The Next Generation Of Greenwash: Diminishing Consumer Confusion Through A National Eco-Labeling Program , Jessica E. Fliegelman

Fordham Urban Law Journal

Since the 1990's there has been a continuously growing movement among advertisers to appeal to consumers by touting how environmentally friendly their products are. This note addresses the prominence of misleading and deceptive environmental claims that have prompted appeals for improved federal regulation. Specifically, the Note focuses on the emerging trend of carbon advertising and national and international models that provide guidance on preventing deception. Part I conveys the current status of environmental advertising and the necessary background principles for establishing regulations. Part II details major criticisms of the current environmental advertising guidelines and proposed models for restructuring environmental advertising …

The Ross Sea polynya is among the most productive regions in the Southern Ocean and may constitute a significant oceanic CO2sink. Based on results from several field studies, this region has been considered seasonally iron limited, whereby a "winter reserve" of dissolved iron (dFe) is progressively depleted during the growing season to low concentrations (~ 0.1 nM) that limit phytoplankton growth in the austral summer (December-February). Here we report new iron data for the Ross Sea polynya during austral summer 2005-2006 (27 December-22 January) and the following austral spring 2006 (16 November-3 December). The summer 2005-2006 data show …

Epigenetics As An Explanation For Phenotypic Variation In Monozygotic Twins, Marina Pomerantseva Jan 2011

Epigenetics As An Explanation For Phenotypic Variation In Monozygotic Twins, Marina Pomerantseva

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The following is the introduction of this article: Researchers often use twins as natural samples to test hypotheses regarding the contribution of genetic factors to different phenotypes, especially diseases. The classical method is comparing traits in identical, or monozygotic (MZ) twins to those of dizygotic (DZ) twins. This method has had a significant impact on our current understanding of etiologic factors in many diseases which do not follow simple Mendelian law (i.e. complex diseases), including schizophrenia, bipolar disease, and major depression.

Is The Gallbladder Really Unnecessary? An Evaluation Of Gallstone Treatment, Danielle Weinberg Jan 2011

Is The Gallbladder Really Unnecessary? An Evaluation Of Gallstone Treatment, Danielle Weinberg

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The following is the introduction of this article: The red numbers on your alarm read two o’clock AM, but you’re wide awake. A dull ache below your ribs has tossed you from the blissful ignorance of sleep into the painful reality of another nocturnal attack. As the pale streaks of daylight appear, you grit your teeth in agony while the ambulance goes over yet another bump in its rush to get you to the emergency room. A blur of white coats, lab tests, and CT scans, and then you’re staring into the bright lights above the operating table as the …

The Role Of Ghrelin And Leptin In Obesity: Is Exogenous Administration Of These Hormones A Possible Drug Therapy?, Peri Eckstein Jan 2011

The Role Of Ghrelin And Leptin In Obesity: Is Exogenous Administration Of These Hormones A Possible Drug Therapy?, Peri Eckstein

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Ghrelin and leptin are two hormones that have been recognized to have a major influence on energy balance. Leptin is a mediator of long term regulation of energy balance, suppressing food intake and thereby inducing weight loss. Ghrelin, on the other hand, is a fast acting hormone, playing a role in meal initiation. As a growing number of people suffer from obesity, understanding the mechanisms by which various hormones and neurotransmitters influence energy balance has been a subject of intense research. This paper provides background on leptin and ghrelin hormones, their role in food intake and body weight in humans, …

Effects Of Calcium Supplementation On Cardiovascular Disease In Postmenopausal Women, Raizel Robinson Jan 2011

Effects Of Calcium Supplementation On Cardiovascular Disease In Postmenopausal Women, Raizel Robinson

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The following is an excerpt from the introduction of the article: In the United States, 53% of the population use dietary supplements. Of the people using supplements, 43% use calcium and 37% use vitamin D. However, 63% of women older than 60 years of age reported using dietary supplements (Park et al., 2009). Calcium supplementation, without co-administered vitamin D, increases the risk of myocardial infarction and cardiovascularrelated diseases among postmenopausal women. On the contrary, calcium supplementation with accompanied vitamin D may not produce similar effects.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: An Overview, Mayer Eckstein

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The following is an excerpt of the introduction of this article: There are many well-known disorders associated with the digestion process, the most common of which is gastroesophageal reflux disease, more commonly known as GERD. There are six major factors that are the primary cause for GERD: impaired esophageal motility, defective mucosal defense, lower esophageal sphincter (LES) dysfunction, reflux of gastric contents, delayed gastric emptying, and hiatal hernia (DeVault and Castell 1999). Impaired esophageal motility occurs when the esophagus has trouble moving the food down and normal peristalsis does not occur. Defective mucosal defense can cause irritation to the esophagus, …

