The Contested Reputation Of Nathan Bedford Forrest: A Case Study In Rhetoric And Regional Identity Formation, Paul David Wangsvick May 2011

The Contested Reputation Of Nathan Bedford Forrest: A Case Study In Rhetoric And Regional Identity Formation, Paul David Wangsvick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation seeks to answer two questions: 1) How has the reputation of Nathan Bedford Forrest been presented by various scholars? 2) How are controversial reputations developed, maintained as well as challenged? I answer these questions by focusing on three specific controversies in Forrest's life; his role as a slave-trader, his role at the Battle of Fort Pillow, and his role in the Ku Klux Klan. My research focuses on three distinct sets of text: two Congressional testimonies, twenty-one biographies, and two-hundred-fourteen newspaper articles conveniently sampled from three newspapers. The consolidated data from the texts explores the various rhetorical strategies authors …

Shadow Of A Memory, Julie Lynn Hindman May 2011

Shadow Of A Memory, Julie Lynn Hindman

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

I have gained control over a whole space through the use of video projections, soundscaping and various other materials including some interactive media, enabling me to give the audience a fuller sensual experience. Multi‐media has made it possible for artists such as myself to create artworks that require more than a visual conversation with the viewer. The manipulation of memory by time became a physical manifestation in the environments that I create with the use of multi‐media installations.

Iread: An Application For Enhanced Reader Navigation On E-Reading Tablet Devices, Sarah Fedigan

Theses

As the digital world is becoming more and more a part of people's daily lives, the publishing industry has begun to evolve. The traditional print codex form of the book has been challenged by new technologies that have brought traditional books into the digital world--e-books. Reading has become evermore digital. Many of the current technologies for e-reading, whether it is the devices or the applications, are lacking navigation tools which limit the reader's experience in comparison to reading a printed book. The goal of this thesis project was to design an application for reading e-books, to be used on tablet …

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Over 70% of the world’s surface is covered with water, making it seem uninhabit-able. Or is it? From very early accounts in history man has been able to survive living on water for extended periods of time. Historically this time was a result of traveling, not necessarily a desire to live on the water. Even today, structures built for the aquatic environment fit more into the realm of tourism and leisure or a type of science / maritime study space, than a permanent dwelling. Living under or on water is certainly not a new idea. There are many science fiction …

(Don't) Stop Playing That Game: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Video Game Addiction Stereotype, Chet Daniel Breaux May 2011

(Don't) Stop Playing That Game: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Video Game Addiction Stereotype, Chet Daniel Breaux

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The growing popularity of game addiction discourse has necessitated study of how video game critics rhetorically construct addiction. In the following thesis, I analyze contemporary examples of texts that link game addiction to drug abuse. I use Robert Cover’s analysis of how game addiction stereotypes form in conjunction with Aristotle’s rhetorical principles to isolate the persuasive appeals used by authors to rhetorically construct game play as addictive. These addiction arguments, however, are rooted in a larger historical context, and I present examples of game guidebooks and comic books published in the late 1970s and early 1980s to illustrate their rhetorical …

Sex, Size And Behavior In Wolf Spiders (Araneae, Lycosidea), May 2011, Nina Koroma May 2011

Sex, Size And Behavior In Wolf Spiders (Araneae, Lycosidea), May 2011, Nina Koroma

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Lycosids, or Wolf spiders, are widespread in many habitats and are important predators on leaf litter arthropods. They are highly territorial yet roam to forage. When they encounter another wolf spider they may fight, flee or court them. To determine whether Wolf spider size or sex determined agonistic or courting behavior, thirty spiders were captured and placed in pairs of male-male, female-female, and male-female for a short period of time. Size was not found to be a determining factor. However, female-female interactions elicited significantly more aggression than either male-female or male-male encounters. Additionally, avoidance was seen as the primary response …

You Belong Here: An 'Interpellative' Approach To Usability, Alicia Hatter May 2011

You Belong Here: An 'Interpellative' Approach To Usability, Alicia Hatter

All Dissertations

Given the participatory, immersive Web 2.0 culture that characterizes digital experiences today, what is traditionally understood as 'usability' is insufficient to drive the engagement Web 2.0 audiences both crave and have come to expect from best-in-class interfaces. Thus, this dissertation presents a 'constructivist' vision of usability that helps designers 'speak' to audiences who demand excellence, and who will leave when confronted with mediocrity. The constructivist practice of usability occurs through what I call 'interpellative design.'
Interpellative design is both a complement to, and a critique of, 'accommodationist' approaches to usability (Howard, 2010a) which tend to be associated with technical problem …

The Integral Role Of Organizational Characteristics And Their Impact On Lean Implementation Success, John J. Cooper May 2011

The Integral Role Of Organizational Characteristics And Their Impact On Lean Implementation Success, John J. Cooper

Dissertations

ABSTRACT The increasingly competitive nature of the manufacturing industry has forced manufacturers to examine alternatives to traditional management philosophies. Although lean's success had been proven it was not uncommon for companies that opt to implement lean concepts to meet with mixed results and sometimes even outright failure. The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between organizational characteristics and issues associated with lean implementation. The study identified the following organizational characteristics (a) organizational leadership, (b) organizational culture, and (c) organizational change and examined the role each played in lean implementation efforts. The study also looked at sixteen individual …

