Spiritual Development As A Component Of Holistic Development In Higher Education, Mary Claire Gilder
Spiritual Development As A Component Of Holistic Development In Higher Education, Mary Claire Gilder
LSU Master's Theses
The purpose of this study is to examine spirituality in terms of development among college students. A review of literature and best practices was conducted, and students were interviewed regarding their spiritual identities, their collegiate experiences, and the relationship between the two. The findings of this study show that college students value spirituality in multiple ways, although they are typically uncomfortable discussing spirituality and spiritual issues on campus.
The Latent Landscape, May Ann Babcock
The Latent Landscape, May Ann Babcock
LSU Master's Theses
I set a task to take a new look at local Louisiana landscape and to understand this place where I live. The spaces most powerful were leftover, abandoned and forbidden industrial places, including an old lock, stretches of the levee along the Mississippi River, highway underpasses and chemical, energy and sugar cane processing plants. Working from observational sketches and using local materials such as river mud and plant fibers for papermaking, I make prints on handmade paper, books and video that bring this latent landscape into view. Images and surfaces become primitive, disorienting, psychological, dark and changing landscapes.
Trials & Tributaries: Myth And Disaster In Southern Louisiana, Hannah March Campbell Sanders
Trials & Tributaries: Myth And Disaster In Southern Louisiana, Hannah March Campbell Sanders
LSU Master's Theses
Trials and Tributaries examines recent disasters occurring in southern Louisiana, interpreted through the Greek myths The Twelve Labors of Herakles. Mankind’s false sense of control over Louisiana’s resources leaves us vulnerable to nature’s powerful acts of reclamation: hurricanes, floods and the ground sinking beneath our feet. While researching the details and origins of The Twelve Labors, I found a plethora of similarities with local culture, politics and natural disasters. The characters in these narrative prints include hybrid monsters drawn from Greek mythology, which I have then further augmented with various forms of local south Louisiana fauna and contemporary political figures. …
An Evaluation Of Post-Katrina Emergency Preparedness Strategies In Hospitals On The U.S. Gulf Of Mexico Coastline, Holly Houk Cullen
An Evaluation Of Post-Katrina Emergency Preparedness Strategies In Hospitals On The U.S. Gulf Of Mexico Coastline, Holly Houk Cullen
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Recent tragedies are causing hospitals to more intensively review their strategies and broaden their approach to emergency preparation. The Gulf Coast storms of 2005 and 2008 and other catastrophic events nationwide have illustrated the central role hospitals can and should play in a community’s disaster recovery infrastructure. Given the unpredictability of the world today, with the possibility of a mass casualty crisis constantly threatening, there is an urgent need to seek and achieve higher levels of readiness. If a hospital organization is not investing in emergency preparedness on a continuous basis, that facility and its community are placed at higher …
An Investigation Of The Home And Family Questionnaire's Concurrent And Predictive Validity, Angel Lewis Herring
An Investigation Of The Home And Family Questionnaire's Concurrent And Predictive Validity, Angel Lewis Herring
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The current study sought to replicate the findings of Pierce, Alfonso, & Garrison (1998) that constructed and tested the Home and Family Questionnaire (HFQ). More specifically, the internal consistency of the HFQ’s three subscales, Maturity Facilitation, Child’s Use of Stimulating Materials, and the Parent-Child Emotional Relationship, was investigated. Construct validity of the HFQ was investigated by correlating the HFQ subscale scores to the Parenting Styles Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ) subscale scores (Robinson, Mandleco, Olsen & Hart, 1995). Criterion-related validity was investigated by correlating the HFQ subscale scores with the Pictorial Scales of Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance in Young Children (PSPC) …
Permission To Perform: A Waltz With Zelda, Sarah E. Smith
Permission To Perform: A Waltz With Zelda, Sarah E. Smith
LSU Master's Theses
This paper discusses an artistic journey of creating a one-woman show. It is the purpose of Sarah E. Smith, creator and performer, to marry private human experience to public theatrical expression. In this project, Smith is experimenting with character development generated by abstract, physical, absurd, and unconventional explorations. This exploration will create a distance from the literal translation of the story and will allow the audience to gain a better perspective of the character and her dilemma. It is the intention of the creator to make the action and need of the character more visceral, immediate and striking by expanding …
Symptom Profiles And Rates Of Diagnosis In Autistic And Other Atypically Developing Infants And Toddlers, Timothy Michael Dempsey
