An Art-Based Psychoeducational Group For Pregnant Teenagers, Lauren Burinsky
An Art-Based Psychoeducational Group For Pregnant Teenagers, Lauren Burinsky
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
This thesis began as an art-based psychoeducational group for pregnant teenagers, and two out of ten sessions were completed. However, due to several limitations, the study had to be turned into a proposal for the group. The goal of the proposed group is to increase pregnant teenagers’ preparedness (as measured by both knowledge base and competence) for the rest of their pregnancy and for motherhood. Over the course of five weeks, six girls would participate in ten sessions. This group will be hosted at Healthy Families in Hampton, Virginia, and the participants will be members there. The first part of …

Supervision Competencies For Counselor Education Doctoral Graduates: A Delphi Study, Anita Ann Neuer
Supervision Competencies For Counselor Education Doctoral Graduates: A Delphi Study, Anita Ann Neuer
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
Counselor educators and supervisors are familiar with the use of competencies for training future clinicians but the extant literature lacks a set of competencies for use in training future counselor supervisors. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a list of supervision competencies experts agree should be demonstrated by new doctoral counseling graduates for their work with master's students, pre-licensed or licensed counselors, and doctoral students. The research design included two expert panels, an amended Delphi poll, and a content validity assessment. These procedures resulted in a consensus list of 33 supervision competencies that appear to be …
Attitudes Of Counselors Regarding Ethical Situations Encountered By In-Home Counselors, Justin Douglas Lauka
Attitudes Of Counselors Regarding Ethical Situations Encountered By In-Home Counselors, Justin Douglas Lauka
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
This survey study explored the attitudes of in-home and outpatient counselors in Virginia regarding ethical situations encountered by in-home counselors. Differences in responses were examined across several variables to identify any relationships among those constructs that are salient to in-home counseling and ethics. Of 108 participants, no significant differences were found between the two groups. One variable was found to predict counselors' responses: the percent counselors provide counseling services compared to case management. The item seen as most ethical involved telling a client to apply for needed services, surprising, given its directive nature that runs counter to the counseling profession. …

Objective: To develop and begin to evaluate a new measure of the centrality of pain in patients' lives.
Design: Cross-sectional survey and cognitive interviews.
Setting: Academic general internal medicine clinic.
Patients: 65 adult internal medicine patients with chronic non-malignant pain (CNMP).
Outcome measures: We assessed content validity and clarity of the 10-item Centrality of Pain Scale (COPS) by soliciting feedback from chronic pain experts and by conducting cognitive interviews with patients with CNMP. We assessed internal consistency reliability using Cronbach's alpha. We assessed construct validity by comparing the COPS with other measures of chronic pain …
Living For Two: Experiencing Alzheimer’S Disease Through The Caregiver, Jacob Kramer
Living For Two: Experiencing Alzheimer’S Disease Through The Caregiver, Jacob Kramer
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
This investigation focuses on the effects of Alzheimer‟s disease beyond the consequences it implicates for the patient. It must be recognized that this is a disease whose repercussions affect the family caregiver of the diseased with the same strength that it disturbs the principal carrier. The sporadic characteristics of Alzheimer‟s disease, externalized through mood swings, memory loss, the eventual loss of bodily functions, and, among other symptoms, the inability to communicate, create a category of instability and volatility experienced solely by the primary caregiver. This inconsistency that the primary family caregiver comes to know not only disturbs the patient-caregiver relationship, …

