How Far Would You Drive For Fresh Food? How Some Rural New Hampshire Residents Navigate A Dismal Food Landscape, Jennifer J. Esala Feb 2011

How Far Would You Drive For Fresh Food? How Some Rural New Hampshire Residents Navigate A Dismal Food Landscape, Jennifer J. Esala

Carsey Publications

Lack of access to food stores with healthy and affordable food is one of the central obstacles to eradicating hunger in America. Approximately 23.5 million Americans live more than a mile from a supermarket, which makes accessing healthy food more challenging. Among low income populations, especially those with young children and limited transportation, this distance can severely limit access to affordable and healthy foods. This brief reports the challenges that eighteen rural New Hampshire mothers face to secure healthy, affordable, and quality foods and suggests ways to help address these challenges.

Schools In Their Communities, Robert Simons Feb 2011

Schools In Their Communities, Robert Simons

Policy Briefs

The idea of school-community partnerships is intuitively attractive because of the benefits they can facilitate. These benefits include availability and access to complementary services to strengthen the focus on learning for students and teachers, and opportunities for continuing learning and skill development for parents and others in the community.1 However, there are also a number of practical challenges with the development of effective and sustainable school-community partnerships. This Policy Brief considers three models of partnerships in schools and communities that have been developed during the last fifteen years in Australia in response to a variety of national, regional, local and …

Urban Environmental Education From A Social-Ecological Perspective: Conceptual Framework For Civic Ecology Education, Keith G. Tidball, Marianne E. Krasny Jan 2011

Urban Environmental Education From A Social-Ecological Perspective: Conceptual Framework For Civic Ecology Education, Keith G. Tidball, Marianne E. Krasny

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

A variety of environmental education practices are emerging to address the needs of an increasingly urban population. Drawing from social-ecological systems and social learning theory, we propose a conceptual framework to stimulate research questions in urban environmental education. More specifically, our conceptual framework focuses on environmental education programs that are nested within and linked to community-based stewardship or civic ecology practices, such as community forestry, streamside restoration, and community gardening. It suggests ways in which educational programs, stewardship practice, and other social-ecological system components and processes interact through feedback loops and other mechanisms, as well as means by which urban …

No Place Like Home: Place And Community Identity Among North Country Youth, Genevieve R. Cox, Corinna J. Tucker Jan 2011

No Place Like Home: Place And Community Identity Among North Country Youth, Genevieve R. Cox, Corinna J. Tucker

Carsey Publications

This brief explores the link between rural youths’ identification with their community, their self-esteem, and their future plans. The panel study of New Hampshire’s Coos County youth offers a snapshot into the dynamics of a population that is developing its identity in a region that is undergoing an identity transformation of its own. Place identity may be influential in how individuals think of themselves and their futures, particularly for youth in the process of forming an identity. The study reveals the importance of developing community programs and activities for youth that create social ties to form a positive identification with …

Encouraging Private Investment In Energy Efficiency, Sarah Schindler Jan 2011

Encouraging Private Investment In Energy Efficiency, Sarah Schindler

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

Combating the negative effects of climate change requires finding ways to increase energy production while reducing energy demand. Many states have programs in place to encourage home and business owners to improve the energy efficiency of their buildings. Despite the clear financial and environmental benefits that result from energy efficiency upgrades, most people have not taken advantage of the programs being offered by their states. This paper begins by addressing the structure of federal and state energy efficiency programs, as well as the existing funding for those programs. It then describes key barriers that prevent energy efficiency programs from motivating …

The Management And Creation Of Knowledge: Do Wikis Help?, Catherine Bruen, Noel Fitzpatrick, Paul Gormley, Jen Harvey, Claire Macavinney

Other resources

Wikis are frequently cited in Higher Education research as appropriate and powerful web spaces which provide opportunities to capture, discuss, and review individual, group, project or organisational activities. These activities, in turn, offer possibilities for knowledge development by utilising wiki collaborative active spaces. The chapter uses selected case studies examples to illustrate the use of wikis to support online community based tasks, project development/process, collaborative materials development and various student and peer supported activities. A key focus of the chapter centres on evaluating the effectiveness (or otherwise) of wikis to create online communities to support knowledge management (development, retention and …

