Poor Women With Sexually Transmitted Infections: Providers’ Perspectives On Diagnoses, Genevieve R. Cox Oct 2011

Poor Women With Sexually Transmitted Infections: Providers’ Perspectives On Diagnoses, Genevieve R. Cox

Sociology

This article presents results from a study of health care providers, mainly nurses and nurse practitioners, who routinely diagnose sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in rural low-income populations in West Virginia (WV). A qualitative analysis of eighteen semi-structured interviews reveals that providers who consistently work with low-income populations believe patients undergo a negative change in self-image in response to a chronic STD diagnosis. Providers express concerns about a number of issues related to low-income, rural women’s access to sexual health care and see the need for more sexuality education, more funding for free and reduced cost clinics, and more available health …

Identifying The Knowledge, Skills And Competences For Nanoscience And Nanotechnology Research, Deepa Nathamuni Chari, Robert Howard, Brian Bowe

Articles

Nanoscience and nanotechnology research has influenced the research activities in various scientific disciplines such as physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, molecular biology and biotechnology. The postgraduate researchers working on nanoscience and nanotechnology related research projects in any of these scientific disciplines experience the world of nanoscience and nanotechnology research closely. The examinations of the postgraduate researchers’ lived experiences can certainly unfold the characteristics of nanoscience research as experienced by the researchers themselves and can further illuminate the knowledge, skills and competences required to successfully undertake this research.

A Child-Centered Response To The Elkins Family Law Task Force, Amy M. Pellman, Robert N. Jacobs, Dara K. Reiner Oct 2011

A Child-Centered Response To The Elkins Family Law Task Force, Amy M. Pellman, Robert N. Jacobs, Dara K. Reiner

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

In Elkins v. Superior Court, 163 P.3d 160 (Cal. 2007), California’s Supreme Court asked the Judicial Council to form a task force to make recommendations to increase “access to justice” in family court, because it was concerned about rules, policies, and procedures that put self-represented litigants at an unfair disadvantage in parentageand dissolution cases.

Neither the task force’s report in 2010 nor the legislation that the report inspired the same year addresses children’s due process rights, even though children ordinarily have no access to justice. This Article shows that due process sometimes requires the trial court to appoint counsel for …

Guggenheim For Governor Antisemitism, Race, And The Politics Of Gilded Age Colorado, Michael Lee Oct 2011

Guggenheim For Governor Antisemitism, Race, And The Politics Of Gilded Age Colorado, Michael Lee

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In the summer of 1893 financial panic struck Colorado. The price of silver, in a protracted downward spiral since the conclusion of the Civil War, finally crashed. The British government announced that its Indian mints were ceasing the coinage of silver rupees. The news of that decision caused a torrent of selling on the international market. In a matter of hours, the price of silver plummeted from eighty cents to sixty-four cents an ounce. The collapse in value of Colorado's most important commodity precipitated runs on local banks. Twelve banks alone collapsed in Denver during the month of July. By …

Diagnosing Liability : The Legal History Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Deirdre M. Smith Oct 2011

Diagnosing Liability : The Legal History Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Deirdre M. Smith

Faculty Publications

This Article examines the origins of the unique relationship between the psychiatric diagnosis Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and the law and considers the implications of that relationship for contemporary uses of the diagnosis in legal settings. PTSD stands apart from all other diagnoses in psychiatry 's standard classification system, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM} , and is the focus of significant controversy within psychiatry, because its diagnostic criteria require a determination of causation. By diagnosing a person with PTSD, a clinician necessarily assigns responsibility to a specific event or agent for causing the person 's symptoms, …

Motivation, Goal Orientation, Coaching, And Training Habits Of Women Ultrarunners, Rhonna Z. Krouse, Lynda Ransdell, Shelley M. Lucas, Mary Pritchard

Kinesiology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Ultrarunners participate in running events that exceed the 26.2 mile marathon distance (e.g., 50 K, 50-100 miles). Very little research exists on ultrarunners, especially women. The present study is a descriptive study detailing the motivation, goal orientation, demographic characteristics (e.g., age, job demands, family structure), training habits (e.g., hours per week of training), and coach utilization of women ultrarunners. Participants (N = 344) were recruited via the Ultra Listserve and four popular ultrarunning websites, and they completed a questionnaire on motivation, goal orientation, training, and coaching using Survey Monkey. General health orientation (mean + SD) (4.71 ± 1.06) and …

Assessment Of Refugees’ Health In Montgomery County: A Case Study Of Refugees From Rwanda And Burundi, Jean De Dieu Mukunzi Oct 2011

Assessment Of Refugees’ Health In Montgomery County: A Case Study Of Refugees From Rwanda And Burundi, Jean De Dieu Mukunzi

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

The purpose of this research study was to identify health needs and health problems experienced by a refugee/asylee population in Montgomery County. Montgomery County hosts a large number of refugees, asylees and asylum seekers from countries such as Iraq, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Soudan, Rwanda, Burundi and Congo.

