Interpretations And Anxiety During Initial Encounters In A Formal Business Networking Setting, Justin Hunter Jan 2011

Interpretations And Anxiety During Initial Encounters In A Formal Business Networking Setting, Justin Hunter

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

Many business professionals explore opportunities to develop relationships with others in their industry during coordinated business networking functions to potentially increase their clientele and strengthen their presence in their respective industry. This study analyzes initial interactions among business professionals during a business networking function utilizing symbolic interactionism and the theory of anxiety/uncertainty management. Both theories have been separately implemented in an abundance of theses over several decades to analyze the nature and implications with interpersonal communication among strangers; however, there is a significant lack of research dedicated to how strangers engage during initial business interactions at networking functions. This study …

Instrumental Variable Estimation Of A Spatial Autoregressive Panel Model With Random Effects, Badi H. Baltagi, Long Liu

Center for Policy Research

This paper extends the instrumental variable estimators of Kelejian and Prucha (1998) and Lee (2003) proposed for the cross-sectional spatial autoregressive model to the random effects spatial autoregressive panel data model. It also suggests an extension of the Baltagi (1981) error component 2SLS estimator to this spatial panel model.

Mathematics In The Age Of Technology: There Is A Place For Technology In The Mathematics Classroom, Helen Crompton Jan 2011

Mathematics In The Age Of Technology: There Is A Place For Technology In The Mathematics Classroom, Helen Crompton

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

In today’s world of ubiquitous computing there are a number of technologies available to K-12 educators for teaching and learning mathematics. However, Koehler and Mishra (2008) have described how teaching and learning with such technologies presents a “wicked problem,” as it can involve a number of variables, independent of each other and contextually bound, that need to be brought together. This article highlights the advantages technology offers for mathematics education and looks at some of the reasons behind the poor uptake, such as teacher beliefs and lack of training. A number of solutions are offered to address these issues, including …

Homelessness In Birmingham, Al: An Analysis Using The Local Homeless Management Information System And Surveys From Local Supportive Housing Programs, Adrian Kendall Smith

All ETDs from UAB

A homeless management information system (HMIS) records and stores a client's demographic information and his/her service utilization history while allowing for case management opportunities between the client and service provider. HMISs are changing the way communities serve their homeless populations and how agencies serving the homeless interact with their clients and other agencies. With a focus on the city of Birmingham, its local HMIS, and the local agencies using HMIS this research seeks to answer the following questions: How can the homeless management information system help us to better understand the homeless population in Birmingham? What are the different approaches …

When Research Setting Is Important: The Influence Of Subordinate Self-Esteem On Reactions To Abusive Supervision, James P. Burton, Jenny M. Hoobler, Mary C. Kernan Jan 2011

When Research Setting Is Important: The Influence Of Subordinate Self-Esteem On Reactions To Abusive Supervision, James P. Burton, Jenny M. Hoobler, Mary C. Kernan

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

In this paper, we argue that the conflicting theoretical views regarding the role that self-esteem plays in the decision to become aggressive can be explained by the particular research methodology used. Specifically, we examine how individuals respond to a perceived abusive supervisor in two settings: 1) using scenarios and 2) in a field study. Results indicate that individuals with high self-esteem are more likely to become aggressive in response to an abusive supervisor in settings where they are asked what they would do (using scenarios). However, in field research settings, where they are asked what they did do, individuals with …

Understanding Prostitutes And Prostitution In Democratic Burma, 1942–62 State Jewels Or Victims Of Modernity?, Tharaphi Than Jan 2011

Understanding Prostitutes And Prostitution In Democratic Burma, 1942–62 State Jewels Or Victims Of Modernity?, Tharaphi Than

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Prostitution in Burmese society, as in many South East Asian countries, is a taboo subject. Unlike prostitution in countries such as Thailand, however, prostitution in Burma does not attract strong media or scholarly debate. The state and the media in Burma, during both colonial and post-colonial periods, have tended and tend to see the problem of prostitution as one of ‘others’. Colonialism, a decline in morality and the corruption of women influenced by modernity or Western culture have often been portrayed as the culprits. This article analyses the Burmese terms for prostitutes and examines how prostitution was portrayed by the …

Cybercrime Victimization: An Examination Of Individual And Situational Level Factors, Fawn T. Ngo, Raymond Paternoster Jan 2011

