Surface Modification, Fabrication, And Characterization Of Silicon, Polymer, And Nanotube Composite Materials, Lei Pei Mar 2011

Surface Modification, Fabrication, And Characterization Of Silicon, Polymer, And Nanotube Composite Materials, Lei Pei

Theses and Dissertations

In my research, I have performed many characterization and fabrication experiments that are based on tools of analytical chemistry, materials chemistry, and surface science. My research projects are as follows. (1) Fabrication of transparent polymer templates for nanostructured amorphous silicon photovoltaics was done using low-cost nanoimprint lithography of polydimethylsiloxane. This approach provides a test bed for absorption studies in nanostructured film geometries and should result in improved light capturing designs in thin-film solar cells. Nanopatterned polymer films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and optical measurements. (2) A straightforward method for fabricating freely suspended, thin, carbon nanotube (CNT) membranes infiltrated …

Relations Among Media, Eating Pathology And Body Dissatisfaction In College Women, Carrie Bair Mar 2011

Relations Among Media, Eating Pathology And Body Dissatisfaction In College Women, Carrie Bair

Theses and Dissertations

Research has identified a relation between exposure to thin-ideal magazine and television media images and eating disorder pathology. However, few studies have examined the potential influence of Internet media on eating disorder behaviors and attitudes. This study investigated the associations among appearance-orientated media exposure, body dissatisfaction, eating pathology and thin-ideal internalization in a sample of 421 female undergraduate students. Results indicate that undergraduate women spend significantly more time viewing appearance-oriented sources online, rather than reading appearance-orientated magazines. Appearance-oriented Internet consumption was also more strongly associated with eating disorder pathology than was use of other media (television and magazines). Relations between …

Screening For Otologic Functional Impairments In The Elderly: Whose Job Is It Anyway?, B.E. Weinstein Mar 2011

Screening For Otologic Functional Impairments In The Elderly: Whose Job Is It Anyway?, B.E. Weinstein

Publications and Research

Among the most prevalent of chronic conditions affecting older adults globally, hearing loss prevalence is increasing and its impact on society growing. Untreated hearing loss diminishes ones ability to communicate and its strong association with depression and cognitive decline adds further to the burden of hearing loss. Hearing health care is rarely included in the traditional medical exam for older adults, it is typically not considered a risk factor for cognitive decline or falls, and it is not a condition for which routine screening has been recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. Yet in older adults, disability typically …

The Burden Of Reproduction In Lizards: Changes In Respiratory Physiology Associated With Reduced Lung Volume At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (2007-2008), Casey Gilman, Blair Wolf Mar 2011

The Burden Of Reproduction In Lizards: Changes In Respiratory Physiology Associated With Reduced Lung Volume At The Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge (2007-2008), Casey Gilman, Blair Wolf

Sevilleta LTER Program Data

Previous morphological work on lizards suggests that the volume of growing eggs may result in a significant decrease in lung volume during gravidity. Iguanid lizard lungs are located within continuous thoracic and abdominal cavities and are highly distensible. Because of their distensible nature and lack of a diaphragm, both naturally occurring and introduced structures within the abdominal and thoracic cavities (i.e. organs, food, eggs) compress them and potentially reduce available lung volume for gas exchange. During reproduction, this decrease comes at a time of increased energetic demands, due to the cost of provisioning eggs and the physical burden of transporting …

Quantitative Interpretation Of A Genetic Model Of Carcinogenesis Using Computer Simulations, Donghai Dai, Brandon Beck, Xiaofang Wang, Cory Howk, Yi Li

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

The genetic model of tumorigenesis by Vogelstein et al. (V theory) and the molecular definition of cancer hallmarks by Hanahan and Weinberg (W theory) represent two of the most comprehensive and systemic understandings of cancer. Here, we develop a mathematical model that quantitatively interprets these seminal cancer theories, starting from a set of equations describing the short life cycle of an individual cell in uterine epithelium during tissue regeneration. The process of malignant transformation of an individual cell is followed and the tissue (or tumor) is described as a composite of individual cells in order to quantitatively account for intra-tumor …

Noise Cancellation In Fourier Transform Spectrophotometry, David W. Larsen, Zhi Xu

UMSL Patents

Increasing signal to noise ratio in optical spectra obtained by spectrophotometers. An interferometer introduces interference effects into a source light beam. A dual beam configuration splits the source beam having the interference effects into a reference beam and a sample beam. The reference beam interacts with a reference substance and is detected by a reference detector. The sample beam interacts with a sample substance and is detected by a sample detector. An optical spectra of the sample is based on the difference between the detected reference beam and the detected sample beam.

