Disarming Youth Combatants: Mitigating Youth Radicalization And Violent Extremism, Alpaslan Özerdem, Sukanya Podder Jan 2011

Disarming Youth Combatants: Mitigating Youth Radicalization And Violent Extremism, Alpaslan Özerdem, Sukanya Podder

Journal of Strategic Security

In the complex of motivating variables that define the push and pull factors behind recruitment and participation in civil conflict, "radicalization"—or "violent extremism"—is not conceived as a very strong motive, as is the case with studies on terrorism. As part of disarming youth combatants, the linkages between reintegration outcomes and possible rerecruitment into radical and extremist violence must be better understood to mitigate such risks. In our analysis, the policies guiding reintegration of child soldiers and youth should be better attuned to the relationship between recruitment motivations and reintegration outcomes, and must be approached from a political lens rather than a …

Radicalism Within The Context Of Social Movements: Processes And Types, Remy Cross, David A. Snow Jan 2011

Radicalism Within The Context Of Social Movements: Processes And Types, Remy Cross, David A. Snow

Journal of Strategic Security

Drawing on work within the study of social movements and on conversion processes that is relevant to understanding radicalization, as well as on our own relevant research experiences and findings, especially on radicalism in right-wing and left-wing movements, we focus attention on the elements and dynamics of social movements, both intra-movement and extra-movement, that facilitate the grassroots development and maintenance of radical identities and enhance or diminish the prospect of engagement in radical action. In particular, we note the importance of free spaces to associate apart from the reach of control agents and adversaries, the development of affinity groups and a …

Teaching Agency And Narrative Analysis - The Chopin Preludes In E Minor And E Major, Matt Bailey-Shea Jan 2011

Teaching Agency And Narrative Analysis - The Chopin Preludes In E Minor And E Major, Matt Bailey-Shea

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

In a recent issue of this journal, Gordon Sly argues that typical undergraduate training in harmony and counterpoint fails to fully prepare students for upper-level analytical work: "...when we ask students to make an argument about a work's striking qualities, its particularly beautiful or eccentric events, about what gives it its special character...the typical Freshman-Sophomore sequence proves largely inadequate as a preparation for analysis." To address this problem, he proposes that we encourage students to develop "an analytical point of view" by telling the story of a particular "musical agent."

A Revised Taxonomy For Music Learning, Deborah Rifkin, Philip Stoecker Jan 2011

A Revised Taxonomy For Music Learning, Deborah Rifkin, Philip Stoecker

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

Among college music teachers, it is commonly lamented that ear-training skills develop more slowly than other kinds of musical knowledge, such as written theory skills. Informally, the "ear" develops more slowly than the "mind." Intrigued by this phenomenon, which suggests that the learning process for aural skills could be different compared to other types of knowledge, we have evaluated our students and our own pedagogy for years with the intent of developing a learning taxonomy for aural development. That is, we sought adaptations that catered specifically to music learning by accommodating the time-sensitive nature of performed arts, rather than the …

The Condition Of Graduate Theory Review - Multilevel Analysis And The Pedagogy Of Chord And Line, John S. Cotner Jan 2011

The Condition Of Graduate Theory Review - Multilevel Analysis And The Pedagogy Of Chord And Line, John S. Cotner

Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy

Courses in graduate theory review vary considerably due to the diverse goals of music departments at national and regional institutions, degree programs, requisite knowledge and skill of students, as well as training and experience of instructors, among other reasons. The scope of theory review can be viewed along a continuum. At one extreme we might focus solely on basic tonal grammar through short drills in writing and conventional harmonic analysis, with little if any full score analysis. At the other extreme, student skill sets and engagement might open the way to more accelerated learning. Among upper-tier schools, this kind of …

Claims And Coverage In Montana For Damage To A Victim's Family Members, Greg Munro Jan 2011

Claims And Coverage In Montana For Damage To A Victim's Family Members, Greg Munro

Faculty Journal Articles & Other Writings

This article explores those situations in which Montana tort law now recognizes secondary injuries to family members resulting from primary severe injuries or death of another family member, which recognition may invoke additional auto insurance coverage. The article first makes a short survey of the development of Montana tort law insofar as it has come to take cognizance of family injuries. The article then looks at the application of insurance law to those claims with special emphasis on recent cases.

