Climate Change And The Puget Sound: Building The Legal Framework For Adaptation, Yee Huang, Robert L. Glicksman, Catherine O'Neill, William L. Andreen

Articles

The scope of climate change impacts is expected to be extraordinary touching every ecosystem on the planet and affecting human interactions with the natural and built environment From increased surface and water temperatures to sea level rise and more frequent extreme weather events climate change promises vast and profound alterations to our world Indeed scientists predict continued climate change impacts regardless of any present or future mitigation efforts due to the longlived nature of greenhouse gases emitted over the last century The need to adapt to this new future is crucial Adaptation may take a variety of forms from implementing …

Kelo-Style Failings, Alberto B. Lopez

Articles

This Article proposes a mechanism to internalize the risk to the public interest created by the process of land assembly utilized in conjunction with most eminent domain-related projects. The Article explains how the traditional bifurcated process of land assembly produces a schism between the land assembler's acquisition of title and the ability of the land assembler to make a productive use of the acquired property. The gap of time between title acquisition and use permits a change of circumstances to thwart the completion of a redevelopment project, which leaves the public to incur the costs of post-litigation waste. To internalize …

Subsurface Drainage In Clay Soils In A Northern Climate And Its Effects On Various Soybean Cultivars And Soil Properties., Jack Adam Brodshaug Jan 2011

Subsurface Drainage In Clay Soils In A Northern Climate And Its Effects On Various Soybean Cultivars And Soil Properties., Jack Adam Brodshaug

Plant Sciences

The Red River Valley of the North in North Dakota and Minnesota is a region with unique clay soils. Since 1993, the region has seen increased annual rainfall that has caused seasonal soil waterlogging, inhibiting crop yield potential. Prolonged waterlogging may cause debilitating physiological and chemical problems in plants. Subsurface (tile) drainage is relatively new to the region and offers an option farmers are exploring to help reduce excess water in the rootzone. The objective of this research was to identify the effect of subsurface drainage on soybean [ Glycine max (L.) Merr.] productivity using various cultivars and to evaluate …

Increasing The Genetic Diversity Of U.S. Northern Corn Belt Hybrids With Tropical And Temperate Exotic Germplasm, Santosh Sharma Jan 2011

Increasing The Genetic Diversity Of U.S. Northern Corn Belt Hybrids With Tropical And Temperate Exotic Germplasm, Santosh Sharma

Plant Sciences

The NDSU EarlyGEM or the Early Germplasm Enhancement of Maize (Zea maize L.) is a long term incorporation program designed to increase the genetic diversity of short season hybrids. Starting in 1999, exotic GEM breeding crosses derived from temperate accessions: BR52051, CH05015; tropical accessions: SCR01, CUBA17, FS8B; and tropical hybrid DKB844 along with late checks: B73, Mo17, and Iowa Stiff Stalk Synthetic (BSSS), were adapted to short-seasons and incorporated via a modified backcross (BC) procedure. This study was designed to assess the genetic diversity in exotic derived BC1:S1 lines and their competitive potential as sources of new and unique hybrids. …

Wheat Traits Variations, Associations, And Potential Improvement From Crosses Of Elite X Non-Adapted Germplasm, Eder Eduardo Mantovani Jan 2011

Wheat Traits Variations, Associations, And Potential Improvement From Crosses Of Elite X Non-Adapted Germplasm, Eder Eduardo Mantovani

Plant Sciences

Wheat improvement most often has been accompanied by a narrowing germplasm base, as newer cultivars have been derived from intercrosses between elite germplasm. However, there is a concern that narrow germplasm may restrict breeding improvement for important traits such as resistances to new biotic and abiotic stresses. In addition to germplasm base, the wheat kernel is a major component of wheat grain yield and an important factor for milling characteristics. Focusing on wheat kernel characteristics might be a key element to improve wheat genotypes for agronomic and quality traits. With the intention to broaden the wheat germplasm, and to explore …

By incorporating pay satisfaction at Level 1 and Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) at Level 2, we investigated the relationship between the love of money and self-reported corrupt intent among 6,382 managers in 31 geopolitical entities across six continents. Our significant cross-level three-way interaction effect showed that for managers with high pay satisfaction, the intensity (slope) of the love of money to corrupt intent relationship was almost identical in high or low CPI entities but the former had the lowest magnitude of corrupt intent, whereas the latter had the highest. For those with low pay satisfaction, the slope was the steepest …
