The Effects Of Caffeine And Expectancy On Short Term Memory, Sara J. O'Brien Oct 2011

The Effects Of Caffeine And Expectancy On Short Term Memory, Sara J. O'Brien

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Although caffeine is the most widely used drug in the world, research on the effects of caffeine on mental performance tasks (especially short term memory tasks) is inconclusive. One possible explanation for this limited understanding is the lack of studies accounting for participant expectancy surrounding caffeine. This study examined the effects of caffeine dosage (0mg, 200mg, and 400mg) and expectancy related to past caffeine use (positive, negative) on short term memory span task. A two-way Analysis of Variance showed that the two independent variables (caffeine dose and expectancy), did not significantly influence the short term memory span score. However, the …

In the fall of 2011, the Environmental Studies capstone class led by Professor Rutherford Platt was asked to write Gettysburg College’s first Sustainability Plan. The goal of the plan was to develop specific sustainable practices for the campus that were related to the three pillars of sustainability: economic, social, and environmental, and how integrating diligent sustainable practices into each of these respected pillars will result in a more conscious campus, community, and future. In 2010, Gettysburg College turned to the Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System (STARS) to quantify the institution’s sustainability efforts, providing a self-check mechanism to encourage sustainability …

The New Super-Charged Pat (Power Of Appointment Trust), Wendy G. Gerzog Oct 2011

The New Super-Charged Pat (Power Of Appointment Trust), Wendy G. Gerzog

All Faculty Scholarship

This article proposes to repeal the QTIP provisions in order to collect revenue now for transfers that are essentially transfers to third parties and not to the decedent's spouse. Because there are advantages of increased flexibility attendant to a QTIP as opposed to a PAT, this article proposes to take those repealed QTIP benefits and attach them to the PAT, which would greatly enhance that marital deduction trust form. A super-charged PAT would thereby be able to preserve the decedent's GST tax exemption (like a reverse QTIP), create a decedent's by-pass trust by allowing a PAT (or a partial PAT) …

A Cross Sectional Study Of Pre-Service Teacher Efficacy Throughout The Training Years, Stuart Woodcock Oct 2011

A Cross Sectional Study Of Pre-Service Teacher Efficacy Throughout The Training Years, Stuart Woodcock

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Teachers’ judgments in their ability to motivate students and promote learning can play a vital role in determining a student’s performance in the classroom and once a belief has been held for a long time, it can become difficult to change. Utilising a sample of 467 beginner and final year pre-service teachers training to become primary (elementary) and secondary teachers, the aim of this study was to examine to what extent pre-service teachers’ level of teacher efficacy changed during their teacher training years. Results showed that the training courses for primary school teachers appeared to have no influence on teacher …

Classroom Behaviour Management Preparation In Undergraduate Primary Teacher Education In Australia : A Web-Based Investigation., Sue C. O'Neill, Jennifer Stephenson Oct 2011

Classroom Behaviour Management Preparation In Undergraduate Primary Teacher Education In Australia : A Web-Based Investigation., Sue C. O'Neill, Jennifer Stephenson

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Classroom behaviour management is an essential skill required by all teacher graduates to facilitate instruction in curriculum content. This article describes the classroom behaviour management (CBM) content on offer in Australian undergraduate primary education programs. To date, no nationwide studies exist that report the CBM instruction on offer in pre-service teacher education programs. Thirty-five primary teacher preparation programs were reviewed. Thirty programs (85.7%) contained mandatory course-work in CBM, 108 units contained relevant content, 33 of those were stand-alone CBM units (30.6%). More units were found with CBM content embedded within methods or inclusion units than stand-alone CBM units. The mean …

Teaching Indigenous Children: Listening To And Learning From Indigenous Teachers, Ninetta Santoro, Jo-Anne Reid, Laurie Crawford, Lee Simpson Oct 2011

Teaching Indigenous Children: Listening To And Learning From Indigenous Teachers, Ninetta Santoro, Jo-Anne Reid, Laurie Crawford, Lee Simpson

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This article is based on the findings of a qualitative case study that examined the professional experiences and career pathways of fifty current and former Australian Indigenous teachers. Here, we draw on data obtained from semi-structured interviews with the teachers to highlight their knowledge in three key areas: ‘Indigenous ways of knowing’, ‘Indigenous learners’ lives beyond the classroom’ and ‘Building relationships with Indigenous students and communities’. We suggest that Indigenous teachers can potentially play important roles as teacher educators and as mentors to non-Indigenous teachers and preservice teachers. We argue that it is important for schooling systems and teacher education …

