Designing A Centralized Training Academy For Maritime Security, Angelica Sogor Dec 2011

Designing A Centralized Training Academy For Maritime Security, Angelica Sogor

Open Access Theses

The maritime industry is an economic activity that enables global trade and travel. However, the transportation network is threatened by security risks that seek to exploit vulnerabilities and cause damage to ships, interrupt the global supply chain network, and endanger the lives of crewmembers and passengers. While policies exist to aid in the prevention of attacks, these policies, alone, are insufficient to sustain global maritime domain security and awareness. Policies must be effectively enforced and complemented with highly trained crewmembers who have the knowledge and skills to efficiently prevent, detect, and respond to threats. This study analyzed maritime security policies …

Inactivity, Inflammation, And Insulin Resistance In Type 2 Diabetes And The Metabolic Syndrome, Ashley E. Moncrieft Dec 2011

Inactivity, Inflammation, And Insulin Resistance In Type 2 Diabetes And The Metabolic Syndrome, Ashley E. Moncrieft

Open Access Theses

Both type 2 diabetes (T2D) and the the metabolic syndrome (MetS) have been shown to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Inflammation and insulin resistance have each been associated with the development of MetS and the onset of T2D as well as the risk of CVD. Inflammation and insulin resistance are therefore suitable targets for public health initiatives and interventions in persons at risk for or living with CVD. Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for CVD as well as MetS and T2D. Conversely, increased physical activity is associated with improved health outcomes for individuals with a high …

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We report the detection of three new exoplanets from Keck Observatory. HD 163607 is a metal-rich G5IV star with two planets. The inner planet has an observed orbital period of 75.29 ± 0.02 days, a semi-amplitude of 51.1 ± 1.4 m s−1, an eccentricity of 0.73 ± 0.02, and a derived minimum mass of MPsin i = 0.77 ± 0.02 MJup. This is the largest eccentricity of any known planet in a multi-planet system. The argument of periastron passage is 78.7 ± 2fdg0; consequently, the planet's closest approach to its parent star is very near the line of sight, leading …

Egypt And Mormonism: Oriental Traits Of The Latter-Day Saints, Alexander Fronk Dec 2011

Egypt And Mormonism: Oriental Traits Of The Latter-Day Saints, Alexander Fronk

Arrington Student Writing Award Winners

In his lecture, Dr. Francaviglia presents a fascinating framework in which to understand American history and culture, as well as Mormons specifically. Orientalism was defined for the lecture as the assimilation or imitation of that which is oriental in religious or philosophical thought, or in art. Through various mediums, including architectural examples, quotes from Mormons and their detractors, and travel literature, Dr. Francaviglia demonstrates that not only Mormons were compared to Oriental peoples and assigned Oriental traits, but they also actively attributed such traits to themselves; they assumed an Oriental identity. By understanding how Mormons were Orientalized by others and …

Facilitating The Staff Nurse's Role In Creating A Culture Of Care On An Obstetrical Care Unit, Laura Struve Hanson Dec 2011

Facilitating The Staff Nurse's Role In Creating A Culture Of Care On An Obstetrical Care Unit, Laura Struve Hanson

Theses and Graduate Projects

The art of caring is foundational to the nursing profession, but too often nurses prioritize care for others above care for themselves. Nurse self-care and peer care are integral in the creation of a unit culture of care. This project introduces a new nursing practice model based on Jean Watson's caring theory and Caritas Processes to guide staff nurses on an obstetrical unit in creating a culture of care for self and peers. The practice model relies on nurse courage, intentional collaboration, and creativity to uniquely integrate the Caritas Processes into professional practice. This progression fosters the emergence of holistic …

Introducing Integrative Medicine At The Bedside To Patients With Post-Traumatic Headache Pain, Melissa E. Allard Dec 2011

Introducing Integrative Medicine At The Bedside To Patients With Post-Traumatic Headache Pain, Melissa E. Allard

Theses and Graduate Projects

The use of integrative medicine is growing, and the nursing profession has a responsibility to meet the changing needs of patients. This paper describes a model of nursing for delivering integrative medicine practices at the bedside to persons suffering with post-traumatic headache pain related to traumatic brain injury (TBI) and is grounded in Katherine Kolcaba's Comfort Theory. A patient is best served when the holistic principles of integrative medicine are facilitated by a nurse who is centered and able to introduce these modalities with positive intention. The goal of the practice model is to provide the foundation for nursing to …

Advancing A Culture Of Safety Through The Creation Of A Unit-Based Safety Team, Lynda K. Carr Dec 2011

Advancing A Culture Of Safety Through The Creation Of A Unit-Based Safety Team, Lynda K. Carr

Theses and Graduate Projects

Hospitals are challenged to create a strong culture of safety within their organization to eliminate harm to patients. This paper describes a project to advance a culture of safety on a cardiovascular acute care unit at an urban hospital through the creation of a unit-based safety team. Based on the premise that patient safety is a local phenomenon, the rationale for the project is to aim interventions at the unit level where they will have the greatest impact. Four key steps in creating an effective unit-based safety team are highlighted: team member selection, team development, enacting interventions, and evaluating interventions …

Thawing The Frozen Heart: Turning To Antonio Machado To Overcome The Silence In El Corazón Helado By Almudena Grandes, Richard A. Henricksen Dec 2011

Thawing The Frozen Heart: Turning To Antonio Machado To Overcome The Silence In El Corazón Helado By Almudena Grandes, Richard A. Henricksen

Theses and Dissertations

In an attempt to demonstrate Spain's obligation to recover its ignored historic memory, Almudena Grandes evokes the poetry of a man whose past itself has been manipulated, misused and partially forgotten: the great poet Antonio Machado. In this study I examine the use of the famous "two Spain" imagery from Machado's "Españolito" as a tool for subverting many erroneous concepts about the war that, according to Grandes, are still prevalent in Spanish society. I also examine how this "two Spain" conflict demonstrates the crossroads that faces the third generation of Spaniards after the Civil War: that of collectively remaining in …

Quality Selection For Dynamic Adaptive Streaming Over Http With Scalable Video Coding, Travis L. Andelin Dec 2011

Quality Selection For Dynamic Adaptive Streaming Over Http With Scalable Video Coding, Travis L. Andelin

Theses and Dissertations

Video streaming on the Internet is increasingly using Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH), in which the video is converted into various quality levels and divided into two-second segments. A client can then adjust its video quality over time by choosing to download the appropriate quality level for a given segment using standard HTTP. Scalable Video Coding (SVC) is a promising enhancement to the DASH protocol. With SVC, segments are divided into subset bitstream blocks. At playback, blocks received for a given segment are combined to additively increase the current quality. Unlike traditional DASH, which downloads segments serially, this encoding …
