Examining Predictors Of Optimism In Adolescence: Internal And External Factors, E Chrissy Bulloch
Examining Predictors Of Optimism In Adolescence: Internal And External Factors, E Chrissy Bulloch
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the relationship between parenting, adolescent personality, and adolescent optimism. Four hundred and eighty families with at least one adolescent child in the Seattle, Washington area completed a series of questionnaires assessing parenting style, personality, and optimism. Results from hierarchical regression analyses indicated that there is a small, yet significant, portion of the variance in optimism explained by parenting and personality individually, but that the relationship between optimism, parenting, and personality dynamics is far more complex than originally anticipated. Further research is needed to examine the nature of these relationships and to provide a more comprehensive understanding of …

De Novo Genome Assembly And Snp Marker Development Of Pyrenophora Semeniperda, Marcus Makina Soliai
Theses and Dissertations
Pyrenophora semeniperda (anamorph Drechslera campulata) is a necrotrophic fungal seed pathogen of a variety of grass genra and species, including Bromus tectorum, an exotic grass that has invaded many natural ecosystems of the U.S. Intermountain West. As a natural seed pathogen of B. tectorum, P. semeniperda has potential as a biocontrol agent due to its effectiveness at killing dormant B. tectorum seeds; however, few genetic resources exist for this fungus. Here, the genome assembly of a P. semeniperda isolate using 454 GS-FLX genomic and paired-end pyrosequencing techniques is presented. The total assembly is 32.5 Mb and contains …

Introduction. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is widely recognized as a serious public health problem and heavy financial burden. Currently, there is no treatment that can delay or stop the progressive brain damage in AD. Recently, we demonstrated that stem cell factor (SCF) in combination with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) (SCF+G-CSF) has therapeutic effects on chronic stroke. The purpose of the present study is to determine whether SCF+G-CSF can reduce the burden of β-amyloid deposits in a mouse model of AD. Methods. APP/PS1 transgenic mice were used as the model of AD. To track bone marrow-derived cells in the brain, the bone …

Expression And Purification Of A Redox-Sensitive Green Fluorescent Protein Fused With Anthrax Toxin Lethal Factor, Ernesto Licon^, Jianjun Sun*
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011
Pathogenicity of Anthracis Bacillus is induced by its exotoxin composed of protective antigen (PA) lethal factor (LF) and edema factor (EF) that together target mammalian cells. As previous studies have suggested, it is important to study the structure of the targeted receptor (ANTXR2) as there has been evidence showing that the disruption of the disulfide bonds present in the receptor ectodomain inhibits the PA-mediated LF translocation across the membranes of mammalian cells, suggesting that cellular redox potential plays an important role in the anthrax toxin action. Here, we have constructed a fusion-gene containing the N-terminal Lethal Factor and a redox-sensitive …

Preliminary Assessment Of Pharmaceuticals And Personal Care Products (Ppcps) In Natural Waters In The El Paso Del Norte Area And Their Impacts On Aquatic Invertebrates, Sarah T. Baca^, Wen-Yee Lee, Jennifer Martinez, Rodolfo Guerrero, Elizabeth J. Walsh*
COURI Symposium Abstracts, Spring 2011
The Rio Grande is a major source of water for humans and wildlife. The types and concentrations
of PPCPs, and their impacts on aquatic life, in the river are virtually unknown. The purpose of this
research is to assess their impact on aquatic invertebrates and establish the concentrations of these contaminants in the river and an adjacent wetland. Water and sediment samples were collected from the river and the wetland. Water chemistry parameters were monitored and samples were retained for PPCP analyses. Invertebrates were exposed to PPCPs using modified life cycle tests. LC50 values for caffeine for chironomids ranged from …

Development Of Single-Chip Silicon Photonic Microcantilever Arrays For Sensing Applications, Weisheng Hu
Development Of Single-Chip Silicon Photonic Microcantilever Arrays For Sensing Applications, Weisheng Hu
Theses and Dissertations
Microcantilever arrays have been shown to be promising label-free nanomechanical sensing devices with high sensitivity. Two factors that affect the usefulness of microcantilevers in sensing scenarios are the sensitivity of the transduction method for measuring changes in microcantilever properties and the ability to create large compact arrays of microcantilevers. In this dissertation, we demonstrate that microcantilevers with an in-plane photonic transduction method are attractive because they maintain the sensitivity of the traditional laser beam reflection method while being scalable to simultaneous readout of large microcantilever arrays. First I demonstrate the integration of a compact waveguide splitter network with in-plane photonic …

Comparative genomic analyses of primates offer considerable potential to define and understand the processes that mold, shape, and transform the human genome. However, primate taxonomy is both complex and controversial, with marginal unifying consensus of the evolutionary hierarchy of extant primate species. Here we provide new genomic sequence (~8 Mb) from 186 primates representing 61 (~90%) of the described genera, and we include outgroup species from Dermoptera, Scandentia, and Lagomorpha. The resultant phylogeny is exceptionally robust and illuminates events in primate evolution from ancient to recent, clarifying numerous taxonomic controversies and providing new data on human evolution. Ongoing speciation, reticulate …

Background: Over the last two decades, various measures of entropy have been used to examine the complexity of human postural control. In general, entropy measures provide information regarding the health, stability and adaptability of the postural system that is not captured when using more traditional analytical techniques. The purpose of this study was to examine how noise, sampling frequency and time series length influence various measures of entropy when applied to human center of pressure (CoP) data, as well as in synthetic signals with known properties. Such a comparison is necessary to interpret data between and within studies that use …
Association Between Academic Performance And Electrocortical Processing Of Cognitive Stimuli In College Students, Mary Menn Wolf
Association Between Academic Performance And Electrocortical Processing Of Cognitive Stimuli In College Students, Mary Menn Wolf
Theses and Dissertations
Because event-related potentials (ERPs) can reflect individual differences in intellectual ability, individual differences in college grade-point average (GPA) may be associated with specific individual ERP waves, such as the P300. However, P300 amplitude is higher in women than in men and varies across the menstrual cycle, factors that could confound the association between GPA and ERPs. In this regard, our objective was to determine whether differences in GPA are reflected in ERPs while standardling for sex and menstrual phase. After participants provided informed consent, we obtained GPAs from 22 right-handed college students (11 male, age range 22 to 26 and …

Characteristics Of Problems For Problem-Based Learning: The Students’ Perspective, Nachamma Sockalingam, Henk G. Schmidt
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
This study aimed to identify salient problem characteristics perceived by students in problem-based curricula. To this end, reflective essays from biomedical students (N = 34) on characteristics of good problems were text analyzed. Students identified eleven characteristics, of which they found the extent to which the problem leads to desired learning outcomes as the most important characteristic. The extent to which the problem stimulates elaboration and the extent to which the problem promotes team effort were considered to be the least important problem characteristics. We clustered the eleven characteristics into two categories, “features” or “functions,” based on the perceived roles …

Human rhinovirus (HRV) is one of the most common human respiratory pathogens and is responsible for the majority of upper respiratory illnesses. Recently, a phylogeny was constructed from all known Ameri- can Type Culture Collection (ATCC) HRV sequences. From this study, three HRV classifications (HRVA, HRVB, and HRVC) were determined and techniques for classifying new isolates of HRV were reported. The genetic change of this virus in specific populations over time is of great interest to understand the evolution and epidemiology of viruses. To facilitate the collections of HRV sequences over a number of years, a virology experiment was designed …

The Anchor, Volume 124.19: March 16, 2011, Hope College
The Anchor: 2011
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
