Genetics Of Polyphenol Oxidase (Ppo) Activity In Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L.), Somrudee Onto
Genetics Of Polyphenol Oxidase (Ppo) Activity In Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L.), Somrudee Onto
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The enzyme activity of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) in grain is regarded as a major factor in time-dependent darkening and discoloration of wheat food products during processing or storage. The darkening phenomena of products reduce the quality of products and affect consumer acceptance. Breeding wheat cultivars with low PPO activity is the best way to reduce the undesirable darkening. The low PPO line PI 117635 was crossed to two low PPO wheats from Idaho, IDO580 and IDO377s to determine whether matings between wheats with low levels of grain PPO would result in complementation, and lines with lower or nil PPO would …

Alternative Certification: A Research Brief, Diane Hirshberg
Alternative Certification: A Research Brief, Diane Hirshberg
CAEPR Reports
Alternative teacher certification (ATC) encompasses a broad range of programs that prepare teachers in non-traditional, accelerated ways (Suell and Piotrowski 2007). The number of teachers prepared through alternative routes has increased considerably in the past decade. As of 2011, 16% of public school teachers nationwide had entered the profession through some kind of alternative program, and in the last five years, 40% of new hires have come through ATC programs (Feistritzer 2011). In this brief I offer a short overview of research on the outcomes of alternative certification programs compared with traditional certification, summarize findings about what makes for effective …
Do Different Styles Of Self-Monitoring Yield Different Outcomes In Ego Depletion And Anxiety?, Katelyn Brittany Ealer
Do Different Styles Of Self-Monitoring Yield Different Outcomes In Ego Depletion And Anxiety?, Katelyn Brittany Ealer
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Different styles of self-monitoring, Public Performing and Other-directed, may result in different levels of ego depletion and anxiety after an ego depleting self-presentation task. To test this idea, undergraduate psychology students were recruited and deceived into believing that they were being monitored by trained researchers for competency so as to activate the ego depleting self-presentational strategy of competence. The predictions that as self-monitoring increases, ego depletion increases, that Other-directed self-monitoring predicts ego depletion more than Public Performing self-monitoring, that Public Performing self-monitoring predicts ego depletion controlling for Extroversion and Other-directed self-monitoring predicts ego depletion controlling for Neuroticism, and that ego …
Exploring The Impact Of Classified Staff Interactions On The Student Experience: A Multiple Case Study Approach, Mary Ann Schmitt
Exploring The Impact Of Classified Staff Interactions On The Student Experience: A Multiple Case Study Approach, Mary Ann Schmitt
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
This qualitative multiple case study explored front-line classified staff interactions with students as a possible strategy for increasing student success. The study was based on the premise that too few students stay at a community college long enough to achieve their academic goals. Therefore, college leaders must identify new strategies to increase student retention and success. A literature review revealed positive student experiences increase the likelihood of student persistence. Since classified staff members interact with students throughout the college, the author examined their interactions as one potential strategy to increase the likelihood of student success.
The study explored classified staff …

Investigating Factors Associated With Burglary Crime Analysis Using Logistic Regression Modeling, Daniel Antolos
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
This study conducted a logistic regression to determine the relationship of factors associated with burglary to determine the variables necessary to predict criminal activity. Predictors utilized in the study; included time of day, day of week, connectors, barriers, and repeat victimization. These predictors were all incorporated to develop a model that would best predict burglary activity as it relates from a determine epicenter of activity. The predictors selected have all be shown, through research to be significant, characteristics of activity as they relate to burglary but have not been incorporated together to develop a significant model. The model compared the …
The Effects Of Observers’ Expectations And The Probability Of A Change Occurring On Change Detection Performance, Robert A. Brown
The Effects Of Observers’ Expectations And The Probability Of A Change Occurring On Change Detection Performance, Robert A. Brown
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The change probability effect is a term coined by Beck et al. (2004) and it suggests that changes that are expected or "probable" are detected more easily than changes that are unexpected or "improbable". This research study investigates the change probability effect and the differences between observers who are looking for changes and those who are unaware that changes may exist. The results suggest that observers who are not expecting a change to occur are more likely to detect an improbable change than a probable change. The findings from this study have real world applications and also have implications for …

