and dogs affect performance on object choice and detour tasks (Rooney & Bradshaw, 2002, Rooney & Bradshaw, 2003, Schwab & Huber, 2006, Pongracz, Miklosi, Timar-Geng, & Csanyi, 2004, Call, Brauer, Kaminski & Tomasell, 2003). Previous research has suggested that play (a pleasurable game or activity which involves both humans and dogs, such as tug-of-war or fetch) is a very important part in a dog’s social, cognitive and motor development …

Psychotherapeutic Techniques And Play Therapy With Children Who Experienced Trauma: A Review Of The Literature, Julia Lamotte
Undergraduate Review
This research examined the use of Play Therapy with children who have experienced emotional, physical or psychological trauma. Past research supports other therapeutic modalities as being effective with children after a traumatic experience, though the validity of play therapy lacks comprehensive quantitative and qualitative support. Based on the concept that play is the natural language of children, this form of treatment is developmentally appropriate, specifically with children under the age of twelve. For the purposes of this research, trauma was categorized in to Type 1 (single occurrences) and Type 2 (recurring trauma). A review of the literature found that although …

In 2009, Mycobacterium bovis infection was detected in a herd of 60 elk (Cervus elaphus) and 50 fallow deer (Dama dama) in Nebraska, USA. Upon depopulation of the herd, the prevalence of bovine tuberculosis (TB) was estimated at ∼71–75%, based upon histopathology and culture results. Particularly with elk, gross lesions were often severe and extensive. One year ago, the majority of the elk had been tested for TB by single cervical test (SCT), and all were negative. After initial detection of a tuberculous elk in this herd, 42 of the 59 elk were tested by SCT. …

United States Department of Energy: Publications
We demonstrate use of restricted access media with reversed phase functionality (RAM-RP) for analysis of low molecular weight proteins and peptides in mouse serum (75ml) using a custom designed modular automated processing system (MAPS). RAM-RP fractionation with simultaneous removal of high molecular weight and high abundance proteins is integrated with a follow-on buffer exchange module (BE) to ensure compatibility with subsequent processing steps (trypsin digestion and intact peptide separation prior to mass spectrometric analysis). The high sample capacity afforded by chromatographic methods generates enough sample to achieve comprehensive serum peptidome identification (357 proteins) through tandem mass spectrometric analysis of both …

Reducing Error And Measurement Time In Impedance Spectroscopy Using Model Based Optimal Experimental Design, Francesco Ciucci, Thomas Carraro, William Chueh, Wei Lai
United States Department of Energy: Publications
In this work we introduce several novel tools for the reduction of errors in parameters estimated with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy experiments. An optimization strategy is developed that minimizes an estimate of the errors on the parameters while bounding the experimental time. The approach is also used to reduce experimental time while keeping a bound on the parameter errors. This feature is particularly critical in systems changing significantly within the experimental time. The paper uses a fuel cell electrode model to test this methodology and presents a real time algorithm for coupling experiment with the parameter estimation and experimental optimization.

Reduction of UVI to UIV as the result of direct or indirect microbial activity is currently being explored for in situ remediation of subsurface U plumes, under the assumption that UIV solubility is controlled by the low solubility mineral uraninite (UIV-dioxide). However, recent characterizations of U in sediments from biostimulated field sites, as well as laboratory UVI bioreduction studies, report on the formation of UIV species that lack the U=O2=U coordination of uraninite, suggesting that phases other than uraninite may be controlling UIV solubility in environments with complexing surfaces and ligands. …

UndAHRCR-6 was identified from the metal-reducing bacterium Shewanella sp. strain HRCR-6. Both in vivo and in vitro characterization results indicate that UndAHRCR-6 is an outer membrane endecaheme c-type cytochrome and probably has a key functional role in the extracellular reduction of iron [Fe(III)] oxides and uranium [U(VI)] by Shewanella sp. HRCR-6.

Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 possesses a periplasmic [NiFe]-hydrogenase (MR-1 [NiFe]-H2ase) that has been implicated in H2 production and oxidation as well as technetium [Tc(VII)] reduction. To characterize the roles of MR-1 [NiFe]-H2ase in these proposed reactions, the genes encoding both subunits of MR-1 [NiFe]-H2ase were cloned and then expressed in an MR-1 mutant without hyaB and hydA genes. Expression of recombinant MR-1 [NiFe]-H2ase in trans restored the mutant’s ability to produce H2 at 37% of that for the wild type. Following purification, MR-1 [NiFe]-H2ase coupled H2 oxidation to …

To evaluate the stability of biogenic nanoparticulate U(IV) in the presence of an Fe(II)-rich iron-bearing phyllosilicate, we examined the reduction of structural Fe(III) in chlorite CCa-2 and uranium(VI) by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, and the reoxidation of these minerals (after pasteurization) via the introduction of oxygen. Bioreduction experiments were conducted with combinations of chlorite, U(VI), and anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS). Abiotic experiments were conducted to quantify the reduction of U(VI) by chemically-reduced chlorite-associated Fe(II), the oxidation of nanoparticulate U(IV) by unaltered structural Fe(III) in chlorite, and the sorption of U(VI) to chlorite, to elucidate interactions between U(VI)/ U(IV) and Fe(II)/Fe(III)-chlorite. Solids were characterized …