Symptom Profiles And Rates Of Diagnosis In Autistic And Other Atypically Developing Infants And Toddlers, Timothy Michael Dempsey
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Although there are many assessment scales that aid in the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), very few instruments are designed specifically to identify the condition in the population of infants and toddlers. The primary purpose of this study is to systematically examine the differences between scores on the Baby and Infant Screen for Children with aUtIsm Traits (BISCUIT)-Part 1 in a sample of at risk atypically developing children. Participants are children enrolled in Louisiana’s EarlySteps Program, which provides support services (e.g., speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, behavior psychology) to infants/toddlers and their families from birth to 36 months …
The New Old Legal Realism, Tracey E. George, Mitu Gulati, Ann C. Mcginley
The New Old Legal Realism, Tracey E. George, Mitu Gulati, Ann C. Mcginley
Scholarly Works
Do the decisions of appellate courts matter in the real world? The American judicial system, legal education, and academic scholarship are premised on the view that they do. The authors want to reexamine this question by taking the approach advocated by the original Legal Realists. The current project seeks to add to our knowledge of the relevance of case law by focusing on an area that has received little examination: how pronouncements about employment discrimination law by appellate courts translate into understandings and behavior at the ground level. As our lens, we use evidence of how people talk about the …

Regulating Information Flows, Regulating Conflict: An Analysis Of United States Conflict Minerals Legislation, Christiana Ochoa, Patrick J. Keenan
Articles by Maurer Faculty
The connection between conflict and commercial activity is the focus of this paper. In particular, it focuses on the ongoing conflict in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that is funded, in large part, by the sale of conflict commodities – minerals, metals and petroleum that fund violent groups at their source and then enters legitimate markets and products around the world. Recently, attention has turned to how to regulate conflict commerce as a tool for divesting from violent conflict. In the United States, for example, the recently-adopted Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act include a provision …
Statutory Reform To Protect Migrations As Phenomena Of Abundance, W. William Weeks, Jeffrey B. Hyman, Andrea Need
Statutory Reform To Protect Migrations As Phenomena Of Abundance, W. William Weeks, Jeffrey B. Hyman, Andrea Need
Articles by Maurer Faculty
Animal migrations capture the human mind and heart like few other natural phenomena. Migrations provide ecological, psychological (e.g., aesthetic), cultural, and economic benefits. Increasingly, though, migrations are being recognized as threatened phenomena-that is, spectacular aspects of the life history of animal species often involving large numbers of individuals, but which are threatened with impoverishment or demise, even though the species per se may not be in peril. Migration phenomena are themselves worthy of protection, as a category of biodiversity Yet, conserving migratory populations and their migrations is particularly problematic. Migratory animals are especially vulnerable to a variety of threats because …
Effects Of Mindfulness On Body Image, Affect, And Smoking In Women, Claire E. Adams
Effects Of Mindfulness On Body Image, Affect, And Smoking In Women, Claire E. Adams
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Recent research has shown that body image stimuli increase negative affect and smoking urges among female smokers. Mindfulness (paying attention to present-moment experience with an attitude of nonjudgmental acceptance) may be a useful technique to minimize the influence of body image issues on negative affect, smoking urges, and smoking behavior. The present study investigated whether mindfulness can influence the way female college smokers respond to a body image challenge. The study used a 2 x 2 factorial design with body image challenge (trying on a bathing suit vs. observing a purse) crossed with instructions (mindfulness vs. silence). Female smokers (n …
Predicting Posttraumatic Growth: Coping, Social Support, And Posttraumatic Stress In Children And Adolescents After Hurricane Katrina, Mark Allen Schexnaildre
Predicting Posttraumatic Growth: Coping, Social Support, And Posttraumatic Stress In Children And Adolescents After Hurricane Katrina, Mark Allen Schexnaildre
LSU Master's Theses
There is a growing area of research that explores the possibility that negative life events could ultimately result in positive outcomes. However, there exists some debate on whether or not children are capable of experiencing such outcomes. The proposed study examined posttraumatic growth (PTG), positive psychological change in the wake of a traumatic event, in a sample of child and adolescent victims of Hurricane Katrina. Specifically, the roles of coping and social support were studied as predictors of PTG. Additionally, the relationship between PTG and posttraumatic stress disorder, which has been shown to be a complex one, was explored. This …