“Sport @ Dawn”-Pyd In Action? An Investigation Of The Youth Development Effects Of A School-Based Multi Sport Initiative On First Year Boys, Tim Mcmahon Oct 2011

“Sport @ Dawn”-Pyd In Action? An Investigation Of The Youth Development Effects Of A School-Based Multi Sport Initiative On First Year Boys, Tim Mcmahon

Theses

The genesis of this study emerges from an interest in exploring the potential of sport as a means of advancement of the individual and by extension society. Lerner (2004) for example highlights the importance of adolescent development when he ascertains that “the future of civil society in the world rests on the promotion of positive development and a commitment to positive and socially just community contributions by the young”. A body of empirical evidence based on the broad principals of Positive Youth Development (PYD) has suggested that sport can provide the catalyst for youth development(Hellison, 2000; Fraser Thomas et al, …

The body mass index (BMI) of diverse, low-income fifth grade students (n = 36) was regressed on physical activity (Child Adolescent Activity Log), percentage dietary fat (Food Habits Questionnaire), and the Food/Activity Parenting Practices Questionnaire. The model explained 50% of the variance in student BMI, adjusted R2 = .50, F (4, 19) = 6.84, p = .001. Students accurately perceived their weight status. Students' perception of parenting strategies, along with dietary fat, was significantly associated with their BMI. Parent's (n = 14) BMI, not the child's, was associated with the strategies they used. Three parents tested an …

Job Of Suburbia? A Serious Man And Viewer Perceptions Of The Biblical, David Tollerton Oct 2011

Job Of Suburbia? A Serious Man And Viewer Perceptions Of The Biblical, David Tollerton

Journal of Religion & Film

In the short period since its release in 2009, the notion that A Serious Man represents a retelling of the Book of Job has gained great currency. This is the case despite the film’s makers, Joel and Ethan Coen, denying that the biblical tale was their inspiration. This article considers the relationship between Job and A Serious Man and the motivations that may lie behind the assertion of parallels between the two. It is ultimately suggested that the relationship between film and text is more substantial if we look beyond the partial plot similarities to the theme of theological absurdity …

The purpose of this Roy adaptation model-based multi-site international mixed method study was to examine the relations of type of caesarean birth (unplanned/planned), number of caesarean births (primary/repeat), and preparation for caesarean birth to women’s perceptions of and responses to caesarean birth. The sample included 488 women from the United States (n = 253), Finland (n = 213), and Australia (n = 22). Path analysis revealed direct effects for type of and preparation for caesarean birth on responses to caesarean birth, and an indirect effect for preparation on responses to caesarean birth through perception of birth the …

Can Beck’S Theory Of Depression And The Response Style Theory Be Integrated?, Patrick Pössel Oct 2011

Can Beck’S Theory Of Depression And The Response Style Theory Be Integrated?, Patrick Pössel

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

There are obvious similarities between the cognitive constructs of Beck’s cognitive theory (1976) and the response style theory (Nolen-Hoeksema & Morrow, 1991). Different propositions of Ciesla and Roberts (2007) and Lyubomirsky and Nolen-Hoeksema (1993, 1995) concerning associations of two response styles, brooding and reflection, with constructs of Beck’s cognitive theory (schemata, cognitive errors, cognitive triad, automatic thoughts) were tested. Model comparisons were based on a 4-week study in which 397 participants completed self-report instruments at two time points. A model allowing schemata to influence brooding and reflection which influence the other cognitive variables of Beck’s cognitive theory fits the data …

An Educational Intervention For Hospice Volunteers, Susan Conrey Oct 2011

An Educational Intervention For Hospice Volunteers, Susan Conrey

Nursing Masters

Background and Significance: The House of John is a two-bed comfort care home located in rural, upstate NY and is staffed, in part, by a pool of adult volunteers. This researcher is an active member of that volunteer group. Volunteers are required to complete an eight week training course before they can begin caring for residents and fulfilling their volunteer hours. An estimated 60% of the active volunteers participated in their initial hospice volunteer training more than 5 years ago and have had little or no continuing or ongoing education since that time. In February of 2009, the newly organized …

What Do Beginning English Teachers Want From Professional Development?, Anita Jetnikoff Oct 2011

What Do Beginning English Teachers Want From Professional Development?, Anita Jetnikoff

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This qualitative, interpretive case study allows insights into the reflective emerging teacher practitioner as it explores pre-service and beginning teachers’ preparedness to deal with curriculum change and the demands of the classroom and school community. Five beginning teachers were asked what they want from professional development in a period of rapid curriculum change. The study aligns with emerging local and national agendas for teacher professional development and accreditation in Australia.

