Diffusion Of Tin From Tec-8 Conductive Glass Into Mesoporous Titanium Dioxide In Dye Sensitized Solar Cells, Julienne Cabell, Robert J. Lesuer Jan 2011

Diffusion Of Tin From Tec-8 Conductive Glass Into Mesoporous Titanium Dioxide In Dye Sensitized Solar Cells, Julienne Cabell, Robert J. Lesuer

Mathematics Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

The photoanode of a dye sensitized solar cell is typically a mesoporous titanium dioxide thin film adhered to a conductive glass plate. In the case of TEC-8 glass, an approximately 500 nm film of tin oxide provides the conductivity of this substrate. During the calcining step of photoanode fabrication, tin diffuses into the titanium dioxide layer. Scanning Electron Microscopy and Electron Dispersion Microscopy are used to analyze quantitatively the diffusion of tin through the photoanode. At temperatures (400 to 600 °C) and times (30 to 90 min) typically employed in the calcinations of titanium dioxide layers for dye sensitized solar …

Neurons In The Human Hippocampus And Amygdala Respond To Both Low- And High-Level Image Properties, Peter N. Steinmetz, Elaine Cabrales, Michael S. Wilson, Christopher P. Baker, Christopher K. Thorp, Kris A Smith, David M. Treiman Jan 2011

Neurons In The Human Hippocampus And Amygdala Respond To Both Low- And High-Level Image Properties, Peter N. Steinmetz, Elaine Cabrales, Michael S. Wilson, Christopher P. Baker, Christopher K. Thorp, Kris A Smith, David M. Treiman

Neurology

A large number of studies have demonstrated that structures within the medial temporal lobe, such as the hippocampus, are intimately involved in declarative memory for objects and people. Although these items are abstractions of the visual scene, specific visual details can change the speed and accuracy of their recall. By recording from 415 neurons in the hippocampus and amygdala of human epilepsy patients as they viewed images drawn from 10 image categories, we showed that the firing rates of 8% of these neurons encode image illuminance and contrast, low-level properties not directly pertinent to task performance, whereas in 7% of …

My Teacher Sux! [Censored]: Protecting Students' Right To Free Speech On The Internet, 28 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 385 (2011), Katherine Hokenson

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

This comment will discusses the problem posed by student speech made on the Internet, how free speech issues are generally addressed by courts, the Supreme Court cases that have specifically addressed the First Amendment rights of students, and factors that courts dealing with student speech made on the Internet have attempted to use in their decisions. The comment will further look at how courts have analyzed online student speech cases in light of available Supreme Court precedent, and will propose that the Court adopt a hybrid of the Tinker test when addressing student speech made on the Internet, which will …

Modern Materialism Through The Lens Of Indo-Tibetan Buddhism, Alan Pope Jan 2011

Modern Materialism Through The Lens Of Indo-Tibetan Buddhism, Alan Pope

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

The suffering that gives rise to and is perpetuated by contemporary culture’s addiction to

materialistic consumption is described surprisingly well by the ancient tradition of Indo-

Tibetan Buddhism. From this perspective, modern human beings exemplify hungry ghosts

trapped in a state of incessant greed and insatiability, which at its core reflects a desperate

attempt to maintain a sense of self that is out of accord with basic reality. The rich Tibetan

Buddhist understanding of the unfolding process by which the hungry ghost negotiates its

project, including its attempts to avoid greater suffering and to seek bliss, serves to elucidate

our …

A Damp Squib: Environmental Law From A Human Evolutionary Perspective, Benjamin J. Richardson Jan 2011

A Damp Squib: Environmental Law From A Human Evolutionary Perspective, Benjamin J. Richardson

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

Humans have become the Earth’s dominant animals, yet we remain perched on the precipice of an anthropogenic collapse in planetary ecological systems. For lawyers, this raises a question: why hasn’t environmental law succeeded? The law’s limitations in this area cannot satisfactorily be explained merely due to poorly designed institutions, lack of political will, or economic disincentives, among prevalent explanations in the literature. Rather, its flaws should also be understood in terms of human psychology, as derived from the interaction of complex biological and cultural evolutionary processes. While some legal scholars have drawn insights from behavioural economics or social psychology, few …

I'M Still Your Baby: Canada's Continuing Support Of U.S. Linkage Regulations For Pharmaceuticals, Ron A. Bouchard Jan 2011

I'M Still Your Baby: Canada's Continuing Support Of U.S. Linkage Regulations For Pharmaceuticals, Ron A. Bouchard

Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review

Canada's linkage regime for pharmaceuticals, modeled after the originating U.S. Hatch-Waxman regime, was brought in under intense political pressure to balance effective patent enforcement over new and innovative drugs with the timely market entry of lower-priced generic competitors. It has been almost two decades since the regulations were enacted, and to date, there has been little objective assessment as to whether the regulations have, in fact, stimulated innovation and timely generic entry. We recently completed three empirical studies on the linkage between drug approval and drug patenting under the Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) Regulations (NOC Regulations). Of particular interest …

