Attitudes, William A. Cunningham, Ingrid J. Haas, Andrew Jahn
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
This chapter reviews social neuroscience research that links social psychological attitudes and evaluative processes to their presumed neural bases. The chapter is organized into four parts. The first section discusses how attitude representations are transformed into evaluative states that can be used to guide thought and action. The next two sections address the related processes of attitude learning and change. The final section discusses applications of these concepts for the study of prejudice and political behavior.

News outlets cannot serve as reliable conveyors of social facts, nor do their audiences crave such content. Nonetheless, much political science scholarship assumes that objective information about social, political, and economic topics is routinely transmitted to the mass public through the news. This article addresses the problem of selection bias in news content and illustrates the problem with a content analytic study of New York Times coverage given to American war deaths in five major conflicts that occurred over the past century. We find that news coverage of war deaths is unrelated to how many American combatants have recently died. …

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy For Immigrants Presenting With Social Anxiety Disorder: Two Case Studies, Brandon J. Weiss, J. Suzanne Singh, Debra Anne Hope
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for the treatment of social anxiety disorder (SAD) has demonstrated efficacy in numerous randomized trials. However, few studies specifically examine the applicability of such treatment for ethnic minority clients. Thus, the purpose of this article is to present two case studies examining the utility of individualized CBT for SAD with two clients who immigrated to the United States, one from Central America and one from China, for whom English was not the primary language. Both clients demonstrated improvement on a semistructured interview and self-report measures. Necessary adaptations were modest, suggesting that therapy could be conducted in a …

The present meta-analysis examined the effects of psychosocial treatments at reducing deleterious outcomes of sexual abuse. The meta-analysis included a total of 35 published and unpublished studies written in English, focusing on youth under the age of 18, and evaluating the effectiveness of treatments for the most common negative outcomes of sexual abuse: PTSD symptoms, externalizing problems, and internalizing problems. Results revealed medium effect sizes for PTSD symptoms, externalizing problems, and internalizing problems following treatment for sexual abuse. This study also examined the potential moderating effects of treatment (e.g., modality, duration, and inclusion of caregiver) and participant (e.g., age, gender, …
Space Tourism, Private Spaceflight And The Law: Key Aspects, Frans G. Von Der Dunk
Space Tourism, Private Spaceflight And The Law: Key Aspects, Frans G. Von Der Dunk
Space, Cyber, and Telecommunications Law Program: Faculty Publications
The arrival of ‘space tourism,’ or more appropriately ‘private spaceflight,’ requires the law of outer space to change and adapt to this revolutionary development, as deriving precisely from the principled private participation in these activities. After defining the proper concepts, this paper discusses key legal aspects of authorization and supervision, liability and registration, and how they re.ect and impact on space tourism. Key legal aspects related to certification of craft, crew and passengers, while not yet much articulated at the international level will also be touched upon precisely in order to demonstrate that the law could well be driven first …

