"Beowulf: The Monsters And The Critics" Seventy-Five Years Later, Michael D.C. Drout

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Scholar Guest of Honor speech, Mythcon 42. A discussion of the continuing influence of Tolkien’s famed Beowulf essay on its seventy-fifth anniversary. Shows how the essay both opened up and limited later Beowulf scholarship, and draws some interesting parallels with the current state of Tolkien scholarship. Along the way, questions the wisdom of believing everything an author says about his own work, and asserts the value of familiarity with critical history.

Graduate Student Perceptions Of An Effective Online Class, Steve M. Bounds

Administrative Issues Journal

Online learning is a growing trend within the higher education community. As more universities offer more graduate programs totally online for the convenience of the older student who often has a family and full-time job it is imperative that instructors give attention to what students believe constitutes an effective online class. This paper surveyed 36 graduate students to determine what they considered important in an online course. Students want a professor who uses multimedia effectively, who establishes social interaction among students, who has a well-designed online format, who has an online presence, and who is available to students.

Anomalies In The System: Is A New Educational Paradigm Upon Us?, Ed Cunliff, John Barthell Oct 2011

Anomalies In The System: Is A New Educational Paradigm Upon Us?, Ed Cunliff, John Barthell

Administrative Issues Journal

In this article, we describe the palpable changes of a paradigm shift in higher education. Although this shift has been described and/or predicted elsewhere, we affirm the transition from over 30 years of collective teaching and administrative experience at a predominantly undergraduate institution (PUI) with historical roots as a state normal school. In many respects, the anomalies that Thomas Kuhn predicted in such a transition are all the more evident given our institution’s history. These anomalies include (but are not limited to) 1) the state of knowledge “ownership” (as mediated by the internet), 2) student-centered (vs. faculty-centered) educational practices, 3) …

What's In A Name? Transnational Corporations As Bystanders Under International Law, Jena Martin Amerson Oct 2011

What's In A Name? Transnational Corporations As Bystanders Under International Law, Jena Martin Amerson

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

By giving TNCs the “bystander” name, this Article attempts to take the rhetoric out of its sound-bite environment and examine it for what it is: a strategy with implications for corporate accountability. This Article attempts to distinguish the “bystander” label that TNCs employ, which conveys the idea of the innocent bystander, and the name of the bystander that this Article would like to adopt, which contemplates a party that is complicit to the underlying action even when it is inactive. The term “rhetoric” employed throughout this Article is used as a more generic term for discussions of TNCs within …

Gangs Of New York Are Terrorists? The Misapplication Of The New York Antiterrorism Statute Due To The Lack Of Comprehensive Gang Legislation, Chantal Tortoroli

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

Part I of this Note details the background of the New York antiterrorism statute. It explains the relevant legislative history, as well as the structure and wording of the statute. An Exploration Of Human Resource Management Information Systems Security, Humayun Zafar, Jan Guynes Clark, Myung S. Ko

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

In this exploratory study we investigate differences in perception between management and staff with regard to overall information security risk management and human resources security risk management at two Fortune 500 companies. This study is part of a much larger study with regard to organizational information security issues. Decolonizing Nationalism: Reading Nkrumah And Nyerere’S Pan-African Epistemology, Jesse Benjamin Oct 2011

Decolonizing Nationalism: Reading Nkrumah And Nyerere’S Pan-African Epistemology, Jesse Benjamin

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

Using the perspective of intellectual history, this essay explores the lives and philosophies of Julius K. Nyerere and Kwame Nkrumah, heads of state in Tanzania and Ghana, respectively, as well as philosophers, activists, and Pan-African leaders throughout their lifetimes. The central focus is on their concepts and practices of nationalism, and their attempts to transcend the confines of colonial, Western epistemologies in formulating new African social practices. Their concepts of African socialism, pan-Africanism, and neo-colonialism are examined closely. Their lived experiences with injustice in Africa and the Black Atlantic shaped their perspectives. Their unfinished work bequeathed to us tools for …

Overview Of Literature Relevant To Information And Communication Technology Based Healthcare Design In Rural China, Jiehui Jiang, Prabhu Kandachar, Adinda Freudenthal

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

ICT healthcare design in rural China is a special topic in product development, and various outputs about ICT, healthcare and rural China from literature are relevant to it. In this paper the author reviews those publications and defines three domains: Design for Base of the Pyramid, User Centered Design and ICT healthcare design. After studying these papers, the author founds out that none of exiting design models can be directly adapted into ICT healthcare design in rural China because some knowledge gaps have not been bridged yet now. As a discussion, the author proposes three investigation areas for the future …

Globalization And International R&D Flows Into Emerging Markets: Nomothetic Evidence, Abdullah M. Khan, Ashok K. Roy, Rajaram Veliyath Oct 2011

Globalization And International R&D Flows Into Emerging Markets: Nomothetic Evidence, Abdullah M. Khan, Ashok K. Roy, Rajaram Veliyath

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

In this paper we analyze the impact of some determinants of international R&D expenditures made by overseas affiliates of MNCs. We also examine whether globalization has expedited international R&D investment flows since 1995, the year that internet access was opened up to mass usage and trade barriers began to concertedly decrease worldwide, following the emergence of the World Trade Organization (WTO). We find evidence that ethnic diversity, political stability, and patent rights enforcement promotes international flows of R&D investments. Increased workers’ educational levels appear to have contradicting effects on international R&D investment flows. When we isolated the effects of globalization …
