Social Justice Advocacy And Counselor Education: A Study Of Counselor Educators' And Counseling Interns' Perceptions Of Social Justice Advocacy Training, Darryl C. Steele Jan 2011

Social Justice Advocacy And Counselor Education: A Study Of Counselor Educators' And Counseling Interns' Perceptions Of Social Justice Advocacy Training, Darryl C. Steele

Dissertations

Social justice and advocacy have become increasingly important topics in counselor training. The 2001 Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) training standards require counselor education programs to provide studies in social justice and advocacy processes. Moreover, 2009 CACREP standards stipulate that accredited programs must provide advocacy training specific to each specialty area. The American Counseling Association (ACA) adopted advocacy competencies, in part, to guide this training (Goodman, 2009; Lewis, Arnold, House, & Toporek, 2003). Despite training standards and frameworks such as the ACA Advocacy Competencies to help prepare students for advocacy, few studies have explored …

Investigating Early Childhood Teachers' Stress And Social Supports: A Multi-Methods Approach, Ashley Diane Romero Jan 2011

Investigating Early Childhood Teachers' Stress And Social Supports: A Multi-Methods Approach, Ashley Diane Romero

LSU Master's Theses

Previous research has indicated that teaching is a high stress profession and that social supports may help to mediate teacher job stress. Ecological maps have been used in both research and other fields in order to study individuals’ social networks. Using a sample of ten Pre-K teachers, this study aims to answers two questions of inquiry: 1) Is the amount of reported social supports for Pre-K teachers negatively associated with reported stress?, and 2) What information does the eco-map interview give us about teacher’s social supports and stress? A multi-methods approach of both qualitative and quantitative techniques was used in …

Loving Me Or Loving You: Influencing The Attitudes And Behaviors Of Children Through A Prosocial Intervention, Shawna H. Gose Jan 2011

Loving Me Or Loving You: Influencing The Attitudes And Behaviors Of Children Through A Prosocial Intervention, Shawna H. Gose

LSU Master's Theses

Research indicates that narcissism may increase antisocial tendencies in children as young as preschool. In this quasi-experimental study, manners lessons on selfless, prosocial behavior were used as an intervention to decrease narcissism and antisocial behavior within second and third grade classrooms. Manners lessons provided children with opportunities to demonstrate prosocial attitudes toward others and thus were expected to decrease narcissism, increase empathy, decrease conduct problems and peer problems, and increase prosocial behavior. The present intervention positively influenced the external behavior of children as indicated by a decrease in conduct problems and peer problems and an increase in prosocial behavior for …

Through My Mother's Eyes: The Lifelong Journey Of Raising Children With And Without Disabilities, Lucie P. Lawrence Jan 2011

Through My Mother's Eyes: The Lifelong Journey Of Raising Children With And Without Disabilities, Lucie P. Lawrence

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Through the use of narrative, this study sought to document the life-altering journey of 32 mothers raising children at various stages of development and with a variety of disabilities. The main questions guiding this research study consider the lived experiences of mothers raising children with and without disabilities; what these mothers reveal about the journey with their children; how these mothers define motherhood; and how their definition of motherhood differs for each of their children. To address the research questions and capture the narratives of participants, a two-pronged qualitative methodology was applied, using diaries compiled by participants and in-depth interviews …

The Just And Beautiful City : Concepts Of Aesthetics And Justice In Contemporary American Urbanism, Anne Tyler Feldmann Jan 2011

The Just And Beautiful City : Concepts Of Aesthetics And Justice In Contemporary American Urbanism, Anne Tyler Feldmann

Honors Theses

his project investigates methods for addressing social injustices by reconciling equity planning with aesthetic design. The paper includes an analysis of Susan Fainstein 's criteria for the "just city," a review of environmental aesthetics theories, and an overview of theories that have reconciled justice and aesthetics previously. The project utilizes two case studies-Atlanta, Georgia's BeltLine and Norfolk, Virginia's waterfront redevelopment-to gauge the relevancy of these theories in current planning practices. Based on the findings, this paper argues that the "just city" should encompass equity, diversity, democracy, and beauty, which ought to be maximized in current and future plans for American …