Emerging Scholars Series: A Sui Generis Regime For Traditional Knowledge: The Cultural Divide In Intellectual Property Law, J. Janewa Oseitutu Jan 2011

Emerging Scholars Series: A Sui Generis Regime For Traditional Knowledge: The Cultural Divide In Intellectual Property Law, J. Janewa Oseitutu

Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review

Traditional knowledge can be protected, to some extent, under various intellectual property laws. However, for the most part, there is no effective international legal protection for this subject matter. This has led to proposals for a sui generis regime to protect traditional knowledge. The precise contours of the right are yet to be determined, but a sui generis right could include perpetual protection. It could also result in protection for historical communal works and for knowledge that may be useful but that is not inventive according to the standards of intellectual property law. Developing countries have been more supportive of …

Differentiation Of Embryonic Stem Cells Into Fibroblast-Like Cells In Three-Dimensional Type I Collagen Gel Cultures, Shinsaku Togo, Tadashi Sato, Hisatoshi Sugiura, Xingqi Wang, Hesham Basma, Amy J. Nelson, Xiangde Liu, Tom W. Bargar, J. Graham Sharp, Stephen I. Rennard Jan 2011

Differentiation Of Embryonic Stem Cells Into Fibroblast-Like Cells In Three-Dimensional Type I Collagen Gel Cultures, Shinsaku Togo, Tadashi Sato, Hisatoshi Sugiura, Xingqi Wang, Hesham Basma, Amy J. Nelson, Xiangde Liu, Tom W. Bargar, J. Graham Sharp, Stephen I. Rennard

Journal Articles: Pulmonary & Critical Care Med

Fibroblasts are heterogeneous mesenchymal cells that play important roles in the production and maintenance of extracellular matrix. Although their heterogeneity is recognized, progenitor progeny relationships among fibroblasts and the factors that control fibroblast differentiation are poorly defined. The current study was designed to develop a reliable method that would permit in vitro differentiation of fibroblast-like cells from human and murine embryonic stem cells (ESCs). Undifferentiated ESCs were differentiated into embryoid bodies (EBs) with differentiation media. EBs were then cast into type I collagen gels and cultured for 21 d with basal media. The spindle-shaped cells that subsequently grew from the …

Taking A Deep Breadth: The Rhetorical Construction Of Solidarity In The American Labor Movement, William O'Shannon Murphy Jan 2011

Taking A Deep Breadth: The Rhetorical Construction Of Solidarity In The American Labor Movement, William O'Shannon Murphy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the rhetorical fragments in three case studies of the American Labor Movement constituting movement members in solidarity. Using Kenneth Burke's discussion of rhetorical substance, this project explores the possibilities for developing deep and broad forms of solidarity within the American Labor Movement. Rhetorical fragments of the Industrial Workers of the World, the United Farm Workers, and contingent faculty unionization efforts are explored.

I argue Burke's ideas of substance and identification provide a powerful lens through which we can examine the solidary practices of social movements. Through the examination of the case studies mentioned, I demonstrate that solidarity …

Who's Doing The Dirty Work? Development And Preliminary Validation Of A Measure Of Housework, Jocelyn Nicole Petrella Jan 2011

Who's Doing The Dirty Work? Development And Preliminary Validation Of A Measure Of Housework, Jocelyn Nicole Petrella

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study developed a new instrument for measuring couples' attitudes and behaviors regarding housework. This study was conducted in two phases. The first phase focused on developing reliable subscales that would reflect various dimensions of housework. Phase one consisted of 199 individual participants in committed relationships who were working at least 20 hours per week and shared a single home address with their partner. Participants answered questions related to housework through an online survey. An exploratory factors analysis (EFA) revealed eight dominant factors from the housework questionnaire, labeled as: 1) Fairness, 2) Value of Housework, 3) Gender Role Attitudes, …

Acting Virtuous: Chastity, Theatricality, And The Tragedie Of Mariam, Kent Lehnhof Jan 2011

Acting Virtuous: Chastity, Theatricality, And The Tragedie Of Mariam, Kent Lehnhof

English Faculty Books and Book Chapters

Given the interrelation of female chastity and female theatricality in early modem discourses, it comes as no surprise that both figure importantly in what is believed to be the first original English drama to be written by a woman. As Elizabeth Cary explores a Jewish queen 's sexual purity in The Tragedie of Mariam, she does so by concentrating on questions of performance. Cary's title character explicitly abjures theatricality even as she embraces chastity, creating a fissure in Renaissance discourses on women that threatens to swallow up the antifeminist idea that female chastity is always an act.
