This study focuses on the English lexis loans found in the Tamil short stories of Malaysia. The main objective of this study is to examine the extent and the manner in which the English lexis loans occur in the Tamil literature involving short stories of Malaysia. These lexis loans are analyzed on the basis of their categories and the patterns of their formation. Altogether 93 Tamil short stories, published in three Tamil dailies of Malaysia namely, Tamil Nesan, Makkal Osai and Malaysia Nanban, for the period of six months have been selected for analysis. Since the above dailies are the …

Malaysia is a multiracial society. Each race has its own language and culture. They are also exposed to various languages in different situations. They use their mother tongue when they communicate among their own race and use the Malay language and English language when they communicate with other races and in official context. This situation has given rise to a multilingual society in this country. The use of various languages or mixture of various languages in conversations has become a common norm among individuals in this country. The habit of code switching and code mixing has become a normal practice …

Differential Positron And Electron Ionization Studies: How A Plus Or Minus Sign Makes A Difference, Robert D. Dubois Jan 2011

Differential Positron And Electron Ionization Studies: How A Plus Or Minus Sign Makes A Difference, Robert D. Dubois

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Doubly and triply differential data for single ionization of argon, neon and molecular nitrogen have been measured for positron and electron impact energies of 200, 250, and 500 eV. Ratios of triply to doubly differential ionization yields as functions of the projectile scattering angle and energy loss are compared in order to investigate differences associated with the sign of the projectile charge. for all three systems, systematic differences are observed in the relative contributions of binary interactions. These differences are shown to increase with increasing scattering angle. Nearly identical recoil intensities are found for positron and electron impact ionization of …

Scattering-Angle Dependence Of Doubly Differential Cross Sections For Fragmentation Of H₂ By Proton Impact, Kisra N. Egodapitiya, Sachin D. Sharma, Aaron C. Laforge, Michael Schulz Jan 2011

Scattering-Angle Dependence Of Doubly Differential Cross Sections For Fragmentation Of H₂ By Proton Impact, Kisra N. Egodapitiya, Sachin D. Sharma, Aaron C. Laforge, Michael Schulz

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have measured double differential cross sections (DDCS) for proton fragment formation for fixed projectile energy losses as a function of projectile scattering angle in 75 keV p + H2 collisions. An oscillating pattern was observed in the angular dependence of the DDCS with a frequency about twice as large as what we found earlier for nondissociative ionization. Possible origins for this frequency doubling are discussed.

Language Choice And Shift Among Families Of Sino-Malay Mixed Marriages., Mohana Raju Jan 2011

Language Choice And Shift Among Families Of Sino-Malay Mixed Marriages., Mohana Raju

Student Works (2010-2019)

In this study, the researcher has made an attempt to investigate the language choice of Sino-Malay mixed marriage families residing in Subang Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. The study hopes to look for any existing patterns to indicate if these families are shifting from the native tongues existing at home, namely, Malay and Chinese, to another language due to their choice of language for selected domains and perception towards the mother tongues. In this study, participants consisted of sixteen (16) Sino-Malay mixed-marriage families of which the fathers are all Malay and mothers are all of Chinese descent. The theoretical framework of the …

Formative Assessment Structures To Enhance Student Learning Despite Resource Limitiations, Maire Crean, Catherine Prunty

Conference papers

Higher Education student numbers are rising globally and yet teacher numbers are being reduced - all because of economic constraints and external criticisms. Despite these limitations, which all educators face today, the quality of teaching and depth of learning requires to be maintained. The impressive pace and rising numbers of educators who research and test methodologies which are developed and then shared to enhance teaching and learning is to be applauded. The study outlined in this article was inspired by just such seminal education researchers.

This paper has emerged from a small action research case study that was completed in …

The Use Of Visuals In Health Education, Ying Yan Vigenia Njoo-Lau

Graduate Research Papers

America has a very complex health care system. It is often required a welleducated individual "to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions" (Nielsen-Bohlman, 2004). It is also required multiple skills, like reading, writing, listening, speaking, mathematic, and decision-making (Safeer & Keenan, 2005).

90 million American adults have limited health literacy to navigate of the health care system in the United States. People with limited health literacy have trouble communicating with their health care providers, understand and adherence of medical information, medical usage. $73 billion health care cost was estimated in 1998 …

Traditional Traders And Hypermarket Growth In Malaysia., Holst Hans Peter Jan 2011

Traditional Traders And Hypermarket Growth In Malaysia., Holst Hans Peter

Student Works (2010-2019)

Retail markets in Malaysia were protected from foreign direct investment and competition until the latter part of the 1980s when the Government began a deliberate policy of liberalisation. this change is exemplified by French hypermarket chain Carrefour opening the first hypermarket in Malaysia, in 1994. Carrefour was the hypermarket leader in France and experienced in developing economies, e.g. Thailand; Brazil. The large scale and technologies of the hypermarket selling space and organisation were new to Malaysia, and visibly attracted large numbers of customers. Hypermarket inscreased their presence in Malaysia in  a short period of time. The 1999 Review of Progress …

Pre-Adulthood Developmental Psycho-Social Influences Behind Women Becoming Engineers In Contemporary Australia, Andrew Ruscoe Jan 2011

Pre-Adulthood Developmental Psycho-Social Influences Behind Women Becoming Engineers In Contemporary Australia, Andrew Ruscoe

