Challenges And Opportunities For New And Beginning Dairy Producers: A Pennsylvania Perspective, Lisa A. Holden, Jeffrey A. Hyde, Bradley J. Hilty, Erica Cowan

Journal of Extension

New and beginning dairy producers have challenges in building equity and developing strategies for sound succession plans. Dairy farm businesses are capital intensive, and an aging dairy farm owner population means that transition of these operations will be critical in the future. Focus groups with both senior farm owners and new dairy producers were used to better understand these challenges and to enable Extension professionals to create educational opportunities to meet the needs of new and beginning dairy producers. Keys for success that were identified included sound financial planning and purchasing animals as a strategy to grow equity.

Relationship Of Vitamin D Levels To Blood Pressure In A Biethnic Cohort, Rosario O. Sakamoto Jun 2011

Relationship Of Vitamin D Levels To Blood Pressure In A Biethnic Cohort, Rosario O. Sakamoto

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background: Serum hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] has been well-accepted as not an ordinary vitamin but a pro-hormone that has many benefits beyond its well-known effects on bone. Cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension remain a huge health burden and Blacks have been recognized to have higher prevalence of hypertension compared to non-Hispanic Whites. Despite increasing evidence of the benefits of vitamin D on blood pressure control, there is much more to be learned about the relationship of serum 25(OH)D to blood pressure among different ethnicities.

Purpose: The goal of this study was to determine whether vitamin D serum 25(OH)D levels were …

The Relation Of Fitness Assessment Feedback To Intrinsic Motivation And Physical Activity Among College Students, Laura Chandler

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Physical inactivity is a major public health concern in the United States and is no less of a concern among college students. According to the 2000 National College Health Assessment, as cited by Kilpatrick, Herbert, and Bartholomew (2005), only 38% of college students participate in regular vigorous activity, and only 20% participate in regular moderate activity. This study focused on how fitness assessment results affect intrinsic motivation for physical activity in college students. The specific mechanism examined was that between the constructs of intrinsic motivation, competence and autonomy from the self determination theory (SDT) and cognitive evaluation theory (CET). Approximately …

Yearnings: Stories Of Insecure Attachment And The Journey To Connect To God, John Bracy Jun 2011

Yearnings: Stories Of Insecure Attachment And The Journey To Connect To God, John Bracy

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Utilizing grounded theory and the semi-structured interviews of25 participants, this study sought to understand how an insecure attachment affects one's relationship with God. Participants' stories suggested that: I) one's struggle to connect with God was a part of their struggle to connect with others; 2) that experiencing others as safe and responsive contributed to building a more secure attachment with God; and 3) that attachment is less a fixed style and more of an ongoing process: defined as gradual changes made by the participants towards the set-goal of feeling safe and secure. Four major processes were identified: I) finding what …

Navigating Multiple Roles: Physicians Married To Non-Physician Professionals, Carlene Olivia Fider

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A qualitative study of the lived experiences of dual career couples in which one partner is a physician is being proposed to fulfill the requirements for a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Family Studies. The study will look specifically at how these couples manage the role expectations and demands from the home front as well as from the work front. The study will also investigate how these couples create time for the dyad considering the demands of both careers. While dual career couples have their distinct features, physician families that have dual career attachments have been under studied in regard …

The Effects Of Causal Attribution, Religiosity And Shared Beliefs On The Management Of Type 2 Diabetes, Lucretia Smith

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This dissertation was a secondary analysis of data gathered from 114 couples who had one spouse with type 2 diabetes. Diabetes management was the outcome variable. The predictor variables in this analysis included the couples' causal attribution, religiosity, and congruence regarding the aforementioned. The major theories framing this study were the Family Systems theory and the family stress models. Support was found also in the middle ranged Family Resilience Framework. From a systems approach, families affect, and are affected by, the management of a chronic disease such as type 2 diabetes. The Family Resilience Framework suggests that the family's belief …

Empowering And Engaging Teen Girls Through Media From The Perspective Of A Practitioner And Producer, Marie Celestin May 2011

Empowering And Engaging Teen Girls Through Media From The Perspective Of A Practitioner And Producer, Marie Celestin

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

Mainstream media plays an important part of our lives. For teens today, often labeled the “digital generation,” media sources affect the way they read, understand, and interpret information and are a critical influence on the way they see themselves. I have been a media critic since I was a teenager, but the Critical and Creative Thinking program allowed me to articulate my vision for a fairer representation of women and girls while tapping in my creative toolbox to produce original and bolder images of real girls through the G.I.R.L.S. (Growing Individuals Reacting to Life's Struggles) Project and GIRL TV—in short, …

Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications

This study reports a comparison of demographics, outdoor recreation activity patterns, and attitudes toward conservation issues collected via mail and online survey methods within a mixed-mode survey. Pennsylvania residents, randomly sampled by Survey Sampling, Inc., were invited in a pre-survey letter to complete the survey online, or through a paper survey mailed to their homes. Differences in outdoor recreation participation were generally small for wildlife-related activities, and were greater among non-wildlife-related outdoor recreation activities, with the Internet respondents generally reporting higher rates of participation. Analyses controlling for demographic variables showed a confounding influence on the relationships examined. Internet respondents tended …

High Quality Performances From “Community” Musical Groups: The Sometimes Conflicting Personal And Musical Requirements For A High Level Of Performance Combined With Sustainable Personal Satisfaction In A Long Surviving Musical Group. The Case Of The London Jazz Orchestra, Bill Skidmore

Leading Music Education International Conference

Sociological functionalist theory provides a suggestive array of ideas with which to conceptualize any social structure. Starting with the idea that a structure must perform certain functions in order to survive and fulfill its task, this sociological model sets the subject social structure in its "environment" of other social structures to which it relates, regarding the whole as a "social system." In the language of one prominent theorist of functionalism, survival of any structure in a social system requires the abstract functions of "adaptation," "goal attainment," "integration," and "pattern maintenance" all to be performed successfully. These structural level requirements provide …

A comparison of the two performing art forms demonstrates many similarities and some significant differences in their current position within an educational context and the challenges that potentially face the two streams. A small-scale qualitative study was conducted using interview methodology seeking data from a dance teacher (secondary school and private studio) investigating this teacher’s opinions on the issues identified above and the …

Fiduciaries, Federalization, And Finance Capitalism: Berle’S Ambiguous Legacy And The Collapse Of Countervailing Power, John W. Cioffi May 2011

Fiduciaries, Federalization, And Finance Capitalism: Berle’S Ambiguous Legacy And The Collapse Of Countervailing Power, John W. Cioffi

Seattle University Law Review

This Article engages problematic interpretations of Berle's thinking, as well as their implications for understanding Berle’s legacy and its relevance to some of the most critically important contemporary dilemmas of American law, policy, and politics. . . . Characterizing the New Deal, let alone the political economic and regulatory regime that emerged as its lasting legacy, as corporatist is imprecise, prone to misunderstanding, and largely erroneous. The misuse of corporatism as a term not only misconceives neocorporatism as a theory of governance and political economic ordering, but also obscures its core institutional and juridical attributes along with the variety of …

The Twilight Of The Berle And Means Corporation, Gerald F. Davis May 2011

The Twilight Of The Berle And Means Corporation, Gerald F. Davis

Seattle University Law Review

During the five decades after Berle and Means published The Modern Corporation and Private Property in 1932, their analysis became the dominant understanding of the American corporation. Social scientists, policymakers, and the broader interested public knew about the separation of ownership and control, the potentially fraught relations between shareholders and managers, and the image of the corporation as a social institution. Berle and Means’s view of an economy dominated by a handful of ever-larger corporations run by an unaccountable managerial class inspired scholarship from sociologists (who were convinced they were right) to financial economists (who wanted to prove them wrong) …

Berle And Veblen: An Intellectual Connection, Charles R.T. O'Kelley May 2011

Berle And Veblen: An Intellectual Connection, Charles R.T. O'Kelley

Seattle University Law Review

For O’Kelley’s contribution to Berle II, he chose to highlight the need for further research into the connection between The Modern Corporation and Private Property and the work of Thorstein Veblen, the father and intellectual inspiration of institutional economics. While the connection between Veblen and Modern Corporation is indisputable, the meaning of that connection has not been explored in any depth. O’Kelley provides a framework for thinking about the nature of Veblen’s influence on Modern Corporation and suggests that further research on Veblen’s influence would be most fruitful. O’Kelley then provides an initial account of how Veblen’s work may …

The Cosmetic Independence Of Corporate Boards, Nicola Faith Sharpe May 2011

The Cosmetic Independence Of Corporate Boards, Nicola Faith Sharpe

Seattle University Law Review

This Essay tackles a pervasive misperception on the part of regulators that director independence significantly increases the efficacy of corporate boards. In this Essay, I assert that such “cosmetic independence” is not enough to remedy the corporate failures of recent years. Cosmetic independence is independence that takes into account only a corporate director’s relationship with the corporation and not the tools a director needs to achieve substantive independence. These tools include time, information, and knowledge, all of which have been recognized as critical to effective decision-making processes in organizational behavior literature.

This Essay is critical of regulatory reforms intended to …

The Problem Of Social Income: The Entity View Of The Cathedral, Yuri Biondi May 2011

The Problem Of Social Income: The Entity View Of The Cathedral, Yuri Biondi

Seattle University Law Review

In 1960, Ronald H. Coase famously addressed the problem of externalities—actions of business firms that have harmful effects on others—or, as he renamed it, “the problem of social cost.” This Article seeks to address this problem through a comparative analysis of the alternative institutional solutions of ownership, market, taxation, responsibility, and the accounting system of the joint entity.