Shule Ya Uhuru: The "Modern Strivers" And D.C.'S Eastern High School Freedom Annex, Ari Pomerantz , '12
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
This research paper examines the organizing work of “The Modern Strivers”, a group of black high-school students from Washington D.C.’s Eastern Public High School, between the years of 1967-1969. Following in the legacy of the Black Freedom Struggle’s democratic organizing tradition and harnessing the creativity and intellectual exuberance of the late 1960’s surging Black Nationalism, the Strivers designed and established their own semi-autonomous Freedom School, while continuing to fight for relevant curricula and greater black community control at Eastern High. The Strivers’ organizing demonstrates that youth of color were key thinkers and actors within the Black Power movement of Washington, …

The Impact Of Obesity On Reproduction In Women., Lulu A. Al-Nuaim
The Impact Of Obesity On Reproduction In Women., Lulu A. Al-Nuaim
Saudi Medical Journal
Obesity can impact on reproductive functions by causing hormonal imbalance and ovulatory dysfunction. Furthermore, obesity is associated with a range of adverse health consequences. There is a tight coupling between the reproductive system and energy balance. Obesity results from chronic imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure, and therefore changes in energy expenditure impact on the reproductive system. Physical activity, through its effect on energy expenditure, plays an imperative role in maintaining energy balance and thus improving health. It is therefore recommended that weight loss is the best and the cheapest therapy for infertile obese women.

College Students’ Negotiation Of Privilege In A Community-Based Violence Prevention Project, Bet S. Catlett, Amira Proweller
Scholarship of Engagement
Recent scholarship on service-learning has departed from examination of more traditional models and outcomes to explore how service-learning shapes students’ understanding of social change. This study builds on existing research to further interrogate the ways in which service-learning relates to power and privilege, specifically exploring how college students in a service-learning experience reflect on notions of privilege and how this informs their work with urban youth. Data was collected from 15 undergraduate student participants in a violence prevention program. Findings point to the potential that lies within change models of service-learning for students to reflect on the complex relationship among …

Mining Direct Antagonistic Communities In Explicit Trust Networks, David Lo, Didi Surian, Zhang Kuan, Ee Peng Lim
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
There has been a recent increase of interest in analyzing trust and friendship networks to gain insights about relationship dynamics among users. Many sites such as Epinions, Facebook, and other social networking sites allow users to declare trusts or friendships between different members of the community. In this work, we are interested in extracting direct antagonistic communities (DACs) within a rich trust network involving trusts and distrusts. Each DAC is formed by two subcommunities with trust relationships among members of each sub-community but distrust relationships across the sub-communities. We develop an efficient algorithm that could analyze large trust networks leveraging …

UF/IFAS Extension administrators and personnel should build upon the competencies new Extension agents possess when entering Extension.
The Removability Of Non-Citizen Parents And The Best Interests Of Citizen Children: How To Balance Competing Imperatives In The Context Of Removal Proceedings?, Patrick J. Glen
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The massive influx of illegal immigrants over the preceding decades has combined with the United States’ jus soli citizenship regime to produce a growing class of removable aliens: non-citizen parents of United States citizen children. The removability of parents obviously places the citizen children in the unfortunate position of having to leave their country of citizenship behind to accompany the parents, or arrange for living situations within the United States, perhaps with a relative, but be separated from their parents. The compelling interests raised by the removability of parents in such circumstances have given rise to distinct forms of relief …

This symposium highlighted the relevance of the cultural theory (CT) pioneered by anthropologists Mary Douglas, Steve Rayner, and Michael Thompson and political scientists Aaron Wildavsky and Richard Ellis for explaining political phenomena. In this concluding article, we suggest ways in which CT can be further tested and developed. First, we describe how the theory has been applied thus far and some of the achievements of these applications. Then, we examine some of the challenges revealed by this research. Finally, we discuss ways of applying CT that promise to help meet these challenges. These methods include nesting case studies and combining …
Using The Open Systems Perspective To Understand Critical Incidents, Denise D. P. Thompson
Using The Open Systems Perspective To Understand Critical Incidents, Denise D. P. Thompson
Publications and Research
At the end of its Fall 2010 conference, the Academy for Critical Incident Analysis (ACIA) called for the development of frameworks that would aid in the study and analysis of critical incidents. This paper responds to that call. The paper answers the question, “is it possible to construct a framework that is generic enough to encapsulate the essential components observed in all critical incidents?” The paper utilizes the open systems perspective to develop a conceptual framework to help us delineate and understand critical incidents and how they evolve. The paper presents examples to substantiate arguments made about the framework. The …

