Personal Knowledge And The Inner Sciences, Martin Zwick Jan 2011

Personal Knowledge And The Inner Sciences, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper conceptualizes spiritual disciplines as sciences. It uses this conceptualization to probe into the similarities and differences between modern science and religious tradition, and into the cultural significance and possible future impact of the “new religions”. The paper draws upon the ideas of Michael Polanyi as a possible bridge between science and religion, and proposes that these ideas are relevant not only to the major Western religions, but to Eastern and non-mainstream Western religions as well. Imagining science as a spiritual path, or gnosis, would challenge an exclusivist understanding of scientific knowledge, and suggest the relevance of such knowledge …

Again, With Feeling! [Exhibition Catalogue], Dave Colangelo Jan 2011

Again, With Feeling! [Exhibition Catalogue], Dave Colangelo

School of Film Faculty Publications and Presentations

Again, With Feeling! presents the work of artists whose visions are injected with properties of pattern, repetition, and appropriation. Taking cues from the everyday, the works displayed show new incarnations or morphs of their originals. This multidisciplinary show explores the ‘re’-mixing, producing, or contextualizing of an original, whether through motif, object or experience. By re-negotiating the terms around their borrowed imagery or performance, these artists present us with a fresh composition of a thing we’ve seen before.

Educational Programming For Students Who Are Deafblind: Position Statement, Amy T. Parker, Betsy L. Mcginnity, Susan M. Bruce Jan 2011

Educational Programming For Students Who Are Deafblind: Position Statement, Amy T. Parker, Betsy L. Mcginnity, Susan M. Bruce

Special Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

Historians have described the characteristics of the field of deafblindness by examining its roots in the fields of blindness, deafness and in multiple disabilities (Collins, 1995; Enerstvedt, 1996; Fish, 1934; Hart, 2006; McInnes, 1999). Deafblindness is a unique field because it relies upon practices from the aforementioned disciplines to meet the complex communication and programming needs of individuals with very diverse conditions. However beyond its formation from multiple bases of knowledge, the deafblindness field has developed some unique characteristics which extend beyond its parent fields and it may be argued that this expansion comes from the needs of students who …

Threshold Concepts And Information Literacy, Lori Townsend, Korey Brunetti, Amy R. Hofer Jan 2011

Threshold Concepts And Information Literacy, Lori Townsend, Korey Brunetti, Amy R. Hofer

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

What do we teach when we teach information literacy in higher education? This paper describes a pedagogical approach to information literacy that helps instructors focus content around transformative learning thresholds. The threshold concept framework holds promise for librarians because it grounds the instructor in the big ideas and underlying concepts that make information literacy exciting and worth learning about. This paper looks at how this new idea relates to existing standards and posits several threshold concepts for information literacy. This article won the 2013 Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Instruction Section (IS) Ilene F. Rockman Publication of the …

The Role Of Health And Physical Activity In The Adoption Of Innovative Land Use Policy: Findings From Surveys Of Local Planners, Jennifer Dill, Deborah A. Howe Jan 2011

The Role Of Health And Physical Activity In The Adoption Of Innovative Land Use Policy: Findings From Surveys Of Local Planners, Jennifer Dill, Deborah A. Howe

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Research has established that built environments, including street networks, bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, and land uses, can positively affect the frequency and duration of daily physical activity. Attention is now being given to policy frameworks such as zoning codes that set the standards and expectations for this built environment. Methods: We examined the adoption and implementation of mixed-use and related zoning provisions with specific attention to the role that physical activity serves as a motivation for such policies and to what extent public health agencies influence the adoption process. A sample of planning directors from 53 communities with outstanding …

Playing With Shadows, Apinan Poshyananda Jan 2011

Playing With Shadows, Apinan Poshyananda

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

This essay reflects on the practice of the Indonesian artist Heri Dono, whose exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 is the anchor. It probes the cultural contexts in which the contemporary art of Dono plays out, identifying key trajectories that help clarify the concerns of this particular articulation: the locale of Yogyakarta, the mentality of the Javanese, and the device of the puppet presentation or the wayang, which derives from the ancient epics.[1] All this is located within the scheme of an exhibition of contemporary art and rendered in such a way that it conveys a certain aesthetic of hybridity and …

Icon And Image In Modern Thai Art: A Preliminary Exploration, John Clark Jan 2011

Icon And Image In Modern Thai Art: A Preliminary Exploration, John Clark

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Thai modern art is marked by the actual deployment of religious or august symbolic icons or the quasi-iconic use of images of variable indexicality in otherwise highly secular contexts. What were the sources for such modern uses and have the semiotic functions of icons shifted? To answer these questions, at least partially, religious functions for images are examined by tracking the use of court images and Buddhist figures.