Space For Celestial Symphonies? Towards The Establishment Of International Radio Quiet Zones, Frans G. Von Der Dunk
Space, Cyber, and Telecommunications Law Program: Faculty Publications
The growth of low- and medium-Earth orbit mobile satellite communications poses a threat to radio astronomers which could be mitigated by the establishment of international radio quiet zones (IRQZs), where communications traffic is managed (not eliminated) to allow radio astronomy to continue. Using the prototype of national such zones in the USA, this article explains how the system would work and discusses the international legal parameters that would bound it, drawing on current aerospace, outer space and high seas legislation. Precedents for an IRQZ—Exclusive Economic Zones, denuclearized zones and the Antarctic regime—are also examined.
Sun, Sea, Sand ... And Space: Launching Tourists Into Outer Space From The Dutch Caribbean, Frans G. Von Der Dunk
Sun, Sea, Sand ... And Space: Launching Tourists Into Outer Space From The Dutch Caribbean, Frans G. Von Der Dunk
Space, Cyber, and Telecommunications Law Program: Faculty Publications
With the first space tourist flights coming ever closer to reality, the interests in becoming part of this challenging new chapter of human spaceflight are also spreading across the globe. One of the legally most interesting projects concerns the plans of Space Experience Curac;ao, a Dutch company, to develop a spaceport on the island of Curaçao in the Dutch Antilles, so far famous largely for its holiday resorts. The aim is to allow as of 2014 commercial spaceflights to be undertaken from the island as well as to start offering such flights itself from the island. The Dutch Antilles are …
The Legal Framework For Space Projects In Europe: Aspects Of Applicable Law And Dispute Resolution, Frans G. Von Der Dunk
The Legal Framework For Space Projects In Europe: Aspects Of Applicable Law And Dispute Resolution, Frans G. Von Der Dunk
Space, Cyber, and Telecommunications Law Program: Faculty Publications
Space projects in Europe take place in a complicated environment involving many public, private and intergovernmental actors, where the participation of the private sector, as independent space operators or as sub-contractors to others, is usually subsumed under the label of 'the space industry,' producing hardware, software and services to be used in outer space, in support of space activities, or using products, data or information generated with the help of space activities.
Such private, semi-private and quasi-private actors use contracts as the main mechanism to protect their interests, the freedom to contract within the rule oflaw being the paramount overarching …

The Eu Space Competence As Per The Treaty Of Lisbon: Sea Change Or Empty Shell?, Frans G. Von Der Dunk
The Eu Space Competence As Per The Treaty Of Lisbon: Sea Change Or Empty Shell?, Frans G. Von Der Dunk
Space, Cyber, and Telecommunications Law Program: Faculty Publications
The entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon late 2009 introduced a so-called 'space competence' of the European Union into the already complicated legal European 'spacescape' . It has been hailed by some as a sea change, a watershed following which the EU finally and irreversibly has entered the realm of legislating for space, whereas others fail to see it as more than an empty shell, a fig leaf for politicians to be able to show at least some progress towards a united European approach and policy with respect to space.
Whilst some discussion has focused on whether this …
The Issue Of National Security In The Context Of National Space Legislation—Comparing European And Non-European States, F. G. Von Der Dunk
The Issue Of National Security In The Context Of National Space Legislation—Comparing European And Non-European States, F. G. Von Der Dunk
Space, Cyber, and Telecommunications Law Program: Faculty Publications
First three paragraphs:
The inherent dual-use character of most, if not all space activities cannot fail to exercise a considerable impact also on the involvement of private actors in space. Much technology used for and/or developed by private space activities may potentially be put at the use of those wishing to change a particular political status quo, and likewise the material results of some private space activities may, consciously or inadvertently, come to be used against the national security interests of one state or another. Hence, issues of national security will likely also have an effect on the issue of …

Current And Future Aac Research Considerations For Adults With Acquired Cognitive And Communication Impairments, Melanie Fried-Oken, David R. Beukelman, Karen Hux
Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
Adults with acquired language impairments secondary to stroke, traumatic brain injury, and neurodegenerative diseases are candidates for communication supports outside of the traditional restoration-based approaches to intervention. Recent research proves repeatedly that augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) provides a means for participation, engagement, conversation, and message transfer when individuals can no longer expect full return of premorbid communication skills and that inclusion of communication supports should begin early. We discuss current research and future directions for integrated systems of technical supports that include low-technology, high tech, and partner-dependent strategies for adults with severe and chronic aphasia, cognitive-communication problems resulting from …

