Mountain Monitor-2nd Quarter 2011, Mark Muro, Kenan Fikri
Mountain Monitor Quarterly
Data through the second quarter of 2011 raise new questions about the pace and certainty of recovery in the Intermountain West. Even places like Denver, Colorado Springs, and Ogden—which only suffered mild setbacks in the early quarters of the recession—have stagnated in the wake of the nation’s worst economic slump since the Great Depression. Output and employment increased hesitantly in eight of the 10 major metros of the Intermountain West in the second quarter while the housing market slumped to new lows everywhere.

An Extension Of Life Course Theory Into The Child Welfare System, Shaun M. Gann
An Extension Of Life Course Theory Into The Child Welfare System, Shaun M. Gann
Theses and Dissertations
Over the past 20 years, Sampson and Laub's age-graded theory of informal social control, or life course theory, has become the epitome of developmental criminological theories. Life course theory is based on the premise of life trajectories that are influenced by turning points. Much research has examined possible turning points in the adult life course, such as marriage, employment, military service, and childbirth. However, few studies have attempted to determine possible turning points in the juvenile life course. In an attempt to address this lack of knowledge on juvenile turning points, this thesis presents an extension of life course theory …

Social Determinants And Dynamics Of Health Inequality In Nigeria, Hyacinth E. Ichoku, Emmanuel O. Nwosu
Social Determinants And Dynamics Of Health Inequality In Nigeria, Hyacinth E. Ichoku, Emmanuel O. Nwosu
Economic and Financial Review
This paper sheds light on the social determinants of health inequality in Nigeria by quantifying the dynamic relationship between socioeconomic indicators and child anthropomorphic outcomes. Applying multivariate regression analysis and the Blinder- Oaxaca decompositions on recent demographic and health survey [DHS] data the study shows that bad health is disproportionately concentrated on the poor and some geopolitical zones of the country. Differences in wealth account for about 58.0 per cent and 33.0 per cent of differences in child nutritional and underweight status between the poor and nonpoor. Although improving over time, these differences suggest better targeted social policy reforms in …

I Can Sit But I’D Rather Stand: Commuter’S Experience Of Crowdedness And Fellow Passenger Behaviour In Carriages On Australian Metropolitan Trains, Lily Hirsch, Kirrilly Thompson
World Transit Research
For many people in Australia, crowding is a major issue and an unavoidable aspect of their daily rail commute. Australian passenger experiences, perceptions of, and their reactions to crowding are not well understood. To gain an understanding of passenger perceptions and tolerance of railway crowding and the impact of passenger behaviour on the crowding experience, qualitative (Stage 1) and quantitative (Stage 2) fieldwork was undertaken between 2009 and 2010 across the five metropolitan railways in Australia. Some results from Stage 1, a two-part qualitative study are given. This involved ethnographic participant observations on trains in five States and 20 focus …
The Turkish Wage Curve; Evidence From The Household Labor Force Survey, Badi H. Baltagi, Yusuf Soner Baskaya, Timur Hulagu
The Turkish Wage Curve; Evidence From The Household Labor Force Survey, Badi H. Baltagi, Yusuf Soner Baskaya, Timur Hulagu
Center for Policy Research
This paper examines the Turkish wage curve using individual data from the Household Labor Force Survey (HLFS) including 26 NUTS-2 regions over the period 2005 - 2008. When the local unemployment rate is treated as predetermined, there is evidence in favor of the wage curve only for younger and female workers. However, if the lagged unemployment rate is used as an instrument for current unemployment rate, we find an unemployment elasticity of -0.099. We also find a higher elasticity for younger, less educated, low experienced workers than for older, more educated and more experienced workers. Another important finding is that …
Graham V. Florida: A Game-Changing Victory For Both Juveniles And Juvenile-Rights Advocates, Michelle Marquis
Graham V. Florida: A Game-Changing Victory For Both Juveniles And Juvenile-Rights Advocates, Michelle Marquis
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
In Graham v. Florida, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution—specifically, the Cruel and Unusual Punishment Clause of the Eighth Amendment—prohibits the imposition of a life without parole sentence on a juvenile offender who did not commit a homicide. Graham marks a significant departure from the Supreme Court’s Eighth Amendment jurisprudence because it categorically bars life sentences for juveniles who are convicted of nonhomicide crimes based on juveniles’ unique amenability to rehabilitation, rather than on the nature of the punishment itself. While Graham’s central holding is ostensibly straightforward, the decision has generated more questions than answers. Courts …

Effective Communication Of Software Development Knowledge Through Community Portals, Christoph Treude, Margaret-Anne Storey
Effective Communication Of Software Development Knowledge Through Community Portals, Christoph Treude, Margaret-Anne Storey
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Knowledge management plays an important role in many software organizations. Knowledge can be captured and distributed using a variety of media, including traditional help files and manuals, videos, technical articles, wikis, and blogs. In recent years, web-based community portals have emerged as an important mechanism for combining various communication channels. However, there is little advice on how they can be effectively deployed in a software project. In this paper, we present a first study of a community portal used by a closed source software project. Using grounded theory, we develop a model that characterizes documentation artifacts along several dimensions, such as …
Child Support As Labor Regulation, Yiyoon Chung
Child Support As Labor Regulation, Yiyoon Chung
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The development of child support policy over the past three decades provides an emblematic case study of the ways in which a new policy that reflects the rise of moral arguments about individual and family responsibility, once established, produces significant consequences for both the economic sphere and political dialogues. I use social control theory to examine a rarely appreciated consequence of child support policies: labor regulation. Particularly, I demonstrate the ways in which the discourse embedded in child support has exalted the importance of work even under the lowest terms, and has deflected public attention away from labor market issues.

