Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity
In today’s computer savvy world it is no longer interesting to discuss digital tools purely as means in themselves. The growth of abstract exponential systems or the generation of modulated patterns for their own sake simply strain justification in light of real-world concerns such as climate change, decaying cities, and economic crises. However, the impact of explicit logic and computational thinking on design and design process remains substantial. So we continue to pursue evolving digital techniques in hope that they prompt innovative design strategies and creative organizational, effectual, or material innovations that align with the evolving technologies which shape contemporary …

Our Lamb Has Conquered, Let Us Follow Him!: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Seal Of The Moravian Church Using Sonja Foss' Visual Rhetoric Schema And Cara Finnegan's Image Vernacular, Bethany L. Conrad
Masters Theses
This study rhetorically and visually analyzed the seal of the Moravian Church using Sonja Foss' theory of visual rhetoric and Cara Finnegan's image vernacular. Two versions of the seal were analyzed to provide a more thorough assessment of the function of the seal. Foss' theory and Finnegan's framework provide a method for analysis that explores the history, obvious elements and themes, implied concepts and themes, and the functions of the artifact. Using these frameworks, this study found that four themes emerged. The seal acts as a representation of the Moravian church, a calling, a promise, and a reminder for those …

Collective Intelligence Ratio: Measurement Of Real-Time Multimodal Interactions In Team Projects, Paul Kim, Donghwan Lee, Youngjo Lee, Chuan Huang, Tamas Makany
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
PurposeWith a team interaction analysis model, the authors sought to identify a varying range of individual and collective intellectual behaviors in a series of communicative intents particularly expressed with multimodal interaction methods. In this paper, the authors aim to present a new construct (i.e. collective intelligence ratio (CIR)) which refers to a numeric indicator representing the degree of intelligence of a team in which each team member demonstrates an individual intelligence ratio (IR) specific to a team goal.Design/methodology/approachThe authors analyzed multimodal team interaction data linked to communicative intents with a Poisson‐hierarchical generalized linear model (HGLM).FindingsThe study found evidence of a …
Paradox, Promise And Public Pedagogy: Implications Of The Federal Government’S Digital Education Revolution, Rachel Buchanan
Paradox, Promise And Public Pedagogy: Implications Of The Federal Government’S Digital Education Revolution, Rachel Buchanan
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The use of digital technology in the classroom is a significant issue for teachers as they are under increasing pressure to teach in technologically mediated ways. This ‘digital turn’ in education has culminated in the Australian federal government’s Digital Education Revolution, which represents a multi-billion dollar commitment to putting computers in schools and the implementation of technological pedagogical practice. This paper focuses on the confluence between globalised economic process, the Digital Education Revolution, and the discourse of the digital native; and describes the way in which students’ use of digital technologies is identity forming. I examine the Digital Education Revolution …

Postearthquake Recovery Of A Water Distribution System: Discrete Event Simulation Using Colored Petri Nets, Ronaldo Luna, Nandini Balakrishnan, Cihan H. Dagli
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Planning and preparedness is essential for any resilient infrastructure system. Modeling and simulation give engineers and planners a better understanding of the system and help them make better decisions. the objective of this study is to demonstrate an improved model for the disaster restoration process by using a discrete event simulation approach. the study also aims to help improve the post-earthquake restoration process by simulating restoration curves. in this paper, colored Petri nets are used to model the system and to simulate its behavior. the resource allocation after a rare event such as an earthquake differs from the resource allocation …

Acceleration Of Randomized Kaczmarz Method Via The Johnson-Lindenstrauss Lemma, Yonina C. Eldar, Deanna Needell
Acceleration Of Randomized Kaczmarz Method Via The Johnson-Lindenstrauss Lemma, Yonina C. Eldar, Deanna Needell
CMC Faculty Publications and Research
The Kaczmarz method is an algorithm for finding the solution to an overdetermined consistent system of linear equations Ax=b by iteratively projecting onto the solution spaces. The randomized version put forth by Strohmer and Vershynin yields provably exponential convergence in expectation, which for highly overdetermined systems even outperforms the conjugate gradient method. In this article we present a modified version of the randomized Kaczmarz method which at each iteration selects the optimal projection from a randomly chosen set, which in most cases significantly improves the convergence rate. We utilize a Johnson-Lindenstrauss dimension reduction technique to keep the runtime on the …

As librarians and archivists in higher education, it is both our charge and our challenge to meet and teach students wherever they are in their research journeys. A key component of this quest is gaining and refining the skills that make them "information literate." Information literacy, as defined by the American Library Association, is the ability to "recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information." However, "information" is not limited to textual documents; increasingly, students across disciplines are using images in for their coursework. Unfortunately, visual and image literacy skills …

Altered Spatial Frequency Content In Paintings By Artists With Schizophrenia, Daniel Graham, Ming Meng
Altered Spatial Frequency Content In Paintings By Artists With Schizophrenia, Daniel Graham, Ming Meng
Dartmouth Scholarship
While it is difficult to imagine the way someone with mental illness perceives the world, paintings produced by mental illness sufferers with artistic talents offer a hint of this experience. Here we analyze these images in terms of statistics related to low-level visual processing. It is known that art in general possesses regular spatial frequency amplitude spectra, probably due to factors including luminance compression, approximation of natural scene spatial statistics, media, and aesthetics. Whatever the contributions of those factors may be, would the same ones apply for artists with schizophrenia? We find that spatial frequency content in paintings by five …

An Empirical Investigation Of Virtual World Projects And Metaverse Technology Capabilities, Dawn Owens, Alanah Davis, Deepak Khazanchi, Ilze Zigurs
An Empirical Investigation Of Virtual World Projects And Metaverse Technology Capabilities, Dawn Owens, Alanah Davis, Deepak Khazanchi, Ilze Zigurs
Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications
Metaverses are immersive three-dimensional virtual worlds (VWs) where people interact with each other and their environment, using the metaphor of the real world but without its physical limitations. Unique technology capabilities of metaverses have the potential to enhance the conduct of virtual projects, but little is known about virtual worlds in this context. Virtual project teams struggle in meeting stated project outcomes due to challenges related to communication, shared understanding, and coordination. One way to address these challenges is to consider the use of emerging technologies, such as metaverses, to minimize the impact on virtual project teams. Applying a theoretical …