This study examines the effects of poor parenting on dating violence perpetration and victimization among approximately 900 males and females from the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent Health (Add Health). Results revealed that more physical abuse and low parental warmth were linked to greater substance use and higher rates of delinquency. In addition, low parental warmth, more neglect, and greater delinquency had positive direct effects on dating violence perpetration, whereas more physical abuse, low parental warmth, and increased delinquency were all positively associated with dating violence victimization. Finally, delinquency mediated the link between low parental warmth and dating violence perpetration …
Pregnancy And Intimate Partner Violence: Risk Factors, Severity, And Health Effects, Douglas A. Brownridge, Tamara L. Tallieu, Kimberly A. Tyler, Agnes Tiwari, Ko Ling Chan, Susy C. Santos
Pregnancy And Intimate Partner Violence: Risk Factors, Severity, And Health Effects, Douglas A. Brownridge, Tamara L. Tallieu, Kimberly A. Tyler, Agnes Tiwari, Ko Ling Chan, Susy C. Santos
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
The current study compares female victims of intimate partner violence (IPV) who were and were not victimized during pregnancy. Victims of pregnancy violence are more likely to report having experienced all forms of violence, particularly severe forms, and have higher odds of experiencing several postviolence indicators of severity and adverse health consequences. The significance of predictors disappears in a post hoc analysis controlling for proxies of battering behavior (i.e., repeated and severe violence), suggesting that victims who experience violence during pregnancy may be more likely to be in a current intimate relationship with an abuser who inflicts repeated and severe …
Same-Sex Marriage In A Welcoming World: Rights Consciousness Of Heterosexuals In Liberal Religious Institutions, Emily Kazyak
Same-Sex Marriage In A Welcoming World: Rights Consciousness Of Heterosexuals In Liberal Religious Institutions, Emily Kazyak
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Previous research suggests that gays and lesbians not only look to the law as an important site of social recognition but also pursue strategies to legitimate their relationships outside of the law, such as having commitment ceremonies in religious institutions. While previous research suggests that homosexuality is a divisive issue within religious communities, we know little about how heterosexual religious people understand same-sex marriage. I aim to fill this gap and analyze the rights consciousness of heterosexual members in liberal religious denominations. Drawing on in-depth interviews, I examine how people make sense of the relationship between law and social change. …
Series-Connected Self-Reconfigurable Multicell Battery, Taesic Kim, Wei Qiao, Liyan Qu
Series-Connected Self-Reconfigurable Multicell Battery, Taesic Kim, Wei Qiao, Liyan Qu
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
This paper proposes a novel series-connected, self-reconfigurable, multi-cell battery design. A new cell switching circuit topology is proposed and implemented by using high efficiency semiconductor devices for dynamic configuration of the multi-cell battery. Each cell in the battery only uses two switches to fully control its operation independently. The proposed design can maximally utilize the battery’s capacity and is tolerant to failures of single or multiple cells. These prolong the operating time and lifespan and enhance the reliability of the battery system. By using the proposed design, additional monitoring, control, protection and optimization functions can be readily added to each …
A Dual-Network Testbed For Wireless Sensor Applications, Jedrzej Kowalczuk, Mehmet C. Vuran, Lance C. Pérez

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
A dual-network Cyber-physical Networking (CPN) testbed developed at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is described. The CPN testbed consists of two geographically disparate wireless sensor networks connected by a traditional TCP/IP network and enables peer-to-peer communication between each sensor in the network. The functionality of the testbed is enhanced by a range of software tools that support remote programming and network monitoring, and real-time visualization of sensor data. The resulting architecture supports easy deployment and evaluation of applications for both traditional and interconnected wireless sensor networks. To demonstrate the features of this testbed, a novel ping application was developed and deployed …
On The Effective Capacity Of Two-Hop Communication Systems, Deli Qiao, M. Cenk Gursoy, Senem Velipasalar
On The Effective Capacity Of Two-Hop Communication Systems, Deli Qiao, M. Cenk Gursoy, Senem Velipasalar
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
In this paper, two-hop communication between a source and a destination with the aid of an intermediate relay node is considered. Both the source and intermediate relay node are assumed to operate under statistical quality of service (QoS) constraints imposed as limitations on the buffer overflow probabilities. It is further assumed that the nodes send the information at fixed power levels and have perfect channel side information. In this scenario, the maximum constant arrival rates that can be supported by this two-hop link are characterized by finding the effective capacity. Through this analysis, the impact upon the throughput of having …
Support Vector Machine-Based Short-Term Wind Power Forecasting, Jianwu Zeng, Wei Qiao
Support Vector Machine-Based Short-Term Wind Power Forecasting, Jianwu Zeng, Wei Qiao
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
This paper proposes a support vector machine (SVM)-based statistical model for wind power forecasting (WPF). Instead of predicting wind power directly, the proposed model first predicts the wind speed, which is then used to predict the wind power by using the power-wind speed characteristics of the wind turbine generators. Simulation studies are carried out to validate the proposed model for very short-term and short term WPF by using the data obtained from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). Results show that the proposed model is accurate for very short-term and short-term WPF and outperforms the persistence model as well as …