Traversing Swanton Road, 4th Ed., James A. West

Academic, Government & Associated Organizational Research Resources

Situated at the northwest end of Santa Cruz County and occupying circa 30 square miles of sharply contrasted terrain, the Scott Creek Watershed concentrates within its geomorphological boundaries, at least 10-12% of California's flora, both native and introduced. Paradoxically, the use/abuse that the watershed has sustained over the past 140+ years, has not necessarily diminished the biodiversity and perhaps parallels the naturally disruptive but biologically energizing processes (fire, flooding, landslides and erosion), which have also been historically documented for the area for +60 years. This is an early edition of an extensive document by James A. West. Please visit the …

Two Rotary Motors In F-Atp Synthase Are Elastically Coupled By A Flexible Rotor And A Stiff Stator Stalk., André Wächter, Yumin Bi, Stanley D Dunn, Brian D Cain, Hendrik Sielaff, Frank Wintermann, Siegfried Engelbrecht, Wolfgang Junge Mar 2011

Two Rotary Motors In F-Atp Synthase Are Elastically Coupled By A Flexible Rotor And A Stiff Stator Stalk., André Wächter, Yumin Bi, Stanley D Dunn, Brian D Cain, Hendrik Sielaff, Frank Wintermann, Siegfried Engelbrecht, Wolfgang Junge

Biochemistry Publications

ATP is synthesized by ATP synthase (F(O)F(1)-ATPase). Its rotary electromotor (F(O)) translocates protons (in some organisms sodium cations) and generates torque to drive the rotary chemical generator (F(1)). Elastic power transmission between F(O) and F(1) is essential for smoothing the cooperation of these stepping motors, thereby increasing their kinetic efficiency. A particularly compliant elastic domain is located on the central rotor (c(10-15)/ε/γ), right between the two sites of torque generation and consumption. The hinge on the active lever on subunit β adds further compliance. It is under contention whether or not the peripheral stalk (and the "stator" as a whole) …

A Role For Amyloid In Cell Aggregation And Biofilm Formation, Melissa C. Garcia, Janis T. Lee, Caleen B. Ramsook, David Alsteens, Yves F. Dufrêne, Peter N. Lipke

Publications and Research

Cell adhesion molecules in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida albicans contain amyloid-forming sequences that are highly conserved. We have now used site-specific mutagenesis and specific peptide perturbants to explore amyloid-dependent activity in the Candida albicans adhesin Als5p. A V326N substitution in the amyloid-forming region conserved secondary structure and ligand binding, but abrogated formation of amyloid fibrils in soluble Als5p and reduced cell surface thioflavin T fluorescence. When displayed on the cell surface, Als5p with this substitution prevented formation of adhesion nanodomains and formation of large cellular aggregates and model biofilms. In addition, amyloid nanodomains were regulated by exogenous peptides. An amyloid-forming …

Electrically Deflected Nanomechanical Sensors, Ming Su

UCF Patents

An electrically-induced deflective amplification sensor as an actively controlled and reconfigureable nanomechanical sensor for the detection and recognition of cehmicals, biomolecules, and gaseous molecules. The electrically-induced deflective amplification sensors use electric fields to control the bending of transducers, have adjustable sensitivites that depend on electric field strength, and reconfigureable operation ranges for the detection of target molecules at ultra-low and ultra-high concentrations. The sensors are highly integrated, sensitive, provide real-time detection ability, and do not require labels. The electrically-induced deflective amplification transducers can be reconfigured to identify molecules in spectroscopy. A new type of electrophoresis is established using nanostructured transducers. …

Chloroquine Treatment Of Arpe-19 Cells Leads To Lysosome Dilation And Intracellular Lipid Accumulation: Possible Implications Of Lysosomal Dysfunction In Macular Degeneration, Patrick M. Chen, Zoë J. Gombart, Jeff W. Chen Mar 2011

Chloroquine Treatment Of Arpe-19 Cells Leads To Lysosome Dilation And Intracellular Lipid Accumulation: Possible Implications Of Lysosomal Dysfunction In Macular Degeneration, Patrick M. Chen, Zoë J. Gombart, Jeff W. Chen

Dartmouth Scholarship

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in elderly people over 60. The pathogenesis is still unclear. It has been suggested that lysosomal stress may lead to drusen formation, a biomarker of AMD. In this study, ARPE-19 cells were treated with chloroquine to inhibit lysosomal function. Chloroquine-treated ARPE-19 cells demonstrate a marked increase in vacuolation and dense intracellular debris. These are identified as chloroquine-dilated lysosomes and lipid bodies with LAMP-2 and LipidTOX co-localization, respectively. Dilation is an indicator of lysosomal dysfunction. Chloroquine disrupts uptake of exogenously applied rhodamine-labeled dextran by these cells. This suggests a disruption …

Background

Extensive DNA rearrangement of genic colinearity, as revealed by comparison of orthologous genomic regions, has been shown to be a general concept describing evolutionary dynamics of plant genomes. However, the nature, timing, lineages and adaptation of local genomic rearrangement in closely related species (e.g., within a genus) and haplotype variation of genomic rearrangement within populations have not been well documented.

Results

We previously identified a hotspot for genic rearrangement and transposon accumulation in theOrp region of Asian rice (Oryza sativa, AA) by comparison with its orthologous region in sorghum. Here, we report the comparative …
