Essays On Margin Requirements, Endogenous Illiquidity, And Portfolio Choice, Yajun Wang Jan 2011

Essays On Margin Requirements, Endogenous Illiquidity, And Portfolio Choice, Yajun Wang

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This dissertation includes three essays. The first essay studies the effects of margin requirements. The second essay studies how asymmetric information and imperfect competition affect equilibrium illiquidity. The third essay derives new comparative statics results for the distribution of portfolio payoffs. Margin requirements have long been implemented in almost all financial markets and are often used as an important regulatory tool for improving market conditions. However, their economic impact beyond affecting default risk is still largely unknown. The first essay proposes a tractable and flexible equilibrium model with and without information asymmetry to examine how margin requirements on both long …

Essays On Microeconomics With Incomplete Information, Jie Zheng

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

My dissertation devotes to the understanding of people's interactions under uncertainty.. It contains four essays on Microeconomics with Incomplete Information. Chapter 1 focuses on the existence of rational bubbles in an Allen-Morris-Postlewaite: 1993) setting, and finds positive and negative results for bubbles in an asset market featuring rational expectations equilibrium. An expected bubble is said to exist if it is mutual knowledge that the price of the asset is higher than the expected dividend. Similarly we call it a strong bubble if everyone knows that the price is higher than the maximum possible dividend. Substituting common knowledge for mutual knowledge, …

Three Essays On The Macroeconomics Of Information, Yu Zheng Jan 2011

Three Essays On The Macroeconomics Of Information, Yu Zheng

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This is a collection of essays on the macroeconomics of information. The first chapter, "The Skill Premium, College Enrollment and Education Signals" explores the quantitative implications of a signaling model of education for the evolution of the skill premium for young workers in the US since the 1970s. I formalize the idea that as college education becomes more affordable for a larger fraction of population, not having a college degree becomes a more precise signal about low ability, increasing the college wage premium. The model, when calibrated, suggests that about 17 percent of the growth in college premium is produced …

This paper explores the economic, political, and social motivations for why the United States of America chose not to have a central bank between the years of 1775 and 1913. The paper will explain why in the initial years of the republic there was support for the national bank but over time opinions drastically changed. In addition, it will explore how even after several financial crises during the 1800s, there was still little desire to have a central bank. The paper will conclude by explaining how the presence of a central bank became essential to the U.S. financial markets in …

The Effects Of Hypergravity On Xenopus Embryo Growth And Cardiac Hypertrophy, Bryce Joseph Duchman Jan 2011

The Effects Of Hypergravity On Xenopus Embryo Growth And Cardiac Hypertrophy, Bryce Joseph Duchman

Honors Program Theses

All life on earth has developed and evolved in a 1 G environment. Therefore, any deviation below or above unit gravity will likely have an effect on the development of organisms, including the migration of cells and the dispersion of nutrients. The purpose of this research project is to analyze the effects of hypergravity on the overall body length and cardiac growth of Xenopus laevis embryos. I predict that cardiac hypertrophy will occur in embryos subjected to hypergravity because of the increased force required from the heart to adequately circulate blood and, thus, disperse nutrients. Upon reaching early gastrulation, embryos …

This thesis is a product of an interest I had in classroom assessment as a future educator of Iowa. I wanted to know which types of assessments were being used in order to direct my own teaching practices. The purpose of this project is to determine the extent that alternative assessment is used compared to traditional assessment in Iowa's secondary social science classrooms. This project draws information from current educators and an array of other resources in order to determine the frequency of each method of assessment and the reasons behind any potential trends in methodology. This project reveals current …

Earnings Management And The Effect On Long-Run Performance For Firms With Seasoned Equity Offerings, Danielle Enderson Jan 2011

Earnings Management And The Effect On Long-Run Performance For Firms With Seasoned Equity Offerings, Danielle Enderson

Honors Program Theses

Managers of publicly traded firms use various methods to signal to the market their beliefs about their company's current performance and future prospects. These methods include, among others, the declaration of dividends to common stockholders, a firm's repurchase of its shares in the market, or the issuance of seasoned equity. Each of these actions can be used to send a specific signal to the market based on management's beliefs regarding the firm's financial outlook.

This study focuses on a firm's issuance of seasoned equity. Seasoned equity offerings, or SEOs, are the issuance of additional shares of stock by a firm …

Leading Unconducted Chamber Vocal Ensembles: A Case Study Of The University Of Northern Iowa Varsity Men's Glee Club Camerata, David Hoobler

Honors Program Theses

Recently, unconducted chamber vocal ensembles have emerged as one of, if not the most popular forms of vocal performing groups. TV shows such as "The Sing Off' and "Glee" showcase the musical abilities of this type of ensemble. Barbershop quartets enjoy high levels of popularity. Professional groups such as Voces8 and other groups on many college campuses are constantly in demand for performances. In addition, educators find it necessary to learn how to lead these groups especially in the state of Iowa where quartets are used for All-State auditions, and the popularity of Show Choir necessitates an unconducted vocal ensemble …

