The Moisture Performance Of Straw Bale Construction In A Temperate Maritime Climate, Jim Carfrae
The Moisture Performance Of Straw Bale Construction In A Temperate Maritime Climate, Jim Carfrae
School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses
This thesis is an investigation into the moisture performance of straw bales used in the construction of buildings. The principle of taking bales of straw off the field and stacking them up on themselves to form the walls of a simple building is a practise that started over a hundred years ago. The modern form of this building method is more sophisticated, and is spreading world wide from its origins in the arid regions of America. Despite advances in modern methods of construction there has been concern and doubt over the suitability of straw bale for use as a building …

You Can't Go Home Again: The Place Of Tradition In "Firefly's" Dystopian-Utopia And Utopian-Distopia, R Brown
School of Art, Design and Architecture
Science fiction has long been a site in which utopian-dystopian visions have been articulated. This paper uses one exemplar of this genre as a springboard into a discussion of the desire for a return to origin and of flawed attempts to impose an image of that origin, with discursions into illustrations drawn from contemporary conditions. In opposition to the hegemonic and reductive tendencies inherent in such attempts, this paper proposes an alternative which engages with the everyday reality of life. Intrinsic to this proposition is that our traditions and utopias must be founded upon a continual (re)making in the everyday.
Third Way Architecture: Between Cybernetics And Phenomenology, S Murrani
Third Way Architecture: Between Cybernetics And Phenomenology, S Murrani
School of Art, Design and Architecture
This article in its essence aims to challenge and unfold, each at a time, two different fields of methodology – cybernetics and phenomenology – that have direct effects on the product of being and the process of becoming in architectural discourse. Furthermore, this article suggests a third way philosophy for architecture that relates notions of post-phenomenology and technoscience, and considers both to be equally vital to development and speculation within current architectural discourse. First, the history of each of the two fields – cybernetics and phenomenology – will be unveiled with a focus on exploring their impact upon architecture in …

Plymouth Business School Theses
This thesis is concerned with the impacts of national culture on the cross-border-mergers and acquisitions performance in the banking industry across Egypt and UK through studying the role of the human side as a mediator variable. The main conceptual framework has been developed based on the GLOBE cultural project. It perceives the national culture as a multi-dimensional construct that interacts between levels. The thesis consists of a mixed methods approach which investigated international mergers and acquisitions by banks in Egypt and the UK from 2004 to 2007. The data collection process was carried out between June 2008 and November 2009 …

Al-Khawaaldah Bani Hasan (Ash-Shu’ayree As-Salafi)Creditworthiness is a quality that is important to all stakeholders of an organisation, especially bondholders. It is posited that good corporate governance practices assist the confidence that stakeholders have in an organization’s ability to generate the strong cash flows that are needed to meet financial obligations, which in turn should enhance credit risk assessments. Much research has been conducted into …
Don't Blame Me, Blame The Financial Crisis: A Survey Of Dismissal Rulings In 10b-5 Suits For Subprime Securities Losses, Christopher J. Miller
Don't Blame Me, Blame The Financial Crisis: A Survey Of Dismissal Rulings In 10b-5 Suits For Subprime Securities Losses, Christopher J. Miller
Fordham Law Review
This Note surveys thirty-four district court decisions on motions to dismiss in actions brought under SEC Rule 10b-5 for losses suffered during the recent financial crisis. This Note focuses on issues of scienter and loss causation, the elements of a 10b-5 claim most likely to be affected by a market-wide downturn. In the opinions surveyed, successfully pleading scienter proved the biggest hurdle for plaintiffs in surviving a motion to dismiss, and this Note proceeds to analyze the factors that influenced whether a district court found scienter to be adequately pleaded. This Note also examines efforts by both plaintiffs and defendants …
Covenant In Conflict: The Controversy Over The Church Covenant Between Samuel Rutherford And Thomas Hooker, Sang Hyuck Ahn
Covenant In Conflict: The Controversy Over The Church Covenant Between Samuel Rutherford And Thomas Hooker, Sang Hyuck Ahn
CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines the mid-seventeenth-century controversy over the church government between Samuel Rutherford (Presbyterian) and Thomas Hooker (Congregationalist) focusing on its theological underpinnings. The church covenant played a significant role: For Hooker, it constitutes the theological and logical foundation of his systematic defense of the New England Way—particularly in the issues of the nature of the visible church, church membership, the power of the keys, sacraments, and church discipline. Rutherford considers the church covenant as a human invention because it is unknown to Scripture. In reply, Hooker argues both that the concept of church covenant is warranted by God’s word, …
Called Into Communion: A Paradigm Shift In Holiness Theology, B. Susan Carole
Called Into Communion: A Paradigm Shift In Holiness Theology, B. Susan Carole
CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation argues that current problems in Nazarene holiness theology can be traced to a person-centered theological approach, which was introduced into theological reflection and practice during the Nineteenth Century Holiness Movement. Subjectivism has resulted in articulations of holiness doctrine that over-value the human role in religious experience and obscure the primacy of grace. These problems can be overcome by an articulation of holiness doctrine from the standpoint of its transcendent goalfullness in divine-human communion. Fullness of communion is divine-human fellowship characterized by the full actualization of divine Lordship and wholehearted human devotion, through the fullness of the Holy Spirit. …