Battling For History: Divisive And Unifying Figures Of The Salvadoran Civil War, Raquel Farah-Robison Jan 2011

Battling For History: Divisive And Unifying Figures Of The Salvadoran Civil War, Raquel Farah-Robison

Honors Papers

The Salvadoran Civil War (1980-1992), fought between the state's military and a leftist guerrilla group (the FMLN) ended in a peace agreement brokered by the United Nations that acknowledged both sides as equal partners in the reconstruction of civil society. As a result, both camps have been able to write their histories, erect their monuments and hold celebrations in honor of their martyrs. This project studies these competing narratives and the forms in which this history is preserved, and presents an analysis of four key figures, two who reflect the continuing fractured state of historical memory (Major Roberto d'Aubuisson and …

The Sentence, The Novel, And Autobiography: The Histories Of Reading And Self In Bunyan And Rousseau, Samuel Rowe Jan 2011

The Sentence, The Novel, And Autobiography: The Histories Of Reading And Self In Bunyan And Rousseau, Samuel Rowe

Honors Papers

This study analyzes late-seventeenth and eighteenth-century autobiographies in order to address questions regarding the relationship between the history of reading and the "history of the self" in the West. More particularly, it examines the treatment of reading and textuality in John Bunyan's "Grace Abounding" and Jean-Jacques Rousseau's "Confessions" in order to suggest that the historical phenomenon Michel Foucault describes as the "emergence of Man" can be understood in terms of the rise of mass print culture and subsequent development of extensive reading practices during the eighteenth century.

Getting Ahead Or Left Behind? The Politics And Policy Of Education Reform In The United States, Anna Elisabeth Brown Jan 2011

Getting Ahead Or Left Behind? The Politics And Policy Of Education Reform In The United States, Anna Elisabeth Brown

Honors Papers

Are teacher characteristics a significant factor in student learning? If so, which characteristics are effective? An original analysis of reading test scores of 5,000 fourth graders across the United States confirmed the difficulties researchers face when measuring teacher quality; it appears to account for only small variations in scores. Given the complexity, first, of the politics of "teacher quality" and, second, the improvement of primary education in the U.S., I offer some modest recommendations.

Divergent Discourses: Medical And Cultural Understandings Of Latina Reproductive Health In The Era Of Gardasil, Cindy Camacho Jan 2011

Divergent Discourses: Medical And Cultural Understandings Of Latina Reproductive Health In The Era Of Gardasil, Cindy Camacho

Honors Papers

In 2006, the vaccine Gardasil was distributed in the United States. Gardasil was created to block four strains of human papilloma virus (HPV), two of which cause about 70% of cervical cancer, and two others that cause 90% of genital warts. Although the Gardasil vaccine is an advance in the fight against cervical cancer, reports show that Latinas have low vaccination rates of Gardasil, disproportionately higher rates of cervical cancer and that cervical cancer screening rates are much lower for Latinas than women of other ethnicities. I argue that there is a disconnect between the Latina and medical discourses and …

Cultural Production And Ephemeral Art: Feminicide And The Geography Of Memory In Ciudad Juárez, 1998-2008, Alice Laurel Driver Jan 2011

Cultural Production And Ephemeral Art: Feminicide And The Geography Of Memory In Ciudad Juárez, 1998-2008, Alice Laurel Driver

Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies

This dissertation examines representations of feminicide victims in documentary film, novels, non-fiction, art, and graffiti and argues that these images express anxiety about they way women traverse and inhabit the geography of Ciudad Juárez, often giving precedence to the idea of the public female body as hypersexualized. In order to reclaim memory of the victims some cultural producers focus on the testimonial form in which victims’ families and other activists share their stories or construct informal memorials in the city; these remembrances later appear in works of non-fiction, film, and art, as markers of the process of creating and preserving …

School-Based Juvenile Probation And Police Partnerships For Truancy Reduction, Leanne F. Alarid, Barbara A. Sims, James Ruiz Jan 2011

School-Based Juvenile Probation And Police Partnerships For Truancy Reduction, Leanne F. Alarid, Barbara A. Sims, James Ruiz

