Factors Associated With Fruit And Vegetable Consumption Among Caribbean Immigrants In The United States, Claudia Martin-Ayoade

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Background: There are limited data available on the fruit and vegetable consumption of Caribbean immigrants in the United States.

Purpose: To assess changes in intakes of fruits and vegetables in Caribbean immigrants while assessing knowledge of the recommended servings and barriers to intake.

Method: A cross sectional Internet questionnaire was conducted for Caribbean-born members of the social network website Cariblifecentral.com. Data were analyzed using descriptive frequencies, Pearson’s chi-square, and the Student’s t-test.

Results: Of 113 respondents, 37 reported consuming less vegetables since emigrating (p<0.10) while 29 reported eating more. However, 10.8% of respondents did not know the recommended servings for vegetables. Access to fresh produce was no barrier to consumption.

Conclusions: As this population continues to grow, it becomes necessary to tailor nutrition and disease prevention …

Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (Libs): An Innovative Tool For Studying Bacteria, Qassem I. Mohaidat Jan 2011

Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (Libs): An Innovative Tool For Studying Bacteria, Qassem I. Mohaidat

Wayne State University Dissertations

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has gained a reputation as a flexible and convenient technique for rapidly determining the elemental composition of samples with minimal or no sample preparation. In this dissertation, I will describe the benefits of using LIBS for the rapid discrimination and identification of bacteria (both pathogenic and non-pathogenic) based on the relative concentration of trace inorganic elements such as Mg, P, Ca, and Na. The speed, portability, and robustness of the technique suggest that LIBS may be applicable as a rapid point-of-care medical diagnostic technology.

LIBS spectra of multiple genera of bacteria such as Escherichia, Streptococcus, Mycobacterium, …

Derivatives: A Twenty-First Century Understanding, Timothy E. Lynch Jan 2011

Derivatives: A Twenty-First Century Understanding, Timothy E. Lynch

Loyola University Chicago Law Journal

Derivatives are commonly defined as some variation of the following: financial instruments whose value is derived from the performance of a secondary source such as an underlying bond, commodity, or index. This definition is both over-inclusive and under-inclusive. Thus, not surprisingly, even many policy makers, regulators, and legal analysts misunderstand them. It is important for interested parties such as policy makers to understand derivatives because the types and uses of derivatives have exploded in the last few decades and because these financial instruments can provide both social benefits and cause social harms. This Article presents a framework for understanding modern …

End Of Life Care During The Last Days And Hours, Registered Nurses' Association Of Ontario

General Submissions: Community and Population-based Materials

The purpose of this best practice guideline is to provide evidence-based recommendations for Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses on best nursing practices for end-of-life care during the last days and hours of life. The guideline does not replace consultation with palliative care specialists, who can support nurses to provide quality end-of-life care. The guideline is intended to be a resource to nurses who may not be experts in this practice area. It is acknowledged that individual competencies vary between nurses and across categories of nursing professionals. The inclusion of recommendations on clinical, education, organization and policy topics makes this …

Pharmacy Faculty/Staff Publications

Objective: To evaluate glycemic control for critically ill, hyperglycemic trauma patients with renal failure who received concurrent intensive insulin therapy and continuous enteral (EN) or parenteral nutrition (PN).

Methods: Adult trauma patients with renal failure, who were given EN or PN concurrently with continuous graduated intravenous regular human insulin (RHI) infusion for at least 3 days were evaluated. Our conventional RHI algorithm was modified for those with renal failure by allowing greater changes in blood glucose concentrations (BG) before the infusion rate was escalated. BG was determined every 1-2 hours while receiving the insulin infusion. BG control was evaluated on …

The Highest Good And The Best Activity: Aristotle On The Well-Lived Life, Philip William Bauchan Jan 2011

The Highest Good And The Best Activity: Aristotle On The Well-Lived Life, Philip William Bauchan

Master's Theses

The question of how Aristotle characterizes eudaimonia, or living-well, in the Nicomachean Ethics has long been a contentious issue amongst Aristotelian scholars. The secondary literature has been roughly divided between inclusivist readers, who argue that Aristotle designates both theoria, or contemplation, and the practical virtues, and exclusivist readers, who argue that Aristotle singles out theoria alone. This thesis seeks to forge a middle ground between these two perspectives by focusing on the central claim of Book I that the eudaimonia is virtuous activity. Reading Book X in light of Book I's claim then allows one to show that both the …

Do Green Lifestyle Consumers Appreciate Low Involvement Green Products?, Bela Florenthal, Priscilla Arling Jan 2011

Do Green Lifestyle Consumers Appreciate Low Involvement Green Products?, Bela Florenthal, Priscilla Arling

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

Green products have become popular and have been targeted toward consumers who lead green lifestyles. Still, some green products are assumed to be more appealing to this group than others, sometimes based on level of involvement. This study tests a low involvement green product in terms of being appealing to consumers with green lifestyles. A theoretical model was developed and tested using a structural equation model. Results indicate that consumers with green lifestyles do value green attributes of low involvement products, in terms of consumer’s attitudes and behavioral intentions. These results imply that companies with green low involvement products should …

Making Sense Of Meta-Analysis: A Critique Of "Effectiveness Of Long-Term Psychodynamic Psychotherapy", Julia H. Littell, Aron Shlonsky

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

Evidence-based practice depends in part on knowledge derived from relevant research. For any given topic, there are likely to be many, potentially relevant studies; a careful appraisal and synthesis of the results of these studies is needed to understand the state of the empirical evidence. Meta-analysis is widely used to combine results of quantitative studies; yet this method is unfamiliar to many people and, as a result, meta-analyses are often uncritically accepted. In this article, we argue that meta-analysis is only one component of a good research synthesis. We critique a recent meta-analysis on the effectiveness of long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy, …

Quality Characteristics Of Virgin Coconut Oil:Comparisons With Refined Coconut Oil, Fabian M. Dayrit, Ian Ken D. Dimzon, Melodina F. Valde, Jaclyn Elizabeth R. Santos, Mark Joseph Garrovillas, Blanca J. Villarino

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Virgin coconut oil (VCO) is a vegetable oil that is extracted from fresh coconut meat and is processed using only physical and other natural means. VCO was compared to refined, bleached, and deodorized coconut oil (RCO) using standard quality parameters, 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and headspace solid-phase micro - extraction/gas chromatography mass spectrometry (SPME/GCMS). VCO tends to have higher free fatty acids (FFAs), moisture, and volatile matter and lower peroxide value than RCO. However, the range of values overlap and no single standard parameter alone can be 31 used to differentiate VCO from RCO. Using 31P NMR, …