Sarasota Oral History Project Old Stories New Media, Casey Schelhorn Jan 2011

Sarasota Oral History Project Old Stories New Media, Casey Schelhorn

Theses & ETDs

This thesis has two components: four oral histories and a written portion. Three of the four oral histories are part of the larger Sarasota Oral History Project, a collaborative project between NewCollege and SarasotaCounty. The oral histories take two forms: a complete transcription of the interviews and a 5-8 minute long audio slideshow. The written portion of the thesis provides a critical analysis of the Sarasota Oral History Project. The first section briefly outlines the history of oral history. In the second section I utilize this historiography to better understand where the Sarasota Oral History Project fits within this history, …

Reward Probability And The Variability Of Foraging Behavior In Rats, W. David Stahlman, Aaron P. Blaisdell Jan 2011

Reward Probability And The Variability Of Foraging Behavior In Rats, W. David Stahlman, Aaron P. Blaisdell

Psychological Science Articles

The connection between reduced reinforcement probability and increased behavioral variability hasbeen well established in recent years (Gharib, Gade, & Roberts, 2004; Stahlman, Roberts, & Blaisdell, 2010). Researchers have hypothesized that this relationship is an adaptive one - it is beneficial for animals to increase behavioral variability in response to low likelihood of success, because this increase in variability potentially allows them to discover new behavioral options that are more highly rewarded. We conducted a study to investigate the relationship between behavioral variability and reward probability in an ecologically valid experimental task. We trained rats to search for hidden food in the …

The Impact Of Cancer Resource Center Servicescapes On Cancer Patient's Health, Thorne Washington

Honors Capstones

This study explores how cancer patients are most affected by four different types of fatigue. I discuss the methodology of how the surveys were administered, and also my experiences dealing with LivingWell Cancer Resource Center. I also mention the multiple groups that are present at LivingWell, and how these groups can positively or negatively effect fatigue restoration. I discuss the major impacts of fatigue and the recorded fatigue levels of members both before, and after they attend a course. It then goes into detail on how cancer resource center can provide fatigue restoration by the physical design of the building. …

The Search For The Cure : Exploring The Mystery Behind The Importance Of Animal Therapy, Music Therapy, And Weighted Vests On Children Who Have Autism, Hailey Paver Jan 2011

The Search For The Cure : Exploring The Mystery Behind The Importance Of Animal Therapy, Music Therapy, And Weighted Vests On Children Who Have Autism, Hailey Paver

Honors Capstones

The number of people diagnosed with autism has been dramatically increasing over the last ten years. It is estimated that in the next decade there will be more than four million people on the autism spectrum. There is a mystery surrounding autism in the world today, and that is because the cause and cure remain unknown and the symptoms seen are variable. New treatment approaches have been created to alleviate the debilitating symptoms of autism, but many treatments lack scientific evidence. My goal for this project was to investigate autism and the recently popular therapy approaches attached with the condition. …

Putting Effort Into Learning: Do Evaluative Focus And Motivational Intervention Play A Key Role In Performance?, Rebecca Kelley Jan 2011

Putting Effort Into Learning: Do Evaluative Focus And Motivational Intervention Play A Key Role In Performance?, Rebecca Kelley

Honors Capstones

This study examined two factors hypothesized to affect performance in a learning environment. Participants completed a tutorial about evaluating arguments under varying conditions in a 2 (evaluative focus) x 2 (motivational intervention) between-participants design. A personal evaluation focus was emphasized for some participants and not for other participants. Moreover, some participants were exposed to a motivational intervention highlighting room for skill development whereas other were not. After participants completed the tutorial, they completed a post-test that assessed their skills. According to prior research, it was expected that participants who felt either personally evaluated or exposed to a motivational intervention would …

Discovering The Similarities Between Sm Communities And Other Organizations, Bree Parington Jan 2011

Discovering The Similarities Between Sm Communities And Other Organizations, Bree Parington

Honors Capstones

The current research study is comparing and contrasting the demographic diversity of Sadomasochist (SM) organizations and other community organizations by surveying an SM organization and a non-SM organization. A confidential online survey was used to collect data. Fourteen general questions were asked: age, gender, sexual orientation, relationship status, number of children, ethnicity, highest level of education completed, employment, hours worked, income, religious affiliation, personality, infidelity and self esteem. Data was analyzed using Levene's test and t-tests. Relationship status and religion were two differences between the SM group and the non SM group. The author discusses limitations and future directions of …

Effects Of Utility Value And Goals On Task Performance And Interest, Jeffery J. Kosovich Jan 2011

Effects Of Utility Value And Goals On Task Performance And Interest, Jeffery J. Kosovich

Honors Capstones

The perception of utility in tasks has been shown to facilitate performance and interest. This study (N = 160) is an extension of work by Hulleman and colleagues and is a 2 (success expectancy: high, low) x 2 (utility level: No Utility, Utility) x 2 (goal level: no goal, difficult goal), between-subjects design. Previous findings have shown that individuals with low success expectancies benefit from a utility manipulation, but high success expectancy individuals do not. The current study aimed to facilitate performance and interest, particularly in high expectancy participants. Participants learned a new math technique. After the practice session, participants …

Gender And Ethnicity As Moderator Of Young Adults' Perception With Their Mother And Grandparents, Erika Quezada Jan 2011

Gender And Ethnicity As Moderator Of Young Adults' Perception With Their Mother And Grandparents, Erika Quezada

