A Comparative Analysis Of Genocidal Rape In Rwanda And The Former Yugoslavia: Implications For The Future, Jessica Kruger Jan 2011

A Comparative Analysis Of Genocidal Rape In Rwanda And The Former Yugoslavia: Implications For The Future, Jessica Kruger

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This work examines the genocidal rape policies that occurred in the Rwandan and former Yugoslavian conflicts. Traditionally, rape has been considered an unfortunate yet inescapable consequence of war. In the early 1990s, the Hutu and Serbian regimes developed a new tactic and utilized rape as a genocidal weapon. Following a comparative analysis framework, the present study will examine the similarities and differences of the genocidal rape in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia. Five points of comparison were established: perpetrators, victims, global economics, social disorder, and militias. Results of this analysis show that Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia possessed common pre-genocidal …

Over nineteen million immigrant women live in the United States. Each one of those nineteen million women carries with her a powerful history. Immigrant Women Organize for Justice: A Listening Project is an attempt to capture a breath of those histories, in particular the histories of four mujeres luchadoras: immigrant women who are organizing communities surrounding them and devoting much of their life and their work to the lucha (struggle or fight) for a more just and equal society. Immigrant Women Organize for Justice: A Listening Project is a two-part project. The first section is devoted entirely to remembering the …

Relationship Between Graduate Students' Statistics Self-Efficacy, Statistics Anxiety, Attitude Toward Statistics, And Social Support, Michelle Perepiczka, Nichelle Chandler, Michael Becerra

Walden Faculty and Staff Publications

Statistics plays an integral role in graduate programs. However, numerous intra- and interpersonal factors may lead to successful completion of needed coursework in this area. The authors examined the extent of the relationship between self-efficacy to learn statistics and statistics anxiety, attitude towards statistics, and social support of 166 graduate students enrolled in master’s and doctoral programs within colleges of education. Results indicated that statistics anxiety and attitude towards statistics were statistically significant predictors of self-efficacy to learn statistics, yet social support was not a statistically significant predictor of self-efficacy. Insight into how this population responds to statistics courses and …

School of Leadership and Education Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

This paper examines the internationalization experiences of four school counseling faculty members in a counseling program at a Catholic university. Counseling in general and counseling schools have become a global profession. As a result, it is imperative for training programs to develop graduates who are culturally competent across the globe. This reflective piece outlines the steps a Catholic university’s school counseling specialization has taken to internationalize its program and curriculum. Participants engaged in a community of practice to investigate thoroughly the current status of their program and curriculum. Findings highlight strengths and challenges associated with internationalization and the integration of …

Understanding The Effects Of Diversity In Mission From A Social Science Perspective, David R. Dunaetz Jan 2011

Understanding The Effects Of Diversity In Mission From A Social Science Perspective, David R. Dunaetz

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

This study presents an overview of the results of empirical studies concerning diversity in work teams. Although these studies have most often been carried out in secular contexts, they support perspectives of human nature that are consistent with the biblical themes found associated with the Tower of Babel (the Similarity/Attraction Perspective) and Paul's metaphor of the Body of Christ and spiritual gifts (the Information/Decision Making Perspective). Key concepts are explained, including the measurement of diversity and team performance, task and relationship diversity, faultlines, cultural versus non-cultural diversity, and status. When the results of the various diversity studies are combined, it …

The Poetics Of Professionalism Among Dialysis Technicians, Laura L. Ellingson Jan 2011

The Poetics Of Professionalism Among Dialysis Technicians, Laura L. Ellingson

Gender and Sexuality Studies

The vast majority of care for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients is provided by skilled (but not formally educated) paraprofessional technicians. Using Goffman's (1959) framing of the performance of self in everyday discourse, this study examines discourse from dialysis technicians and technical aides to explore these paraprofessionals' construction and performance of professional identity and professional communication within the context of an outpatient dialysis clinic. Themes of professionalism—individualized care, vigilance, teamwork, and emotion management—are illustrated via poetic transcription of interviews with technicians. I contend that such representation offers validity equal to that of traditional research accounts while embodying alternative representational strengths.

The life of a two- or three-year-old is exciting, busy, and very demanding. Two-year-olds have grown to be very independent, using favorite words such as “Mine,” “No,” and “I do it!” as they strive for autonomy. When caring for a two- or three-year-old, enthusiasm, patience, and a sense of humor are most important. This is a time when just exploring can look more like trouble-making to an adult. Fair rules …

Three-, four-, and five-years-olds are active, imaginative, and eager to engage in the world around them. They are building skills and becoming more confident. As you help the 3- to 5-year-old child become more imaginative and confident, here are a few developmental milestones to consider.

The Perceived Impact Of Geographically Dispersed Work Teams On Job Attitudes, Nathan Hickman, Adrian B. Popa Jan 2011

The Perceived Impact Of Geographically Dispersed Work Teams On Job Attitudes, Nathan Hickman, Adrian B. Popa

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

With the increase in technology and pace of communication in a global business economy, organizations are adopting geographically dispersed business models that leverage a series of scaled work arrangements designed to enhance efficiency and cost-effectiveness. These arrangements include work teams that consist of agents who work in a traditional office but also employees who work from a home or satellite office. This qualitative study investigated perceived impact of geographic proximity to the office on job attitudes. Communication theory informed the framework of this ethnographic study and qualitative interviews. Results indicated that members of a dispersed team adopt a broad definition …

On-Campus Vs. Online Course Delivery: An Empirical Look At Both Approaches In A Controlled Setting For Introductory Managerial Accounting, Win G. Jordan, Amanda Brown Jan 2011

On-Campus Vs. Online Course Delivery: An Empirical Look At Both Approaches In A Controlled Setting For Introductory Managerial Accounting, Win G. Jordan, Amanda Brown

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

There continues to be much discussion about whether or not students learn as much in an online course as they do in an on-campus face-to-face setting. This paper presents empirical observations about four sections of introductory managerial accounting, two taught on-campus and two taught online. The on-campus face-to-face approach provided the same course content available in the online approach but also used classroom lectures and discussions. A comprehensive final exam covering all learning objectives of the course was used as the overall measure of content learning. The hypothesis was that content learning was not equal in the two groups, but …

Assessing Human Immunodeficiency Virus Testing Attitudes Among African Immigrants, Hazel Namona Nachembe Jan 2011

Assessing Human Immunodeficiency Virus Testing Attitudes Among African Immigrants, Hazel Namona Nachembe

Theses Digitization Project

This study attempted to assess and explore the attitudes of African immigrants towards HIV testing and seeking HIV services in the U.S. The pool of HIV/AIDS cases among blacks at risk in the United States does not clearly distinguish between African Americans and Black African immigrants in regard to attitudes on HIV testing. A closer exploration of African immigrants as specific black sub-groups within the larger group of blacks or African Americans infected with HIV may help distinguish and explain the increase in incidents and high risk behaviors among blacks.
