Jean-Martin Charcot - Neurologist By Avocation, Nephrologist By Yearning, Gary Eknoyan
Jean-Martin Charcot - Neurologist By Avocation, Nephrologist By Yearning, Gary Eknoyan
Houston History of Medicine Lectures (2006-2012)
In an age of medical advances and specialization, Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893) helped found the discipline of neurology and in 1882 was appointed the first professor of Diseases of the Nervous System in France. As an investigator with broad interests and vast knowledge Charcot contributed to several other disciplines. An early mentor and dominant figure in Charcot's formative years was Pierre Rayer (1793-1867), famous for his seminal contributions to the study of the kidney, who gifted Charcot with his passion for clinical pathological correlations and likely a yearning for the study of kidney diseases. Famous for the clarity and incisiveness of …

Participants completed a researcher developed survey instrument that measured both the importance and frequency of the caring, interaction, and active teaching strategies. The survey instrument measured six demographic factors and 30 statements regarding caring, interaction, and active teaching. Live Cultures: Illness, Mortality, And Masculinity In Contemporary Spanish Film, Bobby D Allbritton
Live Cultures: Illness, Mortality, And Masculinity In Contemporary Spanish Film, Bobby D Allbritton
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Live Cultures" explores the ways that democratic Spain has been understood, written, and filmed as an ill kingdom, and how illness as bodily effect is an ontology that affects our understanding of our discrete selves. To consider illness a dark geography, as Sontag wrote in Illness as Metaphor, begs a continual re-interpretation of the relation of self, body and nation, an understanding of healthy or ill citizenship as it is inscribe into the body. This politicized inscription does not function alone but in tandem with gender, considering the ways that illness in its most base function operates some effect on …

An Examination Of The Influence Of Socioeconomic Status And Race On End-Of-Life Treatment Level Following A Palliative Intervention, Kathleen Benton
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine differences in treatment level at the end of life according to race and socioeconomic status and the extent a palliative intervention may change the course and cost of care. The study population included patients from the Medical Center of Central Georgia (N=2,920). The data were examined as a secondary analysis retrospectively. Data from the medical record and a unique clinical database were coded into descriptive, predictor, and outcome variables to define the population, and the patient's treatment status before and after the intervention. McNemar's test of symmetry, Chi Square, and Logistic Regression …

Problem-Based Learning Curriculum: Problems And Possible Solutions, Robert M. K. W. Lee
Journal of Medical Education
The use of problem-based learning (PBL) approach in education by medical schools around the world is still evolving based on local environmental factors, such as the willingness and ability of the teachers to adjust to this style of learning, and government regulations. In this article, I will present my personal views on the problems and challenges teachers/tutors may face in different components of a PBL medical education, and suggest some solutions or approaches PBL teachers may wish to consider in confronting or solving these problems. I will focus on lectures, tutorial process, teaching of clinical skills, and evaluation. In the …

Educating Medical Students To Appreciate The Value Of Life: Implementing Practices For Teaching Empathy At The Medicaluniversity Level, Yu-Hua Liu, Wing P. Chan
Journal of Medical Education
Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess our teaching the value and meaning of life to our freshman medical students before they received their medical education, using a two stage approach known as ”Life Gardener.” Methods: We prospectively recruited 165 Year-1 medical students. In the first stage (”Sapling Care Operations”), which started at the beginning of the semester, students looked after a small flowering houseplant commonly known as the ”African violet” for sixteen weeks. The purpose of the care process was to inspire students to observe the life and death struggle and to contemplate factors affecting quality of …
