Dissolved Organic Matter Composition And Photoreactivity In Prairie Lakes Of The U.S. Great Plains, Christopher L. Osburn, Courtney R. Wigdahl, Sherilyn C. Fritz, Jasmine E. Saros

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) of 27 prairie saline lake ecosystems was investigated in the Northern and Central Great Plains of the United States using absorbance, fluorescence, lignin concentration, and stable C isotope values. The majority of variation in DOM fluorescence among lakes was due to humic (peak C) and microbially formed (peak M) fluorescent components, which appear to be derived from autochthonous primary production. Strong correlations between peak M and nutrients allow us to model total phosphorus (TP) concentration using peak M fluorescence and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) absorption. The rate of primary production (PP) was positively correlated with …

Synergy In Biorational Insecticides Applied To Collard Greens , Brassica Oleracea , Infested With Diamondback Moths, Plutella Xylostella (Lepidopedra : Yponomeutidae), Matthew Conklin Flanery

Theses

The pest status of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella, has risen as it has become resistant to most insecticides used for its control. Insecticide mixtures could be exploited to slow down resistance development in the diamondback moth. We evaluated various mixtures comprising: Agroneem Plus® , spinosad, thiamethoxam and jalapeño pepper extract using laboratory bioassays with a view to obtaining a combination that could be adopted by small growers. These mixtures were applied to collard greens using the leaf dip method and fed to second to fourth instar larvae in bioassays. The mixtures were evaluated for their effect on larval fitness …

Obstructing Authenticity: The Church And Sexuality In Randall Kenan’S A Visitation Of Spirits And Jeanette Winterson’S Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, Kyesha L. Jennings

Theses

The dominant beliefs of a society determine what it finds acceptable and socially constructed theories generally valorize only heterosexism. Thus, global society has viewed homosexuality as a repudiation of the norm—an aberration, a disease, or a “lifestyle”—all of which carry negative social connotations. While this particularly characterizes churches within the African American community, identical issues occur within other denominations of Christianity. This study will explore literary texts that display how the Christian church, more specifically the Baptist and Pentecostal denominations, obstruct homosexuals’ identity by implementing a limited, rigid morality that rejects all who do not fit within its code, a …

In Vitro Galax Urceolata Seed Propagation Under Different Treatments, Rachel C. Jackson Jan 2011

In Vitro Galax Urceolata Seed Propagation Under Different Treatments, Rachel C. Jackson

Theses

Galax urceolata which is native from Virginia to Georgia is becoming threatened due to overharvesting. Expediting the multiplication of Galax would increase its potential in becoming an economically viable cash crop while protecting the wild population. The overall goal of this study was to develop a protocol for in vitro Galax germination and proliferation. Influences of light intensity, culture medium pH, temperature stratification, and seed maturity as were studied for their effects on Galax seed germination in vitro. Plant growth regulators (PGRs) BA, IBA, and GA3 were tested for their effects on germination. BA and IBA were also tested for …

We have used a novel microwave-assisted method developed in our laboratories to synthesize a series of ruthenium-thiosemicarbazone complexes. The new thiosemicarbazone ligands are derived from benzo[d][1,3]dioxole-5-carbaldehyde (piperonal) and the complexes are formulated as [(diimine)2Ru(TSC)](PF6)2 (where the TSC is the bidentate thiosemicarbazone ligand). The diimine in the complexes is either 2,2′-bipyridine or 1,10-phenanthroline. The complexes have been characterized by spectroscopic means (NMR, IR and UV–Vis) as well as by elemental analysis. We have studied the biophysical characteristics of the complexes by investigating their anti-oxidant ability as well as their ability to disrupt the function …

The potential for smallpox to be disseminated in a bioterror attack has prompted development of new, safer smallpox vaccination strategies. We designed and evaluated immunogenicity and efficacy of a T-cell epitope vaccine based on conserved and antigenic vaccinia/variola sequences, identified using bioinformatics and immunological methods. Vaccination in HLA transgenic mice using a DNA-prime/peptide-boost strategy elicited significant T cell responses to multiple epitopes. No antibody response pre-challenge was observed, neither against whole vaccinia antigens nor vaccine epitope peptides. Remarkably, 100% of vaccinated mice survived lethal vaccinia challenge, demonstrating that protective immunity to vaccinia does not require B cell priming.

