Adipose Tissue Endocannabinoid System Gene Expression: Depot Differences And Effects Of Diet And Exercise, Tongjian You, Beth L. Disanzo, Xuewen Wang, Rongze Yang, Dawei Gong

Faculty Publications

Background: Alterations of endocannabinoid system in adipose tissue play an important role in lipid regulation and metabolic dysfunction associated with obesity. The purpose of this study was to determine whether gene expression levels of cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB1) and fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) are different in subcutaneous abdominal and gluteal adipose tissue, and whether hypocaloric diet and aerobic exercise influence subcutaneous adipose tissue CB1 and FAAH gene expression in obese women.

Methods: Thirty overweight or obese, middle-aged women (BMI = 34.3 ± 0.8 kg/m2, age = 59 ± 1 years) underwent one of three 20-week weight …

Characterization Of Street Food Consumption In Palermo: Possible Effects On Health, Silvio Buscemi, Annamaria Barile, Vincenza Maniaci, John A. Batsis

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background: Street Food (SF) consists of out-of-home food consumption and has old, historical roots with complex social-economic and cultural implications. Despite the emergence of modern fast food, traditional SF persists worldwide, but the relationship of SF consumption with overall health, well-being, and obesity is unknown.

Methods: This is an observational, cross-sectional study. The study was performed in Palermo, the largest town of Sicily, Italy. Two groups were identified: consumers of SF (n = 687) and conventional restaurant food (RES) consumers (n = 315). Study subjects answered a questionnaire concerning their health conditions, nutritional preferences, frequency of consumption of SF and …

The Effect Of Shifts In Medium Types On The Growth And Morphology Of Spirulina Platensis (Arthrospira Platensis), Yean-Chang Chen Oct 2011

The Effect Of Shifts In Medium Types On The Growth And Morphology Of Spirulina Platensis (Arthrospira Platensis), Yean-Chang Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In order to reduce the cultural cost and increase the biomass of Spirulina platensis cultures, two basic culture media were used in the present study, the Zarrouk (Z9) and Provasoli's enriched seawater (PES) media. They were re-modified into five media by adding varied concentrations of NaCl, NaHCO3 and seawater (salinity). S. platensis could grow well in all of these media. The Z9 medium provided the best growth rate at the end of culture and the PES medium provided the best initial growth curve slope. After the media were shifted from PES to Z9, the long algal filaments fragmented to form …

Loss-Of-Function Of Constitutive Expresser Of Pathogenesis Related Genes5 Affects Potassium Homeostasis In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Monica Borghi, Ana Rus, David E. Salt Oct 2011

Loss-Of-Function Of Constitutive Expresser Of Pathogenesis Related Genes5 Affects Potassium Homeostasis In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Monica Borghi, Ana Rus, David E. Salt

Biology Faculty Publications

Here, we demonstrate that the reduction in leaf K+ observed in a mutant previously identified in an ionomic screen of fast neutron mutagenized Arabidopsis thaliana is caused by a loss-of-function allele of CPR5, which we name cpr5-3. This observation establishes low leaf K+ as a new phenotype for loss-of-function alleles of CPR5. We investigate the factors affecting this low leaf K+ in cpr5 using double mutants defective in salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) signalling, and by gene expression analysis of various channels and transporters. Reciprocal grafting between cpr5 and Col-0 was used to determine the relative importance of …

Molecular Diversity Of Fungal Phylotypes Co-Amplified Alongside Nematodes From Coastal And Deep-Sea Marine Environments, Punyasloke Bhadury, Holly Bik, John D. Lambshead, Melanie C. Austen, Gary R. Smerdon, Alex D. Rogers Oct 2011

Molecular Diversity Of Fungal Phylotypes Co-Amplified Alongside Nematodes From Coastal And Deep-Sea Marine Environments, Punyasloke Bhadury, Holly Bik, John D. Lambshead, Melanie C. Austen, Gary R. Smerdon, Alex D. Rogers

Hubbard Center for Genome Studies (HCGS)

Nematodes and fungi are both ubiquitous in marine environments, yet few studies have investigated relationships between these two groups. Microbial species share many well-documented interactions with both free-living and parasitic nematode species, and limited data from previous studies have suggested ecological associations between fungi and nematodes in benthic marine habitats. This study aimed to further document the taxonomy and distribution of fungal taxa often co-amplified from nematode specimens. A total of 15 fungal 18S rRNA phylotypes were isolated from nematode specimens representing both deep-sea and shallow water habitats; all fungal isolates displayed high pairwise sequence identities with published data in …

Working To Educate Global Citizens And Create Neighborly Communities Locally And Globally: Penn’S Partnerships In West Philadelphia As A Democratic Experiment In Progress, Ira Harkavy, Matt Hartley, Joann Weeks, Rita Hodges

Higher Learning Research Communications

In the rapidly accelerating global era in which we now live, human beings must solve a vast array of unprecedently complex problems. Perhaps the most complex and significant problems facing society today are persistent, widening, and increasingly destructive social, economic, and political inequality; globally destructive, man-made climate change; and increasingly frequent and savage terrorist acts. Given their proclaimed dedication to critical intelligence, and their unique constellation of formidable resources to develop it, institutions of higher education, we submit, have a unique responsibility to help solve these problems—indeed all the problems intensified by globalization.

Population Attributable Risk Of Unintentional Childhood Poisoning In Karachi Pakistan, Bilal Ahmed, Zafar Fatmi, Amna R Siddiqui Oct 2011

Population Attributable Risk Of Unintentional Childhood Poisoning In Karachi Pakistan, Bilal Ahmed, Zafar Fatmi, Amna R Siddiqui

Department of Medicine

Background: The percentage of unintentional childhood poisoning cases in a given population attributable to specific risk factors (i.e., the population attributable risk) which can be calculated, determination of such risk factors associated with potentially modifiable risk factors, are necessary to focus on the prevention strategies.

Methods: We calculated PARs, using 120 cases with unintentional poisoning and 360 controls in a hospital based matched case- control study. The risk factors were accessibility to hazardous chemicals and medicines due to unsafe storage, child behavior reported as hyperactive, storage of kerosene and petroleum in soft drink bottles, low socioeconomic class, less education of …