Did The Fda Properly Assess The Safety Of Olestra As A Food Additive?, Leah Lebel

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The following is an excerpt of the introduction to this article: Olestra, a fat-substitute comprised of sucrose that has been esterified with fatty acids (Blume 1995), has been the subject of much controversy ever since its creation. Olestra is not absorbed (Mattson and Nolen 1972) because it cannot be hydrolyzed by pancreatic lipases (Mattson and Volpenhein 1972) or taken up across the enterocyte microvillus membrane (Freston et al. 1997), and thus, cannot be utilized for energy. Olestra has physical and organoleptic properties similar to those of traditional triglycerides (Jandacek and Webb 1978) and is emulsified together with triglyceride (Freston et …

Legislative Control Of The Menhaden Fishery, Nicole M. Rovner, Matthew G. Curtis Jan 2011

Legislative Control Of The Menhaden Fishery, Nicole M. Rovner, Matthew G. Curtis

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

This year, six menhaden- related bills were introduced in the Virginia General Assembly. Delegate John Cosgrove (RChesapeake) introduced legislation in the House of Delegates that was identical to Senate Bill 765, a bill that proposed to shift oversight of the menhaden fishery to the VMRC. This article aims to highlight the unique stance taken by Virginia's legislature and explain why this management is better left to the commission responsible for managing every other fishery in the Commonwealth. While there may not be a conclusive link between reduction industry practices and a decline in water quality, Virginia's legislators should recognize the …

Using Handheld Touch Screen Enabled Devices And Persuasive Game Mechanics To Teach Quadratic Functions, Alejandro Montoya Jan 2011

Using Handheld Touch Screen Enabled Devices And Persuasive Game Mechanics To Teach Quadratic Functions, Alejandro Montoya

Technical Library

Research has shown that many students are not interested in learning mathematics; they find it difficult to understand, irrelevant to their daily lives, and uninteresting. This thesis explores elements of computer games that may satisfy children’s learning needs and ultimately motivate them to learn mathematical concepts.

According to a 2008 survey conducted by the Washington, D.C. based Pew Research Center, 97% of children between the ages of 12 and 17 in the United States play computer, Web, portable or console games. Based on these numbers we can conclude young students like video games. Over the past few years, a new …

Preserving Useful Info While Reducing Noise Of Physiological Signals By Using Wavelet Analysis, Jeffrey Lam Jan 2011

Preserving Useful Info While Reducing Noise Of Physiological Signals By Using Wavelet Analysis, Jeffrey Lam

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Wavelet analysis is a powerful mathematical tool commonly used in signal processing applications, such as image analysis, image compression, image edge detection, and communications systems. Unlike traditional Fourier analysis, wavelet analysis allows for multiple resolutions in the time and frequency domains; it can preserve time information while decomposing a signal spectrum over a range of frequencies. Wavelet analysis is also more suitable for detecting numerous transitory characteristics, such as drift, trends, abrupt changes, and beginnings and ends of events. These characteristics are often the most important and critical part of some non-stationary signals, such as physiological signals. The thesis focuses …

Children's And Parents' Depression In Relation To Family-Based Behavioral Weight Loss Treatment Outcome, Rachel Kolko Jan 2011

Children's And Parents' Depression In Relation To Family-Based Behavioral Weight Loss Treatment Outcome, Rachel Kolko

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Baseline parent-report of child depression and parent self-reported depression have been found to predict childrenΓÇÖs outcome in family-based behavioral weight loss treatment: FBT), although less is known about how child self-reported depression, changes in depression over time, and depression assessed via multiple informants is associated with FBT outcome. Two hundred and forty-one overweight children and their parents entered FBT, and 178 completed the pre- and post-FBT assessments. Depression was assessed via child and parent self-report, and parent-report on child. Linear regression examined child and parent depression: both baseline and change from baseline to post-FBT) as predictors of child FBT outcome: …

Holistically Informed: A Scientist-Practitioner Offers The Perspective Of Inclusion Over Exclusion In Two Undergraduate Psychology Courses, Katherine A. Barone Jan 2011

Holistically Informed: A Scientist-Practitioner Offers The Perspective Of Inclusion Over Exclusion In Two Undergraduate Psychology Courses, Katherine A. Barone

Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice

An overview of some scientist-practitioner dilemmas that still exist in psychology sets the stage for an examination of how both models might be incorporated in the undergraduate psychology curriculum. The difficulty of guiding the applied psychology student towards respect for inclusion is explored and suggestions are offered for the curriculum in two courses, Theories of Personality and Cognitive Psychology. Specifically, multicultural emphases and work on case material seem to be the most helpful adjunctive curriculum and these are demonstrated through some aspects of a holistically informed practitioner focus. Using case material from diverse cultures, represented in a snowflake image, helps …

Mhc Class I-Dependent Acquisition And Maintenance Of Natural Killer Cell Function, Julie Chase Jan 2011

Mhc Class I-Dependent Acquisition And Maintenance Of Natural Killer Cell Function, Julie Chase

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Natural killer: NK) cells are hematopoietically derived immune cells of the lymphoid lineage. Their effector functions, including cytokine secretion and cytotoxicity, are controlled by the integration of signals received from both activating and inhibitory receptors. In a phenomenon known as "missing-self" recognition, NK cells eliminate self-tissues with aberrantly low or absent MHC class I surface expression, as is common in settings of viral infection and transformation, when these cells fail to engage the critical NK cell inhibitory receptors. Interestingly, NK cells that develop in an MHC class I-deficient environment are defective in natural killing and hyporesponsive to stimulation through their …

Managing White-Tailed Deer: Midwest North America, Kurt Vercauteren, Scott E. Hygnstrom Jan 2011

Managing White-Tailed Deer: Midwest North America, Kurt Vercauteren, Scott E. Hygnstrom

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

It easily can be said that the white-tailed deer is the most important species of wildlife in the midwestern United States. Approximately 10 million white-tailed deer inhabit the Midwest, which is more than any other region in North America. Further, many of the most impressive whitetails have come from the Midwest (Figure 17.1). Dramatic changes have occurred on the landscape since European settlement that influenced populations of white-tailed deer in this region. Timber harvest in the north and east and agricultural tillage and residential development throughout the region have had both positive and negative impacts on deer numbers. White-tailed deer …

Biological Erosion Of Marine Habitats And Structures By Burrowing Crustaceans, Timothy Mathias Davidson Jan 2011

Biological Erosion Of Marine Habitats And Structures By Burrowing Crustaceans, Timothy Mathias Davidson

Dissertations and Theses

Marine bioeroders, borers, and burrowers can have drastic effects to marine habitats and facilities. By physically altering the structure of marine habitats, these organisms may elicit ecosystem-level effects that cascade through the community. While borer damage is typically restricted to a few substratum types, burrowing isopods in the genus Sphaeroma attack a diversity of substrata in tropical and temperate systems. My dissertation examined how boring sphaeromatid isopods affect coastal habitats (saltmarshes, mangroves) and other estuarine substrata as well as marine structures. I used a combination of lab and mensurative field experiments to quantify the effects of boring by isopods and …

Chronology And Ecology Of Late Pleistocene Megafauna In The Northern Willamette Valley, Oregon, Daniel Mcgowan Gilmour Jan 2011

Chronology And Ecology Of Late Pleistocene Megafauna In The Northern Willamette Valley, Oregon, Daniel Mcgowan Gilmour

Dissertations and Theses

This study is an investigation of the timing of extinction of late Pleistocene, large bodied mammalian herbivores (megafauna) and of the environment in which they lived. The demise of the megafauna near the end of the Pleistocene remains unexplained. Owing to potential human involvement in the extinctions, archaeologists have been particularly concerned to understand the causes for faunal losses. Our current lack of understanding of the timing and the causes of the extinctions in North America may result from a deficiency in understanding the histories of each individual species of extinct animal on a local level. Detailed regional chronologies of …

Improving Hypothesis Testing Skills: Evaluating A General Purpose Classroom Exercise With Biology Students In Grade 9., Michael Gregg Wilder Jan 2011

Improving Hypothesis Testing Skills: Evaluating A General Purpose Classroom Exercise With Biology Students In Grade 9., Michael Gregg Wilder

Dissertations and Theses

There is an increased emphasis on inquiry in national and Oregon state high school science standards. As hypothesis testing is a key component of these new standards, instructors need effective strategies to improve students' hypothesis testing skills. Recent research suggests that classroom exercises may prove useful. A general purpose classroom activity called the thought experiment is proposed. The effectiveness of 7 hours of instruction using this exercise was measured in an introductory biology course, using a quasi-experimental contrast group design. An instrument for measuring hypothesis testing skill is also proposed. Treatment (n=18) and control (n=10) sections drawn from preexisting high …

