Mglur5 Involvement In Methamphetamine Reward And The Co-Morbidity Of Schizophrenia And Stimulant Use Disorders, Amy Anne Herrold Jan 2011

Mglur5 Involvement In Methamphetamine Reward And The Co-Morbidity Of Schizophrenia And Stimulant Use Disorders, Amy Anne Herrold

Dissertations (2 year embargo)

Methamphetamine (Meth) is a potent, widely-used stimulant. Stimulant abuse occurs more frequently in the schizophrenia patient population than the general population. The co-morbidity of stimulant use disorders and schizophrenia presents an understudied phenomenon and suggests overlapping brain states of these two pathologies.

There are currently no FDA-approved pharmacotherapies for Meth addiction and relapse to Meth use remains a substantial challenge for abstinent Meth addicts. One factor that contributes to craving and relapse is exposure to environmental or contextual cues associated with Meth use. This effect is the consequence of associative learning that occurs between the rewarding properties of drugs and …

Genetic And Environmental Influences In Delinquent Peer Affiliation: From The Peer Network Approach, Ilhong Yun, Jinseong Cheong, Anthony Walsh Jan 2011

Genetic And Environmental Influences In Delinquent Peer Affiliation: From The Peer Network Approach, Ilhong Yun, Jinseong Cheong, Anthony Walsh

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations

Mainstream criminologists have long maintained that delinquent peer group formation is largely a function of family-environmental variables, and have ignored self-selection into peer groups because of genetic proclivities. A small number of recent studies, however, suggest that genes are implicated in delinquent peer affiliation. Given the potentially far-reaching implication of such research findings, the authors replicate Beaver, Wright, & DeLisi's (2008) study, among others, using a direct measure of peer delinquency. That is, the authors analyze the Add Health genetic data employing a measure of peer delinquency which is based on the delinquency counts reported by peers themselves rather than …

Comparative Aspects Of Africana Philosophy And The Continental-Analytic Divide, Tommy L. Lott Jan 2011

Comparative Aspects Of Africana Philosophy And The Continental-Analytic Divide, Tommy L. Lott

Comparative Philosophy

Critical engagement involving philosophers trained in continental and analytic traditions often takes its purpose to be a reconciliation of tensions arising from differences in style, or method. Critical engagement in Africana philosophy, however, is rarely focused on method, style, or orientation because philosophic research in this field, regardless of orientation, has had to accommodate its empirical grounding in disciplines outside of philosophy. I focus primarily on the comparative dimensions of three important strands of this research: (1) a history of ideas, (2) a problem-orientation, and (3) a sub-area specialization, to indicate why a need to reconcile tensions between continental and …

War Courts: Terror's Distorting Effects On Federal Courts, Collin P. Wedel Jan 2011

War Courts: Terror's Distorting Effects On Federal Courts, Collin P. Wedel

Legislation and Policy Brief

In recent years, federal courts have tried an increasing number of suspected terrorists. In fact, since 2001, federal courts have convicted over 403 people for terrorism-related crimes. Although much has been written about the normative question of where terrorists should be tried, scant research exists about the impact these recent trials have had upon the Article III court system. The debate, rather, has focused almost exclusively upon the proper venue for these trials and the hypothetical problems and advantages that might inhere in each venue.

The war in Afghanistan, presenting a host of thorny legal issues, is now the longest …

Decent Daddy, Imperfect Daddy: Black Male Rap Artists’ Views Of Fatherhood And The Family, Matthew Oware Jan 2011

Decent Daddy, Imperfect Daddy: Black Male Rap Artists’ Views Of Fatherhood And The Family, Matthew Oware

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Research examining contemporary African-American male fathers has either presented them as being absent and uninvolved in their children’s lives (Moynihan 1965; Anderson 1999) or engaged with their children—despite structural or institutional constraints they face (Edin et al., Ann Am Acad Polit Soc Sci 621:149–177, 2009; Reynolds, Ann Am Acad Polit Soc Sci 624:12–28, 2009). Scant scholarship explores the medium that provides black males their own voices—rap music—in regards to their beliefs about the family. This exploratory research examines how black male rappers talk about motherhood, fatherhood, and parenthood. The content analysis of 391 of rap songs from the years 2004 …

The Crime Victim’S Expanding Role In A System Of Public Prosecution: A Response To The Critics Of The Crime Victims’ Rights Act, Paul G. Cassell, Steven Joffee Jan 2011

The Crime Victim’S Expanding Role In A System Of Public Prosecution: A Response To The Critics Of The Crime Victims’ Rights Act, Paul G. Cassell, Steven Joffee

NULR Online

The American criminal justice system is often envisioned as one in which public prosecutors pursue public prosecutions on behalf of the public—leaving no room for crime victims’ involvement. However, state and federal statutes and state constitutional amendments have challenged this vision. Perhaps the best example of such a challenge comes from the Crime Victims’ Rights Act (“CVRA”), a federal statute passed by Congress in 2004 that guarantees victims a series of rights in federal criminal proceedings.

The Response Of American Police Agencies To Digital Evidence, Hamdi Yesilyurt Jan 2011

The Response Of American Police Agencies To Digital Evidence, Hamdi Yesilyurt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Little is known about the variation in digital forensics practice in the United States as adopted by large local police agencies. This study investigated how environmental constraints, contextual factors, organizational complexity, and organizational control relate to the adoption of digital forensics practice. This study integrated 3 theoretical perspectives in organizational studies to guide the analysis of the relations: institutional theory, contingency theory, and adoption-of-innovation theory. Institutional theory was used to analyze the impact of environmental constraints on the adoption of innovation, and contingency theory was used to examine the impacts of organizational control on the adoption of innovation. Adoption of …

Human Rights Revisionism And The Canadian Parliamentary Coalition To Combat Antisemitism, Susan Ferguson, James Cairns Jan 2011

Human Rights Revisionism And The Canadian Parliamentary Coalition To Combat Antisemitism, Susan Ferguson, James Cairns

Journalism

This article focuses on the Canadian Parliamentary Coalition to Combat Antisemitism (CPCCA): a self-appointed group of parliamentarians dedicated to extinguishing what it calls “the new antisemitism.” Working from a Gramscian perspective, we identify key discursive strategies in coalition publications and testimony and argue that despite the CPCCA’s pretence to being a forum for liberal-pluralist debate, in fact it is engaged in an ideological reframing of human rights designed to restrict political debate. It does so, paradoxically, by drawing on the language of left-liberalism, which contrasts with recent ideological interventions aiming to secure the priorities of the neo-liberal state.

Resolving The Qualified Immunity Dilemma: Constitutional Tort Claims For Nominal Damages, James E. Pfander Jan 2011

Resolving The Qualified Immunity Dilemma: Constitutional Tort Claims For Nominal Damages, James E. Pfander

Faculty Working Papers

Scholars have criticized the Court's qualified immunity decision in Pearson v. Callahan on the ground that it may lead to stagnation in the judicial elaboration of constitutional norms. Under current law, officers sued in their personal capacity for constitutional torts enjoy qualified immunity from liability unless the plaintiff can persuade the court that the conduct in question violated clearly established law. Pearson permits the lower courts to dismiss on the basis of legal uncertainty; it no longer requires the courts to address the merits of the constitutional question. This essay suggests that constitutional tort claimants should be permitted to avoid …
