Local Television Coverage Of A Mall Shooting: Separating Facts From Fiction In Breaking News, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt Dec 2011

Local Television Coverage Of A Mall Shooting: Separating Facts From Fiction In Breaking News, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt

Communication Faculty Publications

Local TV news emphasizes the earliest stage of crimes because ‘‘breaking news’’ is fresh, dramatic and visual. A qualitative analysis was conducted using a comprehensive set of recordings of the first three-and-a-half hours of local television news coverage in Omaha, Nebraska. This study identified a series of ongoing issues that have important implications for newsroom decision-makers. Local television news used charged and dramatic language, such as that shooting victims were ‘‘fighting for their lives.’’ Reporters and news managers find themselves in the middle of a struggle between two options: remaining a distant and objective observer of events, or connecting with …

Brief Assessment Of Schizotypy: Developing Short Forms Of The Wisconsin Schizotypy Scales, Beate P. Winterstein, Paul J. Silvia, Thomas R. Kwapil, James C. Kaufman, Roni Reiter-Palmon, Benjamin Wigert Dec 2011

Brief Assessment Of Schizotypy: Developing Short Forms Of The Wisconsin Schizotypy Scales, Beate P. Winterstein, Paul J. Silvia, Thomas R. Kwapil, James C. Kaufman, Roni Reiter-Palmon, Benjamin Wigert

Psychology Faculty Publications

The Wisconsin Schizotypy Scales—the Perceptual Aberration, Magical Ideation, Physical Anhedonia, and Revised Social Anhedonia Scales—have been used extensively since their development in the 1970s and 1980s. Based on psychometric analyses using item response theory, the present work presents 15-item short forms of each scale. In addition to being briefer, the short forms omit items with high differential item functioning. Based on data from a sample of young adults (n = 1144), the short forms have strong internal consistency, and they mirror effects found for the longer scales. They thus appear to be a good option for researchers interested in …

Selected Characteristics For Nebraska Legislative Districts From The 2006‐2010 American Community Survey, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)

Past Publications

On December 8, 2011, the U.S. Census Bureau released five‐year American Community Survey (ACS) estimates for the combined years of 2006 through 2010, making available social, economic, housing and demographic statistics for every community in Nebraska and the nation. Also available are estimates for Nebraska’s Legislative Districts.

The data are based on a rolling national sample survey mailed to about 3 million addresses each year, resulting in nearly 2 million final interviews each year from 2006 through 2010. By pooling several years of survey responses, the ACS can generate detailed statistical portraits of smaller geographies such as legislative districts. The …

The Affects Of Manipulatives On Sight Word Recognition, Meghan Huver Dec 2011

The Affects Of Manipulatives On Sight Word Recognition, Meghan Huver

Education Masters

The following study examines the affect manipulatives have on sight word recognition. Data was collected in a variety of ways throughout this action research project, which include observations, interviews, audio recordings, questionnaires, as well as authentic work completed by the participant. This study reveals that the use of hands-on materials increase one’s sight word recognition, motivation, and engagement. As a result, teachers should incorporate manipulatives and educational games into their curriculum. These tools will motivate students and assist them in learning new sight words.

The Effect Of Amylase Supplementation With Low-Starch Rations: Effects On Milk Production And Feed Consumption, Alfred Eaton Dec 2011

The Effect Of Amylase Supplementation With Low-Starch Rations: Effects On Milk Production And Feed Consumption, Alfred Eaton

Dairy Science

The objective of this trial was to determine if there was an increase in milk production or a decrease in feed consumption by dairy cattle when fed an exogenous rumen-resistant amylase, named RumiStar. High feed prices have caused dairymen to look for new ways to be more efficient. Commercial feed additives have been proposed as opportunities to improve efficiency. In our study a minimum of eighty multiparous Holstein cows were assigned to each of two pens, with a minimum of forty cows in each. Cows that completed their lactation during the study period were replaced with fresh cows to keep …

Death, Racial Reconciliation, And The Mission Of The Church – Baldwin’S Perception, Jon Nilson Dec 2011