The Technological Role Of Bone And Antler Artifacts On The Lower Columbia: A Comparison Of Two Contact Period Sites, Kristen Ann Fuld Jan 2011

The Technological Role Of Bone And Antler Artifacts On The Lower Columbia: A Comparison Of Two Contact Period Sites, Kristen Ann Fuld

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis explore the technological role of bone and antler artifacts from two contact period southern Northwest coast archaeological sites, the Cathlapotle site (45CL1) and the Meier site (35CO5). Technological measures of sedentism are based on lithics, and predict residential sedentism promotes technological expediency in hunter-gatherers (Parry and Kelley 1987). Cathlapotle and Meier lithic assemblages consist of expedient and opportunistic assemblages and raw material stockpiles, with the exception of highly curated projectile points and endscrapers (Hamilton 1994). The expectation that residential sedentism promotes technological expediency in hunter-gatherers was tested on the Cathlapotle and Meier bone and antler artifact assemblages in …

Effects Of Daily Social Support On Tension-Reduction Drinking, Deborah L. Brannan Jan 2011

Effects Of Daily Social Support On Tension-Reduction Drinking, Deborah L. Brannan

Dissertations and Theses

Researchers have argued that in times of need having supportive, caring people available can make all the difference between achieving optimum health and well-being or suffering from mental or physical illness (Cobb, 1976; Sarason & Sarason, 1985; Thoits, 1986). The direct-effect model of support postulates that having the knowledge of available relationship resources (i.e., perceived support) and receiving benefits from those relationships (i.e., received support) both have beneficial effects on health behaviors and well-being (Cohen & Wills, 1985). According to the stress-buffering model, when stressors are encountered, the certainty of having available resources, as well as having tangible support resources, …

Health Care Migration In Japan: Immigration Policy In Terms Of Language, Ayumi Susai Jan 2011

This chapter demonstrates the nation's passive attitude toward accepting foreign workers …

Countering Structural Violence: Cultivating An Experience Of Positive Peace, Carrie E. Stiles Jan 2011

Countering Structural Violence: Cultivating An Experience Of Positive Peace, Carrie E. Stiles

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis considers some conflicts involving indigenous peoples that arise from the universal standardization of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) over Plant Genetic Resources (PGR). My study presents the research problem of how to include indigenous peoples in dialogue as a prerequisite for conflict transformation. To better understand this problem, and potential solutions, I conducted participatory action research (PAR) through an ethnographic case study of Himalayan farmers working with the grassroots network Navdanya. The study explores the research question: how do Garhwali farmers experience grassroots mobilization for biodiversity and indigenous knowledge (IK) conservation? This question is intended to generate data for …

Microbial Ecology Of Active Marine Hydrothermal Vent Deposits: The Influence Of Geologic Setting On Microbial Communities, Gilberto Eugene Flores Jan 2011

Microbial Ecology Of Active Marine Hydrothermal Vent Deposits: The Influence Of Geologic Setting On Microbial Communities, Gilberto Eugene Flores

Dissertations and Theses

The discovery of deep-sea hydrothermal vents in 1977 revealed an ecosystem supported by chemosynthesis with a rich diversity of invertebrates, Archaea and Bacteria. While the invertebrate vent communities are largely composed of endemic species and exist in different biogeographical provinces, the possible factors influencing the distribution patterns of free-living Archaea and Bacteria are still being explored. In particular, how differences in the geologic setting of vent fields influence microbial communities and populations associated with active vent deposits remains largely unknown. The overall goal of the studies presented in this dissertation was to examine the links between the geologic setting of …

Youth Voices Of Bounty And Opportunity: High School Students' Experiences With Food And Community, Kara Marie Gilbert Jan 2011

Youth Voices Of Bounty And Opportunity: High School Students' Experiences With Food And Community, Kara Marie Gilbert

Dissertations and Theses

Currently, garden-based research does not include input from young adults about their experiences and perspectives as individuals in garden-based programs, specifically those that address issues of food and community. To address this void, this qualitative research examines youth perspectives and engagement in garden-based community projects in Olympia, Washington, and Medford, Oregon. The sample of 11 students was chosen from these projects that use food as a means to engage the community and educate underprivileged young adults about local food systems. The main question that the research addresses is: Why, and in what ways, are young adults appropriate agents for community …