Johannes Piscator (1526-1625) And The Consequent Development Of The Doctrine Of The Imputation Of Christ's Active Obedience, Heber Carlos De Campos Júnior
CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations
Though the forensic understanding of imputation of Christ's righteousness was consistently asserted by the Reformers, the discussion around what constituted this imputed righteousness was a Post Reformation debate. However, secondary literature is often unaware of the development of such doctrine when they assert that early Reformed figures such as John Calvin, Zacharias Ursinus and Caspar Olevianus were either in favor or opposed to the doctrine of the imputation of Christ's active obedience. These labels are preferable if attributed to those who responded to Johannes Piscator's disagreement with Theodore Beza's theology of imputation of righteousness, this being the debate which sparked …
The Mythos Of Sin: C. S. Lewis, The Genesis Fall, And The Modern Mood, Jeremy G. Grinnell
The Mythos Of Sin: C. S. Lewis, The Genesis Fall, And The Modern Mood, Jeremy G. Grinnell
CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation wrestles with the question how to profitably and theologically handle the Fall narrative of Genesis 3 once it has been classified as “myth,” as was the conclusion of the Formgeschichte school. The dissertation begins by establishing the theological conversation of the mid-twentieth century, which marks a zenith in the discussion. Beginning with a survey of the traditional interpretation of the narrative as historical account, which dominated pre-Enlightenment churchly thought, the survey then summarizes the change of tenor that Enlightenment and higher critical voices brought to the question. The survey concludes with consideration of Reinhold Niebuhr, Karl Barth, and …
John Edwards (1637-1716) On The Freedom Of The Will: The Debate On The Relation Between Divine Necessity And Human Freedom In Late Seventeenth Century And Early Eighteenth Century England., Jeongmo Yoo
CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation examines John Edwards’ (1637-1716) doctrine of free choice, focusing on his understanding of the relation between divine necessity and human freedom as an illustration of the way Reformed theologians of the late seventeenth and the early eighteenth century developed their ideas of human free choice. Even though free choice is an important theme in the history of Reformed theology, Reformed teaching on free choice has gained much less attention by modern scholars than other Reformed themes such as faith, grace and predestination. Moreover, the traditional Reformed doctrine of free choice has been frequently criticized as metaphysical or philosophical …
The Problem With Health Measurement., Stefan J. Cano, Jeremy C. Hobart
The Problem With Health Measurement., Stefan J. Cano, Jeremy C. Hobart
Peninsula Medical School
In this review we discuss health measurement with a focus on psychometric methods and methodology. In particular, we examine some of the key issues currently facing the use of clinician and patient rating scales to measure the health outcomes of disease and treatment. We present three key facts and flag one crucial problem. First, the numbers generated by scales are increasingly used as the measurements of the central dependent variables upon which clinical decisions are frequently made. The rising profile of rating scales has significant implications for scale construction, evaluation, and selection, as well as for interpreting studies. Second, rating …

The Law Of The Census: How To Count, What To Count, Whom To Count, And Where To Count Them, Nathaniel Persily
Cardozo Law Review
The 2010 Census, like its predecessors, represented a momentous logistical and technological undertaking with far reaching consequences for political representation and allocation of public resources. It also promised to spawn a series of legal controversies over how to count people, what information the government should gather, which individuals truly "count" for purposes of the census, and where they should be counted. This Article explores these present and past controversies surrounding the census. The issues of "sampling" and "statistical adjustment" pervaded much of the legal commentary and caselaw concerning the census for the past twenty years. The undercount will continue to …

The 2011 redistricting will provide some interesting challenges for minority voting rights. How can we preserve minority electoral opportunities and gains in the wake of Bartlett v. Strickland and Georgia v. Ashcroft? What is the impact on future voting rights litigation and are coalition district claims viable as an opportunity to continue the electoral gains made since the passage of the Voting Rights Act? Are majority-minority districts safe from legislative backsliding? The Supreme Court's construed admonitions against race-conscious redistricting in recent cases may become cautionary tales. This Article discusses the central role the Voting Rights Act should play in …
