The history of ascorbic acid (AA) and cancer has been marked with controversy. Clinical studies evaluating AA in cancer outcome continue to the present day. However, the wealth of data suggesting that AA may be highly beneficial in addressing cancer-associated inflammation, particularly progression to systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and multi organ failure (MOF), has been largely overlooked. Patients with advanced cancer are generally deficient in AA. Once these patients develop septic symptoms, a further decrease in ascorbic acid levels occurs. Given the known role of ascorbate in: a) maintaining endothelial and suppression of inflammatory markers; b) protection from sepsis …

A Study Of Restaurateurs' Attitudes And Practices In Relation To Obesity, Gary "Lee" Frantz Ph.D., Chanda Walter M.S., Rpht, Kendra K. Kattleman Ph.D., Rd, Ln

Great Lakes Hospitality & Tourism Educators Conference

The dramatic increase in the rate of obesity in the United States is raising new public health concerns. Each year, obesity-related problems cause at least 300,000 deaths and cost around 100 billion dollars. Take a walk down the street, go to a shopping center or sport event, or pick up a newspaper or magazine and the severity of the obesity problem in the United States is becoming a critical problem to solve. About 65% of the U.S. adult population is overweight (35%) or obese (30%), which has doubled in only two decades. Obesity-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart …

Patterns And Regulation Of Ribosomal Rna Transcription In Borrelia Burgdorferi, Julia Bugrysheva, Henry P. Godfrey, Ira Schwartz, Felipe C. Cabello Jan 2011

Patterns And Regulation Of Ribosomal Rna Transcription In Borrelia Burgdorferi, Julia Bugrysheva, Henry P. Godfrey, Ira Schwartz, Felipe C. Cabello

NYMC Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Borrelia burgdorferi contains one 16S and two tandem sets of 23S-5S ribosomal (r) RNA genes whose patterns of transcription and regulation are unknown but are likely to be critical for survival and persistence in its hosts. RESULTS: RT-PCR of B. burgdorferi N40 and B31 revealed three rRNA region transcripts: 16S rRNA-alanine transfer RNA (tRNA Ala); tRNA Ile; and both sets of 23S-5S rRNA. At 34 degrees C, there were no differences in growth rate or in accumulation of total protein, DNA and RNA in B31 cultured in Barbour-Stoenner-Kelly (BSK)-H whether rabbit serum was present or not. At 23 degrees …

Association Between Serum Uric Acid Levels And Diabetes Mellitus, Pavani Bandaru, Anoop Shankar Jan 2011

Association Between Serum Uric Acid Levels And Diabetes Mellitus, Pavani Bandaru, Anoop Shankar

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Serum uric acid has been shown to be associated with cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease in previous studies. However, few studies have examined the association between serum uric acid and diabetes mellitus and their findings are not consistent. Therefore, we examined the association between serum uric acid levels and diabetes mellitus in participants from the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (, 52.5% women). Serum uric acid levels were categorized into quartiles. Diabetes mellitus was defined as fasting glucose ≥126 mg/dL, nonfasting glucose ≥200 mg/dL, or use of oral hypoglycemic medication or insulin (). In multivariable logistic …

BACKGROUND: Associations between air pollution and a multitude of health effects are now well established. Given ubiquitous exposure to some level of air pollution, the attributable health burden can be high, particularly for susceptible populations. OBJECTIVES: An international multidisciplinary workshop was convened to discuss evidence of the effectiveness of actions to reduce health impacts of air pollution at both the community and individual level. The overall aim was to summarize current knowledge regarding air pollution exposure and health impacts leading to public health recommendations. DISCUSSION: During the workshop, experts reviewed the biological mechanisms of action of air pollution in the …

It's The Cheese: Collective Memory Of Hard Times During Deindustrialization, Kristen Lucas, Patrice M. Buzzanell Jan 2011

It's The Cheese: Collective Memory Of Hard Times During Deindustrialization, Kristen Lucas, Patrice M. Buzzanell

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

Unquestionably, food and the way we communicate about it are important markers of identity. Like other chapters in this volume that illuminate connections to cultural, social, and gendered identities, food also is inherently linked to social class. Dougherty, Dixon, and Chou (2009) explain that people from different social classes have distinct relationships with food. From the security and taken-for-grantedness of food in middle and upper classes to the insecurity of food in lower socioeconomic classes, people's relationships to food structure everyday practices and discourses. Particularly for working class people (because "food on the table" is not always a taken-for-granted assumption), …

Resilience And Leadership In Dangerous Contexts, Christopher Peterson, Michael J. Craw, Nansook Park, Michael S. Erwin

United States Army: Publications

Daniel B. Cnossen was born and raised in Topeka, growing up on a small farm. He spent his childhood reading, running, playing sports, and working on the farm. Cnossen enrolled in the United States Naval Academy in 1998. He had never before seen the ocean and did not know how to swim, but he asked his new friends at the academy to teach him; he would often skip lunch to spend time in the pool. Cnossen joined the Navy triathlon team to strengthen his swimming. By his senior year, he had been elected captain of the team, which he helped …

Eating Rate During A Fixed-Portion Meal Does Not Affect Postprandial Appetite And Gut Peptides Or Energy Intake During A Subsequent Meal, J. Phillip Karl, Andrew J. Young, Scott J. Montain Jan 2011

Eating Rate During A Fixed-Portion Meal Does Not Affect Postprandial Appetite And Gut Peptides Or Energy Intake During A Subsequent Meal, J. Phillip Karl, Andrew J. Young, Scott J. Montain

United States Army: Publications

Eating rate has recently been shown to influence energy intake and appetite during an ad libitummeal, and alter postprandial secretion of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and peptide-YY (PYY) following a fixed-portionmeal. Whether these effects influence satiety, as measured by energy intake at the subsequent meal, is unclear. We manipulated eating rate during a fixed-portion meal in order to examine how eating behavior and associated periprandial and postprandial responses of putative endocrine mediators of appetite would affect energy intake at the following meal in fifteen non-obese (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m²) and ten obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m²) healthy adult men and …