The data analysis, based on “community of practice” perspectives, shows that new teachers have clear ideas about the professional development they need and want. Professional development is seen as integral …

Patriotism And Taxation: The Tax Compliance Implications Of The Tea Party Movement, Richard L. Lavoie Oct 2011

Patriotism And Taxation: The Tax Compliance Implications Of The Tea Party Movement, Richard L. Lavoie

Akron Law Faculty Publications

Given the rise of the Tea Party movement, which draws strength from the historical linkage between patriotism and tax protests in the United States, the role of patriotism as a general tax compliance factor is examined in light of the extant empirical evidence. The existing research suggests that patriotism may be a weaker tax compliance factor in the United States than elsewhere. In light of this possibility, the Tea Party movement has the potential to weaken this compliance factor even more. Further, when considered in light of the broader tax morale factors that contribute to tax compliance, the Tea Party …

Kurt Vonnegut's Early Novels: Searching For Meaning In A Meaningless World, Matthew Praxmarer Oct 2011

Kurt Vonnegut's Early Novels: Searching For Meaning In A Meaningless World, Matthew Praxmarer

All Student Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates three novels by Kurt Vonnegut: The Sirens of Titan, Cat’s Cradle, and God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, and the philosophical stance which informs these works. The Sirens of Titan represents Vonnegut’s cosmology as well as his first attempts to propose one purpose for human life not based on any absolute knowledge. Cat’s Cradle proposes a provisional, ever-changing belief system in the religion of Bokonon, a religion which also speaks to Vonnegut’s humanism. God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater satirizes the discourses of the free enterprise system through protagonist Eliot as he struggles to use his wealth …

The Dangers Of Digital Imaging, Russel Laska Oct 2011

The Dangers Of Digital Imaging, Russel Laska

All Student Theses and Dissertations

In today's world, photography takes on a whole different meaning that it did 20-30 years ago. Whereas terms such as photograph and graphic used to have separate meanings that classified them from one another, these and many similar terms have been melded together to represent the same thing... a computer image. Due to the jump in technology over the past 10 years alone, digital cameras went from flashy novelties to a strong industry standard in photography, and swift computer alteration of photographs and images began with a very small amount of people to practically everyone who has a computer today. …

Should You Hire [email protected]?, Evan Blackhurst, Pamela Congemi, Jolene Meyer, Daniel Sachau Oct 2011

Should You Hire [email protected]?, Evan Blackhurst, Pamela Congemi, Jolene Meyer, Daniel Sachau

Psychology Department Publications

When a person applies for a job online, one of the first things a recruiter learns about the applicant is the applicant’s e-mail address. So what might a recruiter think about an applicant who refers to himself as DemonSeed420@ mail.com or [email protected]? That is, would job applicants with unprofessional e-mail addresses behave less professionally than applicants with more appropriate addresses? Will [email protected] be as unstable as she claims to be? Should an employer take a chance on [email protected]? Managers often make snap judgments about job candidates (Howard & Ferris, 1996) and do so using whatever information is available to them …

Governing Bad Behavior By Users Of Multi-Sided Platforms, David S. Evans Oct 2011

Governing Bad Behavior By Users Of Multi-Sided Platforms, David S. Evans

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Multi-sided platforms such as exchanges, search engines, social networks and software platforms create value by assembling and serving communities of people and businesses. They generally come into being to solve a transaction problem that prevents agents from getting together to exchange value. An essential feature of these platforms is that they promote positive externalities between members of the community. But as with any community, there are numerous opportunities for people and businesses to create negative externalities, or engage in other bad behavior, that can reduce economic efficiency and, in the extreme, lead to the tragedy of the commons. Multi-sided platforms, …