Entangled Relationships Illustrated Through Parasitic Plants, Colleen Beyer

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This thesis paper examines the use of natural forms to metaphorically represent human bonds in my creation of the series of works for my MFA Thesis Exhibition based on interacting relationships between plants. My images focus on parasitic plants, as a metaphor for restrictive and binding aspects of human relationships. Several aspects of my work include psychological influences, my observations of the natural world, my artistic process and my major artistic influences. Chapter I focuses on the formation of my interest in psychology as it relates to entangled personal relationships and the translation of these ideas into my art. Attachment …

Online Church: A Biblical Community, Jefferson Todd Mullins May 2011

Online Church: A Biblical Community, Jefferson Todd Mullins

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Faith and spirituality widely exist in the virtual world of the Internet, spanning the continuum of expression from the traditional to the abstract. This religious presence online includes every religion, and included Christianity. Whether one believes the Christian church is capable of existing online has much to do with one's perspective of the Internet and one's definition of church. The author will address the use of the Internet to build Christian community and establish the church in a virtual environment. Arguments for and against the church online will answer the question, "Is church online truly the church?"

(In)Significant Objects, Kurt A. Teeter May 2011

(In)Significant Objects, Kurt A. Teeter

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis describes my MFA Thesis Exhibition: (In)Significant Objects, which was on display at the Paul Mesaros Gallery at the West Virginia University Creative Arts Center from November 29 to December 11, 2010. The exhibition included twenty-one large-scale ceramic storage jars and this written thesis explains why I, as an artist/craftsman, still find significance in these objects. By basing my vessels on ancient Greek amphoras, I am indicating that these forms, though heavy and obsolete by contemporary American standards, still have a role as decorative objects expressing vitality, idealism, and active discovery.

How Am I Not Myself? A Semiotic Analysis Of Images, Michael G. Main May 2011

How Am I Not Myself? A Semiotic Analysis Of Images, Michael G. Main

HIM 1990-2015

There has been much debate in the history of philosophy aimed at determining what it is, exactly, that makes a person who and what she is. Varying theories have offered a wide range of concepts in pursuit of the answer to this question. Some thinkers, such as B.F. Skinner, have claimed that it is observable behavior patterns that determine who and what a person is. Yet other thinkers, such as Carl Jung, have attributed unconscious motivators as being determinative in deciphering who and what a person is. Jung claims that it is the conscious and unconscious working together that determines …

Imagined Interactions As A Link To Political Talk, Megan Lambertz May 2011

Imagined Interactions As A Link To Political Talk, Megan Lambertz

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

According to the imagined interaction theory (IIT), IIs are the cognitive processes where individuals indirectly experience past or future interactions through the process of imagination (Honeycutt, 2003). Retroactive IIs occur after a conversation takes place, whereas proactive IIs occur when individuals imagine a conversation before the interaction (Honeycutt, 2010). The current study examined individuals‟ imagined interactions (IIs) regarding conversations about politics with family members. Participants completed an online survey where they recorded retroactive and proactive IIs, and completed a set of measures regarding their family and political affiliation. Both proactive and retroactive IIs fell into eleven categories for content. Proactive …

Illuminating Exclusion: Constructions Of National Identity In The Washington National Cathedral's Stained Glass Windows, Maggie T. Gleason May 2011

Illuminating Exclusion: Constructions Of National Identity In The Washington National Cathedral's Stained Glass Windows, Maggie T. Gleason

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

The Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. offers itself as a national monument and spiritual center for the American people. Thousands of tourists and worshipers visit the Cathedral every year to admire its Neo-Gothic style architecture, stained glass windows, hand-carved sculpture and the general splendor of the massive medieval-inspired structure. I argue that the imagery and iconography of this ornamentation presents American national identity as white and Christian, an ideal that is cultivated through the exclusion and domination of minority racial groups and alternative belief systems in the Cathedral’s decorative program, through the stained glass windows.

In order to shed …

The Neural Substrates Of Multisensory Speech Perception, Audrey R. Nath May 2011

The Neural Substrates Of Multisensory Speech Perception, Audrey R. Nath

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Comprehending speech is one of the most important human behaviors, but we are only beginning to understand how the brain accomplishes this difficult task. One key to speech perception seems to be that the brain integrates the independent sources of information available in the auditory and visual modalities in a process known as multisensory integration. This allows speech perception to be accurate, even in environments in which one modality or the other is ambiguous in the context of noise. Previous electrophysiological and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments have implicated the posterior superior temporal sulcus (STS) in auditory-visual integration of …

Queering Gender: How Transgender College Student Navigate Gender, Rachel Jaggi May 2011

Queering Gender: How Transgender College Student Navigate Gender, Rachel Jaggi

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

In response to the “Doing Gender” theory as proposed by West and Zimmerman, some scholars have argued that the theory perpetuates gender inequality and leaves no room for social change. These scholars argue that research needs to be directed towards deconstructing the gender system, thereby “undoing gender.” Transgender individuals, who appear to be playing with the system of gender, provide an important conduit through which to examine the possibility of transcending the gender binary. I conducted semi-structured interviews and focus groups with transgender college students to examine the extent to which these individuals are able to overcome the dichotomous gender …
