The Effects Of Video Game Play On Academic Performance, Jancee Wright Sep 2011

The Effects Of Video Game Play On Academic Performance, Jancee Wright

Modern Psychological Studies

The purpose of the present research is to determine whether playing video games impacts academic performance as determined by GPA. To accomplish this, 198 participants filled out a Gaming Habits Survey which was analyzed using a series of one-way ANOVAs. The study found that there was a significant effect of player status on GPA at the p < .01 level for the two conditions of player versus non-player [F (1, 169) = 7.08, p = .009]. Comparisons using descriptive statistics indicated that the mean GPA score for the player condition (M = 3.2, SD = .51) was significantly different than the non-player condition (M = 3.4, SD = .47). These results show that participants who indicated that they did play video games had significantly lower GPAs than participants who indicated that they did not play video games.

Perceived Organizational Motives And Consumer Responses To Proactive And Reactive Csr Authors, Mark D. Groza, Mya R. Pronschinske, Matthew Walker

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has emerged as an effective way for firms to create favorable attitudes among consumers. Although prior research has addressed the direct influence of proactive and reactive CSR on consumer responses, this research hypothesized that consumers’ perceived organizational motives (i.e., attributions) will mediate this relationship. It was also hypothesized that the source of information and location of CSR initiative will affect the motives consumers assign to a firms’ engagement in the initiative. Two experiments were conducted to test these hypotheses. The results of Study 1 indicate that the nature of a CSR initiative influences consumer attribution effects …

Ncaa Division I Basketball Facility Managers' Perceptions Of Terrorism, Robyn Lubisco Aug 2011

Ncaa Division I Basketball Facility Managers' Perceptions Of Terrorism, Robyn Lubisco

Health, Exercise, and Sports Sciences ETDs

The aftermath of September 11, 2001 left our country fighting a battle against terrorism. While our government has taken steps in protecting our country with the formation of the Department of Homeland Security, researchers in the field of Sports Management have begun to examine security preparation and risk management plans at sporting events. However, little research has examined risk assessment and risk communication. Securing sport venues starts with an individual analyzing all the potential risks with hosting an event. How risk is communicated and how risk is perceived can affect security preparation and risk management plans. The purpose of this …

A census sample of NCAA Division III athletic directors as listed in the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) 2009-2010 National Directory of …

On Sport and Society

Staged events are seldom convincing and often offensive. About two weeks ago the President of THE Ohio State University, Gordon Gee decided to stage a public apology for his comments several weeks earlier in which he used the Little Sisters of the Poor as a punch line for criticism of scheduling by lesser football teams than his group of tainted national champions.

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

If there’s any truth in the maxim, “Practice makes perfect,” then 43 area high school students recently took a step toward entrepreneurial perfection at the Gardner-Webb Godbold School of Business’s sixth annual B.E.S.T. Program, sponsored by the Cleveland County Board of Commissioners. The program, which stands for “Bringing Executives and Students Together,” enabled some of the area’s most successful and conscientious leaders to help the students put business and civic leadership principles into practice. “The high schools are doing such a great job teaching these kids about business,” said Dr. Anthony Negbenebor, dean of Gardner-Webb’s Godbold School of Business.

International Women's Soccer And Gender Inequality: Revisited, Joshua Congdon-Hohman, Victor Matheson Aug 2011

International Women's Soccer And Gender Inequality: Revisited, Joshua Congdon-Hohman, Victor Matheson

Economics Department Working Papers

A number of authors have identified the determinants of success in international sporting competitions such as the Olympics and soccer’s World Cup. This paper serves to update past work on international women’s soccer performance given the rapid development of the game over the past decade. We compare the determinants of men’s international soccer team performance with that of their female counterparts and find that a different set of variables are important in explaining success for the two genders. While economic and demographic influences hold for both, the impacts of specific political and cultural factors diverge. In particular, Latin heritage predicts …