A public health challenge is limited demographic data about this population. The scarce data on their health needs slows down not only their successful resettlement but also limits community organizations, health and human services agencies to improve the delivery of health care services and health promotion programs to refugees and immigrants in Montgomery County. …

Testing The Waters: Using Collective Real Options To Manage The Social Dilemma Of Strategic Alliances, Matthew Mccarter, Joseph T. Mahoney, Gregory B. Northcraft Oct 2011

Testing The Waters: Using Collective Real Options To Manage The Social Dilemma Of Strategic Alliances, Matthew Mccarter, Joseph T. Mahoney, Gregory B. Northcraft

Business Faculty Articles and Research

We extend real options research by introducing the concept of collective real options and model how collective real options provide strategic alliances a mechanism to manage social uncertainty. Collective real options manage social uncertainty by producing relational small wins that develop trust. The amount of trust developed by acquiring a collective real option depends on the exposure of alliance partners. Alliance partner reputation also plays an important role in the impact of collective real options.

Examining The Use Of Institutionally Designed Documentation Templates As A Vehicle For Changing Values And Practices In Health Care, Doris J. Ravotas Oct 2011

Examining The Use Of Institutionally Designed Documentation Templates As A Vehicle For Changing Values And Practices In Health Care, Doris J. Ravotas

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

Changing values and requirements are common occurrences in today’s health care settings. Institutionally designed documentation templates are often developed to demonstrate that these changes have been incorporated into clinical work. Little research has been completed to examine whether the use of these institutional templates leads to the intended change or whether the changes clash with other influences on clinical work. This paper illustrates how two qualitative methods: think aloud interviews and frame analysis can be combined to examine the use of the templates, the changing values themselves, and the influences on changes in clinical practice. An analysis of local change …

Changing Health Care Business Models And Costs, Thomas Rienzo Oct 2011

Changing Health Care Business Models And Costs, Thomas Rienzo

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

Changing the health care system has universal support in principal, but has proven contentious in practice. This paper draws upon the theories and publications of three leading business thinkers, and the frameworks they developed for applying business practices to the health care industry: Drs. Clayton Christensen, Robert Kaplan, and Michael Porter of Harvard University. It reviews the disruption theories of Christensen as he has applied them to the health care industry, and connects them with medical costing recommendations of Kaplan and Porter. Two possible disruption possibilities for clinical care and venue are presented.

Il Faut Manger: A Study Of Women’S Body Image And Obesity In Mali, Jennifer Denike Oct 2011

Il Faut Manger: A Study Of Women’S Body Image And Obesity In Mali, Jennifer Denike

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Africa has long been a region of the world marked by the media as one of rail thin children with distended bellies and older men and women with cracked and wrinkled skin sagging off their bones. Media outlets like BBC, CNN, and the New York Times focus entire sections of their websites to special reports entitled ‘Famine in Africa’2, ‘Food Crisis in Niger’3, and ‘East Africa Famine 2011’4. Photos of children curled up on the ground, ribs and bones protruding at every angle grace the pages of nearly every magazine and newspaper. Nongovernmental organizations plead for donations and host fundraisers …

Community Collateral Damage: A Question Of Priorities, Andrea Boyack Oct 2011

Community Collateral Damage: A Question Of Priorities, Andrea Boyack

Faculty Publications

Today’s soaring mortgage default rate and the uncertainty and delay associated with mortgage foreclosure proceedings threatens to cause financial tragedies of the commons in condominiums and homeowner associations across the country. Assessment defaults in privately governed communities result in an inequitable allocation of upkeep costs, and current law provides no way to prevent this spillover effect. But the collateral damages caused by delayed foreclosures and insufficient recoveries can be minimized by gradually increasing the priority position of the association lien.

In a majority of states, association liens are completely subordinate to the first mortgage lien. At foreclosure of the mortgage …

Student Victims Or Student Criminals? The Bookends Of Sexting In A Cyber World, Todd A. Demitchell, Martha Parker-Magagna Oct 2011

Student Victims Or Student Criminals? The Bookends Of Sexting In A Cyber World, Todd A. Demitchell, Martha Parker-Magagna

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The article argues that criminalizing sexting as child pornography unfairly victimizes adolescents, contradicting the purpose of laws intended to protect minors. It advocates for a balanced approach that addresses the harm caused by sexting without imposing felony charges, which can have lifelong consequences. The analysis emphasizes that zero-tolerance policies and strict legal responses are ineffective and unjust, as they fail to consider the context of adolescent behavior and the unintended consequences of criminalization.

The Influence Of Cultural Value In Organisation: A Study In Local And Anglo-American Firms In Malaysia, S. Zainuddin, C.R. Isa Oct 2011

The Influence Of Cultural Value In Organisation: A Study In Local And Anglo-American Firms In Malaysia, S. Zainuddin, C.R. Isa

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The budgeting process is argued to be very much influenced by the organisational culture that exists within an organisation. By employing Hofstede’s (1980) cultural dimension of power distance, this study aims to provide the current power distance index in Malaysia and the score of power distance and budget participation level in local and foreign firms operating in Malaysia. It also attempts to provide empirical evidence for the role of power distance as moderating variable in the relationship between budget participation and motivation. The overall results show that Malaysian firms scored a moderate level of power distance index. Contrary to earlier …