Effects Of Ecotourist Pre-Purchase And External Information Search Behaviors And Strategies On Forest-Based Ecotourism Travel Decisions In Sri Lanka, Rangika T. Perera
Effects Of Ecotourist Pre-Purchase And External Information Search Behaviors And Strategies On Forest-Based Ecotourism Travel Decisions In Sri Lanka, Rangika T. Perera
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In the 1980s, the term ecotourism emerged as a direct result of acknowledgment and reaction by travelers to global ecological practices. In reality, the concept of ecotourism carries wide applications, particularly for bio-diverse countries with unique natural attractions. Sri Lanka qualified as such a country, presenting a significant tourism resource base, that display natural and cultural phenomena, including forests, waterfalls, mountains, exotic flora and fauna, and a heritage equally as ancient and as rich as the Greeks and Romans. Ecotourism in today’s dynamic global environment demands that ecotourism operators face a keenly competitive market in order to present an appealing …
Brief Interventions For Heavy College Drinkers: Randomized Clinical Trial To Investigate Comparable Efficacy Of Two Active Conditions, Magdalena Kulesza
Brief Interventions For Heavy College Drinkers: Randomized Clinical Trial To Investigate Comparable Efficacy Of Two Active Conditions, Magdalena Kulesza
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Brief interventions for college heavy drinkers have shown promise in reducing drinking and related negative consequences. However, since duration of the intervention, content, method of delivery, and duration of the follow up period vary across studies, we do not know whether length of the intervention has an impact on its effectiveness. In the present study, we conducted a randomized trial systematically evaluating efficacy of two brief interventions aimed at reducing alcohol use and consequences among college student drinkers. In addition, we evaluated treatment mediators and moderators. We randomly assigned 278 heavy drinking students to a 10-minute brief intervention, a 50-minute …
The Effects Of Mere Exposure On Responses To Foreign-Accented Speech, Lea Grossman
The Effects Of Mere Exposure On Responses To Foreign-Accented Speech, Lea Grossman
Master's Theses
The present study examined the effects of repeated exposure to the accent (standard American English vs. Asian Indian) of a prospective college professor on participants' cognitive reactions, affective reactions, and passage comprehension. Based on data collected from 115 undergraduate students, results showed that an Asian Indian-accented professor was perceived as being less competent, less likable, but more motivated than a standard American English speaking professor. In addition, the trustworthiness of the Asian Indian-accented professor decreased over time as well as participants' negative opinions of the professor. Finally, the results of the study indicate that when listening to the professor's foreign …
Supplemental Home-Based Exercise During Cardiac Rehabilitation, Addison Pica
Supplemental Home-Based Exercise During Cardiac Rehabilitation, Addison Pica
Master's Theses
In this study, the effects of supplemental, home-based walking on resting systolic blood pressure, waist circumference, and quality of life (QoL) in cardiac rehabilitation (CR) patients were evaluated. Twelve patients wore pedometers during the last four weeks of their 12-week CR program. Resting systolic blood pressure, waist circumference, and QoL were measured at weeks 1, 8, and 12. After data collection, participants were categorized into low, moderate, and high volume groups based on their average number of steps taken per week. There was significant improvement in QoL during the 12-week CR program (F(2,9) = 10.940, p < .001). Participants rated their QoL better at weeks 8 (p = .02) and 12 (p < .001) than at week 1. However, the amount of supplemental walking during the final four weeks of the CR program did not affect QoL scores (F(2,9) =.165, p > .05). Although there were …
Procedural Justice And The Rule Of Law: Fostering Legitimacy In Alternative Dispute Resolution, Rebecca Hollander-Blumoff, Tom R. Tyler
Procedural Justice And The Rule Of Law: Fostering Legitimacy In Alternative Dispute Resolution, Rebecca Hollander-Blumoff, Tom R. Tyler
Journal of Dispute Resolution
In Part II, we provide background on the psychology of procedural justice. Then, because the term rule of law has been used so widely and in so many different ways, we explain its various meanings and go on to draw connections between the elements of procedural justice and the rule of law, highlighting both the similarities and distinctions between the two principles. We then marshal evidence in support of the critical role that procedural justice and rule of law values play in fostering perceptions of legitimacy. Part III explores the links among procedural justice, rule of law, and specific ADR …

This article reviews access to justice both theoretically and in practice. Second, it highlights some of the challenges and successes of implementing access to justice projects. Finally, it discusses alternative dispute resolution (ADR) reforms in the developing world as one important element of access to justice.
