The Importance Of Early Counseling And Education Of Persons Diagnosed With Alzheimer's Disease And Their Caregivers, Haley Pottorff Basnett Jul 2011

The Importance Of Early Counseling And Education Of Persons Diagnosed With Alzheimer's Disease And Their Caregivers, Haley Pottorff Basnett

Research Papers

When people are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, they go through periods of depression simply because the prognosis is eventual and certain death. By the same token, many healthcare professionals and insurance companies with whom individuals and their families must deal take an often cold approach to the diagnosis, considering counseling as a waste of time for a situation in which a physical prognosis is hopeless. In treating the physical aspect of the disease, many doctors do in fact prescribe an antidepressant, which ironically, will exacerbate the physical condition of the person affected, hastening the physical decline. Therefore, while the ultimate tragedy …

The Role Of Religion And Spirituality In Counseling, Tiffany Nickles Jun 2011

The Role Of Religion And Spirituality In Counseling, Tiffany Nickles

Psychology and Child Development

While the 20th century has simultaneously brought about a growth in counseling and a reemergence of secularism, counseling in the 21st century has focused its attention on interventions that are sensitive to multicultural facets in clients’ lives. As professionals increasingly embrace multicultural competency in counseling and therapy, religion and spirituality arguably stand out as cultural and personal factors that are a salient part of framing one’s experiences, beliefs, values, behavior, and illness patterns. Despite the growing understanding of the pervasiveness and importance of spirituality and religion, most psychologists have little training in dealing with religious and spiritual issues. …

The creators of our constitution believed that all men are endowed with certain unalienable rights, one of which being the Pursuit of Happiness. We all measure happiness in our own lives differently, and many of us find happiness in what we do each day. President Theodore Roosevelt once said “Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” Everyone should have the privilege of serving a purpose within their society, however, people with …

Weightism: Can Personality Characteristics Predict Prejudice In College Students?, John E. Damm May 2011

Weightism: Can Personality Characteristics Predict Prejudice In College Students?, John E. Damm

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Bias toward individuals who are obese is one of the last bastions of permissible prejudice. The people who are obese report discrimination in a variety of settings; they experience it with families, employers, teachers, and health-care professionals. Research regarding obesity bias indicates that attribution of personal responsibility is correlated with negative attitudes toward individuals who are obese. Attribution of causality and resulting bias has been linked to specific personality characteristics, specifically the Big Five traits Agreeableness and Openness to Experience. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between personality characteristics and obesity bias. Students at a large …

Job Burnout: The End Or A New Beginning?, Patricia J. Alsup Jr

Research Papers

Human services work entails providing services to others.  Services are personalized to meet the needs and desires of the recipient.  Providers may encounter a range of emotions, not only their own but those of the service recipient and other interested parties. Combined with increased workloads, fewer resources, and outside pressures, employees can experience job stress or burnout.  This work explores the nature of human services work and burnout and provides recommendations for further examination to aid in retaining service providers, thereby preserving continuity and quality of services.

Evaluating The Effects Of Reinforcer Choice And Reinforcer Variation On The Response Rates Of Children With Autism, Alice Ann Keyl Austin May 2011

Evaluating The Effects Of Reinforcer Choice And Reinforcer Variation On The Response Rates Of Children With Autism, Alice Ann Keyl Austin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Motivating individuals with autism can be challenging for clinicians and educators seeking to increase skills or decrease problem behaviors. Even when highly preferred reinforcers have been identified, they tend to lose their effectiveness over time. Over the years, several strategies have been developed to maintain the effectiveness of reinforcers. Reinforcer variation has been demonstrated to attenuate decreases in responding associated with repeated exposure to a single reinforcer. Another strategy that has been used to help maintain responding is allowing an individual a choice among reinforcers. Several researchers have suggested that providing choice among several reinforcers may produce the same effects …

The Effect Of Direct Instruction In Teaching Addition And Subtraction Of Decimals And Decimal Word Problems On Students At Risk For Academic Failure, Heather Hoopes Small May 2011

The Effect Of Direct Instruction In Teaching Addition And Subtraction Of Decimals And Decimal Word Problems On Students At Risk For Academic Failure, Heather Hoopes Small

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study investigated the effects of a direct instruction program on the ability of elementary school students identified as at risk for math failure to add and subtract numbers with decimals, and complete addition and subtraction word problems with decimals. Direct instruction has previously been shown to increase the math skills of special education and general education students. This study examined the extent to which these students could master these skills in six hours of instruction, with carefully designed sequences of examples and strategy instruction in word problems. The study took place in two elementary schools. The participants were fifth …

Increasing Mand Variability In Preschoolers With Autism, Tyra P. Sellers May 2011

