This study applied Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) as a framework to develop a strategy instructional module for Chinese EFL learners at pre-university level in Malaysia with an aim to explore the potentials of SRL to enhance learners' strategy use, motivational beliefs (i.e., self-efficacy) and performance in vocabulary learning. With a focus on three quality criteria (i.e., validity, practicality, and effectiveness), a developmental research approach was conducted in three phases, i.e., needs analysis, design and development, implementation and evaluation of the module. The findings presented here focus on a classroom trial of the module with 10 Chinese EFL learners to examine the …

This paper examines the impact of economic factors on bilateral trade flows between Malaysia and the Gee through estimations of panel data using a gravity model. In particular, the paper compares the determinants of bilateral trade between Malaysia and two regions, the non-traditional Gulf alliance and the traditional ASEAN counterpart, to provide insights for leveraging opportunities through trade with the former. The gravity estimates imply the importance of size effects, similarities in GDP and differences in factor endowments as drivers of trade flows between Malaysia and the Gee, underlying the fact that inter-industry trade dominates these flows. The opposite holds …

Neural Network-Based Face Detection With Partial Face Pattern, Sinan Naji, Roziati Zainuddin, Hamid A. Jallb, Masoud Abou Zaid, Amar Eldouber
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
In this paper, we present a neural networkbased method to detect frontal faces in grayscale images under unconstrained scene conditions such as the presence of complex background and uncontrolled illumination. The system is composed of two stages: threshold-based segmentation and neural network-based classifier. Image segmentation using thresholding is used to reduce the search space. Artificial neural network classifier would then be applied only to regions of the image which are marked as candidate face regions. The ANN classification phase crops small windows of an image, and decides whether each window contains a face. Partial face template is used instead of …

Making Sense When It Matters Most: Leadership In Extremis, Deirdre Dixon
Making Sense When It Matters Most: Leadership In Extremis, Deirdre Dixon
Student Scholarship
Leading during in extremis situations when lives are in peril remains one of the least addressed areas of leadership research. In particular, although lives may depend on it, little is known about how leaders in in extremis situations make sense of their situation and communicate that sense to others. Because most of the literature on sensemaking and sensegiving in in extremis situations is theoretical, we sought empirical evidence of how it proceeds in actual practice. To address this gap in the literature, a qualitative study was conducted based on semi-structured interviews with thirty U.S. Army leaders at West Point who …

Impedance-Based Detection Of Tissue Using A Multi-Electrode Device, Shane Killian Fleshman
Impedance-Based Detection Of Tissue Using A Multi-Electrode Device, Shane Killian Fleshman
Master's Theses
Melanoma skin cancer is the abnormal growth of the melanocytes – the pigmented cells located in the epidermis. The current gold standard diagnostic technique for determining whether a lesion is cancerous involves subjectively examining suspicious lesions and performing an invasive biopsy to confirm melanoma. This method may neglect some lesions or cause scarring from biopsies that turn out to be benign. Thus, impedance-based detection using a multi-electrode device was investigated as a noninvasive technique to diagnose melanoma skin cancer. The multi-electrode device was designed with 8 equally spaced Ag/AgCl electrodes surrounding one central electrode at a 5 mm radius. The …