Reflections On Designing Governance To Produce The Rule Of Law, Lisa Blomgren Bingham
Reflections On Designing Governance To Produce The Rule Of Law, Lisa Blomgren Bingham
Journal of Dispute Resolution
This article first briefly reviews definitions of the rule of law. Second, it briefly reviews current understandings and approaches to governance. Third, it introduces the concept of dispute systems design, its application to collaborative governance across the policy continuum, and failures in the rule of law as seen through this frame. Finally, it provides examples of rule of law initiatives organized across the policy process in governance.
Adr And Transitional Justice As Reconstructing The Rule Of Law, Michal Alberstein
Adr And Transitional Justice As Reconstructing The Rule Of Law, Michal Alberstein
Journal of Dispute Resolution
This paper addresses the role of ADR in reconstructing the rule of law following the critique this idea received during the 20th century, and exemplifies this role through reference to another alternative movement in law-The Transitional Justice movement. In contrast to efforts to reconcile the notion of the rule of law with ADR, or to demarcate the proper interaction between these social institutions in achieving justice, this paper argues for a deeper connection between the two notions: After briefly analyzing the intricate meanings of the rule of law notion through history and its relation to ADR, the paper continues to …
Family, The Market, And Adr, The, Amy J. Cohen
Family, The Market, And Adr, The, Amy J. Cohen
Journal of Dispute Resolution
This Article proceeds in three Parts. I begin by briefly summarizing what I will refer to as separate spheres ideology-the idea that our normative understandings of the family and the market are constructed in contradistinction to one another. I then show how this conceptual distinction between the family and the market shaped the development of alternative dispute processing during two periods of time. The first period, which I introduce to frame the second, examines how dispute processing reformers-beginning during the Progressive era and continuing to the 1930s-distinguished alternative forums for family disputes from alternative forums for commercial ones. In Part …
Contingent Constellations: Frederick Douglass And The Fact Freedom, Tomohiro Hori
Contingent Constellations: Frederick Douglass And The Fact Freedom, Tomohiro Hori
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Reading the celebrated Narrative (1845) of Frederick Douglass (1817-95) as well as his second autobiography My Bondage and My Freedom (1855) alongside the theories of freedom including Immanuel Kant’s and G. W. F. Hegel’s among others, this dissertation examines the process through which the young American slave Douglass discovers the idea of freedom and turns it into the primary object of his pursuit to the point that he stakes his life in his famed battle with the overseer Edward Covey. The experience of hearing other slaves’ voices—such as Aunt Hester’s cries and slave songs—opens his eyes to the darkest reality …
The Impact Of Choice On Child Sustained Attention In The Preschool Classroom, Kelly Elizabeth Geary
The Impact Of Choice On Child Sustained Attention In The Preschool Classroom, Kelly Elizabeth Geary
LSU Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine the mean duration of child attention to a self-selected toy and to determine the longest duration under which teaching condition children attend to toy play (child choice, adult choice, or adult presentation). Forty preschool-aged children were observed under each teaching condition and data were collected on the child’s duration of child attention. Results indicate that children’s sustained attention is significantly different across the three teaching conditions, and it was found that children attended for the longest duration of time during the child choice condition. It was also found that children attended for …

Facing The Unfaceable: Dealing With Prosecutorial Denial In Postconviction Cases Of Actual Innocence, Aviva A. Orenstein
Articles by Maurer Faculty
As this memorial volume illustrates, Fred Zacharias wrote insightfully on many aspects of the legal profession, covering a wide-range of ethical topics and analyzing many aspects of lawyers’ work. He was interested in the lives of lawyers and believed they owed a duty to society beyond an exclusive focus on individual clients’ interests.
