Acute Paraplegia After Spinal Manipulation: A Casereport, Kao-Chih Chen, Yao-Jen Chen Dec 2011

Acute Paraplegia After Spinal Manipulation: A Casereport, Kao-Chih Chen, Yao-Jen Chen

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

This is a casereport about a 53-year-old female patient with a history of chronic back pain, suffered from complete paraplegia shortly after spinal manipulation. CT and MRI images consistently showed ossification of the ligamenta flava in conjunction with bilateral facet joints hypertrophy at the T10-11, T11-12 and L1-2 levels. Spinal cord injury with T12 paraplegia ASIA-A was thus diagnosed. Posterior laminectomy at the T10, T11, L1 and L2 levels and interbody fusion from T10 to L2 spines for fixation were performed. After rehabilitation, the patient regained some activities of daily living despite complete paraplegia. To raise public awareness, our report …

Local Negotiation With Heterogeneous Groundwater Users, Gordon C. Rausser, Susan Stratton Sayre, Leo K. Simon Dec 2011

Local Negotiation With Heterogeneous Groundwater Users, Gordon C. Rausser, Susan Stratton Sayre, Leo K. Simon

Economics: Faculty Publications

This paper assesses the political implications of intra-aquifer heterogeneity in the benefits and costs of optimal groundwater management. We use simulation modeling to predict groundwater extraction regimes under two alternative local decision-making structures and compare these structures to optimal management. Local collective action performs poorly when the intra-aquifer disparity in the potential gains is large. Moreover, large intra-aquifer disparity is generally associated with large potential gains. As a result, local collective action is unlikely to be successful in capturing the largest welfare gains. Individual subregions within a groundwater basin almost always benefit most from political structures whose outcomes diverge from …

Governance Role For Maintaining Competitiveness Of Korean Shipbuilding Industry, Dong Hwang Hwang Dec 2011

Governance Role For Maintaining Competitiveness Of Korean Shipbuilding Industry, Dong Hwang Hwang

World Maritime University Dissertations

Although the global shipbuilding market faces a severe recession due to the shrinkage of international trade, the shipbuilding industry in Korea has contributed to economic growth and employment. Influences of government on the shipbuilding industry have dimmed and every stakeholder manages their own way without direction from the perspective of national interest. On the other hand, the mandatory reduction of CO2 emissions from ships was adopted by IMO in 2011. All possible technologies for energy efficient ships would be considered and major shipbuilding countries have invested in relevant R&D activities. Korean giant shipbuilders have some key technologies for improving fuel …

Ann Application In Maritime Industry : Baltic Dry Index Forecasting & Optimization Of The Number Of Container Cranes, Han Cui Dec 2011

Ann Application In Maritime Industry : Baltic Dry Index Forecasting & Optimization Of The Number Of Container Cranes, Han Cui

World Maritime University Dissertations

This dissertation is a study of dry bulk freight index forecasting and port planning, both based on Artificial Neural network application. First the dry bulk market is reviewed, and the reason for the high fluctuation of freight rates through the demand-supply mechanism is examined. Due to the volatile BDI, the traditional linear regression forecasting method cannot guarantee the performance of forecasting, but ANN overcomes this difficulty and gives better performance especially in a short time. Besides, in order to improve the performance of ANN further, wavelet is introduced to pre-process the BDI data. But when the noise (high frequency parts) …

Quantification Of The Impacts Of Water Hyacinth On Riparian Communities In Cameroon And Assessment Of An Appropriate Method Of Control : The Case Of The Wouri River Basin, Jenette Tifuh. Mujingni Epse Cho

World Maritime University Dissertations

Some plants, when transported to non-endemic areas undergo reproduction and rapid growth and will out-compete native plants and become weeds. These weeds then become troublesome giving rise to socioeconomic and environmental impacts. Water hyacinth (Eicchornia crassipes), one of such weeds is often considered the world’s worst invasive aquatic species of weed, indigenous to the Amazon Basin of South America and has spread over the years to various areas in Africa and Asia. This dissertation analyses the problem of water hyacinth infestation in the Wouri River Basin, done through the quantification of its socio-economic and environmental impacts on riparian communities. It …

Strategi Foresight Untuk Mengubah Perspektif Ex Ante Ke Perspektif Ex Post Dalam Proses Keputusan Auditor Independen, I Made Narsa Dec 2011

Strategi Foresight Untuk Mengubah Perspektif Ex Ante Ke Perspektif Ex Post Dalam Proses Keputusan Auditor Independen, I Made Narsa

Jurnal Akuntansi dan Keuangan Indonesia

This study is intended to test the effect of outcome on independent auditors’ decision, and whether the use of foresight decision aids can alter auditors’ ex-ante perspective to ex-post perspective in decision process. We use experimental design involving 206 undergraduate accounting students. They are distributed into four groups: foresight, hindsight, foresight+single outcome, and foresight-multiple outcome. We found negative outcome affects independent auditors’ decision, and foresight strategies effectively alter independent auditor’s perspective from ex-ante to ex-post perspective. We also found that in decision making process auditors consider negative information more than positive information, which reflects auditors’ conservative attitude. The results of …

Pengaruh Modal Intelektual Dan Pengungkapan Modal Intelektual Pada Nilai Perusahaan Yang Melakukan Initial Public Offering, Wahyu Widarjo

Jurnal Akuntansi dan Keuangan Indonesia

The objective of this research is to investigate the influence of intellectual capital performance and intellectual capital disclosure on the value of the firm after an initial public offering (IPO). The Value Added Intellectual Coefficient (VAICTM) method is used to measure of intellectual capital. Intellectual capital disclosure in this research is measure with Zingh and Zahn (2008) index, and value firm is determined by market value of the firm. The result of the analysis fails to support the first hypothesis that intellectual capital is affected to firm’s values. The result probably is an indication that market is incapable to assess …

World Maritime University Dissertations

This dissertation is a study on Ship’s routeing and Port zoning Audit Scheme (SPAS) for eradicating or reducing risky circumstantial factors of marine casualties and incidents in coastal waters. It aims to show methods of preventing marine accident from the human element, and to discuss the further development for the maritime safety system of the Republic of Korea as the world’s first compulsory scientific audit scheme on ship’s routeing and port zoning.
