Feeding Interventions For Growth And Development In Infants With Cleft Lip, Cleft Palate Or Cleft Lip And Palate., A Bessell, L Hooper, Wc Shaw, S Reilly, J Reid, A-M Glenny

School of Psychology

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and cleft palate are common birth defects, affecting about one baby of every 700 born. Feeding these babies is an immediate concern and there is evidence of delay in growth of children with a cleft as compared to those without clefting. In an effort to combat reduced weight for height, a variety of advice and devices are recommended to aid feeding of babies with clefts. OBJECTIVES: This review aims to assess the effects of these feeding interventions in babies with cleft lip and/or palate on growth, development and parental satisfaction. SEARCH STRATEGY: The following electronic databases were …

Neuroprotective Effects Of The Lipidic Extract From Integument Of Squid Dosidicus Gigas, Pai-An Hwang, Yi-Gung Tsai, Shu-Yun Gau, Yu-Lan Hung, Chi-Chung Fan

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The integument of the squid Dosidicus gigas is an industrial waste and trouble the industrial processing. In this study, we examined the lipid composition and neuroprotective effects of D. gigas integument lipidic extract (DGI) in SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells which have been exposed to H2O2. The results showed that phospholipids, triacylglycerol and cholesterol accounted for 70.90 ± 4.96 (mean ± S.D.), 20.70 ± 3.54 and 8.40 ± 0.28% of DGI, respectively. And the main fatty acids were docosahexaenoic acid (30.53% of total fatty acid), palmitic acid (20.36% of total fatty acid) and eicosapentaenoic acid (11.84% of total fatty acid). DGI at …

Engaging Chicago Residents In Climate Change Action: Results From Rapid Ethnographic Inquiry, Lynne M. Westphal, Jennifer L. Hirsch Feb 2011

Engaging Chicago Residents In Climate Change Action: Results From Rapid Ethnographic Inquiry, Lynne M. Westphal, Jennifer L. Hirsch

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Addressing climate change requires action at all levels of society, from neighborhood to international levels. Using Rapid Ethnography rooted in Asset Based Community Development theory, we investigated climate-friendly attitudes and behaviors in two Chicago neighborhoods in order to assist the City with implementation of its Climate Action Plan. Our research suggests a means to effectively engage urban residents at the household and neighborhood level: understand the issues of importance in each neighborhood, assess the ways these are related to climate change mitigation or adaptation actions, and engage residents from this perspective, meeting mutually compatible goals. This builds upon the concept …

Animal Welfare In Multipurpose Cattle Production Systems And Its Implications On Beef Quality, Saymore P. Ndou, Voster Muchenje, Michael Chimonyo Feb 2011

Animal Welfare In Multipurpose Cattle Production Systems And Its Implications On Beef Quality, Saymore P. Ndou, Voster Muchenje, Michael Chimonyo

Farm Animal Welfare Collection

Animal welfare and its influence on beef production are major considerations in many developed countries. In the developing world, where food insecurity and poverty are prevalent, the welfare of animals receives low priority due to factors such as traditional customs and beliefs, lack of knowledge in animal handling and sub standard handling facilities. This is worsened by the fact that cattle are used for several purposes, such as meat production, milk production, draught power and traditional ceremonies. Research on animal welfare and how it relates to animal production have been done in the developed world. The objective of this study …

Vitamin D Status In Pregnant Omanis A Disturbingly High Proportion Of Patients With Low Vitamin D Stores, Moza Al Kalbani, Omayma Elshafie, Mohammed Al-Mamari, Ali, Abdullah Al-Zakwani, Nicholas Woodhouse Feb 2011

Vitamin D Status In Pregnant Omanis A Disturbingly High Proportion Of Patients With Low Vitamin D Stores, Moza Al Kalbani, Omayma Elshafie, Mohammed Al-Mamari, Ali, Abdullah Al-Zakwani, Nicholas Woodhouse

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine the vitamin D status of pregnant Omanis by measurement of their circulating 25 hydroxy vitamin D levels. Methods: Blood samples were obtained from a cohort of 103 consecutive healthy pregnant Omanis at the Armed Forces Hospital, Muscat, on their first antenatal visit. The study took place in May, June and July 2010. Results: Vitamin D deficiency was present in 34 (33%) of patients (25OHD3 <25 nmol/L), ‘at risk’ levels were found in 67 (65%) patients (25OHD3 25–50 nmol/L); two patients (1.9%) had values between 50 and 75 nmol/L, and no patients in the optimal range >75 nmol/L. Conclusion: If confirmed, these findings indicate the need for vitamin D replacement during pregnancy and lactation. Although not evidence based we recommend at least 1000 …

The Fight Against Geography: Malaria And Economic Development In Italian Regions, Marco Percoco Feb 2011

The Fight Against Geography: Malaria And Economic Development In Italian Regions, Marco Percoco

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Geography has long been considered as a fundamental prerequisite for economic development and growth. In recent years, a growing number of papers have considered the role of physical geography as a determinant of regional growth and development by considering it as a source of “intrinsic advantage”. Malaria is considered to be strictly related to poverty and its geographically-related origin is now widely recognized, i.e. it is endemic only in certain areas of the globe whose environmental and climatic characteristics are ideal for the proliferation of mosquitoes which are the vector for the transmission of the disease. The World Health Organization …

Itaipú: Gender, Community, And Work In The Alto Paraná Borderlands, Brazil And Paraguay, 1954-1989., John Howard White Feb 2011

Itaipú: Gender, Community, And Work In The Alto Paraná Borderlands, Brazil And Paraguay, 1954-1989., John Howard White

History ETDs

In 1975 workers on massive earth-moving machines began excavations in the middle of the Paraná River for what later would become the site of the worlds largest hydroelectric dam, Itaipú Binacional. During the period 1974-1991, the dam was constructed as a joint venture between the military regimes of Brazil and Paraguay and thousands of workers and their families migrated to the borderlands in search of employment. My study uses the conceptual framework of gender and sexuality in order to produce a comparative social history of the Itaipú hydroelectric dam project and the worker communities that it created in the Alto …