Prudence And Controversy: The New York Public Library Responds To Post-War Anticommunist Pressures, Stephen Francoeur
Publications and Research
As the New York Public Library entered the post-war era in the late 1940s, its operations fell under the zealous scrutiny of self-styled ‘redhunters’ intent upon rooting out library materials and staffers deemed un-American and politically subversive. The high point of attacks upon the New York Public Library came during the years 1947-1954, a period that witnessed the Soviet atomic bomb, the Berlin airlift, and the Korean War. This article charts the narrow and carefully wrought trail blazed by the library’s leadership during that period. Through a reading of materials in the library archives, we see how political pressures were …
Representation Through Participation: A Multilevel Analysis Of Jury Deliberations, Erin York Cornwell, Valerie P. Hans
Representation Through Participation: A Multilevel Analysis Of Jury Deliberations, Erin York Cornwell, Valerie P. Hans
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
Fully participatory jury deliberations figure prominently in the idealized view of the American jury system, where balanced participation among diverse jurors leads to more accurate fact-finding and instills public confidence in the legal system. However, research more than 50 years ago indicated that jury-room interactions are shaped by social status, with upper-class men participating more than their lower-class and female counterparts. The effects of social status on juror participation have been examined only sporadically since then, and rarely with actual jurors. We utilize data from 2,189 criminal jurors serving on 302 juries in four jurisdictions to consider whether—and in what …

Fleet Arctic Operations Game, Christopher Gray, Leif Bergey, Walter A. Berbrick
Game Reports
The United States Naval War College (NWC) in Newport, Rhode Island hosted the Fleet Arctic Operations Game (FAOG) on 13-16 September 2011. The FAOG was developed and executed under the sponsorship of Commander, Second Fleet (C2F) initially and then Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces (USFF) following the integration of the two staffs. The purpose of the FAOG was to identify gaps that limit sustained maritime operations in the Arctic and recommend DOTMLPFP actions in order to inform United States Navy leadership. After reviewing the research literature, the game sponsor and NWC Wargaming Department (WGD) jointly developed three overarching objectives based on …

The Influence Of Type Of Community Organization On Service-Learning In Medical Students, Chien-Cheng Lee, Miau-Rong Lee, Li-Chuan Hsu, His-Chin Wu, Wu-Chung Shen, Cheng-Chieh Lin
Journal of Medical Education
We investigated the influence of different types of community organization on the results of service-learning in medical students. We assigned the students to provide service in four types of community organization: elderly service (ES), after-school-tutoring (AST), health education (HE), and service to indigenous Taiwanese people (ITP) in their tribal communities. After the students finished their service, their reflections on the course were collected and classified by two professional raters. The ratings were based on ten criteria developing from Chickering's psychosocial developmental theory and the main purpose of the course. The feedback reflections were also classified as negative or positive overall. …

Religiosity, Delinquency, And The Deterrent Effects Of Informal Sanctions, Andrew L. Spivak, Miyuki Fukushima, Margaret S. Kelley, Tiffany Sanford Jenson
Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications
Past research in deterrence theory suggests that informal social sanctions intervene in the effect of religiosity on criminal and delinquent behavior, such that more religious individuals tend to perceive stronger informal sanctions (Grasmick, Bursik and Cochran 1991a; Grasmick, Kinsey and Cochran 1991b). This study examines the influence of religiosity and social deterrence on college students' delinquent behavior, as measured by anticipated violation of a university's alcohol policy. Data were collected through a survey of undergraduate students (n = 484) at a large South-Midwestern public university that instituted a campus alcohol ban. The survey took place three months after the ban …

Health Worker Experiences With Environmental Pollution : Health In Urban Targeted Community : A Study Of Pollution And Clinicians' Experiences And Attitudes Towards It In Urban Low-Income Communities And Communities Of Color, Leslie B. Bosworth
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Research suggests that exposure to pollution can impact people's health, and that there are more chances for exposure in some urban low-income communities or communities of color. The purpose of the study is to explore whether social service oriented clinicians consider whether their clients are exposed to pollution, how large of a problem the believe pollution is for their clients, and what actions they and their clients have taken to protect against pollution. A second purpose is to assess whether clinicians view pollution as product of discrimination. A third purpose is to see if pollution is indeed higher in lower-income …
An Assessment Of Morro Bay Residents' Attitudes Toward And Knowledge About Tourism: Setting A Foundation For Sustainable Tourism Development, Tyson Matthew David Stockton
An Assessment Of Morro Bay Residents' Attitudes Toward And Knowledge About Tourism: Setting A Foundation For Sustainable Tourism Development, Tyson Matthew David Stockton
Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to explore Morro Bay residents’ attitudes toward tourism and knowledge about tourism in the three major tourism impact categories (economic, socio-cultural, and environmental). A mail-back questionnaire was hand-delivered during the winter of 2011 to 720 Morro Bay residents. In general, Morro Bay residents had slightly positive attitudes toward tourism in their community. The mean attitude score was 3.27 on a 5-point Likert type scale. The subjects had a relatively low level of tourism knowledge. The mean total indirect tourism knowledge score was 2.98 on a 5-point Likert-type scale. Residents’ total direct tourism knowledge score …