Managing Forced Displacement By Law In Africa: The Role Of The New African Union Idps Convention, Won Kidane Jan 2011

Managing Forced Displacement By Law In Africa: The Role Of The New African Union Idps Convention, Won Kidane

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

This Article provides a critical appraisal of the newly adopted African IDPs Convention. In particular, it offers a detailed analysis of the Convention's transformation of the UN Guiding Principles into legally binding rules for the management of the phenomenon of internal displacement in Africa. By definition, internally displaced persons (IDPs) are persons who have not crossed international frontiers and are citizens of the state within which they find themselves. Although their conditions may be similar to refugees, who are necessarily aliens to the host community, their legal status is not analogous. At the most basic level, there is no doctrinal …

Green Jackets In Men's Sizes Only: Gender Discrimination At Private Country Clubs, Thaddeus M. Lenkiewicz Jan 2011

Green Jackets In Men's Sizes Only: Gender Discrimination At Private Country Clubs, Thaddeus M. Lenkiewicz

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

On November 3, 2009, the Supreme Court of Ireland held that the Portmarnock Golf Club could maintain its rule prohibiting female membership free from the sanctions of Ireland's antidiscrimination laws. Portmarnock is representative of the numerous private golf clubs that continue to promote discrimination against women. Despite significant advances in gender equality, private country clubs in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ireland remain bastions of codified gender discrimination. Many of the most prominent golf clubs hold firmly to discriminatory policies established generations ago. Opposition to these policies has come in various forms of protest and litigation, with mixed …

Italian Judges' Point Of View On Foreign States' Immunity, Elena Sciso Jan 2011

Italian Judges' Point Of View On Foreign States' Immunity, Elena Sciso

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The Article gives an account of the most recent Italian practice as regarding foreign states' immunity from the jurisdiction of the forum state. In the absence of domestic laws regulating the matter, Italian courts thus far have been directly applying international customary law, making recourse to a progressive interpretation of international rules. In the past, Italian judicial practice together with the Belgian one gave a great contribution to the consolidation of the restrictive immunity theory. In the last few years, Italian courts have lifted immunity with respect to acts of a foreign state qualified as "acta iure imperii" in civil …

Foreign Official Immunity After Samantar: A United States Government Perspective, Harold H. Koh Jan 2011

Foreign Official Immunity After Samantar: A United States Government Perspective, Harold H. Koh

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

I am delighted to speak here at Vanderbilt regarding the U.S. Government's perspective on Foreign Official Immunity after Samantar v. Yousuf.' In the Samantar case, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously held that the immunity of foreign government officials sued in their personal capacity in U.S. courts, including for alleged human rights violations, is not controlled by the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act of 1976, but rather, by immunity determinations made by the Executive Branch. Let me break my topic today into three parts: first, the world of foreign official immunity as it existed before the Samantar case; second, the Supreme Court's …

Due Process Rights And The Targeted Killing Of Suspected Terrorists, Benjamin Mckelvey Jan 2011

Due Process Rights And The Targeted Killing Of Suspected Terrorists, Benjamin Mckelvey

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), with the approval of the Obama Administration, conducts targeted killings of individual suspected terrorists. These killings have significantly increased since the Iraq war and are now a central component of U.S. counterterrorism strategy. The targeted killing program consists mainly of missile strikes from Predator drones, which are unmanned aerial vehicles operated by the CIA. In May 2010, President Obama's National Security Council approved the targeted killing of Anwar al-Aulaqi, a U.S. citizen and suspected al-Qaeda senior leader believed to be hiding in Yemen. As the first American targeted for extrajudicial lethal force, Aulaqi's situation quickly …

Same Skills, Different Genres: The Importance Of Encouraging More Creative Writing In The First-Year Composition Classroom As A Means Of Fostering Student Learning And Understanding, Sarah Delaney Ben-Zvi

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

After examining several books and articles that explore the links between creative writing and composition, it is evident that many authors and theorists support bridging the two and encouraging teachers to introduce the construction of creative pieces into the composition classroom. However, most of the articles delve into this topic in a theoretical sense, and address issues such as finding one's voice through the personal narrative and other creative nonfiction pieces. This project addresses how specific elements of craft involved in fiction writing and creative nonfiction writing would likely enhance composition skills, especially in regards to rhetorical choices, considering aspects …

The Resounding "Yopp!": The Political Voice Of Dr. Seuss In American Literature, Beverley Elaine Kee Steichen

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

My project focuses on the politically oriented works of literature by Ted Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss): The Butter Battle Book; Horton Hears a Who; The Lorax; The Sneetches; Yertle the Turtle; The [3 J Bartholomew books. Brief mention is made of other Dr. Seuss work, with acknowledgement of other American authors having similar political messages. Focus is given to the "targeted audience" of these children's books, with the claim that Seuss's choice of audience is more successful than the standard adult audience of most advocacy literature, if the goal of the author is positive societal change. Support for this claim …