Death, Racial Reconciliation, And The Mission Of The Church – Baldwin’S Perception, Jon Nilson

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

Delivered during the 2010 Annual Meeting, Nilson explores novelist James Baldwin’s reflections on the truth about racism and white supremacy. Whiteness, for Baldwin, functions as a kind of idolatry intimately connected with the fear of death. Although Baldwin never attempted to provide evidence for this observation, NIlson reveals a compelling proof through fascinating psychological experiments in Terror Management Theory (TMT). According to TMT, consciousness of one’s mortality – “mortality salience” – often results in a heightened tolerance of prejudice and bias. For a Church that seems far more concerned with keeping its white members untroubled and content, the price for …

Malcolm X And The Limits Of “Authentically Black And Truly Catholic”: A Research Project On Black Radicalism And Black Catholic Faith, Bryan N. Massingale Dec 2011

Malcolm X And The Limits Of “Authentically Black And Truly Catholic”: A Research Project On Black Radicalism And Black Catholic Faith, Bryan N. Massingale

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

Based on the talk he delivered during the 2010 Annual Meeting, Massingale here tackles head‐on the unvoiced questions with which most of us have struggled at some point our careers and ministries. He begins by unveiling the conflicted ramifications of ‘authentically black and truly Catholic’. Echoing Copeland’s reference in Volume IV to the price that black scholars and theologians must pay to “speak and act and live in truth” (p. 75), Massingale explores Malcolm X’s call for Black Nationalism and its synthesis and coexistence with Integrationism in current Black Catholicism. Finally, he asks a series of haunting questions about what …

Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium

Here Mosely reflects on sankofa as a value embraced by womanist theologians in terms of its philosophical meaning and its practice. She presents a sankofa ethics that emphasizes the importance of protecting one another, especially the young, resisting all that demeans black people and black life, and living lives of justice.

Review: 'God's Own Party: The Making Of The Christian Right', William Vance Trollinger Dec 2011

Review: 'God's Own Party: The Making Of The Christian Right', William Vance Trollinger

History Faculty Publications

There has been no end of predictions that the demise of the Religious Right is imminent. Over the past three decades, proof of its impending collapse has included the televangelist scandals, Pat Robertson’s failure to secure the Republican presidential nomination, the election and re-election of Bill Clinton, and the emergence of “young” evangelicals who refuse to toe the Religious Right line (this one keeps popping up).

The latest version involves the notion that economically focused libertarians of the Tea Party will inevitably find themselves in heated conflict with evangelical and fundamentalist social conservatives, thus challenging the power of the Religious …

The Tetrafluoroborate Salt Of 4-Methoxybenzyl N-2-(Dimethylamino)Ethyl-N-Nitrosocarbamate: Synthesis, Crystal Structure And Dft Calculations, Helene Hedian, Vladimir Benin Dec 2011

The Tetrafluoroborate Salt Of 4-Methoxybenzyl N-2-(Dimethylamino)Ethyl-N-Nitrosocarbamate: Synthesis, Crystal Structure And Dft Calculations, Helene Hedian, Vladimir Benin

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The tetrafluoroborate salt of 4-methoxybenzyl N-2-(dimethylamino)ethyl-N-nitrosocarbamate was prepared in two steps, via the corresponding carbamate. Its crystal structure is monoclinic, space group P21/c. The unit cell dimensions are: a = 19.499(8) Å, b = 5.877(3) Å, c = 15.757(7) Å, α = 90°, β = 110.019(7)°, γ = 90°, V = 1696.5(12) Å3, Z = 4. The structure exhibits an unexpected, pseudo-gauche conformation with respect to the C2–C3 bond, due to a stabilizing hydrogen bond between the carbonyl oxygen (O1) and the hydrogen atom at the trialkylammonium center (H3n), with a distance between them of …

Small-Scale Hybrid Alternative Energy Maximizer For Wind Turbines And Photovoltaic Panels, Ross Kerley Dec 2011

Small-Scale Hybrid Alternative Energy Maximizer For Wind Turbines And Photovoltaic Panels, Ross Kerley

