Cardiovascular Arousal In Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Idiographic Analysis, Daniella Maria Aube Jan 2011

Cardiovascular Arousal In Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Idiographic Analysis, Daniella Maria Aube

Open Access Master's Theses

Stress in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is poorly understood, yet can be detrimental to the functioning of these individuals. Stress-related problems are more common in ASD than the typical population, and individuals with ASD often have poorer coping skills. It is crucial to understand stress responses in these individuals, to help them better learn, cope, and prevent problem behavior associated with stressful events and heightened arousal. However, traditional measures of stress (e.g. self-reports) are often unreliable in this population, due to communication deficits in ASD. Studying physiological responses is an alternative, potentially more accurate, way to study stress …

Conversation Elaboration And Emotional Well-Being In Perceived Social Support, Justin P. Andrews Jan 2011

Conversation Elaboration And Emotional Well-Being In Perceived Social Support, Justin P. Andrews

McNair Scholars Journal

Social support is an extremely diverse topic. It is the subject of approximately forty thousand scholarly articles when entered into the Grand Valley State University library database under the keyword, “social support.” For example, social support has been linked to positive psychological health and low rates of disorders (Barrera, 1986; Finch, Okun, Pool & Ruehlman, 1999; Sarason, Sarason & Gurung, 2001), major depression (Lakey & Cronin, 2008), and posttraumatic stress disorder (Brewin, Andrews, & Valentine, 2000). Also, people who do not have a strong social support system are subject to general psychological distress (Barrera, 1986; Cohen & Wills, 1985; Sarason, …

Phenomenology And The Rehabilitation Of Philosophy, Matthew J. Berrios Jan 2011

Phenomenology And The Rehabilitation Of Philosophy, Matthew J. Berrios

McNair Scholars Journal

Philosophy as the study of ultimate principles of knowledge, has been challenged recently in history by some of the intellectual forces in modernism and post-modernism. In response to this, the movement known as phenomenology has arisen to answer the objections posed by these two intellectual movements. As a movement, phenomenology was developed in the late nineteenth-century under the German mathematicianphilosopher Edmund Husserl as a response to the logical questions involved with some of the psychologistic systems of thought of the period that sought to reduce the rules and workings of logic to psychological processes of the human mind. However, because …

An Implicit Theory Of Self-Esteem: The Consequences Of Perceived Self-Esteem For Romantic Desirability, Virgil Zeigler-Hill, Erin M. Myers Jan 2011

An Implicit Theory Of Self-Esteem: The Consequences Of Perceived Self-Esteem For Romantic Desirability, Virgil Zeigler-Hill, Erin M. Myers

Faculty Publications

The provision of information appears to be an important property of self-esteem as evidenced by previous research concerning the status-tracking and status-signaling models of self-esteem. The present studies examine whether there is an implicit theory of self-esteem that leads individuals to assume targets with higher levels of self-esteem possess more desirable characteristics than those with lower levels of self-esteem. Across 6 studies, targets with ostensibly higher levels of self-esteem were generally rated as more attractive and as more desirable relationship partners than those with lower levels of self-esteem. It is important to note, however, that this general trend did not …

Esperienza Elementare E Dritto = Elementary Experience And Law, Paolo G. Carozza, Andrea Simoncini, Lorenza Violini, Marta Cartabia Jan 2011

Esperienza Elementare E Dritto = Elementary Experience And Law, Paolo G. Carozza, Andrea Simoncini, Lorenza Violini, Marta Cartabia

Books

Translated by Mariangela Sullivan

Preface by Julián Carrón

...The essays making up this book reveal that law finds itself at a crossroads that is more anthropological than juridical. Indeed one’s concept of law flows directly from one’s concept of humanity. For this reason it seems to me entirely appropriate that the authors have refused to reduce elementary experience to doctrine or other abstract formulas to be imposed mechanically upon reality. Only an individual capable of feeling one’s own elementary experience alive within herself can make a valuable contribution to the debate that will lead us through this crossroads in the …

Three Structural Changes For A New System Of International Climate Change Mitigation Agreements Based On The Wto Model, Samara Spence Jan 2011

Three Structural Changes For A New System Of International Climate Change Mitigation Agreements Based On The Wto Model, Samara Spence

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Past policy approaches to achieving international climate change mitigation have restricted the means for achieving mitigation to broad emissions caps. These policies have ignored the true nature of the climate change mitigation problem and have failed. This Note proposes a new design for a climate change mitigation system. It begins by analyzing the basic assumptions of the current cursory approach and by reviewing structural problems with those assumptions. It then reviews the successful World Trade Organization (WTO) model as a possible alternative structure and uses realities of the climate change problem to show why such an alternative could work in …

