Improving Road Safety Through Deterrence-Based Initiatives : A Review Of Research, Jeremy D. Davey, James E. Freeman Feb 2011

Improving Road Safety Through Deterrence-Based Initiatives : A Review Of Research, Jeremy D. Davey, James E. Freeman

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

The efficacy of road safety countermeasures to deter motorists from engaging in illegal behaviours is extremely important when considering the personal and economic impact of road accidents on the community. In many countries, deterrence theory has remained a cornerstone of criminology and criminal justice policy, particularly within the field of road safety, as policy makers and enforcement agencies attempt to increase perceptions regarding the certainty, severity and swiftness of sanctions for those who engage in illegal motoring behaviours. Using the Australian experience (particularly the tremendous amount of research into drink driving), the current paper reviews the principles underpinning deterrence theory, …

While many electronic resource platform vendors are COUNTER compliant, very few are SUSHI compliant. How can these COUNTER reports from nonSUSHI vendors be downloaded automatically? SUSHI Chef is a comprehensive solution for collecting and analyzing COUNTER usage data from various platform vendors. At Portland State University, we currently use SUSHI Chef to automatically download and analyze COUNTER usage reports from 34 of our largest vendors. Our goal is to share this application with other libraries, so they can simplify the process of collecting usage reports from various vendors. In addition, SUSHI Chef compiles and analyzes this usage data and creates …

Has Foreign Direct Investment Exhibited Sensitiveness To Crime Across Countries In The Period 1999-2004? And If So, Is This Effect Non-Linear?, Evangelos Constantinou Feb 2011

Has Foreign Direct Investment Exhibited Sensitiveness To Crime Across Countries In The Period 1999-2004? And If So, Is This Effect Non-Linear?, Evangelos Constantinou

Undergraduate Economic Review

In the present paper one finds a cross country examination for the effect of crime on Foreign Direct Investment, over a seven year period covering the years 1998-2004. We extend literature by controlling for crime endogeneity, considering financial crimes and finally testing for heterogeneous crime effects according to country’s wealthiness. The system GMM estimator is adopted as it allows to treat variables as endogenous and corrects bias when a lagged dependent variable is used. We confirm earlier literature that only violent related crimes seem to affect FDI. While, we fail to find evidence supporting differentiated crime effect depending to country’s …

Latina Immigrant Women And Domestic Violence: Likelihood Of Reporting To Mid-South Police, Kimberly Mathis Pitts Feb 2011

Latina Immigrant Women And Domestic Violence: Likelihood Of Reporting To Mid-South Police, Kimberly Mathis Pitts

Sociology ETDs

Domestic violence occurs across all ethnic and racial groups and affects women of all ages and socio-economic backgrounds. However, research shows that battered women of Latin American descent are less likely to seek help from either formal or informal sources (West, Kantor, & Jasinski, 1998) and research done on Latina women in shelters suggest that these women are more likely to stay longer in an abusive relationship before seeking help (Torres, 1991). To contribute to the growing body of literature on race and domestic violence, this research will examine particular situational and individual-specific characteristics of domestic violence incidents experienced by …

Alcohol-Related Attentional Bias: The Role Of Support Networks, Kevin Hallgren Feb 2011

Alcohol-Related Attentional Bias: The Role Of Support Networks, Kevin Hallgren

Psychology ETDs

Previous research has shown that drinking levels are influenced by social networks, yet causal mechanisms that explain this relationship are poorly understood. The present study assessed alcohol-related attentional bias as a hypothesized mechanism connecting social support with drinking. Using a 10-minute writing assignment, 84 participants were randomly assigned to focus on a network member that was either a heavy or light drinker. Modified Stroop tests assessed alcohol-related attentional bias before and after the assignment by measuring response latencies for naming font colors for alcohol and neutral words presented on a computer screen. Drinking quantity, alcohol-related problems, and acceptance were assessed …

Motherhood And Desistance: The Influence Of Children In Women's Offending, Erin Kleymann Feb 2011

Motherhood And Desistance: The Influence Of Children In Women's Offending, Erin Kleymann

Sociology ETDs

An increasing number of women are being incarcerated, of which almost 80% are mothers. Many of these women have children who they wish to reconnect with upon release. Desistance research, which has focused on male populations, finds that conventional social bonds increase odds of desistance. However, there are few studies of womens desistance and it is unclear if social bonds exhibit the same affect for females. Using desistance literature, social control, and strain theories, I examine the Glueck Women's Reformatory Study data from the 1920's. I focus on two key questions: Is motherhood important to desistance? And under what conditions …
