Seventy Times Seven: Forgiveness As A Moderator In The Relationship Between Anger And Violent Crime, Elisabeth Marie Spratto
Seventy Times Seven: Forgiveness As A Moderator In The Relationship Between Anger And Violent Crime, Elisabeth Marie Spratto
Senior Honors Theses
Forgiveness is an important quality for the maintenance of successful relationships, and it also has physical and emotional benefits. In contrast, anger, while sometimes positive, can also lead to aggressive or violent behavior, particularly when combined with a desire for revenge. Anger has been repeatedly shown to play a significant role in the commission of crimes; what is less clear is the role forgiveness can play in that relationship. Given that forgiveness has been shown to play a role in anger dissipation, it is logical to suppose that its contribution may be considerable. This study investigated whether forgiveness played a …

An Exploratory Study Of Predictors Of Academic Success In A Graduate Nursing Program, Lori B. Brown
Masters Theses
Identifying qualified students who are most likely to be successful in their graduate nursing studies is the goal of the admission process. Because fiscal and human resources are often limited, it is important that universities admit students who have the academic capabilities necessary to complete the degree requirements. This study attempted to determine whether the established admission criteria for graduate nursing students at Grand Valley State University (GVSU) reliably predict success within the graduate nursing program and if so, whether any one criterion is a better predictor of success. For the purpose of this study, success was defined as completion …

From Overview, p. 1:
The Task Force for John Jay Online convened over a five month period between the end of September 2010 and the end of February 2011 to develop a multi‐year plan to expand online offerings at John Jay College. By building on the earlier, comprehensive effort of the Task Force for Distance Learning Policy and Practice, which issued its final report in August 2007, and on the experience of the MPA‐IG program, which recently completed its first year and issued an assessment report in the fall 2010, the task force aimed to contribute to the College’s history …

Sacrificing The Child To Convict The Defendant: Secondary Traumatization Of Child Witnesses By Prosecutors, Their Inherent Conflict Of Interest, And The Need For Child Witness Counsel, Tanya Asim Cooper
Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal
The article argues that the criminal justice system often fails to protect child witnesses, causing them further trauma and harm. It contends that current legal protections, such as accommodations for testimony, are insufficiently enforced and that child witnesses need independent legal representation to safeguard their interests. The author advocates for systemic reforms to prioritize the well-being of child witnesses and ensure their voices are heard in court without compromising their mental health.

Etsu Today - Spring 2011, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University
ETSU Today [magazine]
On Monday, October 2, 1911, 29 students arrived at a place that had been, only a few years earlier, a piece of farmland. They were the first to enroll at East Tennessee State Normal School. Some sought credentials for teaching; others entered the new field of domestic science in the hope of becoming better homemakers. They took a chance, these pioneering 29. Some gave up jobs. Some abandoned chores on the family farm. They were uncertain about what they would find on this campus where cows had once grazed. Its state appropriation for operation and maintenance was under $36,000 for …

Gendering Consitutional Design In Post-Conflict Societies, Dina Francesca Haynes, Fionnuala Ni Aolain, Naomi Cahn
William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice
This article commences with a discussion of transitional constitutional
design and the ways in which the branches of government
relate to one another, focusing on the consequences of these structures
for women. We are convinced that an analysis of the rights-bearing
portions of a constitution alone is insufficient to fully capture the way
in which power is structured and experienced. Consistent with other
scholars, we start from the view that “constitutions are derived from
a social contract between the constituents who will be governed and
the political actors who will govern; they explain how the society
and government will operate …

State Methamphetamine Precursor Policies And Changes In Small Toxic Lab Methamphetamine Production, Duane C. Mcbride, Yvonne Terry-Mcelrath, Jamie Chriqui, Jean O'Connor, Curtis J. Vanderwaal, Karen Mattson
Faculty Publications
Domestic production of methamphetamine in small toxic labs (STLs) results in significant community safety and health consequences. This paper examines the effects of state-level policies implemented in the middle of the last decade in reaction to a rapid increase in STL labs. These policies focused on controlling access to the methamphetamine precursor chemicals ephedrine and pseudoephedrine and the relationship of such policies with actual STL seizure rates. Data include (a) primary legal research on state laws/regulations in all 50 states in effect as of October 1, 2005; and (b) STL seizure counts for 2004–2006. Results from random effects cross-sectional time-series …

Rethinking The Sovereign Status Of The Holy See: Towards A Greater Equality Of States And Greater Protection Of Citizens In United States Courts, James Fantau
Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law
The note advocates for the reclassification of the Holy See from a sovereign state to an instrumentality under the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act (FSIA). This change would enhance legal accountability, particularly in cases involving sexual abuse scandals, by allowing plaintiffs to sue the Holy See more effectively. The argument is based on legal tests, including the core functions test and the legal characteristics test, which suggest that the Holy See functions more as an instrumentality of the Vatican City State rather than a sovereign entity.

The Problems Of Administration Of Justice On Female Offenders In Nigeria, Chioma Daisy Ebeniro
The Problems Of Administration Of Justice On Female Offenders In Nigeria, Chioma Daisy Ebeniro
African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies
The Nigerian Criminal Justice system arose as a part of the State to protect and promote the interests of the citizens of the country. By administering justice the legal order of the State is ensured. But in the administration of the law, certain principles which must be adhered to are violated, such as the rule of due process, legal equality and equity on female offenders. These violations of the rights of female offenders seem to be exacerbated by the very existence of economic, political, social and cultural inequalities operational in the socio-economic order of Nigeria. This paper contends that the …

Representation And Recruitment: A Three-Part Analysis Of The Police Hiring Process Within New York State, Michelle Comeau
Representation And Recruitment: A Three-Part Analysis Of The Police Hiring Process Within New York State, Michelle Comeau
Theses
This thesis consists of three separate analyses, each of which examines the representation of women, African Americans, and Latinos in the police organization in some form. The initial study compares department representation to that of the community in regards to race or ethnicity and gender. This is followed by the second study, which looks at the hiring process of one department within a mid-sized city (Rochester, NY) in detail, noting attrition by majority/minority status at each hurdle applicants' face. The study portion of this thesis concludes by utilizing data from the second study to create a model of attrition for …