E-Textbooks Are Coming: Are We Ready?, Meg C. Murray, Jorge Pérez

Faculty Articles

Textbook options are expanding and the electronic text is poised to become prevalent in the college classroom. Cost pressures are driving this trend even as the academic value of e-textbooks has yet to be established. Limited research is available that examines the effectiveness of the e-textbook as a learning tool. This paper presents the results of a study that compares student performance in two sections of an online course, one using an e-textbook and the other using a paper-based text. No significant difference in student performance was found. However, until e-textbook format and features are standardized and business models generate …

Knowledge And Acknowledgement Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder And Effects On Military Couples, Laura M. Compton

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This study used mixed methods to examine the impact of service-members‟ knowledge and acknowledgement of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) on relationship satisfaction of both the service-members and their spouses. Family stress theory was used to conceptualize the relationship between the occurrence of PTSD and relationship satisfaction. Forty individuals (i.e., 20 couples) completed questionnaires containing self-report measures of knowledge of PTSD, experience of PTSD symptoms, severity of PTSD symptoms, and relationship satisfaction. Participants also completed semi-structured interviews concerning PTSD symptoms, impact of PTSD symptoms on their relationship, and attitudes observed about PTSD. No significant links were found between knowledge, acknowledgement, and …

Predictors Of Food Bank Usage Among Those With Low Food Security: Analysis Of The Current Population Survey Food Supplement Data, Sarah Mcqueen

MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects

Food insecurity is defined as the “access…at all times to the food needed for a healthy life” (Powledge 2010). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, approximately 15 percent of all Americans have experienced some measure of food insecurity. The issue is not new, but one that is ongoing and very complex and has impacts on individuals, households and society. In order to better understand the breadth and depth of the nation’s struggle with food sufficiency, an annual Food Supplement was attached to the Current Population Survey (CPS), a national labor force survey instrument. The CPS Food Supplement gathers information on …

This study will examine the quality of life survey findings of 154 recipients of services provided through the Kentucky Money Follows the Person program. In order to accomplish this, the term „quality of life‟ must first be defined and examined from the viewpoint of its role in the provision of health related services. Also, as a point of reference, a brief background concerning the Money Follows the Person program and its development will be provided. Lastly, after „quality of life‟ is defined for the purposes of this study, 183 surveys (154 baseline and 29 follow up) will be statistically analyzed …

The Effects Flooding On House Prices: Two Case Studies In Malaysia / Abdul Mutalib Bin Mohammad Beksin., Abdul Mutalib Mohammad Beksin

Student Works (2010-2019)

Flooding of residential property is a real and growing phenomenon in the Malaysia and is causing short and long-term detriment of various kinds to its victims. The issue of potential decrease in value of those properties which are located on the floodplain, though much discussed in the media, has received scant attention in the Malaysian research literature. An extensive literature survey of Anglo-Saxon and US origin has revealed a need for methodological innovation in the field of temporal impact of flooding and the inadequacy of the current paradigms for inclusion of insurance into flood modelling. The main thrust of this …

Program Improvement And Practice: In-Service And Pre-Service Student Teaching Reflections, Joan Hoskins Ph.D., Christine T. Schuette Ph.D., Margaret L. Charlton Med

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

A qualitative study was conducted with graduates (in-service teachers) and pre-service teacher candidates from a traditional elementary education program to explore perceptions of the student teaching process and its impact on teaching philosophy and practices. The program graduates and pre-service teachers described their experience as valuable, but believed their knowledge of pedagogy and classroom management to be deficient. The value of the internship process and implications for program improvement are discussed. Theory without practice is dead, and practice without theory is blind. — Anon

Transforming Teaching In Inclusive Settings: An Educator Looks At Vim, Robin Labarbera Ph.D. Jan 2011

Transforming Teaching In Inclusive Settings: An Educator Looks At Vim, Robin Labarbera Ph.D.

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Inclusive classrooms are those in which students with special needs are educated alongside their non-disabled peers. This article examines the attitudes that teachers in inclusive settings may hold that are believed to be barriers to successful inclusion. Given that historically, students with special needs in inclusive classrooms have made limited academic progress through traditional whole-class instruction, it is suggested that a transformation in inclusive teaching take place. This article suggests that educators apply Dallas Willard’s (2002) concept of VIM, outlined in his book, Renovation of the Heart. Christian teachers may find the vision, intention, and means Willard advocates to be …