Homelessness: A New Culture Of Poverty In The Streets Of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Lindsay Lanteri
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Successes And Shortcomings Of Participatory Slum-Upgrading In Villa 31, Jacob Perten
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
In Villa 31, an urban shantytown in the heart of Buenos Aires, a team of technical professionals and community members are working together on a slum-upgrading project. Through a participatory approach, in which community members are involved in all aspects of the upgrading process, this project seeks to better overall conditions through infrastructural and structural improvements. This study investigates the participatory process used in the upgrading of Villa 31, and using theoretical best practices as a basis of comparison, underscores key achievements and limitations of the current project. Based on chosen shortcomings, the final section makes recommendations to maximize participatory …
Faces Of Angels: Photography As A Fundraising Tool For Aids-Affected Children In The Kibera Slums, Sandhira Wijayaratne
Faces Of Angels: Photography As A Fundraising Tool For Aids-Affected Children In The Kibera Slums, Sandhira Wijayaratne
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The AIDS epidemic that has plagued sub-Saharan Africa for the last few decades has produced a growing population of children that have been detrimentally affected by the consequences of the disease—death of parents, declining household income, poor education, hunger, and stigma. These effects are heightened in urban slums like Kibera, where poverty, disease, and other problems run rampant. Experts concur that the best way to address the needs of AIDS-affected children is through community-based organizations on-site that work to reduce the risks faced specifically by these kids. Angels of Hope Kibera is one such institution, providing early childhood education, a …
Assertiveness Training: Reducing Burnout And Job Turnover In Newly Graduated Nurses, Jeanine M. Conner
Assertiveness Training: Reducing Burnout And Job Turnover In Newly Graduated Nurses, Jeanine M. Conner
Theses and Dissertations
Newly graduated nurses (NGNs) face a number of challenges during the first year of practice placing them at higher risk for burnout and job turnover. Because burnout has such serious implications for the nursing profession, a comprehensive review of the literature was completed focusing on the question: does participation in an assertiveness training program decrease the rate of burnout and job turnover for newly graduated nurses
Evidence shows that assertiveness is associated with increased job satisfaction, effective coping, autonomy, and nurse empowerment. Since these characteristics are significant factors in decreasing burnout and job turnover, the findings suggest that strategies to …

The following is a proposal for a research study investigating the level hope in typically developing youth siblings of children with autism. Having a sibling with ASD has a unique impact on a child’s development and could potentially be seen as a risk factor. Literature on the nature of adjustment in this population is reviewed. Previous research has shown that hope is a construct that can be identified in young children and has lead to beneficial outcomes …
Medicare's Bundling Pilot: Including Post-Acute Care Services, Laura A. Dummit
Medicare's Bundling Pilot: Including Post-Acute Care Services, Laura A. Dummit
National Health Policy Forum
Fee-for-service Medicare, in which a separate payment is made for each service, rewards health care providers for delivering more services, but not necessarily coordinating those services over time or across settings. To help address these concerns, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 requires Medicare to experiment with making a bundled payment for a hospitalization plus post-acute care, that is, the recuperative or rehabilitative care following a hospital discharge. This bundled payment approach is intended to promote more efficient care across the acute/post-acute episode because the entity that receives the payment has financial incentives to keep episode costs …

Determinants Of Clergy Behaviors Promoting Safety Of Battered Korean Immigrant Women, Yoon Joon Choi
Determinants Of Clergy Behaviors Promoting Safety Of Battered Korean Immigrant Women, Yoon Joon Choi
Theses and Dissertations
Studies have shown that not only are clergy members the first persons from whom battered women seek help, but also a great number of clergy counsel battered women every year (Martin, 1989; Rotunda, Williamson, & Penfold, 2004). The role of the church and clergy are especially critical for the Korean immigrant community in the U.S. because Korean immigrants greatly underutilize existing services and rely heavily on their respective churches for assistance with various issues, including domestic violence (Boodman, 2007; Kim, 1997). Korean churches and clergy members have the potential to be active partners in providing intervention services and to serve …
Development Of Bicultural Competence, Jessica L. Scheunemann
Development Of Bicultural Competence, Jessica L. Scheunemann
Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology Research Exchange Conference
This inquiry looks at factors facilitating the development of bicultural competnece in internationally-adopted youth in America. Bicultural competence is the extnesion of ethnic identity defined as having knowledge of language, lifestyle characteristics, and patterns if interpersonal behavior of two cultural groups. Being competent in two cultures is an extremely difficult task for youth, largely impacted by socialization and parent mediation. Major factors discussed include: parent characteristics/styles/access to resources, youth/parental exploration of ethnicity, bicultural stress, and youth perceptions. Bicultural competnece leads to many benefits and is an important topic for counselors to understand and continually educate themselves on!

Research Exchange. Reactive Attachment Disorder: Developing A Developmental Perspective, Johnathan M. Sumpter
Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology Research Exchange Conference
Reactive Attachment Disorder is a relatively young disorder. Researchers are just beginning to hash out the implications of this disorder on current children and future generations. However, there is much needed from criteria setting and researching leadership to mediate the process of gaining ground in assessing and treating this disorder. This meta-‐analysis will provide an overview that will point out the diagnostic ambiguities, theoretical conflicts, and disjointed research of the previous decade’s work on RAD.
