Full, Conscious, And Active Participation: The Laity As Ecclesial Subjects In An Ecclesiology Informed By Bernard Lonergan, Mary Utzerath
Full, Conscious, And Active Participation: The Laity As Ecclesial Subjects In An Ecclesiology Informed By Bernard Lonergan, Mary Utzerath
Dissertations (1934 -)
Unresolved problems and tensions regarding the status and role of the laity persist nearly a half-century following Vatican II. While the magisterium focuses on issues related to the appropriateness or ability of lay persons to carry out roles in the Church that have traditionally belonged to the ordained, sociological surveys indicate that the experience of lay members of the Church in the United States and in much of the Western world includes inadequate formation, confused Catholic identity, marginalization, low levels of commitment in young Catholics, and the steady exodus of Catholics. These problems of the laity are symptomatic of problems …
Intersex And Imago: Sex, Gender, And Sexuality In Postmodern Theological Anthropology, Megan K. Defranza
Intersex And Imago: Sex, Gender, And Sexuality In Postmodern Theological Anthropology, Megan K. Defranza
Dissertations (1934 -)
Christian theologians regularly assume a binary model of human sex differentiation based on the creation narratives found in Genesis. Recent work in theological anthropology has grounded theological concepts such as the social view of the image of God, human personhood, and human relationality on the creation of humans as male and female in heterosexual marital relation. While these anthropologies have merit--particularly in correcting older versions of the imago Dei which privileged the male-- they are inadequate for addressing the phenomena of intersex.
Intersex is a broad term used for persons whose bodies display some physical characteristics of both sexes--historically labeled …

The Assumption Of All Humanity In Saint Hilary Of Poitiers' Tractatus Super Psalmos, Ellen Scully
The Assumption Of All Humanity In Saint Hilary Of Poitiers' Tractatus Super Psalmos, Ellen Scully
Dissertations (1934 -)
In this dissertation, I focus on the soteriological understanding of the fourth-century theologian Hilary of Poitiers as manifested in his underappreciated Tractatus super Psalmos. Hilary offers an understanding of salvation in which Christ saves humanity by assuming every single person into his body in the incarnation. My dissertation contributes to scholarship on Hilary in two ways.
First, I demonstrate that Hilary's teaching concerning Christ's assumption of all humanity is a unique development of Latin sources. Because of his understanding of Christ's assumption of all humanity, Hilary, along with several Greek fathers, has been accused of heterodoxy resulting from Greek Platonic …

In The Kingdom Of Men: Love, Faith And Spirituality In Von Trier's Breaking The Waves, Ingrid Fernandez
In The Kingdom Of Men: Love, Faith And Spirituality In Von Trier's Breaking The Waves, Ingrid Fernandez
Journal of Religion & Film
Rehabilitating Lars von Trier: The power of von Trier’s Breaking the Waves lies exactly in its irreducibility to a fixed interpretation. The director reconceptualizes the themes of spiritual devotion, faith and love in an unorthodox tale of the human struggle to find meaning and purpose in the world. The character of Bess allows us to penetrate into the innermost regions of the mind and affirms a humanistic approach to our relationship to ourselves and others. Von Trier places an individual’s actions as a form of development, a gesture towards transcendence that nonetheless exists within the mixture of banality and profundity …
The Relationship Of The Battles In Zechariah 12 Through 14, Joshua Andrew Haley
The Relationship Of The Battles In Zechariah 12 Through 14, Joshua Andrew Haley
Masters Theses
The relationship of the battle sequences in Zechariah 12-14 has divided scholars for centuries. Jerusalem, besieged by the nations, will be the location of both battles. The nations will be defeated by a divine plague in both battles. Finally, the battles will both result in the establishment of Yahweh's kingdom. There are several important differences between the battle sequences. Zechariah 14 specifically identifies the day of the conflict as the "Day of the Lord." Chapters 12-13 do not. Chapter 14 describes the judgment of Jerusalem while chapters 12-13 do not. Finally, chapter 14 presents a thorough description of the battle …

Like The Roar Of A Thousand Thunders: Instrumental Music And Creativity In Tibetan Buddhist Ritual, Eben Yonnetti
Like The Roar Of A Thousand Thunders: Instrumental Music And Creativity In Tibetan Buddhist Ritual, Eben Yonnetti
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Tibetan Buddhism has numerous detailed and diverse traditions of ritual music that play an integral part in religious practices. Despite the prominence of such performances in Tibetan Buddhist life, spectators and researchers alike have frequently misunderstood them based purely on physical observation. As a religion that focuses on the cultivation and development of the mind, any analysis focusing only on physical description is significantly flawed. Music in Buddhist practice is at a base level a sound offering. On a higher level, however, it is much more. If done with the proper motivation, musical performance during ritual is a method to …

Internet Usage And Religious Authority: A Case Study Of The Catholic Church Of South Korea, Youngho Park
Institute for the Humanities Theses
This study examines what impact the Internet usage by church members has on religious authority, focusing on a case study of the Korean Catholic Church. The goals of this study are to investigate the ways in which church members use the Internet for communication in the Church, to examine whether and how the Internet usage by church members affects religious authority, and to identify what kind of religious authority is affected. This study encompasses two main parts: historical background of the Church's Internet usage and analysis of the online forums about "The Four Major Rivers Project". The latter is divided …

Objectifying Men: Gulliver’S Travels, Fantomina, And The Dildo In Eighteenth-Century Literature, Andrea K. Gill
Objectifying Men: Gulliver’S Travels, Fantomina, And The Dildo In Eighteenth-Century Literature, Andrea K. Gill
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
Eighteenth-century literature is saturated with satires on the human body, especially the female body. This is most notable in the writings of men such as Jonathan Swift, Rochester (John Wilmot), and Samuel Pepys in which the authors depict the female body as being unclean and, in some cases, ugly or disproportionate. Women’s bodies were often objectified sexually as if currency and were used as social exchanges between men. Most notably, this occurs between the characters of The Country Wife. When the dildo was introduced to eighteenth-century England, women were able to take their sexuality into their own hands, literally, …
Next Year In Jerusalem: Constructions Of Israeli Nationalism In High Holiday Rituals, Amelia Caron
Next Year In Jerusalem: Constructions Of Israeli Nationalism In High Holiday Rituals, Amelia Caron
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
This article explores the intersection of nationalism and Jewish identity maintenance with High Holiday celebrations carried out in the Diaspora. Using directed interviews and participant observation, I took part in the rituals of Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) and Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) to uncover the way that American Jews and Israelis living in the Jewish Diaspora create and sustain a dialogue with their “traditional” homeland, Israel. However, the connections between Jews and this homeland have shifted dramatically in recent times. Although Israel encourages all persons of Jewish descent to immigrate to the Holy Land, a complex …
