State Agency Promising Practice: New Hampshire - Translating Research Into A Position Statement About Integrated Employment, Jennifer Bose, Thinkwork! At The Institute For Community Inclusion At Umass Boston

ThinkWork! Publications

New Hampshire’s Bureau of Developmental Services, Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, other state and local service providers, advocates, and families are committed to increasing the employment rate and the quality of employment outcomes for people with developmental disabilities. These stakeholders met to craft an employment position statement. They framed their discussions according to factors that research has found to be common to “high-performing” states in providing integrated employment opportunities. Then they developed an employment position statement that satisfied all the groups involved, and communicated their shared belief in the importance of integrated employment as a means toward community inclusion.

Listening For The Unconscious : An Exploration Of Lacanian Clinical Perspectives Applied To Social Work Practice, Katharine Barbey Thomas

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study explores clinical perspectives based on the work of Parisian psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan (1901-1981) applied to social work practice. Through in-depth interviews with five Lacanian clinicians residing in North America, this study asks what the unconscious as a clinical reality offers social workers in incorporating and listening for yet another dimension of human experience. The findings from the interviews will contribute to a critical reflection on social work's core values outlined in the code of ethics under the headings of "service," "social justice," "dignity and worth of the person," and "the importance of human relationships". In turn, this …

Dynamic Measurement Of Soluble Human Aβ In A Combined Microdialysis-Experimental Traumatic Brain Injury Mouse Model, Katherine Schwetye Jan 2011

Dynamic Measurement Of Soluble Human Aβ In A Combined Microdialysis-Experimental Traumatic Brain Injury Mouse Model, Katherine Schwetye

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The amyloid-β peptide: Aβ) plays a central pathophysiological role in Alzheimer's disease, but little is known about its dynamics in the brain's extracellular space. A recent microdialysis-based study in human patients with severe brain injuries found that extracellular Aβ dynamics correlate with changes in neurological status. Because neurological status is generally diminished following injury, this correlation suggests that extracellular Aβ is reduced relative to baseline. However, human studies cannot assess pre-injury Aβ levels, very early post-injury Aβ levels, nor the relationship between extracellular Aβ and total tissue levels. Therefore, we developed a mouse model that combines experimental TBI with microdialysis …

Measuring A Community-Based Mental Health Organization’S Culture And Climate Scores Stability, David A. Patterson Silver Wolf (Adelv Unegv Waya) Phd, Eugene Maguin Phd, Catherine N. Dulmus Phd, Bruce C. Nisbet

Brown School Faculty Publications

This project builds on the work of Glisson et al., (2008) and the knowledge learned from community-based mental health organization’s internal structures (e.g., culture and climate), which possibly impede the implantation and adoption of new technologies. The Organizational Social Context (OSC) Model measurement system is guided by a model of social context that composes both organizational and individual level constructs, including individual and shared perceptions that are believed to mediate the impact of the organization on the individual. Although the OSC has been developed and validated over time, the literature does not provide guidance on test-retest reliability of the scale.

Disabilities Through The Capability Approach Lens: Implications For Public Policies Handicap Au Travers De L’Approche Par Les Capabilités: Quelles Implications Pour Les Politiques Publiques ?, Jean-Francois Trani, Parul Bakhshi, Nicol Bellanca, Mario Biggeri, Francesca Marchetta

Brown School Faculty Publications

This paper explores the contribution of the capability approach of Amartya Sen and other authors to policy making in the specific case of disability policy. After reviewing existing models, their translation into action and their limitations in this regard, the paper introduces a new policy framework based on the capability approach. In particular, we introduce a new measure of functionings and capabilities. We investigate ways of measuring the gap between functionings, what people are able to do and be, and capabilities – the valuable practical opportunities people have and choose from. The possibility of the elaboration of such a disability …

Department Chairs' Perceptions Of Part-Time Faculty Status In Maryland Public And Private Higher Education Institutions, Daniel L. Moorehead Jan 2011

Department Chairs' Perceptions Of Part-Time Faculty Status In Maryland Public And Private Higher Education Institutions, Daniel L. Moorehead

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The growing use of part-time, non-tenure track faculty in higher education has become a nationwide phenomenon. The college-teaching part-time instructor is one who is working for low pay, has little job security, and has few benefits. College part-time instructors' employment is in a contingent state. They do not have the job protection provided to tenured professors because they are usually hired for only the upcoming term with no guarantee of being hired for any future terms.;The purpose of this study was to describe the status of part-time faculty in Maryland public and private four-year colleges and universities as perceived by …

Fathers' Perceptions Regarding Parenting And Discipline Based On Community Norms And Practices, Anna Marie Yelick Jan 2011

Fathers' Perceptions Regarding Parenting And Discipline Based On Community Norms And Practices, Anna Marie Yelick

Wayne State University Theses

Determining fathers' perceptions of community norms on discipline is paramount to understanding how to develop social work interventions that target fathers' parenting behaviors. Understanding why a father engages in one form of discipline over another in child rearing and understanding how fathers view their parenting role is important when discussing implementation of parenting programs. This study was conducted using qualitative focus groups comprised of men ranging from late adolescents to mid-adulthood. The majority of the men were lower economic status, African American fathers recruited from a human services agency in Detroit. One-hour long, semi-structured focus group discussions were content coded, …

Despite positive outcomes for individual consumers, barriers to program implementation emerged as thematic problems for organizations running the program. The study provides recommendations that may increase the …

Thinking About Peace, Conflict, And War: An Introduction To The Special Issue, Sondra J. Fogel, Daniel Liechty Jan 2011

Thinking About Peace, Conflict, And War: An Introduction To The Special Issue, Sondra J. Fogel, Daniel Liechty

Social Work Faculty Publications

This special issue had humble beginnings. As a matter of fact, odds were stacked against it, especially given that the original plan for this topic was for a panel discussion based on submitted work to the 2009 Society for the Study of Social Problems (SSSP) Conference. However, not one abstract was received for this topic. I found this quite curious and alarming since at that time this country was engaged in two wars, there was continuous media coverage around "terrorist" activities, and we were experiencing frequent changes to our daily routines based on new security measures. Anti-war protestors were growing …

Child Neglect And Its Association With Subsequent Juvenile Drug And Alcohol Offense, Ken Corvo, Wan-Yi Chen, Ellen Delara, Jennifer Propp

Social Work - All Scholarship

This study presents empirical findings about the association between childhood neglect and adolescents’ subsequent involvement with drug and alcohol related offense from a sample of 251 neglected children and their community matched control (N = 502) from a 17-year period longitudinal data set. Findings confirmed that neglected children were at greater risk to be arrested for later juvenile drug and alcohol offenses than non-neglected children. Being male, White and the presence of domestic violence also significantly contributed to elevated risks of being arrested for juvenile drug and alcohol violations for neglected children. Implications for practice and future research are discussed.

Class And Gender In The Phillippines: Ethnographic Interviews With Female Employer-Female Domestic Dyads, Emelda Tabao Driscoll

Sociology - Dissertations

This study is an ethnographic analysis of the relationship between female employers and female domestics in the Philippines focusing on how it maintains and reproduces the intersecting class and gender relations of power that brought the two women together. It also explores relationality - how the privileging of one group of women is related to the exploitation of another.

Data for analysis was based on interviews with 25 female employer-female domestic dyads in a city in the Philippines in 1989. The questions for the semi-structured interviews were focused on four major research questions:1.) What kinds of female employer-female domestic relationship …