Honors Capstones

Limited research is available on adolescent-grandparent relationships, especially from the young adult perspective and across ethnicities. This study explores the perception of the child-mother and the grandchild-grandparent relationships across Caucasian, African American and Hispanic ethnicities as well as the role young adults' gender plays in predicting the quality of the grandchild-grandparent relationship. This study was based on answers to a structured questionnaire from a sample of274 undergraduate students aged 19-24 at a large Midwestern university. Mixed results suggest that perception of the relationship is moderated by ethnicity and gender. Findings suggest that young adults of Caucasian descent perceived a more …

Children Giving Eyewitness Testmionies In A Court Of Law, Kaitlin Hargate Jan 2011

Children Giving Eyewitness Testmionies In A Court Of Law, Kaitlin Hargate

Honors Capstones

In a court of law, the issue of a child giving an eyewitness account has been debated among professionals. There is a significant amount of evidence suggesting that children are unable to give a reliable account. Their cognitive ability to perceive a questionable situation is not fully developed, and neither is their ability to recall memories. In order to examine the different variables surrounding this issue, a literature review was conducted. The results of numerous studies suggest that although children may not be the most reliable witnesses, sometimes they are the only witnesses. The following literature review discusses the conditions …

Correlates Of Workplace Bullying, Depression, Anxiety, Narcissism, And Self-Esteem, Alexander M. Fireman Jan 2011

Correlates Of Workplace Bullying, Depression, Anxiety, Narcissism, And Self-Esteem, Alexander M. Fireman

Honors Capstones

The following study examined the prevalence and impact of workplace bullying. To achieve this goal, a survey was administered through Amazon.com's Mechanical Turk (N = 122). To measure workplace bullying, the study used the Negative Acts Questionnaire (NAQ). Other aspects of emotional health including self-esteem, depression, and general health were assessed with corresponding scales in order to determine the impact workplace bullying has on its victims. Bivariate correlation analyses were conducted. The study found positive correlations among workplace bullying intensity, workplace incivility, and paranoia. Negative correlations were discovered between workplace bullying intensity and self-esteem. Further research on this topic should …

Developing A Statistically Valid And Practically Useful Student Evaluation Instrument, Jeffrey S. Skowronek, Bruce K. Friesen, Heather Masonjones

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The current article presents the findings on the development of a student evaluation instrument in which course evaluation is directly tied to student learning outcomes. With a committee consisting of instructors from six distinct disciplines brought together as part of a working group for this purpose, the instrument was developed utilizing research on the components of effective teaching and how these components impacted student learning. The instrument was tested at two time points, once via pen and paper (n=340 students) and the other online (n=2636 students). Factor Analysis resulted in one latent factor both times. The instrument also had high …

Exploring The Variation In First Year Undergraduates' Induction Into Their Academic Disciplines, Min Yang, Beverly Joyce Webster, Michael Prosser

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This study explored qualitative variation in first year undergraduates’ induction into the discipline in four dimensions: (1) induction into disciplinary knowledge, (2) induction into disciplinary research, (3) integration of learning from different courses, and (4) induction into disciplinary skills. Data were drawn from focus groups with students from different disciplines at a university in Hong Kong. Phenomenographic analysis identified four categories about induction into disciplinary knowledge and disciplinary research, and three categories regarding integration of learning. The categories were described in terms of the referential (aspects of the dimension discerned by students) and structural components (how students explained the aspects). …

The Influence Of Tech-Savvyness And Clicker Use On Student Learning, Jennifer Zapf, Adolfo Garcia Jan 2011

The Influence Of Tech-Savvyness And Clicker Use On Student Learning, Jennifer Zapf, Adolfo Garcia

The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of technology proficiency and clicker use on students’ perceptions of clickers, engagement and class grade point average. Four hundred five students completed a questionnaire that measured Student Technology Proficiency (STP; Garcia and Zapf, in press), and participated in the validation of two new dependent measures: perception of clickers and student engagement. Class GPA was collected after the semester ended. A 2x2 MANOVA experiment was conducted and yielded no differences between students enrolled in a clicker class versus not, but there were several findings between STP groups. Students high in STP …

The Potential For Teaching Quantitative Reasoning Across The Curriculum: Empirical Evidence, Nathan D. Grawe Jan 2011

The Potential For Teaching Quantitative Reasoning Across The Curriculum: Empirical Evidence, Nathan D. Grawe

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Educational theorists have argued that effective instruction in quantitative reasoning (QR) should extend across the curriculum. While a noble goal, it is not immediately evident that this is even possible. To assess the feasibility of this approach to QR instruction, I examine papers written by undergraduates for submission to a sophomore writing portfolio. I distinguish papers in which QR is central to the main thrust of the argument (“centrally relevant”) from those in which QR would strengthen the argument by providing context, enriching description, or presenting background (“peripherally relevant”). I find extensive potential for QR instruction across the curriculum. In …
