This capstone paper identifies sustainability of sustainable development projects and microcredit, as well as the challenges facing these efforts. A case study was conducted on Eritrean refugees in Shagarab camp in eastern Sudan where …

First, a history of indigenous struggles in Nicaragua along with U.S. economic influence on land rights, tourism and educational systems are explored. Research On Practical Rationality: Studying The Justification Of Actions In Mathematics Teaching, Patricio Herbst, Daniel Chazan Jul 2011

Research On Practical Rationality: Studying The Justification Of Actions In Mathematics Teaching, Patricio Herbst, Daniel Chazan

The Mathematics Enthusiast

Building on our earlier work conceptualizing teaching as the management of instructional exchanges, we lay out a theory of the practical rationality of mathematics teaching—that is, a theory of the grounds upon which instructional actions specific to mathematics can be justified or rebuffed. We do that from a perspective informed by what experienced practitioners consider viable but also in ways that suggest operational avenues for the study of instructional improvement, in particular for improvements that enable students to do more authentic mathematical work. We show how different kinds of experiments can be used to engage in theory building and provide …

As it turns out, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was secretly tracking the twenty-year- old Arab-American using a Global Positioning System (GPS) affixed to the underside of his vehicle. The FBI located the student two days after the posting and demanded the …

Obama's Presidential (Mixed) Race: Framing And Ideological Analysis Of Blogs And News, Iliana Rucker

Communication ETDs

The election of Barack Obama as President of the United States brought a heightened awareness to the role of race and produced speculation about the idealized notion of the achievement of a post-racial United States. This dissertation examined mediated conversations on mixed race identity in response to some of the significant events in the Obama campaign and the first months of the Obama presidency. Specifically, this study examined the ways that newspapers and blogs construct discourses about race, mixed race, and racism. Further, I explored the biological, legal, and social implications as they relate to current constructions of mixed-race identity. …

It's Like A Giant Game Of Telephone: Physicians' Perceptions Of Effective Communication In The Emergency Department Context', Marleah Dean

Communication ETDs

Despite the growing number of emergency department visits, effective communication between patients and physicians are often overlooked because of the fast- paced nature of the emergency department (ED). As such, we do not know what is seen as effective communication within this particular context. Therefore, the goal of this study was to learn how emergency department physicians define effective communication and identify the barriers and facilitators to communicating in the ED. Seventeen semi-structured, open-ended interviews were conducted with ED physicians. Interviews were recorded and transcribed into a Word document. Data analysis included two steps—the constant comparison method (Lindlof & Taylor, …

Evolution And Culture, Athanasios Chasiotis Jul 2011

Evolution And Culture, Athanasios Chasiotis

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

The goal of cross-cultural psychology to identify and explain similarities and differences in the behavior of individuals in different cultures requires linking human behavior to its context (Cole, Meshcheryakov & Ponomariov, 2011). In order to specify this relation, the focus is usually on the sociocultural environment and how it interacts with behavior. Since cross-cultural psychology also deals with the evolutionary and biological bases of behavior, this focus on culture has regularly led to an unbalanced view (Berry, Poortinga, Breugelmans, Chasiotis & Sam, 2011). Too often, biology and culture are seen as opposites: what is labeled as cultural is not biological …

Medical Pluralism In Morocco: The Cultural, Religious, Historical And Political-Economic Determinants Of Health And Choice., Tyler Martinson Jul 2011

Medical Pluralism In Morocco: The Cultural, Religious, Historical And Political-Economic Determinants Of Health And Choice., Tyler Martinson

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Morocco is a culturally diverse intersection between the African continent, the Arab world and Europe. This multiplicity is mirrored in the country’s pluralistic medical system and beliefs surrounding the concepts of illness and health. Explanations of health are endorsed by culturally specific knowledge and are then naturalized and taken as objective. A synthesis of theoretical descriptions and political-economic of medical pluralism, along with historical analysis, explains the presence of multiple health practices and how a person’s choice of medical practice is heavily influenced by dynamic socio-cultural, religious, historical, political and economic factors. This study will help improve practitioner/client narratives of …

(Wp 2011-05) 'Til Recession Do Us Part: Booms, Busts, And Divorce In The United States, Abdur Chowdhury

Economics Working Papers

A general hypothesis regarding the impact of permanent income levels and business cycle fluctuations on divorce rate at the state level in the United States is analyzed in the paper. Using data for 45 states over the 1978-2009 sample period, the paper shows that the higher the level of transitory income, the higher is the incidence of divorce. In other words, divorce is pro-cyclical. Why do divorce decrease during recession and increase during expansion? When an economy is in crisis and people’s incomes are low, the cost of divorce will prevent a couple from divorcing irrespective of the quality of …

Learning From The Grassroots, Uzramma . Jul 2011

Learning From The Grassroots, Uzramma .

Socio-Legal Review

When I visited villages in Adilabad, I learnt that the Indian samaaj was very different from what I had learnt about Indian society through a Westernised education. I learnt that the larger part of rural Indian society is made up of closely inter-connected producer communities, who though they do not socialise with each other are professionally interdependent. My companions and I learnt about the traditions of village life from Ravindra Sharma of Kala Ashram. We found that Government interventions in local cotton textile production tended to centralize the process and to break traditional relationships among producers. We based our own …

Experiential Learning In Washington, D.C.: A Study Of Student Motivations And Expectations, Richard Holtzman Jul 2011

Experiential Learning In Washington, D.C.: A Study Of Student Motivations And Expectations, Richard Holtzman

History and Social Sciences Faculty Journal Articles

Experiential learning offers students opportunities to learn in real-world settings outside the classroom. In political science, such experiences have been found to enhance knowledge of the political process, positively impact subsequent academic performance, and develop more robust understandings of civic values. While these research findings have led colleges and universities to increasingly mandate service-learning courses, many experiential learning opportunities such as internships and study abroad programs are voluntary and demand student initiative. The purpose of this paper is to explore why students choose to engage in such voluntary experiential opportunities. The research questions guiding this project ask: Why do students …

The Relationship Between Personality Traits And Driver Job Performance : An Empirical Study Of Haulage Companies In Peninsular Malaysia., Chandra Mohan Sinnandavar

Student Works (2010-2019)

This study contributes to the understanding of truck drivers’ personality and its relationship with their job performance, which is an area of research that receives little attention in Malaysia. Industry practitioners posit that managing drivers is the hardest part in managing a transport company. This study investigates the impact of drivers’ personality on their job performance. This study utilizes the Five Factor Model of personality which is extraversion, agreeableness, emotional stability, conscientiousness and intelligence and its narrow traits in investigating the relationship between a driver’s personality and his/her job performance. Data were collected from 147 drivers of nine haulage companies, …