Click Chemistry Inspired One-Pot Synthesis Of 1,4-Disubstituted 1,2,3-Triazoles And Their Src Kinase Inhibitory Activity, Dalip Kumar, V. Buchi Reddy, Anil Kumar, Deendayal Mandal, Rakesh Tiwari, Keykavous Parang

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Two classes of 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazoles were synthesized using one-pot reaction of α-tosyloxy ketones/α-halo ketones, sodium azide, and terminal alkynes in the presence of aq PEG (1:1, v/v) using the click chemistry approach and evaluated for Src kinase inhibitory activity. Structure–activity relationship analysis demonstrated that insertion of C6H5– and 4-CH3C6H4– at position 4 for both classes and less bulkier aromatic group at position 1 in class 1 contribute critically to the modest Src inhibition activity (IC50 = 32–43 μM) of 1,4-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazoles.

She Blinded Me With Science: Wrongful Convictions And The "Reverse Csi-Effect", Mark A. Godsey, Marie Alou

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

Prosecutors in the United States are often heard to complain these days of the "CSI-effect."' When they make this complaint, they mean that the popularity of television shows like CSI has made it unduly difficult for them to obtain convictions of guilty defendants. Jurors today have become spoiled as a result of the proliferation of these "high-tech" forensic shows, and now unrealistically expect conclusive scientific proof of guilt before they will convict. The unfortunate result is that guilty defendants are acquitted because of a lack of forensic evidence in cases where, in reality, no such forensic evidence was possible or …

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Publications

Spag16 is the murine orthologue of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii PF20, a protein known to be essential to the structure and function of the “9+2” axoneme. In Chlamydomonas, the PF20gene encodes a single protein present in the central pair of the axoneme. Loss of PF20 prevents central pair assembly/integrity and results in flagellar paralysis. Here we demonstrate that the murine Spag16 gene encodes two proteins: 71 kDa SPAG16L, which is found in all murine cells with motile cilia or flagella, and 35 kDa SPAG16S, representing the C terminus of SPAG16L, which is expressed only in male germ cells, and is …

Anatomy and Neurobiology Publications

Background

Most retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) convey contrast and motion information to visual brain centers. Approximately 2% of RGCs are intrinsically photosensitive (ipRGCs), express melanopsin and are necessary for light to modulate specific physiological processes in mice. The ipRGCs directly target the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) to photoentrain circadian rhythms, and the olivary pretectal nucleus (OPN) to mediate the pupillary light response. How and when this ipRGC circuitry develops is unknown.

Results

Here, we show that some ipRGCs follow a delayed developmental time course relative to other image-forming RGCs. Specifically, ipRGC neurogenesis extends beyond that of other RGCs, and ipRGCs begin …

Enriching For Correct Prediction Of Biological Processes Using A Combination Of Diverse Classifiers, Daijin Ko, Brad Windle

Medicinal Chemistry Publications

Background Machine learning models (classifiers) for classifying genes to biological processes each have their own unique characteristics in what genes can be classified and to what biological processes. No single learning model is qualitatively superior to any other model and overall precision for each model tends to be low. The classification results for each classifier can be complementary and synergistic suggesting the benefit of a combination of algorithms, but often the prediction probability outputs of various learning models are neither comparable nor compatible for combining. A means to compare outputs regardless of the model and data used and combine the …

Gore's Science The Kairos Of An Inconvenient Truth And The Implications For Science Writing, Carolyn M. Glasshoff Jan 2011

Gore's Science The Kairos Of An Inconvenient Truth And The Implications For Science Writing, Carolyn M. Glasshoff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Modern Americans are exposed to scientific and technical information on a daily basis that urges them to react as well as learn about new ideas. The popular science writing that circulates this information must be portrayed in a way that makes it easy for lay people to understand complicated ideas while at the same time remaining complex enough to convince readers that the information is reliable, accurate, and worth learning. In making decisions about how to accomplish this balancing act, science writers make decisions that influence the audience's opinion about new scientific ideas, how easily the audience will accept or …

Orientational Imaging In Polar Polymers By Piezoresponse Force Microscopy, Pankaj Sharma, Dong Wu, Shashi Poddar, Timothy J. Reece, Stephen Ducharme, Alexei Gruverman

Stephen Ducharme Publications

We report orientational imaging of the polarization distribution in nanostructured ferroelectric copolymer of polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (PVDF-TrFE) and collagen fibrils using vertical and lateral modes of piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). In PVDF-TrFE, detection of azimuthal variations in the lateral PFM signal is attributed to the alignment of the molecular chains along different directions. Local switching in PVDF-TrFE is shown to proceed via 120° or 180° rotation of dipoles around the molecular chain, depending upon the strength of the applied electric field. Analysis of the vertical and lateral PFM signals in collagen reveals polar anisotropy of the electromechanical properties along the axes …