Theses : Honours

This study explored the pre-adulthood development of female engineers with a focus on influences behind their career choice. Pre-adulthood encompasses the ages 0. to 23 and includes all development prior to settling on a career (Levinson, Darrow, Klein, Levinson, & McKee, 1979). ,This area of study derives its importance from the continuing low proportion of women in engineering (9.6%; Kaspura, 2009), the gender bias that this may indicate (Burke & Mattis, 2007), and the benefits of increasing the number of women• in engineering (Engineers Australia, 20 I 0). A phenomenological methodology was applied, utilising semi-structured interviews with 10 female graduate, …

Synthesis And Characterisation Of Macrocycles Containing Both Tetrazole And Pyridine Functionalities, Adrienne Fleming, Jackie Gaire, Fintan Kelleher, John Mcginley, Vickie Mckee

Articles

The syntheses of tetra-tetrazole macrocycles containing at least one 2,6-bis(tetrazole)pyridine unit, linked by a variety of n-alkyl (n = 3, 5, 7 or 9 carbon atoms) chain lengths, are described. There has been no previous incorporation of the pyridine moiety into a tetra-tetrazolophane macrocycle. The crystal structure of one such tetra-tetrazole macrocycle has also been structurally characterised and revealed a bowl-shaped conformation.

The Inherent Tension Between Value Creation And Value Claiming During Bargaining Interactions, Charles B. Craver Jan 2011

The Inherent Tension Between Value Creation And Value Claiming During Bargaining Interactions, Charles B. Craver

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

When individuals negotiate, they must initially use the Information Stage to create value by discussing the different issues to be addressed and by exploring the interests underlying those items. They must be willing to disclose their basic interests if progress is to be made, but they are usually not entirely candid for strategic purposes. They may over-state the degree to which they want items they think the other side values and under-state the degree to which they want items they believe the other side does not value. They then move into the Distributive Stage to decide how their joint surplus …

A New Legal Theory To Test Executive Pay: Contractual Unconscionability, Lawrence A. Cunningham Jan 2011

A New Legal Theory To Test Executive Pay: Contractual Unconscionability, Lawrence A. Cunningham

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Lucrative pay to corporate managers remains controversial yet continues to evade judicial scrutiny for legitimacy. Although many arrangements likely would pass the most rigorous scrutiny, it seems equally clear that some would not. Some agreements are not the product of arm’s-length bargaining, can rivet managers on short-term stock prices at the destruction of long-term business value, and can misalign manager-shareholder interests. Yet even such objectionable arrangements are immune from serious legal oversight. In theory, they are open to judicial review under corporate law, but shareholders challenging pay contracts face formidable procedural hurdles in derivative litigation and substantive obstacles from corporation …

Removing Property From Intellectual Property And (Intended?) Pernicious Impacts On Innovation And Competition, F. Scott Kieff Jan 2011

Removing Property From Intellectual Property And (Intended?) Pernicious Impacts On Innovation And Competition, F. Scott Kieff

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Commentators have poured forth a loud and sustained outcry over the past few years that sees property rule treatment of intellectual property (IP) as a cause of excessive transaction costs, thickets, anticommons, hold-ups, hold-outs, and trolls, which unduly tax and retard innovation, competition, and economic growth. The popular response has been to seek a legislative shift towards some limited use of weaker, liability rule treatment, usually portrayed as “just enough” to facilitate transactions in those special cases where the bargaining problems are at their worst and where escape hatches are most needed. This essay is designed to make two contributions. …

Docket Control And The Success Of Constitutional Courts, David Fontana Jan 2011

Docket Control And The Success Of Constitutional Courts, David Fontana

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This chapter, an invited contribution to a compendium on comparative constitutional law, argues that giving courts the power of docket control can contribute to their power and success. To make this point, this chapter surveys the experiences of several emerging and established constitutional democracies. Deciding what cases to decide permits a court to issue the right decisions at the right times, what this chapter calls ‘issue timing.’ A court can avoid encountering an issue until the country is ready to discuss the issue, and perhaps ready to resolve the issue in the manner the court is contemplating – or the …

Plus Factors And Agreement In Antitrust Law, William E. Kovacic Jan 2011

Plus Factors And Agreement In Antitrust Law, William E. Kovacic

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Despite the crucial role of concerted action to collusion among rival firms, few elements are more perplexing than the design of evidentiary standards to determine whether parallel conduct stems from collective or from unilateral decision making. Courts allow a collusive agreement to be established by circumstantial evidence, but the evidence must show additional evidence — “plus factors” — beyond parallel movement in price. Chief plus factors identified by courts have included actions contrary to each defendant’s self-interest unless pursued as part of a collective plan, phenomena that can be explained rationally only as a result of concerted action, evidence that …

Government Lawyering, Jessica Tillipman, Robert B. Mahini

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

The legal profession is regulated with numerous ethical rules designed to ensure that practitioners comply with its high standards of professional conduct. Federal Government attorneys, while generally held to the same ethical standards as other attorneys, are subject to an additional set of requirements mandated by federal laws and regulations. This article focuses on the rules most crucial to the protection of the public welfare: 1) Government attorneys’ ethical obligations, and 2) Government attorneys’ duty to properly control information.

Government attorneys of the Executive Branch must comply with the “Standards of Ethical Conduct for Employees of the Executive Branch.” This …