This Article develops a question that intrigued Fred: Prosecutors’ duties postconviction to prisoners who might be innocent. Although Fred wrote about a panoply of questions that arise regarding the prosecutor’s duty to “do justice” after conviction, this Article will address one specific area of concern: how and …
An Empirical Contribution To Development Theory: A Covariance Structure Model For Development As Freedom, Carlos A. Rosas Lopez
An Empirical Contribution To Development Theory: A Covariance Structure Model For Development As Freedom, Carlos A. Rosas Lopez
LSU Master's Theses
This Thesis examines the empirical validity of Sen’s development theory. In his seminal work “Development as Freedom” Sen postulated a theoretical conceptualization of development which constitutes a paradigm shift towards a fundamental understanding of the determinants and causal relationships that explain development. A deconstruction of Sen’s development theory leads to five core tenets on which his theoretical conceptualization rests. These five pillars are translated onto testable hypothesis which are incorporated into a 2nd order recursive Covariance Structure Model (CSM) that allows scientific examination through hypothesis testing. Sen’s hypothesized core tenets are as follows: 1. Development is seen as an integrated …
The Predictive Ability Of Demographic And Psychosocial Risk Factors, School-Related Characteristics, And Service Interventions On Grade Attainment Among At-Risk Elementary School Children In A Truancy Intervention Program, Judith L. F. Rhodes
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of the current exploratory-descriptive retrospective study was to examine the demographic, school-related, and psychosocial risk factors among at-risk elementary school children (N = 12644) assessed at low and high levels of risk for continuing truancy. The sample was enrolled in 16 statewide program sites of a community-based truancy prevention program in Louisiana, which provided a letter and attendance monitoring for low-risk participants and intensive case management for high-risk participants. Intercorrelations among risk factors and referred services and on-time grade attainment were assessed for a subsample of the high-risk children (n = 6088). Binary logistic regression analyses were conducted …
Investigating The Validity Of Scores Obtained With The Home And Family Questionnaire And Their Reliability With Scores Obtained With The Home Observation For The Measurement Of The Environment-Middle Childhood, Holly Marie Bell
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The study of home environments and their relationships to child outcomes has become common practice among researchers of child development. As such, having a reliable instrument for measuring home environments that is also cost and time efficient is of primary interest to researchers. The most widely used instrument for measuring home environments is the Home Observation Measurement of the Environment (HOME) developed by Caldwell and Bradley in 1984. Use of the HOME is prevalent among researchers, yet it is costly to implement both in time and in money. An alternative tool for home environment measurement is the Home and Family …
Birth Matters: Discourses Of Childbirth In Contemporary American Culture, Jennifer Ellis West
Birth Matters: Discourses Of Childbirth In Contemporary American Culture, Jennifer Ellis West
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this project, I use a rhetorical-cultural approach to examine the multiple and often-contradictory messages circulating in contemporary American culture about the event of childbirth. Though many feminist scholars have shown how professional obstetrics’ view of physiological birth shapes medical practice and women’s experiences in hospitals, few have asked what the American public is learning about birth outside of the hospital, or why that knowledge might matter. In order to fill that gap, I trace a dominant narrative that positions institutionalized biomedical knowledge and technology as the exclusive producers of health and safety for birthing women and their babies in …