HIM 1990-2015

This thesis describes the creation of a small-scale Hybrid Power System (HPS) that maximizes energy from a wind turbine and photovoltaic array. Small-scale HPS are becoming an increasingly viable energy solution as fossil fuel prices rise and more electricity is needed in remote areas. Modern HPS typically employ wind speed sensors and three power stages to extract maximum power. Modern systems also use passive rectifiers to convert AC from the wind turbine to DC that is usable by power electronics. This passive system inefficiently wastes power and introduces damaging harmonic noise to the wind turbine. The HPS described in this …

The Role Of Judges In The Development Of Mixed Legal Systems: The Case Of Malta, Biagio Andò Dec 2011

The Role Of Judges In The Development Of Mixed Legal Systems: The Case Of Malta, Biagio Andò

Journal of Civil Law Studies

Mixed jurisdictions that are a historical by-product of the convergence of common and civil law traditions may give the impression of entities with stable and fixed traits. Upon a closer look however, this impression is found to be inaccurate. An analysis of court judgements is the best way to evaluate how these legal systems develop. This paper focuses on Maltese private law, which is firmly rooted in the French legal tradition. Some issues concerning private law will be discussed solely because they are significant examples of the relevance that judgements have for the development of the system, notwithstanding the fact …

Rethinking Maltese Legal Hybridity: A Chimeric Illusion Or A Healthy Grafted European Law Mixture?, Kevin Aquilina Dec 2011

Rethinking Maltese Legal Hybridity: A Chimeric Illusion Or A Healthy Grafted European Law Mixture?, Kevin Aquilina

Journal of Civil Law Studies

Although Maltese Law is traditionally classified as a mixed system of Civil Law and Common Law, this paper suggests that it is more appropriate to do away with this designation, which is not entirely exact, and instead call it what it really is, namely, a ‘European’ legal system.

The paper proposes a typology of the Maltese legal system divided into nine distinct phases which contain traces of Civil Law, Common Law, Customary Law, Canon Law, Maltese Autochthonous Law, European Union Law, Regional Law (Mediterranean Law and, in its widest sense, European Law), Public International Law and elements of foreign national …

From Capitulations To Unequal Treaties: The Matter Of An Extraterritorial Jurisdiction In The Ottoman Empire, Eliana Augusti Dec 2011

From Capitulations To Unequal Treaties: The Matter Of An Extraterritorial Jurisdiction In The Ottoman Empire, Eliana Augusti

Journal of Civil Law Studies

In the nineteenth century, justice in the Ottoman Empire appeared to international jurists deeply corrupted and far from the Western model. European consular jurisdictions, as in the past, solved this embarrassment in the prevalent and private interest of Western States in order to control the Mediterranean area. This perpetrated abjuration to recognize an autonomous and sovereign Ottoman administration of justice in civil or criminal cases in which foreigners were involved continued, in spite of the fact that the Porte provided excellent examples of intersection, reception and appropriation of foreign models to construct a new legal system, and to transform society. …

The Mediterranean Legacy In The Concept Of Sovereignty: A Case Of Legal And Philosophical Hybridity, Alessio Lo Giudice Dec 2011

The Mediterranean Legacy In The Concept Of Sovereignty: A Case Of Legal And Philosophical Hybridity, Alessio Lo Giudice

Journal of Civil Law Studies

The ideas of centralized political power and monarchy that emerged from the Mediterranean world are among the most important philosophical bases for the concept of sovereignty. My thesis is that the normative idea of an absolute, independent, and exclusive center of power originates in a complex case of philosophical hybridity. It is the outcome of the alternation between the conception of the Sovereign as representing the supreme power (the indirect theory) and the conception of the Sovereign as directly containing that power (the direct theory). The former conception is usually associated with the history of Western political culture and the …

A Jurilinguistic Study Of The Trilingual Civil Code Of Québec, Jimena Andino Dorato Dec 2011

A Jurilinguistic Study Of The Trilingual Civil Code Of Québec, Jimena Andino Dorato

Journal of Civil Law Studies

The author seeks, with this article, to introduce jurilinguistics as a growing discipline that could contribute a new and …
