Community And Identity In Contemporary Physical And Virtual Spaces: Toward An Integration, Ashley Caroline Woodworth

Open Access Theses

The notions of community and identity are discussed and the various elements of each concept are analyzed in terms of their manifestation in physical and virtual spaces. A comparison of community and identity in physical and virtual spaces highlights the interdependent nature of these experiences in the intersection of these two spaces. Modern society functions through the use of technology that is ever increasing in speed and efficiency. We rely more and more on virtual technology as a tool to maintain relationships, perform various tasks, communicate and interact with others, and to manage our self-presentations. Thus, the fundamental experiences of …

The ethnographic data was analyzed through the lens of Community Psychology, Chacian dance/movement therapy theory and Carl Rogers’ theory of creativity. The main research question that guided the study was: How do the participants of GPD experience this event emotionally, socially and/or spiritually? At the end, community, creativity and safety were the most important factors that emerged as …

Contrasting The Culture Of Polyamory And Monogamy, Joseph A. Santiago Mr May 2011

Contrasting The Culture Of Polyamory And Monogamy, Joseph A. Santiago Mr

Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer Center

As families get busier and become extended through marriage, adoption, and mutual commitments, people struggle to describe their relationships in familiar ways that gives them legitimacy as they expand out of the nuclear family model. The idea that Monogamy or Polyamory is the best form for relationships to take is just as an absurd notion as attempting to hold people to a monocultural idea of morality on these matters. Not educating people to understand and interact with each other through the diverse forms of family and relationships is causing a lot of pain and wrongly isolating many people. Regardless of …

Do Travelers Support Green Practices And Sustainable Development, Patrick Tierney, Mercedes Hunt, Pavlina Latkova May 2011

Do Travelers Support Green Practices And Sustainable Development, Patrick Tierney, Mercedes Hunt, Pavlina Latkova

Journal of Tourism Insights

A 2007 survey of managers from RCRA members found strong motivational support for green practices. These and other findings suggest there is broad support for green practices among resort managers. However, it is unclear the level of traveler support for eco-friendly practices. Study objectives were to: Investigate consumers’ attitudes toward environmentally responsible or green practices in the travel industry; identify green practices they’ve undertaken while traveling; explore factors influencing traveler adoption of green practices; and provide implications for the travel industry. In spring 2008 an intercept survey of travelers visiting the California Welcome Center at Pier 39 in San Francisco, …

Spring Break: Pulling In The Student Market, Sheila A. Scott-Halsell, Wanlanai Saiprasert

Journal of Tourism Insights

Spring Break is big business for many tourism destinations. Although many students are budget conscious, by sheer volume, they make a noteworthy financial impact on a destination and the local community. To better understand what pulls current domestic Spring Break travelers to their destination choice, a study was conducted evaluating the importance of Spring Break destination attributes in students’ trip decisions. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted which reduced 24 pull attributes to four core Spring Break decision making pull factors. The core factors identified are: Destination Attributes, Financial, Accessibility, and Uncertainty Avoidance. Further analysis demonstrated only limited significant differences in …

Understanding Resort Marketing Practices, Eric Brey, David K. Klenosky, Xinran Lehto, Alastair Morrison

Journal of Tourism Insights

Effective marketing plays an integral role in the success of hospitality and tourism businesses. While research has examined many aspects of the hospitality and tourism industry, the marketing of destination resorts has been largely ignored. This study addresses this gap by reporting the insights obtained from interviews conducted with North American resort marketing executives to assess their views on current resort marketing trends and practices. Based on a content analysis of this interview data, 18 topics were identified and organized into five categories: channels, relationships, targeting, technology and function. This paper provides a discussion of each topic, overviews implications of …

Reading Levels Of Rural And Urban Third Graders Lag Behind Their Suburban Peers, Suzanne E. Graham, Christine Teague May 2011

Reading Levels Of Rural And Urban Third Graders Lag Behind Their Suburban Peers, Suzanne E. Graham, Christine Teague

Carsey Publications

This brief examines the complex interplay of family, school, and place factors in the reading achievement levels of third grade students. Third grade reading achievement is critical to later academic and occupational success. Using data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, the authors report that suburban children realize greater gains in reading achievement from kindergarten to Grade 3 than their rural or urban counterparts. Rural students who were struggling readers at the beginning of kindergarten have lower average reading achievement in third grade than both urban and suburban students when children of the same socioeconomic status are compared. The differences …
