Transformational Leadership For Conflict Management Between Leaders And Employees, Yang Guo Sep 2011

Transformational Leadership For Conflict Management Between Leaders And Employees, Yang Guo

Lingnan Theses

This study empirically investigates the dynamics and outcomes of leader-member conflict. It validates the values of cooperative conflict and damages of competitive conflict between leaders and employees, testing the effectiveness and universality of Deutsch's (1973) cooperation and competition theory. By bridging leadership and conflict management literature, it also identifies the role of transformational leadership in managing conflict effectively. Specifically, transformational leadership induces cooperative conflict and undermines competitive conflict between leaders and employees, which in turn increases task performance and leader effectiveness.

A total of 112 interviews were conducted in mainland China from 2010 to 2011. Results of structural equation modeling …

The Association Between Consumer Debt And The Likelihood Of Divorce, Jeffrey P. Dew Sep 2011

The Association Between Consumer Debt And The Likelihood Of Divorce, Jeffrey P. Dew

Faculty Publications

As part of the Center for Financial Security’s 2010 symposium, this study examined the association between consumer debt and divorce. Longitudinal data from the National Survey of Families and Households (N = 4,574 couples) indicated that consumer debt was positively associated with divorce. Financial conflict completely mediated this association for both husbands and wives and marital satisfaction also completely mediated the association for wives. These findings suggest that when families take financial steps to secure their financial stability they may also be taking steps to secure their relationship stability.

Children's Development In Identifying The Intentions Of Others: The Influence Of Social Cues And Outcome Severity, Vincent Grande

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The current study examined age-related changes in how well young children could identify other children’s intentions in social situations. This relation was examined for children’s judgments of others’ intentions in situations where one of two social cues was present and when negative outcomes were either severe or minor. Participants were 94 children between the ages of 4 and 7 years who were recruited from the community. Participants watched several short videos of two children interacting and stated whether one of the children acted on purpose or by accident. Children’s correct judgments of others’ intentions increased with age. A stronger association …

Early Maladaptive Schemas And Negative Life Events In The Prediction Of Depression And Anxiety, Lindsay Anmuth Sep 2011

Early Maladaptive Schemas And Negative Life Events In The Prediction Of Depression And Anxiety, Lindsay Anmuth

Theses and Dissertations

This study tested the relationships between Young's (1990, 2003) model of Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMSs), negative life events occurring over the past 4 months, depressive symptoms, and anxious symptoms. We also replicated a design testing the ability of EMSs, negative life events, and their interaction to predict depressive and anxious symptoms and extended the design to include specific categories of negative life events (interpersonal and achievement). Results of this study showed that EMSs are predictive of depressive and anxious symptoms, but that negative life events account for a greater prediction. The EMS model was just as highly associated with and …

Capturing The Judiciary: Carhart And The Undue Burden Standard, Khiara Bridges Sep 2011

Capturing The Judiciary: Carhart And The Undue Burden Standard, Khiara Bridges

Faculty Scholarship

In Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey, the Supreme Court replaced the trimester framework, first articulated nineteen years earlier in Roe v. Wade, with a new test for determining the constitutionality of abortion regulations — the “undue burden standard.” The Court’s 2007 decision in Gonzales v. Carhart was its most recent occasion to use the undue burden standard, as the Court was called upon to ascertain the constitutionality of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, a federal statute proscribing certain methods of performing second- and third-trimester abortions. A majority of the Court held that the regulation was constitutionally permissible, finding …

Bergson And Levinas On The Time Of Art, Katherine Graham Sep 2011

Bergson And Levinas On The Time Of Art, Katherine Graham

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Emmanuel Levinas and Henri Bergson have two very different approaches to the topic of aesthetics. Yet both have made unique contributions to the philosophy of art, and, specifically, to questions surrounding the temporal nature of art. This project attempts to read these two thinkers together over the question of the time of art. In doing so, this paper aims to discover whether art has its own kind of time, distinct from both the objectively measurable time favored by science, and the variable, subjective time vividly described by both Levinas and Bergson. This exploration will also seek to discover what, if …

Motivational Issues Of Faculty In Saudi Arabia, Peter John Anthony, Akram Abdulcader Sep 2011

Motivational Issues Of Faculty In Saudi Arabia, Peter John Anthony, Akram Abdulcader

Higher Learning Research Communications

This study focused on the factors that affect motivation of faculty in Saudi Arabia. It included two surveys and open-ended queries to a focus group of five academic managers and 25 faculty members of varying nationalities, rank, and institutes in Saudi Arabia. The research showed that the faculties in Saudi Arabia’s higher education industry feel disconnected from the program development. The faculty members did not feel motivated to participate in the development and improvement of the academic program due to: (a) lack of monetary and non-monetary incentives, (b) management not involving faculty in decision-making, and (c) lack of recognition and …