Affirming Difference: Everyday Aesthetic Experience After Phenomenology, Wood Roberdeau Jan 2011

Affirming Difference: Everyday Aesthetic Experience After Phenomenology, Wood Roberdeau

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

This article explores the complex relationships among two different types of critique, the socio-temporal zone known as "everyday life" and the moment of the encounter by those who are encountering art works. It proceeds with a close study of the phenomenology of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Mikel Dufrenne, and tests their key concepts against generalized contemporary art practices that question a model of the traditional aesthetic experience by suggesting the possibility that within the expanse of postmodernity such a paradigm has shifted, (although it is not completely irretrievable). The paper argues that this shift has been achieved by remobilizing readymade objects …

Disgust And Ugliness: A Kantian Perspective, Mojca Kuplen Jan 2011

Disgust And Ugliness: A Kantian Perspective, Mojca Kuplen

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Contemporary discussions of the problem of ugliness in Kant’s aesthetic theory have, to my knowledge, left unexplored the relation of disgust to ugliness. At most, they have explained away disgust as merely an extreme form of ugliness or displeasure, as Guyer did in his interpretation of ugliness in Kant’s aesthetic theory,[1] and by that strayed from the phenomenological and conceptual uniqueness of disgust in comparison to ugliness, while Kant, as I argue, did not. As a matter of fact, careful investigation of the concept of disgust in Kant’s writing will reveal the distinctive and multifaceted character that he ascribed …

Aura, Self, And Aesthetic Experience, Marshall Battani Jan 2011

Aura, Self, And Aesthetic Experience, Marshall Battani

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Aesthetic experiences are generated in encounters with cultural objects and such experiences are marked by the free play of cognitive and numinous experience unstructured by concepts. Kant’s famous three types of pleasure, made infamous in social theory by Pierre Bourdieu, are examined in relation to the critical theoretical concept of aura, the social psychology of “flow,” and cognitive explanations of perception to explain experience in aesthetic fields. Theories of aesthetic experience developed at the crossroad of critical social thought and cognitive science hold promise for a social analysis able to avoid the usual sociological pitfalls of either ignoring aesthetics or …

City Walks And Tactile Experiences, Mădălina Diaconu Jan 2011

City Walks And Tactile Experiences, Mădălina Diaconu

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

This paper is an attempt to develop categories of the pedestrian’s tactile and kinaesthetic experience of the city. The beginning emphasizes the haptic qualities of surfaces and textures, which can be “palpated” visually or experienced by walking. Also the lived city is three-dimensional; its corporeal depth is discussed here in relation to the invisible sewers, protuberant profiles, and the formal diversity of roofscapes. A central role is ascribed in the present analysis to the formal similarities between the representation of the city by walking through it and the representation of the tactile form of objects. Additional aspects of the “tactile” …

Between The Kingdom And The Desert Sun: Human Rights, Immigration, And Border Walls, Moria Paz Jan 2011

Between The Kingdom And The Desert Sun: Human Rights, Immigration, And Border Walls, Moria Paz

Faculty Scholarship

A peculiar construction boom is in progress worldwide: border walls are being installed by wealthy countries at an unprecedented rate in order to control unwanted immigration by poor people. This Article asks why, almost a quarter of a century after the Iron Curtain came down, the walls are now going up again. It suggests a provocative answer: these separation barriers are a logical response by States to the way in which human rights law has been enforced in cases bearing on immigration. In other words, and counter-intuitively, the recent boom in border wall construction signals the success of the human …

Now Accepting Applications Online: An Examination Of Privacy Concerns, Explanations, And Control In Applicant Reactions To Internet-Based Selection Procedures, Clayton Alan Yonce

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation explores applicant reactions to Internet-based selection procedures in order to advance theory and practice related to the use modern employee selection tools. Previous authors have explored this topic area (e.g., Harris et al., 2003). However, this dissertation goes beyond previous research by proposing and testing a model that incorporates the measurement of multiple constructs that are highly relevant to organizations when utilizing Internet-based selection procedures. Such constructs include privacy concerns, explanations, control, fairness perceptions, litigation intentions, organizational intentions, and test-taking motivation. Current organizational justice theory, previous findings from studies on applicant reactions to selection procedures, and research on …

Seasonal Ice Mass-Balance Buoys: Adapting Tools To The Changing Arctic, Chris Polashenski, Don Perovich, Jackie Richter-Menge, Bruce Elder Jan 2011

Seasonal Ice Mass-Balance Buoys: Adapting Tools To The Changing Arctic, Chris Polashenski, Don Perovich, Jackie Richter-Menge, Bruce Elder

Dartmouth Scholarship

Monitoring the local mass balance of Arctic sea ice provides opportunities to attribute the observed changes in a particular floe’s mass balance to specific forcing phenomena. A shift from multi- year to seasonal ice in large portions of the Arctic presents a challenge for the existing Lagrangian array of autonomous ice mass-balance buoys, which were designed with a perennial ice cover in mind. This work identifies the anticipated challenges of operation in seasonal ice and presents a new autonomous buoy designed to monitor ice mass balance in the seasonal ice zone. The new design presented incorporates features which allow the …