Metal-Free Intermolecular Oxidative C–N Bond Formation Via Tandem C–H And N–H Bond Functionalization, Abhishek A. Kantak, Shathaverdhan Potavathri, Rose A. Barham, Kaitlyn M. Romano, Brenton Deboef Jan 2011

Metal-Free Intermolecular Oxidative C–N Bond Formation Via Tandem C–H And N–H Bond Functionalization, Abhishek A. Kantak, Shathaverdhan Potavathri, Rose A. Barham, Kaitlyn M. Romano, Brenton Deboef

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The development of a novel intermolecular oxidative amination reaction, a synthetic transformation that involves the simultaneous functionalization of both a N–H and C–H bond, is described. The process, which is mediated by an I(III) oxidant and contains no metal catalysts, provides a rapid and green method for synthesizing protected anilines from simple arenes and phthalimide. Mechanistic investigations indicate that the reaction proceeds via nucleophilic attack of the phthalimide on an aromatic radical cation, as opposed to the electrophilic aromatic amination that has been reported for other I(III) amination reactions. The application of this new reaction to the synthesis of a …

"Sit Back Down Where You Belong, In The Corner Of My Bar With Your High Heels On": The Use Of Cross-Dressing In Order To Achieve Female Agency In Shakespeare's Transvestite Comedies, Heather Lynn Wright

MA in English Theses

In taking on their male disguises, Viola (Twelfth Night ), Rosalind (As You Like It ), and Portia (The Merchant of Venice ) are able to transcend the confines of their social roles and achieve agency and voice as both females and males. With their male disguises, they gain power and agency as lower-class males and as aristocratic females. This power correlates to the fact that they are not fully male. Their female attributes, ideas, and nature (the essence of their femininity) still come through. They are limited and marginalized as women not because of their intelligence …

Performing The Self: Character Agency And Impression Management Within The Narrative Of Survivor: Samoa, Carolyn Davis Hedges Jan 2011

Performing The Self: Character Agency And Impression Management Within The Narrative Of Survivor: Samoa, Carolyn Davis Hedges

Mass Communications - Dissertations

This study used an in-depth textual analysis of the television show Survivor: Samoa to demonstrate that the unscripted characters of the program and shows like it have agency within the narrative. In addition to the 19th season of the Survivor series, the sample also included Jeff Probst's (host and executive producer of the series) weekly blog for EntertainmentWeekly.com. Unlike most popular television narratives, the unscripted characters of Survivor: Samoa have the opportunity to tell their own story. This doctoral project was an in-depth analysis at how that authorial power was shared between the Producers of the show and the individual …

Of His Bones Are Coral Made: Submerged Cultural Resources, Site Formation Processes, And Multiple Scales Of Interpretation In Coastal Ghana, Rachel Lynelle Horlings

Anthropology - Dissertations

Integrating theoretical and methodological approaches to formation processes across a range of scales from micro-artifact to region and from historical to environmental processes, this work explores the archaeology of the event related to submerged archaeological sites within the Elmina seascape of coastal Ghana. Building on and intersecting with the work of other scholars, this research is a unique approach to the investigation of submerged cultural remains related to historical maritime trade. Remote sensing surveys in 2009 led to the identification of three sites related to maritime trade, adding significantly to the two previously known sites, which include a circa 1650 …

Intimate Allies: Identity, Community, And Everyday Activism Among Cisgender People With Trans-Identified Partners, Avery Brooks Tompkins

Sociology - Dissertations

This dissertation blends traditional ethnographic data from interviews and observations with digital ethnographic data from blogs and YouTube videos to present stories of identity, community, and activist-oriented experiences from white cisgender women who are partnered with trans-identified people on the FTM spectrum. The project addresses the following broad questions: How does being the cisgender partner of a trans person inform complexities around the ability to articulate sexual identity? How are cisgender partners finding community and organizing themselves into new forms of community when they often lack language with which to describe their relationships? In what ways are cisgender people allies …

Treatment As A Common Good: Adopting Hiv/Aids Policy In Russia And South Africa, 1999-2008, Vladislav Kravtsov

Political Science - Dissertations

The goal of this dissertation is to increase our understanding of domestic policy responses to initiatives and expertise as provided by international health organizations. Although following international recommendations often improves domestic public health, in certain circumstances resistance to adopting them persists. My core theoretical argument suggests that a strong societal agreement about what constitutes the "common good" served by state (e.g., "social purpose") informs how domestic policy-makers evaluate the benefits of adopting international recommendations. This agreement also affects how governments frame the provision of treatment, decide which subpopulations should benefit from the consumption of public good, and choose their partners …