Contemporary Issues in Juvenile Justice

Truancy places students at risk in primary and secondary education and is linked to conduct disorder, drug use, and delinquency. To prevent truancy and reduce risk, school-based proba-tion supervision has emerged within school districts in partnership with local law enforcement officers in an effort to enforce probation conditions for truant youths and prevent future delin-quency. This research uses key information interviews of knowledgeable stakeholders to examine the delivery of school-based probation supervision. Home visits and court hearings were perceived to be effective at reducing truancy and tardiness. This study affirms that strong lead-ership, information sharing, and involvement of parents were …

Disease, Medicine And Health, Diego Armus, A. López Denis Jan 2011

Disease, Medicine And Health, Diego Armus, A. López Denis

History Faculty Works

This article focuses on three overlapping trends in the historical study of human responses to illness, labeled as “new history of medicine, history of public health, and sociocultural history of disease.” The topics range from colonial epidemiology and pharmacopoeia to twentieth-century public health institutions and urban hygiene. But a consistent focus on the social, cultural, and symbolic components of diseases and cures unifies this historiography and distinguishes it from the narrower scope of the long-established field of the history of medicine.

Rhetoric Of Reconciliation: Implications From Bonhoeffer's [Work] For A Communicative Praxis Of Reconciliation Grounded In Christian Narrative, Charles E. Thomas Jan 2011

Rhetoric Of Reconciliation: Implications From Bonhoeffer's [Work] For A Communicative Praxis Of Reconciliation Grounded In Christian Narrative, Charles E. Thomas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Reconciliation may broadly be considered as the repairing, restoring, and mending of that which has been broken, namely relationships be they interpersonal, communal, or national due to some type of conflict between two parties. This project seeks to establish a Rhetoric of Reconciliation as a narratively constructed ethical communicative praxis. The first chapter will consist of an overview of reconciliation. In the second chapter the major theoretical frameworks and scholarship in the field of reconciliation will be considered to establish a working understanding of the particular communicative processes of reconciliation and how these processes are narratively grounded. The major theoretical …

Researchers At Work: Assessing Needs For Content And Presentation Of Archival Materials, Janet Hauck Jan 2011

Researchers At Work: Assessing Needs For Content And Presentation Of Archival Materials, Janet Hauck

Library Faculty Scholarship

In the past, systems that present digitized archival materials were often created with limited knowledge of their audiences’ needs and greater focus on the materials. Organizations must ask whether digital delivery systems are sufficiently effective to merit financial support. As part of the planning process for a digital delivery system at the Orbis Cascade Alliance, the Northwest Digital Archives (NWDA) consortium conducted a study of its core researchers’ needs for the selection and presentation of archival materials online. With the assistance of NWDA members, 19 subjects were recruited for hour-long interviews. Although the number of subjects meant that the conclusions …

Esperienza Elementare E Dritto = Elementary Experience And Law, Paolo G. Carozza, Andrea Simoncini, Lorenza Violini, Marta Cartabia Jan 2011

Esperienza Elementare E Dritto = Elementary Experience And Law, Paolo G. Carozza, Andrea Simoncini, Lorenza Violini, Marta Cartabia

Books

Translated by Mariangela Sullivan

Preface by Julián Carrón

...The essays making up this book reveal that law finds itself at a crossroads that is more anthropological than juridical. Indeed one’s concept of law flows directly from one’s concept of humanity. For this reason it seems to me entirely appropriate that the authors have refused to reduce elementary experience to doctrine or other abstract formulas to be imposed mechanically upon reality. Only an individual capable of feeling one’s own elementary experience alive within herself can make a valuable contribution to the debate that will lead us through this crossroads in the …

The Political Economy Of Jus Cogens, Paul B. Stephan Jan 2011

The Political Economy Of Jus Cogens, Paul B. Stephan

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Article examines the basis of an asserted jus cogens exception to sovereign immunity. It demonstrates that the vision of jus cogens one embraces depends on background assumptions about the present and future of the international system. A robust conception of jus cogens assumes: (1) that independent judges and tribunals, informed by the views of non-state actors, can identify core international obligations and manage their tradeoffs with other values pursued by the international legal system, and (2) that the actions of independent judges and tribunals, informed by non-state actors, will influence state behavior. Doubts about the abilities of judges and …