Each prospective solution carries a distinct strategy. The ownership solution involves the allocation, by law, of control rights that individuals can bargain for. The market solution, in contrast, involves the allocation of that right through a competitive auction. Taxation requires the establishment …

Ethnography As A Diagnostic Tool In The Scientific Advisory Process, Aleksander Chrostowski, Monika Kostera

European Management Studies

Scientific consulting is a consultative approach, combining the research process and the personal involvement of the researcher, involving the introduction of changes in the functioning of the organization. In the process the client's involvement is important at all stages, and the goal is to achieve organizational learning. The durability of this type of consulting is characteristic, but at the same time it offers a valuable opportunity to foster sustainable growth of the organization. Different research methods are used in the process of scientific consulting, including the qualitative ones. This article presents the advantages of using ethnography at the diagnostic stage. …

Direct Selling Distributors As Transnational Entrepreneurs - The Case Of Amway And Mary Kay Cosmetics, Paweł Krzyworzeka May 2011

Direct Selling Distributors As Transnational Entrepreneurs - The Case Of Amway And Mary Kay Cosmetics, Paweł Krzyworzeka

European Management Studies

The aim of the article is to present concepts of transnational connections and transnational entrepreneurs as a useful analytical frame for description of actions of direct sellers engaged in a multi-level marketing. The two presented narratives - about Beata from Chicago and Piotr from Toronto - show how migrants faced with generalized uncertainty use their social capital - especially connections with people residing in the country of origin - for business purposes. For those entrepreneurs transnational business operations, apart from an economic value, are the means for strengthening family and social ties. The article is based on findings from an …

Toward An Organizationally Diverse American Capitalism? Cooperative, Mutual, And Local, State-Owned Enterprise, Marc Schneiberg May 2011

Toward An Organizationally Diverse American Capitalism? Cooperative, Mutual, And Local, State-Owned Enterprise, Marc Schneiberg

Seattle University Law Review

Discussions of economic reform focus on two strategies for tempering corporate excess and mobilizing corporations for growth and prosperity: restructuring markets via competition policies and various forms of countervailing power. Populists, Progressives, and New Dealers looked to antitrust, regulatory states, and unions as counterweights to corporations. Contemporary efforts look to not-for-profit watchdogs, NGO certification and standard setting, privatization, and corporate governance reform to upgrade markets and deflect corporations from low road paths. This essay recovers a third strategy for regulating and reforming corporate capitalism: promoting organizational diversity via the formation of parallel systems of cooperative, mutual and local, state-owned enterprises. …

Behind Closed Doors: The Influence Of Creditors In Business Reorganizations, Michelle M. Harner, Jamie Marincic May 2011

Behind Closed Doors: The Influence Of Creditors In Business Reorganizations, Michelle M. Harner, Jamie Marincic

Seattle University Law Review

General corporate law delegates the power to manage a corpora-tion to the board of directors. The board, in turn, acts as a fiduciary and generally owes its duties to the corporation and its shareholders. Many courts and commentators summarize the board’s primary objective as maximizing shareholder wealth. Accordingly, one would expect a board’s conduct to be governed largely by the interests of the corporation and its shareholders.

Yet anecdotal and increasing empirical evidence suggest that large creditors wield significant influence over their corporate debtors. Although this influence is most apparent when a corporation approaches insolvency, often the strength of the …

Income Elasticity Of Demand For Large, Modern Rapid Transit Rail Networks, Brian J. Asquith May 2011

Income Elasticity Of Demand For Large, Modern Rapid Transit Rail Networks, Brian J. Asquith

Undergraduate Economic Review

In spite of evidence to the contrary, there is a common perception inside of academia and out that rail transit is an inferior good. This paper proposes a demand model for radial subway networks utilizing the monocentric city model in order to quantify the income elasticity of demand. This model is tested against extant data from the 2000 Census, and controls for spatial variability, demographic and economic factors, and commuter costs. This paper concludes that while the factors that drive demand vary across urban areas, the results suggest that rail transit may in fact be a normal good.

New Grounds, New Challenges? Exploring Stakeholder Research In Service Design, Fabian Segelström May 2011

New Grounds, New Challenges? Exploring Stakeholder Research In Service Design, Fabian Segelström

Nordes Conference Series

This is a submission for the doctoral consortium at NorDes 2011. The research described herein focuses on how existing design tools and techniques need to be appropriated when used in a new context – in this case service design. It is argued that the nature of services poses new challenges for designers. A theoretical introduction to these challenges is given, presenting a view of service design as the intersection between the user-centred design tradition and thoughts on service from marketing and management. The specific challenges in conducting stakeholder research for service design are introduced. The research objectives of the PhD …