Citizen-Centered Health Promotion: Building Collaboration To Facilitate Healthy Living, Steven H. Woolf, Mercedes M. Dekker, Fraser Rothenberg Byrne, Wilhelmine Miller Jan 2011

Citizen-Centered Health Promotion: Building Collaboration To Facilitate Healthy Living, Steven H. Woolf, Mercedes M. Dekker, Fraser Rothenberg Byrne, Wilhelmine Miller

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Unhealthy behaviors, notably tobacco use; unhealthy diets; and inadequate physical activity are major contributors to chronic disease in the U.S. and are more prevalent among socioeconomically disadvantaged groups. Differences in the prevalence of unhealthy behaviors among communities with different physical, social, and economic resources suggest that contextual environmental factors play an important causal role. Yet health promotion interventions often are undertaken in isolation and with inadequate attention to these holistic social and economic influences on lifestyle. For example, clinicians' advice to patients to stop smoking or lose weight can help motivate people to change behaviors, but their ability to take …

Exploring Leadership Through International Education: Civic Learning Through Study Abroad In Uganda, Adam Weinberg, Rebecca Hovey, Carol Bellamy Jan 2011

Exploring Leadership Through International Education: Civic Learning Through Study Abroad In Uganda, Adam Weinberg, Rebecca Hovey, Carol Bellamy

Lewis Global Studies Center Staff Publications

Leadership education in the 21st century cannot ignore the global risks, opportunities and realities of our interconnected world; so too international education cannot avoid its responsibility to provide the knowledge and vision needed to resolve critical issues we will face as a global community. We argue that a model of international education is needed which acknowledges the diverse global community in which institutions are based and learning takes place. In linking leadership and international education, we propose an alternative approach to both based on recognition, reciprocity and responsibility toward others.

A Mixed-Methods Study Of Resident Readiness, Engagement, And Relocation During Mixed-Income Redevelopment, Laurie A. Walker Jan 2011

A Mixed-Methods Study Of Resident Readiness, Engagement, And Relocation During Mixed-Income Redevelopment, Laurie A. Walker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since 1990, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has supported mixed-income redevelopment (MIR) strategies to address the problems of concentrated urban poverty neighborhoods with traditional public housing structures. This study focused on two neighborhoods in Denver, Colorado, with more than 38% of the residents living in poverty, which are facing transit-oriented MIR in the coming years. Residents in both neighborhoods have engaged in formal planning processes and community organizing as a way to be prepared for the change.

The study posed three research questions: (1) what predicts a community's readiness for MIR, (2) what predicts resident involvement as …

Diamonds In The Rubble: The Women Of Haiti—Institutions, Gender Equity, And Human Development In Haiti, Tonia Warnecke, Andrew Padgett Jan 2011

Diamonds In The Rubble: The Women Of Haiti—Institutions, Gender Equity, And Human Development In Haiti, Tonia Warnecke, Andrew Padgett

Student-Faculty Collaborative Research Publications

Although Haiti's 2010 earthquake brought to light the inconceivable poverty existing in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti's struggle for economic development long pre-dated that earthquake. One problem in Haiti is the high level of gender inequity, and we argue that human development theory is the best mode for change. We provide a brief background of Haiti's economic development over the last several decades, along with the status of women's rights and gender-differentiated socioeconomic outcomes. We analyze the ways that policy neglect of gender equity in Haiti has contributed to failed economic development in the past. Finally, we identify ways that other …

You're Supposed To Care: Faculty Motivations To Incorporate Service Learning Into Community College Classrooms, Carol A. Katowitz

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the motivations that cause some faculty in community colleges to embrace and actively pursue service learning pedagogy in their classrooms. It also identified the catalysts that move faculty to action in implementing this approach to instruction. The qualitative phenomenological case study approach was used to hear the stories of eight faculty members representing different areas of discipline in eight different campus locations in a Midwestern statewide community college system. Four primary themes and two sub-themes were identified through this study. The primary themes were (a) pedagogical connections to previous school experiences and …
