Abstract

PURPOSE:

This study aimed to investigate whether cardiac output (CO) responses were related to VO2 kinetics during cycling in type 2 diabetes.

METHODS:

A total of 9 middle-aged women with uncomplicated type 2 diabetes, 9 nondiabetic overweight women, and 11 nondiabetic lean women were recruited. Initially, the ventilatory threshold (VT) and peak VO2 were determined during a maximal graded test. Then, on two separate days, subjects completed three 7-min bouts of constant-load cycling at each of three intensities: 50% VT, 80% VT, and midpoint between VT and peak VO2 (50% Δ). CO (inert gas rebreathing) was recorded at 30 …

Effects Of The Use Of A Heart Failure Diary On Self-Care And Quality Of Life, Claudette Walker Jan 2011

Effects Of The Use Of A Heart Failure Diary On Self-Care And Quality Of Life, Claudette Walker

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Heart Failure is a growing and costly problem in the United States. There have been advancements in medical therapy, but unfortunately patients continue to have frequent exacerbations and hospital readmissions. The reason for this may be inadequate Heart Failure self-care, which is the most important aspect of disease management. Literature strongly encourages self-care, but there is minimal research focusing on the use of a Heart Failure diary. The study was a one group pretest/posttest design. The intervention included individualized education, provision of the Heart Failure Diary, and weekly follow-up for a total of four weeks. The Heart Failure Diary was …

The Relationship Of Preschool Children's Television Viewing, Food/Brand Recognition/Recall, Weight Classification, And Parent's Knowledge Of American Academy Of Pediatrics' Recommendations Of Daily Television Viewing, Patricia Marley Howell Jan 2011

The Relationship Of Preschool Children's Television Viewing, Food/Brand Recognition/Recall, Weight Classification, And Parent's Knowledge Of American Academy Of Pediatrics' Recommendations Of Daily Television Viewing, Patricia Marley Howell

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The prevention of childhood obesity during the formative years is necessary because dietary patterns influenced by parents are developed early. A major obstacle to healthy feeding patterns in children is television advertising. The study tested three hypotheses. 1) Preschool children ages two to five years who watch more television are able to recognize/recall more food brands than those who view less television. 2) An increase in food brand recognition/recall in preschool children is associated with an overweight classification based on calculated Body Mass Index. 3) Children of parents who are unaware of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendations for …

A History And Definition Of Green Roof Technology With Recommendations For Future Research, John D. Magill, Karen Midden, John Groninger, Matthew Therrell

Research Papers

Green roof technology has a history that predates the modern era. Many functions of green roofs utilized during human history are analogous to contemporary functions. The justification of the use of green roof technology based on a review of literature shows the multiple and documented benefits that these systems can impart to the urban environment. A case study of the installation of the Southern Illinois University Carbondale green roof, showed the actual process of constructing the system. The maintenance and observation of this system gives firsthand experience. Interviews with green roof professionals allow greater understanding of current research needs. Finally, …

Transnational Surrogacy And International Human Rights Law, Barbara Stark Jan 2011

Transnational Surrogacy And International Human Rights Law, Barbara Stark

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Transnational surrogacy is becoming increasingly commercial, drawing on a wide range of domestic laws, including some notably lax domestic laws, and dramatically disparate economic circumstances, to create new families. Part I of this Article introduces the subject and explains why the domestic family laws of the participating states are inadequate to address it. Part II explains how international human rights law, especially three major human rights treaties: the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (“ICESCR” or the “Economic Covenant”), the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (“CEDAW” or the “Women’s Convention”) and the …