Eighty participants were randomized equally into experimental and control groups (n = 40 for each group). The control group only received usual detoxifi cation care, whereas the experimental group received usual care plus the intrinsic motivation program. This program …
Therapeutic Horseback Riding And Hippotherapy In Children With Cerebral Palsy, Sirinart Laibsirinon
Therapeutic Horseback Riding And Hippotherapy In Children With Cerebral Palsy, Sirinart Laibsirinon
Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine
Therapeutic horseback riding and hippotherapy in children with cerebral palsy can be considered as an adjunct to convention physical therapy, occupational therapy or other medical interventions. Impairments due to brain damage in children with cerebral palsy such as spasticity, muscle weakness and abnormal postural control result in abnormal movement and delayed gross motor function, compared to children with typical development. Sitting astride the horse while horse is moving facilitates head righting and equilibrium reaction. Balance will be highly required during riding the horse. Based on literature review, the improvements of the hippotherapy program of a 30-45 minutes/set, 1-2 sets/week within …
The Social Nature Of Male Suicide: A New Analytic Model, Daniel Coleman, John T. Casey
The Social Nature Of Male Suicide: A New Analytic Model, Daniel Coleman, John T. Casey
School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Suicide is one of the leading causes of male mortality. In nearly every country in the world, more males than females end their life by suicide. Previous research indicates male-specific risk factors include social factors such as being unmarried, low income, and unemployment. An analytic model of male suicide is developed, proposing that the traditional male gender role creates a culturally-conditioned narrowing of perceived options and cognitive rigidity when under stress that increases male suicide risk. Suicide prevention and intervention require recognition of the role of high traditional masculinity, situating individual explanations within a broader social context. Based on this …

Existing research suggests that individual personality differences are correlated with a user’s speed and accuracy in solving problems with different types of complex visualization systems. In this pa- per, we extend this research by isolating factors in personality traits as well as in the visualizations that could have contributed to the observed correlation. We focus on a personality trait known as “lo- cus of control,” which represents a person’s tendency to see them- selves as controlled by or in control of external events. To isolate variables of the visualization design, we control extraneous factors such as color, interaction, and labeling, …
Regulation For The Sake Of Appearance, Adam M. Samaha
Regulation For The Sake Of Appearance, Adam M. Samaha
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
Appearance is often given as a justification for decisions, including government decisions, but the logic of appearance arguments is not well theorized. This Article develops a framework for understanding and evaluating appearance-based justifications for government decisions. First, working definitions are offered to distinguish appearance from reality. Next, certain relationships between appearance and reality are singled out for attention. Sometimes reality is insulated from appearance, sometimes appearance helps drive reality over time, and sometimes appearance and reality collapse from the outset. Finally, sets of normative questions are suggested based on the supposed relationship between appearance and reality for a given situation. …
Talk About Talking About Constitutional Law, Adam M. Samaha
Talk About Talking About Constitutional Law, Adam M. Samaha
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
Constitutional theory branches into decision theory and discourse theory. The former concentrates on how constitutional decisions are or should be made, the latter on how constitutional issues are or should be discussed. For its part, originalism began as a method for resolving constitutional disagreement but it has migrated into discourse theory, as well. Jack Balkin’s “living originalism” illustrates the move. This essay examines inclusive versions of originalism like Balkin’s that permit many different answers to constitutional questions. The essay then suggests pathologies associated with loose constitutional discourse in general. For instance, a large domain for constitutional discourse can crowd out …

Collaborative Online Learning Of User Generated Content, Guangxia Li, Kuiyu Chang, Steven C. H. Hoi, Wenting Liu, Ramesh Jain
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We study the problem of online classification of user generated content, with the goal of efficiently learning to categorize content generated by individual user. This problem is challenging due to several reasons. First, the huge amount of user generated content demands a highly efficient and scalable classification solution. Second, the categories are typically highly imbalanced, i.e., the number of samples from a particular useful class could be far and few between compared to some others (majority class). In some applications like spam detection, identification of the minority class often has significantly greater value than that of the majority class. Last …

Fame Law: Requiring Proof Of National Fame In Trademark Law, Xuan-Thao Nguyen
Fame Law: Requiring Proof Of National Fame In Trademark Law, Xuan-Thao Nguyen
Cardozo Law Review
The public has always been infatuated with fame. Trademark law likewise has a long history of infatuation with fame. Protecting the fame embodied in a trademark against dilutive use by others has not been easy. The difficulty stems from the wording of the statute and judicial failure to understand the "fame" requirement. The fundamental question centers on what level of fame is required for the property-like protection against subsequent uses that dilute the famous trademark. This Article argues for national fame to be the requisite requirement for property-like anti-dilution protection under trademark law. The Article recommends that the proof of …