Increasing Mand Variability In Preschoolers With Autism, Tyra P. Sellers

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Language development and the ability to access reinforcement in young children with autism may be impeded by lack of behavioral variability in verbal behavior. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of simultaneously teaching multiple responses and extinction of repetition on producing varied verbal behavior in young children with autism. In particular, we examined the effects of these procedures on increasing the behavioral variability of mands used to request edibles in preschool children with autism. For all three participants, neither increasing mand repertoires via teaching multiple responses, nor extinction of repetition, by themselves or in combination were …

Classroom Applications Of A Trial-Based Functional Analysis In An Early Childhood Education Setting, Jennifer Laura Jensen May 2011

Classroom Applications Of A Trial-Based Functional Analysis In An Early Childhood Education Setting, Jennifer Laura Jensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Functional analysis has proven to be an effective way of determining the function of problem behaviors. However, this process can consume a great deal of time and resources. Also, the majority of analyses are conducted with subjects greater than six years of age with unfamiliar persons conducting the analysis. Therefore, there is a need to examine a method that will expend less time and resources, and to determine if this new method will be effective with subjects in an early childhood setting. The current study examines the ability of classroom teachers to conduct a trial-based functional analysis within an early …

Examining Sexual Assault Risk Factors In Female College Athletes, Eric Limegrover May 2011

Examining Sexual Assault Risk Factors In Female College Athletes, Eric Limegrover

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Sexual assault has been a widely studied occurrence in the United States and continues to be a major problem on college campuses. Recent surveys of college women have found that between 15% and 20% have experienced rape (Flack et al., 2007; McMahon, 2007). Unfortunately, little empirical research has examined specific college populations that maybe at a greater risk of sexual assault. Female college athletes comprise a special population that has been linked to many of the risk factors that are associated with an increased likelihood of experiencing sexual assault. This study examined risk factors associated with sexual assault such as …

Explanatory Autism Disclosure In The Workplace: Perspectives Of Key Stakeholder Groups, Anna Genchanok, Linda Kunce Apr 2011

Explanatory Autism Disclosure In The Workplace: Perspectives Of Key Stakeholder Groups, Anna Genchanok, Linda Kunce

Honors Projects

The high prevalence of unemployment and underemployment among adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) is exacerbated by public misunderstanding of this complex condition. Many individuals with ASD work alongside coworkers and supervisors who are unknowledgeable about the disorder, which promotes the development of misconceptions regarding the individual’s ability to function in the workplace. Despite frequent recommendations both for and against the use of explanatory ASD disclosure in work settings, there is a lack of empirical research directly assessing stakeholder perceptions of such disclosure. The goal of this small sample, exploratory study was to evaluate the implementation of an explanatory disclosure …

Etsu Today - Spring 2011, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University Apr 2011

Etsu Today - Spring 2011, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

ETSU Today [magazine]

On Monday, October 2, 1911, 29 students arrived at a place that had been, only a few years earlier, a piece of farmland. They were the first to enroll at East Tennessee State Normal School. Some sought credentials for teaching; others entered the new field of domestic science in the hope of becoming better homemakers. They took a chance, these pioneering 29. Some gave up jobs. Some abandoned chores on the family farm. They were uncertain about what they would find on this campus where cows had once grazed. Its state appropriation for operation and maintenance was under $36,000 for …

Attitudes Towards Library Patrons With Physical Challenges: A Survey Of Members Of The Public Library Division Of The Alabama Library Association, Jackie Brodsky, Muriel K. Wells Apr 2011

Attitudes Towards Library Patrons With Physical Challenges: A Survey Of Members Of The Public Library Division Of The Alabama Library Association, Jackie Brodsky, Muriel K. Wells

The Southeastern Librarian

By surveying members of the Public Library Division of the Alabama Library Association, this study sought to determine attitudes toward patrons with physical challenges. The continued growth in the population of persons over age 65, coupled with the fact that nearly one in five Americans report some level of physical challenge, suggests the need for libraries to provide resources and services to this growing constituency. The advent of new technologies and resources for libraries to provide access to information by persons with physical challenges, allows more users to fulfill a more participatory role within their information-seeking activities. The application of …

Addressing The Technology Gap In Counselor Education: Identification Of Characteristics In Students That Affect Learning In College Classrooms, Isaac Burt, Tiphanie Gonzalez, Jacqueline Swank, David L. Ascher Apr 2011

Addressing The Technology Gap In Counselor Education: Identification Of Characteristics In Students That Affect Learning In College Classrooms, Isaac Burt, Tiphanie Gonzalez, Jacqueline Swank, David L. Ascher

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

As advancements in technology continue to revolutionize the field of counseling, certain populations of students still encounter difficulties incorporating technology in the classroom. Non-traditional students, many who possesses years of professional experience, struggle academically due to a lack of technological expertise and knowledge. Low technological expertise potentially decreases students’ self-efficacy, enjoyment, and performance (Baturay & Bay, 2010). Consequently, it is imperative that counselor educators use a variety of strategies with non-traditional students struggling with technology. Thus, the purpose of this article is to propose guidelines encompassing self-efficacy, the evolution of technology and competencies required for assisting students in the classroom.