Peer Review Across Disciplines: Improving Student Performance In The Honors Humanities Classroom, Julie M. Barst, April Brooks, Leda Cempellin, Barb Kleinjan
Honors in Practice Online Archive
The term “peer review” often elicits a negative response from teachers and students alike. The process involves numerous challenges; anyone who has used the technique knows that students often feel awkward giving feedback to their peers and even more uncomfortable accepting the advice of peers in a classroom setting. They hesitate to voice negatives about performance, possibly because they doubt their own reaction to the material presented or fear that, in retaliation, they will be rated poorly as well. In addition, when teachers fail to establish and communicate clearly defined expectations, student authors do not produce high-quality drafts, and student …
On The Interplay Between Channel Sensing And Estimation In Cognitive Radio Systems, M. Cenk Gursoy, Sinan Gezici Sinan Gezici
On The Interplay Between Channel Sensing And Estimation In Cognitive Radio Systems, M. Cenk Gursoy, Sinan Gezici Sinan Gezici
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Cognitive radio transmissions in the presence of channel uncertainty are considered. In practical scenarios, cognitive secondary users need to perform both channel sensing in order to identify whether the channel is being occupied by the primary users or not, and also channel estimation in order to learn the channel fading coefficients. Generally, errors occur in both channel sensing and estimation, and this leads to a coupling between the two. More specifically, imperfect sensing affects both the structure and the performance of channel estimation schemes. With this motivation, the interactions between channel sensing and estimation are studied in this paper. In …

The Legal Pluralism Phenomenon: Emerging Issues On Protecting And Preserving The Sacred Ifugao Bulul, Mayo Buenafe
The Legal Pluralism Phenomenon: Emerging Issues On Protecting And Preserving The Sacred Ifugao Bulul, Mayo Buenafe
Nebraska Anthropologist
Legal Pluralism is a pervasive social phenomenon encompassing issues relevant to the protection and preservation of indigenous peoples' intellectual and cultural properties. This study focuses on the sacred lfugao bulul or lfugao rice granary guardian spirit, which is being sold and traded as antiques, cultural properties, and tourist souvenirs. The sacred lfugao bulul is studied as an intellectual and cultural property and explores how it can be authenticated, preserved, and protected within three legal systems: Customary Law (lfugao rituals, beliefs, and practices), State Law (Cultural Properties Protection and Preservation Act or P.D. 374), and International Law (Intellectual Property Code of …
A Hybrid Battery Model Capable Of Capturing Dynamic Circuit Characteristics And Nonlinear Capacity Effects, Taesic Kim, Wei Qiao
A Hybrid Battery Model Capable Of Capturing Dynamic Circuit Characteristics And Nonlinear Capacity Effects, Taesic Kim, Wei Qiao
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
A high-fidelity battery model capable of accurately predicting battery performance is required for proper design and operation of battery-powered systems. However, the existing battery models have at least one of the following drawbacks: 1) requiring intensive computation due to high complexity; 2) not applicable for electrical circuit design and simulation; and 3) not capable of accurately capturing the state of charge (SOC) and predicting run time of the battery due to neglecting the nonlinear capacity effects. This paper proposes a novel hybrid battery model, which takes the advantages of an electrical circuit battery model to accurately predicting the dynamic circuit …