Cybercrime Victimization: An Examination Of Individual And Situational Level Factors, Fawn T. Ngo, Raymond Paternoster

Criminology Sarasota Manatee Campus Faculty Publications

Using a sample of college students, we apply the general theory of crime and the lifestyle/routine activities framework to assess the effects of individual and situational factors on seven types of cybercrime victimization. The results indicate that neither individual nor situational characteristics consistently impacted the likelihood of being victimized in cyberspace. Self-control was significantly related to only two of the seven types of cybercrime victimizations and although five of the coefficients in the routine activity models were significant, all but one of these significant effects were in the opposite direction to that expected from the theory. At the very least, …

Book Review: Fair Play: The Ethics Of Sports, Dane C. Joseph

Faculty Publications - College of Education

During the past few years of my collegiate and youth-club coaching career, I have often found myself engrossed with many intellectual tasks in an attempt to improve both myself and my athletes' chances for success. Moral reasoning is, quite frankly, usually at the back of my mind, and only seems to come forth after some ethical problem arises that affects our team. Perhaps one reason for this neglectful behavior is that in contemplating the right course of action to take, I have often picked up books on sport ethics and frowned with dismay as its contents Jay embedded in a …

A Multiple Additive Regression Tree Analysis Of Three Exposure Measures During Hurricane Katrina, Andrew Curtis, Bin Li, Brian D. Marx, Jacqueline W. Mills, John Pine Jan 2011

A Multiple Additive Regression Tree Analysis Of Three Exposure Measures During Hurricane Katrina, Andrew Curtis, Bin Li, Brian D. Marx, Jacqueline W. Mills, John Pine

Faculty Publications

This paper analyses structural and personal exposure to Hurricane Katrina. Structural exposure is measured by flood height and building damage; personal exposure is measured by the locations of 911 calls made during the response. Using these variables, this paper characterises the geography of exposure and also demonstrates the utility of a robust analytical approach in understanding health-related challenges to disadvantaged populations during recovery. Analysis is conducted using a contemporary statistical approach, a multiple additive regression tree (MART), which displays considerable improvement over traditional regression analysis. By using MART, the percentage of improvement in R-squares over standard multiple linear regression ranges …

“Describing Our Whole Experience”: The Statistical Philosophies Of W.F.R. Weldon And Karl Pearson, Charles H. Pence Jan 2011

“Describing Our Whole Experience”: The Statistical Philosophies Of W.F.R. Weldon And Karl Pearson, Charles H. Pence

Faculty Publications

There are two motivations commonly ascribed to historical actors for taking up statistics: to reduce complicated data to a mean value (e.g., Quetelet), and to take account of diversity (e.g., Galton). Different motivations will, it is assumed, lead to different methodological decisions in the practice of the statistical sciences. Karl Pearson and W. F. R. Weldon are generally seen as following directly in Galton’s footsteps. I argue for two related theses in light of this standard interpretation, based on a reading of several sources in which Weldon, independently of Pearson, reflects on his own motivations. First, while Pearson does approach …

Living On The Edge: A Humanbecoming Perspective, Robin Peterson-Lund Jan 2011

Living On The Edge: A Humanbecoming Perspective, Robin Peterson-Lund

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Living on the edge is a universal lived experience. The humanbecoming theory of nursing science guided the study. The purposes of this investigation were to reveal the structure of the experience of living on the edge, to understand the lived experience of living on the edge, to reveal and gain insight into the unique ways people live their health. This understanding is essential for nurses to value the person's perspective of their personal health and quality of life. The participants were ten persons living in the frontier of the American west. A review of literature evaluated the existing body of …

Suicide Bombing: A Geopolitical Perspective, Haider Naqvi, Syed Faraz Kazim, Shafqat Huma Jan 2011

Suicide Bombing: A Geopolitical Perspective, Haider Naqvi, Syed Faraz Kazim, Shafqat Huma

Department of Psychiatry

Suicide bombing is a very complex phenomenon. It has been a focus of research in recent times. However inherent biases of researchers muddle the picture: researchers from western countries focus the issue around political liberty and notion of democracy, while those from Islamic countries tend to take the afterlife-reward notion as an incentive for suicide bombing. However in order to understand this complex phenomenon it is important to consider the contextual factors. In this review we have attempted to highlight various geopolitical factors which contribute to increased incidence of suicide bombing in South East Asia.
